follow the dinner. Our guest speaker is Dr. Bob Drummond, Chairman Board of Governors for the Shriners Hospital for Children in Montreal. Don’t forget our annual Shrine Circus March 18 to 20 at the Stampede Corral. This is our first attempt in many years to run our own circus and to move it to a larger venue. Please support this event. It is hopefully a first and without doubt a far superior circus than those of the past few years. I would like to welcome the new members to our 2011 Divan. Noble Brian Shimmons is our new High Priest & Prophet, and Noble Bob Newman is our new Oriental Guide. Both will be excellent additions to our Divan. They are getting their feet wet working diligently on the circus committee. And welcome back to our returning Divan members. They are Noble Kent Galbraith our Chief Rabban, Noble Gordon Brewer our Assistant Rabban, Illustrious Sir Bill Miller our Treasurer and Noble Garth Border our Recorder. Hope to see you all at the Stated Business Meeting on April 6!! Yours in the Faith, John B Thorpe, Potentate 2011

RECORDER’S RAMBLINGS Nobles and Ladies, we look forward to our new Shrine year with Potentate John Thorpe and Lady Elsje, and we would like to remind you of some of the dates of importance for 2011. Our ceremonial for this year is scheduled for late fall, October 21 & 22 at the Shrine Centre in Calgary. Potentate John wishes to utilize our refurbished Shrine Centre as much as possible this year. The Ceremonial date will now provide all of us plenty of time to approach our brethren in our lodges and promote our fraternity to them. We do need new members, so remember:

Ask a friend to be a mason! Ask a mason to be a Shriner!

“Circus Circus Circus” - March 18,19 20 at the Corral As many of you know, I served on the circus committee for many years and enjoyed it very much, and had a great time working with many dedicated circus committee members. We are going back to producing and organizing all aspects of the circus as we did in the past. Circus Chairman Garry Saunders and his committee are working very hard to make this first year back a success. Please do all you can to assist in this endeavor. You can order tickets from the Shrine Centre for your family and please get in touch with the committee to offer your help. Another important weekend this summer will be the PNSA in Butte, Montana. They are celebrating their 100th anniversary this year and I know that they will be putting on a great weekend for all who attend. Many of the Nobles will remember the last time the PNSA was in Butte and we were certainly welcomed into the community and the parade was probably one of the best we have ever participated in. I believe they declared a holiday in Butte so everyone could see the parade! I would recommend that all units and clubs consider attending this event. We will have details

and a registration form located in this issue. Nobles, before we know it, the parade season will be upon us. We encourage all units and clubs to attend as many as possible as these parades afford us the best opportunity to get ourselves better known to the southern Alberta communities. Noble Leigh McNeill, our Marshal, coordinates all the information from the various communities and if you have any questions about the parade schedules, he would be happy to assist you. A copy of the new parade schedule is available for download on our webpage Finally, as some of us are reaching a more mature age, remember what Mark Twain said: “ Age is an issue of mind over matter, if you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter ” Garth Border Recorder

FIRST LADY’S PAGE It is my pleasure to serve as First Lady of Al Azhar for 2011. Both John and I are pleased to represent our Centre in his capacity of Potentate, and it is my wish to make the Ladies of our Nobles feel welcome and a part of the activities throughout the year. Because the Ladies have such an active role in the Shrine as a result of their Nobles participation, I want to keep them abreast of my plans for the coming year. First let me thank all of you who attended our Potentate’s Ball at the Carriage House on January 22, 2011. It was an honor to see so many of you support John and to celebrate his birthday. I trust that everyone had a wonderful time helping us make such a great memory. All you ladies looked so beautiful in your evening gowns, making it a very classy affair. Nothing shows off our Shriners better than a lovely lady on his arm. Initiated by my good friend Carol MacKinnon, I am pleased to announce that I have established a fundraiser – beautiful Swarovski crystal key chains and cell phone strands. So that our Shriners Hospital for Children in Montreal may soar to even greater heights in their mission of mercy, the profit from the sale of each item will be contributed to the support of our Canadian Hospital. Many of you saw them at the Potentates Ball and I thank those of you who made purchases. For only $20.00 you can have one of these beautiful colored Swarovski crystal key chains or Swarovski clear crystal cell strands. And remember, they also make great gifts. Be creative and use the crystal cell phone strands as zipper pulls, camera strands or add a bling accessory to your evening bag – to give you a few ideas. These items are available at the Shrine Centre office or through your Divan representative attending the various Shrine Club and Unit meetings. I will also make them available for those of you who would like to sell them to your friends at work, at your organizations or anywhere throughout the community. Please contact me directly to make these arrangements. Wednesday April 6th: You don’t want to miss this after dinner ladies program. While your Shriners are conducting their business meeting, we will have a visit from Oberon the Owl and his handler. A presentation will be made by Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Center at 7:30 immediately after the April 6 dinner meeting. If you plan on coming please advise me by April 1. My e-mail address is [email protected] Lady Elsje Thorpe

GREETINGS FROM THE CHAPLAIN Lady Doreen and I moved to Red Deer 10 years ago next month. We only came for 5 years and then planned to sell everything, getting a motor home and traveling but the best-laid plans often go by the wayside. We all think that this winter has been snowy but that winter was just as bad and super cold. We had rented a truck on the Sunday and my son and son-in-law helped us take a load up to our new home. When I returned the truck that evening the company told me it would not be in use the next day and would I like it at a discounted rate? Being thriftier than Ill. Sir Charles Duffin I took them up on the offer. As I was alone and everyone was working, I decided to move the dirty garden tools and things that were easy for me to handle. I put on my dirty blue jeans over my winter long johns, a dirty old red ski jacket, what I call my plaid ‘Red Green’ hat with built in ear muffs and an old pair of mismatched winter gloves. I loaded up and drove the truck from Airdrie to Red Deer. As the time was around noon, I decided to stop at a neighborhood pizza joint that sells it by the slice. I was frozen, as the truck’s heater was not the best. I fumbled around in my pocket to get some coins to pay but my jeans were super tight from the long johns and my hands were numb. It took me a few minutes to get the coins out and pay the clerk. I am sure I looked like a homeless person dressed the way I was! The clerk said ‘Just a moment’ and took the Styrofoam container back into the kitchen as I was getting my money out. I paid and left. When I got over to our new home I went inside to eat and there were not the two pieces I paid for but 5 assorted pieces! I am sure they felt sorry for me being a homeless person and went the extra mile for me! The morals of the story are that not everyone that looks homeless ‘is’ and secondly, by doing something special for someone and not expecting anything in return will make both parties have a great day. The High River Hospital recently purchased a Pediatric Positioning chair that can be used to safely immobilize infants to toddlers for various x-rays. X-ray technicians Lisa Ryder and Tiana Oldfield explain how the chair works to foothills Shriners (L to R) Don Strate, vice-president, Leigh McNeill, past president, and Don Wellwood, President. The Foothills Shrine Club of High River helped purchase this new piece of hospital equipment, which will enhance patient care for children.

Presentation made to the High River Hospital by the Foothills Shrine Club

The Foothills Shrine club recently purchased a Pediatric Positioning Chair for the High River Hospital which will be used to safely immobilize infants for various X-rays. The chair will be used to safely enable children up to the age of 4 to undergo spine, chest, abdominal and soft tissue neck X-rays without exposing others to X-ray energy. Don Wellwood, President An Article printed in the High River Times on February 8th (by Angela Hill, Times Editor) Stated: “The Pedia-Poser is now being used at the High River Hospital. It will enable infants to children age four to undergo c/spine, chest, abdominal and soft-tissue neck X-rays. More importantly it will keep the patient safe and secure without exposing others to X-ray energy while creating the best possible images.”

TIN LIZZIE CORPS Well folks, March is here and once again the Nobles of the Al Azhar Tin Lizzie Corps are getting ready for a busy season. Our new cars (pictured below) are finally here! They were due in June last year, better late than never.

With the Circus moving this year, the Tins are going to put away our greasy BBQ and even greasier aprons, and instead sell novelties. It will be quite a change for us to be playing with toys… I mean selling them, once we have tested each and every one of them of course. Thank goodness we have our wives to keep us under control.

Once again, we will be hosting our annual meat sale. Delivery dates will be third Tuesday in April, July, and September. Please see our website for order forms: www.tinlizzies.ca. You won’t find better quality meat anywhere!

For our parade season this year, we have decided to do something our unit hasn’t done for a long time. Once a month, we will be having an old fashioned picnic after the parade for our members and their families (guests’ welcome of course). Aside from the regular parades, The Tins will be attending the Lethbridge Air show with the Air Corps, along with two other festivals here in Calgary. PNSA is on our to-do list as well.

We wish everyone the best spring possible, Faith, Hope, and Charity!

FEZ SEZ July 15, 2011

THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY A bus station is where a bus stops. A train station is where a train stops. On my desk, I have a work station… How much deeper would oceans be if sponges didn’t live there? If Fed Ex and UPS were to merge, would they call it Fed UP? By the way Nobles “Fez head Fred” is taking a walk through this issue of the newsletter. Let’s see how many of you are paying attention while reading this month’s Fez Sez. Let us know if you find him and what you would like to see more of in the future issues.

As I am writing this, it is two weeks to circus. We just thought that an explanation of some of the things we have done this year was in order. Firstly we wish to personally thank all the units and the volunteers for stepping up to the plate on this new circus venture. Next we want you to know we have made changes to how we are thanking the volunteers this year. In lieu of the traditional after circus party, we felt it would be more appropriate to give our thanks at the circus. So there will be food tickets provided for each show and these will be given out when you register, with your volunteer ID. This will enable you to get soup and a sandwich at any time you have a break from your position. One meal, per person, per show. The committee worked out free parking for our volunteers with Stampede Park, this does not happen usually with stampede, but we made this happen for you. There will be a shuttle service provided from the south parking lot at the old Kinsmen Centre (next to Erlton LRT). Unfortunately, due to limited parking this is a volunteer parking area only. Parking passes are at the centre or on the Shrine website; you need this to enter the parking area as Stampede staff will be manning the gate. Also as a last minute decision we are having 2011 circus patches made up and we will get them to all volunteers after the circus, as time constraints make it hard to get them here before or during. Well thanks again to all who are going to help us this first year and have fun, that’s what the circus is for. Garry Saunders Circus Chairman

Wild Rose Shrine Club

The Wild Rose Shrine Club began year 5 of being in existence with newly installed President Dick Buchanan reviewing the success we did enjoy in 2010: participation in several parades, three events with our Ladies as guests, guest speakers at our meetings, and an increased number of Nobles attending our monthly meeting. Outgoing as President Noble Bob Newman did telephone every Noble every meeting and the large turnout was the result. Thank you Noble Bob for your leadership and a great year 2010. Again we did our Santa Claus Picture Fundraiser at the Walmart. This was our third year of receiving wonderful support from the Walmart Airdrie store. Our profit was enhanced by a generous donation from the management and staff of the store. We appreciate our association with Walmart in our community. In addition this was only possible because ‘Our Santa’ Noble Ted Currie did greet and thrill the young and old alike. Thank you Noble Ted, thanks also to your many elves – both young and old. Our 2011 executive are busy planning events, social times and looking forward to the parade session. Noble Derek Eccles has brought an idea for a fundraiser to the Nobility. More on this in the coming months. We welcome our new members and their input is most appreciated.

Our Executive always united

Al Azhar Shriners Vintage Car Club Hello all. It’s time for my first The Fez Sez article of the year for the Vintage Car Club as the newly elected Chief Scribbler – er… I mean Secretary of the unit. Well, I am fortunate enough to have an interesting little read for you all out there which involves a very unique vehicle and a great man and his lovely lady. The Vintage Car Club Unit and its members are extremely proud to recently have their very own John Thorpe installed as the new Al Azhar Potentate for 2011 at the Potentate’s Ball and Annual General Meeting which took place at the Carriage House on Jan 22, 2011. First let me start by saying that for all those folks who were not able to attend the Potentate’s Ball, you missed a good one! Where else in the world would you have the opportunity to see a great man and his lovely lady make a grand entrance into the ballroom on……… get this ……… wait for it ……….. the world's very first automobile?!? Well, ok, not the original one, as that was made in 1886 by Karl Benz of Germany (one half of the Mercedes-Benz famed brand), but at the very least it was an immaculate and perfect re-creation of the original one. A beauty of a 3 wheeled gem that is regarded as the first gasoline powered car in the world – the Benz Motorwagen. It had a one cylinder gas powered engine that produced a whopping 0.9hp, one forward gear, and a max speed of 8 mph. It would have been a bit of a rough and noisy ride back in the day, being difficult to maneuver and stop at times, but Karl’s wife Bertha didn’t seem to mind as she took the Motorwagen on a trip with her 2 sons from Mannheim to Pforzheim Germany in 1888 on a 65 mile trip one way to see her mother – all without even telling her hubby Karl that she had taken his ride!

And not only did the grand entrance of our newly elected Illustrious Sir John and his lovely lady Elsje take place on an absolutely fantastic car, (which by the way had motoring power thanks to the help of some of our good friends of the Tin Lizzie Corps!) but the lovely couple also had an honor guard of some the best looking guys in the place….. ahem…. ☺ … who also happened to be members of the Vintage Car Club all decked out in our club jackets. Fitting entrance for a real car couple don’t you think? So after the grand entrance, the evening was kept on track by another of the VCC members, our President for 2011, Noble Bill Sheppard who did a great job as the Master of Ceremony for the evening – thanks Bill. A couple of other highlights from the evening included a special guest who arrived to sing the national American and Canadian anthems by a familiar voice to most in Calgary, especially those local hockey fans, that of Heather Liscano. And what I had not previously known about Illustrious Sir John was that this man has connections, and good ones, with the Flames organization as he has been a volunteer with them as a goal judge for 25 yrs or so. Thanks John, and try and turn the red light on in our end a little less often ok?? Another good bit from the night was that it was also John’s 73rd birthday that evening – good timing eh! Lady Elsje had organized a special surprise for all that evening with a colorfully wrapped box on each table which

Page 21: AL AZHAR SHRINERS NEWSLETTERclubrunner.blob.core.windows.net/00000100209/en-ca/files/...Summer: Butte, MT. Aug 24-27 ALGERIA CEREMONIAL Sept 9 -10, Malta JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE SHRINE GOLF

contained birthday cake. A special surprise birthday present for John came when a number of his grandchildren came up to the front of head table and sang a round of Happy Birthday for him. He was very moved and surprised by it all. Good planning job Elsje! So all in all, it was a great evening and thanks to everyone who helped plan and organize such a fun night. I would also like to thank all the members of the Vintage Car Club for helping out and as well to Eric Skagen who took some great pictures during the evening. A special thanks also goes out to Hans & Inga Pollhaus for arranging to organize the use of that special 3 wheeled Benz Motorwagen for this special occasion from a genuinely good guy and car & truck enthusiast extraordinaire Ron Carey. And for those who don’t know, most of the vehicles and memorabilia at Heritage Park Gasoline Alley have been donated by Ron which is just a portion of his overall truly fantastic collection – if you haven’t been yet, you need to check it out! And again, congratulations to our new Al Azhar Potentate for 2011 and his lovely Lady, John & Elsje Thorpe! The very best to you both during your coming year. Cheers, Noble Sean Gough Chief Scribbler - VCC

AIR CORPS Spring is fast approaching as I look out at the -20 Celsius weather. The upcoming months will be busy for all. The Air Corp has the usual parades to go to but this year we are also participating in 2 Air shows Airdrie July 16-17 and Lethbridge July 23-24, we can use as many helpers as possible to man the information trailer as well as the cars and planes. We are also participating in 3 street festivals 4st Lilac (May 29TH), Sun and Salsa (July17), and the Mardi Gras at Marda Loop (Aug 7th). The Air Shows draw anywhere between 30 to 50 thousand people. The street festivals between 80 to 100 thousand people. These events are an excellent way for the public to see what we do. I need help with these events to staff them and to talk to the people about what Shriners and Masons do in an effort to garner new members. If you would like help or if your unit would like to be a part of the event do not hesitate to call me for info or email me at [email protected] Fraternally Ron Down Captain
