Our Light

During the Holidays, as my Lady Tracy and I drove around our neighborhoods at night, we saw all the decorations and lights adorning our homes.

We are grateful for the time dedicated by our neighbors to build these displays where the multi-colored lights dispel the surrounding night and illuminate the decorations. It is always a beautiful sight, one that brings joy to our hearts and uplifts our souls.

We are equally grateful to our Nobility and Ladies, for bringing joy to our lives. How much we smile when sharing those fun events and the stories that come from them. The recollections of that one time on the patio at Osman…or that parade where we had so much fun…..the Hufli dinner…the Circus where we brought fun to families while working so hard…evenings learning how to “Zoom” together with Tom West.

Let us continue to build that string by creating new stories, in new ways. One upcoming opportunity will be the First ever Osman Sledding Party. What a jolly grand time our children, grandchildren, and families will have! Can you imagine me racing down a hill on a piece of plastic, while Illustrious

Sir Mike Nehm is waiting at the bottom to “catch” me? Apparently, Lady Tracy can, and I am sure there will be some stories to share after that! And thank Noble Neil and Lady Denise Clymer for the use of the hay bales.

Our Ceremonials are always great opportunities to bond together in that frank good fellowship while making new Nobles. It is always great to share time with our new Nobles and their families, building those future ties that will bind us together for years to come.

Family trips have always created some great stories, like Lady Tracy and my first trip to Oregon with her family. Oh yeah, that was my first attempt at learning how to play cribbage while eating five pounds of rock candy her brother bought at the store. Osman has its own family trips, The train ride to Chicago, the bus trip to Deadwood, the trip in Norway. Each of those trips have great stories. This year, as our original plans have been changed, we have three road trips being planned. Opportunities to get out and caravan with your fellow Shriners and their families. Our first trip will be in May, a trip down to Galena, Il. Although, I love to travel by motorcycle, the trip will be all sorts of vehicles, from campers, to sports cars, and yes motorcycles! Rumor is, we will even get to visit a world-famous biker bar and will of course have ice cream, it

is a road trip after all.

As Osman has its many clubs and units, reflecting different facets of this great diamond, we have various events showing that same diversity. A great opportunity to dress up and enjoy a great meal will be the second annual Black Tie Table Lodge. An evening of toasts, great food, and it has been known to have cigars on the deck; what do you expect from an evening hosted by bikers in tuxedos? Ice Cream at Nelson’s Creamery? Oh, that is for road trips….

As the opportunities to gather together begin to manifest from what seems to have been the void, let’s carry forth that light and let it shine as we celebrate that frank good fellowship.

When we share of ourselves, and our Osman, we build that string of lights we each carry to illuminate not just our lives but each other’s.

Grateful to be an Osman Shriner,Sean Gardiner

Screening clinics are usually a major patient recruitment tool. These are held in Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Nebraska. Only one screening clinic (in Minneapolis) was held in 2020 due to COVID-19, as compared to 17 screening clinics in 2019.

An increasing number of families are finding us via social media, such as Facebook. There are 3 employees in Twin Cities clinic work on patient recruitment. Marketing for patients has been expanded on a national level in 2020.

Reflecting on 2020 can only bring hope that 2021 is going to be a much better year. Shrine units were unable to participate in parades, Osman was unable to hold the annual Circus,

and many social activities that brought fellowship to our members and guests were discontinued. However, we were able to participate in our annual Bell Ringing activity for the Austin Salvation Army in December and collected $6,300.00 for them. Also, several Nobles rang bells for Fidelity Lodge #39 in November and December and they

collected over $11,000.00.

Our project of collecting pop cans allowed the Shrine Club to donate $5,500.00 to the Hospital Auxiliary. Checks were presented to Rose West in September and The Parade to Glory in December. We appreciate the support of the Austin community in this project. Our thanks to Noble Brad Stout who oversees this project, and makes sure the trailers are in working order by providing the necessary maintenance.

With vaccine’s now available we can anticipate resuming some of our activities, that would include parades for the Oriental Band. We look forward

to the annual Steak Fry in June, and our end-of-the parade season cookout usually held in September. We’ll keep you posted on dates, etc. The Oriental will be replacing the cover on the Oriental Band trailer prior to the 2021 parade season.

We have several candidates for the Lodge, and efforts will be made to give them opportunities for degree work when Lodges can resume meetings.

Hopefully some will be interested in becoming a member of Osman Shrine.

As you read this, our first meeting of 2021 of the Osman Shrine will have occurred. Moving into the new year will bring us the opportunity to look at new ways to help our children. Changes in leadership have brought new vision and hope for the year ahead of us, and we are up to the challenge.

We continue to plan ahead as restrictions are lifted and the path becomes clearer. The DaddyO’s are ready

to parade! Until that time, however, we will pursue other ways to help our kids. The health and welfare of those we serve is always in the forefront of everything we do. We continue to work diligently to find projects that we can collaborate on to continue to pursue our good works.

My grandfather was a Shriner, and he instilled in me that service to God and country was a desired and necessary part of a life well lived. As President of the

DaddyO’s, it is my mission to add value to the Osman Shrine by participating in creating opportunities to raise money for our kids and to bring smiles to them when they may be hurting. Every day we have a chance to do this, we are made better people and better citizens.

Greetings Nobles and Ladies,

As we close out 2020, the Director’s Staff would like to thank Illustrious Sir Larry Norte and Lady Audrey for their leadership under these unusual circumstances. And we welcome our new Potentate, Illustrious Sir Sean Gardiner and Lady Tracy with the hope, that 2021 will return to some normalcy.

We have learned a lot of things in 2020 that we never wanted to know. Like how a virus mutates and spread and how long you need to quarantine to prevent the spread of covid 19. And then there are a lot of positive things that I recall. Such as a text message or a phone call from a Shrine Brother asking how things are going or do you need anything. My answer was always that we need to get

together and have some conversation over some liquid refreshments.

We wish a safe recovery to anyone who was affected by the virus. By the time that this article is published, the covid should be on its way out. (Amen). That being said, we will be looking forward to upcoming parades, dinner meetings, our Osman Circus, and especially fellowship with our Shrine Brothers.

Our Director’s Staff officers for 2021 are as follows:

• President: Ill Sir Mike Nehm

• Vice President: Bill Stanley

• Secretary: Jim Malsom

• Treasurer: Kent Swedberg

• Chaplin: George Carlson

• Director: Dave Boguslawski

• Chief Camel Herder: Ill Sir Mike Nehm

Our snowbirds will be returning soon, and we wish them safe travels. No dinner meetings have been planned at this time. Stay tuned for more info on any future get togethers.

Congratulations to Eric Mundt for becoming Osman’s new Outer Guard. We hope you learn a lot of things with this new chapter in your life. You will make a great potentate if tradition prevails when your time comes.

Also, a huge thanks to Brian and Ronnie Rahm for providing the

equipment and labor to help with all the tree work at the spur.

We continue to meet on Wednesday nights. Not a lot of work gets completed but everyone enjoys the time spent.

We are working on having a business meeting sometime mid-March to mid-

April. We continue to discuss the day/time/place to accommodate return of the snowbirds and before parade season starts.

We give you 4 wheels but your only required 2 or 1.

Thanks,Calvin Barfknecht.

Welcome to 2021! 2020 is now one for the history books.

Let us hope we can return to some semblance of normal life.

It would be great to be able to get together with our fellow

Nobles, Ladies, and friends. Be it a meeting, a parade or just a cup of coffee. It will come. The Alexandria Shrine Club received a nice Thank You note from Rose West of the Auxiliary for our donation of $1000 to the wheelchair fund. It was presented at the Parade to Glory. As of this writing, no meetings are scheduled.

I will let everyone know when we can safely have one. Until then, be careful, be safe and God Bless!

The pandemic is still with us, so we have had to postpone the April 1-4, 2021 circus.

Our new circus dates are November 18-21, 2021.

After this year we will go back to our regular schedule in March of 2022.

The Mommy & Daddy program is going well. We are already getting requests from the community, so the Mommy & Daddy program is more important than ever. Remember, that regardless of the actual circus dates, the Mommy & Daddy cut-off is still the end of March so return your form now before it gets lost in the mail pile. Thanks!

This year we will have a completely new ticketing system, optimized for ordering on mobile devices. We anticipate that the new system will

not only improve the purchasing experience, but get families in the doors and to their seats more easily. The purchasing experience sets the expectations for the whole rest of the circus experience, so we want it to be good.

Overall, there are still more questions than firm answers as to what the 2021 circus will be like, but we are working on all the things that we can. Eventually, when there is more solid information, we will get to (at least) a virtual circus meeting, but for now, the best way to address concerns is by sending me an email.

I’m also asking that anyone planning to do Nobility Sales (plaques, advertising, tickets), contact me with your plans. I recognize there are many issues with getting out and selling this year, and I’m here to support you, but need to know what you need to have it ready for you on-time.

That’s about it for now.

Thanks, and someday soon, May All Your Days Be Circus Days!

Greetings Nobles and Ladies of Osman Shrine!

Congratulations to our newly installed Divan and our newest Potentate, Illustrious Sir Sean Gardiner, and First Lady Tracy. Lady Terri and I are extremely excited for 2021’s events and we look forward to serving Osman Shrine on the membership committee.

I will be unveiling a deeper look into the overall membership plan at our February Club’s and Units Seminar. For now, I will continue to share thoughts, plans, and

ideas for 2021.

Last month, I talked about how Osman’s focus in 2021 was to be on our Blue Lodges and in a way revamp our “lodge ambassador program”. We will do this by becoming “ambassadors” ourselves and taking the message of the Shrine with us on our “caravan” road trips to the lodges within “Osmanland”.

We can really accomplish things together working with our local shrine clubs, local lodge representatives, and Osman Shrine. By coordinating our efforts and conducting a road trip with stops along the way, we bring many Shriners and Masons together. Not to mention bringing families together. We can forge partnerships, find out what those lodges need, do joint fundraisers, BBQs, really anything imaginable that would lead to bettering the lodge, shrine, and community.

We need to be there to help these lodges so they can help us with membership. Also, it just might get Shriners to go to lodge that have not been to lodge in awhile or vice versa. It is all about making good men Masons and thusly making Shriners so we can do the work needed in our communities. Unity is Harmony.

We are also going to help with the events at Osman Shrine. For example, the upcoming sledding day event is a perfect opportunity to invite families that you know to come join in the fun! That family can already be Masonic but not a member of Osman or not even be a Mason. We all should be inviting friends we know for a fun day of adult and kid fun!

I feel by using every event we have and using the tools of advertising, social media, marketing, plus the added help of our network of Nobles and Blue Lodges, we will be successful in our membership efforts in 2021.

Dear Auxiliary Members and Friends of the Auxiliary,

The Osman Auxiliary wants to congratulate our newly elected Potentate, Sean Gardiner and his Lady Tracy. We wish you a great year, and we are looking forward to working with you throughout 2021.

I would like to extend a special thank you to the members of the Rochester Area Shrine Club for all the toys collected for the Osman Auxiliary to be distributed to the children at Shriners Children’s Twin Cities. Every year, Rochester Shrine Cub has a toy drive in conjunction with their Holiday party, and this year, even though, they had to cancel their Holiday party, their Shriners still donated many many toys. We really appreciate the wonderful toys you collected at your toy drive. There were toys for every age and both boys and girls. They were great! A very special thank you to Shawn Carrick from the DADDY-O’S and Paul M Peterson Captain of the Guard for delivering the toys to us. A couple of weeks later, Paul M. Peterson and Lady Patti also delivered toys that were collected by the Winona Shrine Club. We thank you all for collecting so many wonderful toys

and for delivering the toys.

Osman Auxiliary also wants to thank Dawn and LeRoy Swanson for their very generous personal donation in addition to the fund raiser Dawn did on Facebook. Dawn started a Facebook fund raiser for the Osman Auxiliary with the money to go to the WGA Wheelchair Fund. Dawn said that she was amazed at the generosity of the people responding to her fund raiser. Between the monies raised and Dawn and LeRoy’s donation, Dawn gave the Osman Auxiliary $3,625. Thank you for this amazing donation!!!

Osman Auxiliary normally has our Wine and Craft Beer Tasting and BUNCO in the spring; however, due to COVID, we have decided not to have these events this spring. Hopefully, we will be able to bring the Wine and Craft Beer Tasting event back in the spring of 2022, and we will have BUNCO this fall.

Our 2021 events will begin with the Annual Osman Shrine/Osman Auxiliary Golf Tournament which will be on September 12th. The Blood Drive on September 4th, a luncheon on October 23rd, BUNCO on November 11th and the Holiday Luncheon on December 4th. There will be more information to follow on these events. Please mark these dates on your calendar now.

Again, it is a pleasure and honor to serve as your Chairman, and thank you for all of your continued support to the Auxiliary. Your donations are making a difference in the lives of the children at Shriners Healthcare for Children – Twin Cities. We appreciate everything you do. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.
