This is the last meeting of the High School Curriculum and Instruction Committee for the 2020-2021 school year.

I. Committee Chairman Sherry Womack called the meeting to order.

II. Approval of 1/27/2021 Agenda -The 1/27/2021, agenda was approved.

Ill. Approval of 9/16/2020 Minutes-The 9/16/2020, minutes were approved.

IV. Instructional Update-Dr. Chris Dossenbach

High school registration for the 2021-2022 school year will begin in the next month or so. Final updates are being made to the LCS Course Guide and should be available to schools in the coming weeks.

ACT Boot Camps will start in a few weeks as we continue to prepare students for ACT testing. State-wide ACT testing for all juniors will take place on Februa ry 23. As with EOCs in the Fall, students are required to take the ACT in-person . The state will provide two make-up sessions for students unable to attend on February 23. We are required to test 95% of students so it is very important that we get students into the building for ACT testing.

V. Business of the Board

1. CTE Course Approval-Marketing Applications-MM52-Gary Hart

This is a 2nd level course in the Marketing Pathway and serves as a completer course for students. It conforms to our efforts to provide vertical alignment

between middle, high, and post-secondary and has a proof of learning indust ry aligned credential of Customer Service and Sales Certification

It was consensus of the committee to approve the new CTE marking applications course. Marketing Applications will be placed in the 2021 course guide to be offered the 2021-2022 school year. This item will be placed on the 2/9/2021, BOE agenda under Consent Agenda.

2. NAF Academy Update-Life Science Academy-Gary Hart

The application has been submitted to NAF for approval of our Life Science Academy to be hosted at each of the two high schools. Once approved we will begin a year of planning that will allow us fo take a deep dive into many areas that will be very important to the overall success of our academies.

Initially we will begin to form a committee comprised of education based staff at each school, post-secondary representatives, district leadership, the chamber of commerce and economic development and others to look at the academy from various perspectives and begin to formulate an academy structure that will provide the most options and opportunities for our students and local business and industry partnerships.

We will begin by looking at the overall Academy Development & Structure to make sure our program is properly embedded into the school offering opportunities for open enrollment and proper support and recruitment of st ude nt s to sustain our academies and establish them as a viable option for our students.

We will focus on several areas that will be critical to our success: Curriculum & Instruction as we will have the opportunity to design our own unique inst r uct ion drawing from st at e approved curriculum, NAF approved Curriculum, a third party curriculum as we do with Paxton Patterson and our Engineering academy, or we can suggest other options and submit for approval from NAF. In other words, we have the flexibility to chart a path that best meet our current and future needs

Advisory Board are very important to the academy process as we want to ensure we a diverse group of individual s that represent Lee County and our surrounding counties providing a voice of wisdom and guidance as we look to establish ourselves as the standard for health science education and path to continued education and careers .

Advisory boards provide an essential bridge between schools and the workplace.

• The US. Bureau of Labor Statistics states that 6 of the 10 fastest growing

occupations are related to healthcare • Forecasting a growth of 22.6% between 2019 and 2029, So this is before

COVID-19 • With intense growth projected in the Service Sector, Bio Medical and

Research and Development.

Work-Based Learning

Work-based learning is an inst ruct ional strategy that connects what students are learning in the classroom with the world of work. Paid internships are a staple of NAF Academies allo wing students to become NAF track cert ifi ed.

I am very excited about what lies ahead for our Life Science Academies and all the options and opportunities prospective students will have because of them.

dedication to help the students-high school totally remote and element ary and middle on the AB schedule.
