• “As we begin this semester I want to take a few minutes and discuss emergency preparedness. Purdue University is a very safe campus and there is a low probability that a serious incident will occur here at Purdue. Some Reminders• All TA/RA & faculty appointments should be processed through

the department first, not through the business office.• All faculty/instructors must post office hours (in course syllabi)

and be accessible to students.• Please be thoughtful about the role of our clerical staff:

– Faculty are responsible for advising students, clerical staff should not be put in that position

– Clerical staff should not address students problems that have to do with sensitive information (course grades, course assignments, etc.)

– Clerical staff are to assist with Concur…

Copying Experiment• COE Business Office, in an effort to save on staff time, made a

proposal that we stop charging annual and/or course accounts for copying…– EDCI will cover copying charges…

• Experiment:– For Fall 2014, faculty will not be charged (nor TAs for courses) for

copying…– No allocations for courses have been made (e.g., $1.50 allocation per

student…)– Exception: Funded projects with line-items for copying will be charged– Must still use code to make copies, but used only for tracking…– We will monitor for abuse and report on progress later in the semester.

• Grant Incentives– COE: $100-200 for grant submissions, and return of 10% of

salary savings to the investigator – University: 25% of the F&A recovery coming back to COE now

goes to the responsible investigators via incentive accounts



Internal Funding Opportunities• Launch the Future Seed Grants

– Initiatives focused on grand challenges of STEM education and social justice. Category I proposal, for projects up to $25,000, are due September 1. Category II pre-proposals, for projects up to $100,000, are due October 1. (Full proposal submissions will be invited.)

• EVPRP Non-Laboratory Research Infrastructure and Equipment– Fund research equipment and materials. Tier 1 applications ,

less than $5,000 (submit to college). Tier 2 applications, $5,000 to $20,000 (submit to EVPRP). The application deadline is 5 pm, Monday, September 22.

• Mentoring– The COE mentoring program is expanding this year.


Graduate Education• Department External Review

– In keeping with Graduate School policy that departments undergo graduate reviews every 5 years, EDST will engage in a self-study and external review this fall.

• New Graduate Policies– Graduate students are required to complete a sexual violence

awareness program by Sept. 30.– The Graduate School will be rolling out a new thesis deposit

form that will require the student and major professor to sign a statement attesting that the thesis has been checked in iThenticate and any plagiarism issues have been addressed.
