Unique titles that Jesus uses to direct the message of God’s salvation and life to all who hear it. How would you describe Jesus? What words would you use? How do you understand God and who God is? These and other questions will come up during our Lenten journey both Wednes- days and Sundays these next six weeks. Please feel free to invite your friends, family, and neighbors to our gatherings. The roofing proposals will need to be approved by the congregation. Again, once we have more information as to costs, we will be able to bring those proposals to you. We also used the meeting to approve lan- guage to guide the group who will be look- ing at different ways to better secure our financial future by looking at the various options for the Sullivan campus. I was pleased that we had three possibilities brought forward and who knows the team may even come up with a fourth. We look forward to hearing what they learn and the pros and cons of each options. We hope to report more in the coming months.

Our Lenten Journey

Ash Wednesday was on February 26th and

we began our Lenten journey for this year. Some of you came and bagged oatmeal packets and enjoyed a very simple meal of beans and rice with bread. Then came in for worship and had ashes put on your forehead to remember our mortality and to where our physical bodies will return, but then we receive Holy Communion to remember where it is we are going. LETTER FROM THE COUNCIL PRESIDENT

By Sharon Pegau The Council had a successful special meet-ing this month to go over all the requests we have received to repair, maintain or improve the facilities as well as come up with guidelines for the team that will be looking at alternatives for our financial future. Our first four focus areas on the facilities will be:

Resealing and restriping the parking lot

Replacing the swamp cooler in the kitchen

Replacing the rest of the roofing on the Broadway campus

Replacing the roofing on the Sullivan campus

Once we have more information on exactly what is being proposed on those repairs and the associated costs, the Council will be able to move forward on the parking lot and swamp cooler proposals. The roofing proposals will need to be approved by the congregation. Again, once we have more information as to costs, we will be able to bring those proposals to you. HAPPY HELPERS By Forrest Diehl

We began this year’s Lenten Journey in February and I hope yours is going well. I googled the word “Lent” to share some motivating Lenten thoughts with you – but got side-tracked. Do you know how many words begin with the letters l-e-n-t? The answer is scores… And no, I don’t play Scrabble. Here are some examples: lenticular, lentivirus, lentissimo, lentamente, lenticules, lentils, lenticelle, lenten-tide, etc. I looked up some of the definitions and if you are musically or medically inclined, you’d probably recognize some of the words. I learned that the liver spots on my hands are called lenticules, but I think I will continue to call them “liver spots” – lest of being accused of being vain, and adding to my list of things to pray about - during Lent. See, I told you I got side-tracked. During my Lenten Journey, I’m going to stay focused on the task-at-hand. And speak-ing of Lenten Journey, Marlene and I have begun ours, in the last five years, or so, in attending St. Mark’s Fat Tues-day Jazz Mass. I should have mentioned it in last month’s article, so I could have given you a heads-up. By the time you read this, it will have already taken place. It really is an uplifting event! Watch for it next year! Each year, Lent and the Easter season seem to “sneak-up” on me. Katy Brownlee shared with me a list of excuses for not going to church that was published in an Ann Landers’ article years ago, entitled The No-Excuse Sunday. I thought it was pretty humorous, and think you will too: (Note: some of the expressed thoughts and verbiage, indeed, indicate that the article is probably of the 1950 vintage)

Cots will be placed in the narthex for those who say “Sunday is my only day for sleeping in.”

Eye drops will be available for those whose eyes are tired from watching TV too late on Saturday night.

We will have steel helmets for those who believe the roof will cave in if they show up for church service.

Blankets will be furnished for those who complain that the church is too cold. Fans will be on-hand for those who say it is too hot.

We will have hearing aids for those who say, “The Pastor talks too softly.” Cotton balls will be available for those who say he is too loud.

Scorecards will be available for those who wish to count the hypocrites present.

Relatives will be in attendance for those who like to visit on Sunday.

TV dinners will be available for those who claim they can’t go to church and cook dinner too.

One section of the church will have some trees and grass for those who see God in nature, especially on the golf course. The sanctuary will be decorated with both Christmas poinsettias and Easter lilies for those who have never seen the church without them. Thanks Katy!

HAPPY HELPERS-Continued I must say that I was not disappointed in the Super Bowl this year. I thought it was a very exciting game. I have reached the conclusion that I am “just too old” to enjoy Super Bowl half-time entertainment venues, anymore. It has been years since I can actually claim that I have enjoyed the music and pageantry of the event. And, speaking of sports, we have the March Madness NCAA Basketball Tournament coming up. Go Zags! Don’t forget about the Iditarod Dog Sled Race in Alaska. The race will begin, ceremonially, on Saturday, March 7. It usually takes 9 – 14 days to complete the 1,049 miles, depending on the conditions. There are 58 mushers regis-tered to run the race this year, but I am sure some will scratch before the actual start on March 8 in Willow, AK. February’s Happy Helpers’ accomplishments include: filled soap dispenser in restrooms (George Harrison, Wes Todd); replaced broken light switch in kitchen dish-washing area (Jeremy Hostetler, Harry Benton, Wade Wipperling), rehung plexiglass display bulletin board in Child Center classroom (Bill Thurston, Dave Cook); set-up tables and chairs in gym for Water-color Painting class (George Harrison, Wes Todd, Kent Tibbetts, Dave Cook, Steve Emig, Harry Benton); affixed child-proof cover in electrical wall socket (Bill Thurston, Dave Cook); drained sediments from Sullivan Campus hot water heater (Ken Otteman); removed ceiling vent grate from kitchen ceiling to find source of water leak (Dave Cook, Harry Benton, Bill Thurston, Ken Otteman); coordinated with Banner Heating to get estimate on kitchen roof swamp-cooler replacement (Ken Otteman); ordered replacement door lock to Child Center laundry room (Ken Otteman); replaced Child Center laundry room door lock (Ken Otteman, Bill Thurston, Wes Todd, Dave Cook, Harry Benton); repaired hydraulic door closer to Child Center classroom (Ken Otteman, Bill Thurston); carried kitchen recyclables from kitchen to outside recycling bin (Wes Todd, George Harrison, Steve Emig); replaced light bulbs in the sacristy (Harry Benton, Kent Tibbets); repaired and tightened lock on kitchen freezer (Bill Thurston, Dave Cook); monitored work by Banner Heating after AVISTA declared that the roof furnace was leaking gas (Bonnie Calhoun, Heidi Perry); replaced light bulbs in gym hall-way in front of the kitchen serving line (Harry Benton); replaced fluorescent light bulbs in Child Center classroom (Bill Thurston); collect, sort, and transport recyclables to recycling center for Happy Helper revenue (Roger Scheurer); replaced furnace air-filters (Harry Benton); etc. The Happy Helpers are looking forward to the month of March with the return of daylight savings time on 8 March and the first day of spring on 19 March. Easter arrives on 12 April this year! The Happy Helpers meet each Thurs-day morning, 8:00 A.M., at the church. During February, Harry Benton provided the goodies. Thanks Harry! Visitors are welcome! If you can’t join us by 8:00 A.M., come anytime. Usually, we finish talking by 9:00 A.M. and finish working by 11:00 A.M.

PARISH NURSE By Debbie Martin,

7 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE

CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK The mysterious respiratory infection originating in Wuhan, China, has been classified as a coronavirus, more specifi-cally titled 2019-nCoV. Everything you need to know: 1. China had confirmed 18 deaths related to the outbreak, with over 600 sickened. The coronavirus has spread to the U.S., Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and Singapore, CBS News reports. 2. "The virus is mainly transmitted through the respiratory tract," Li Bin, deputy director of China's National Health Commission, said at a January 22 news conference. "It may mutate and there is risk of further spread." He said officials are trying to limit large events as the country prepares for the Lunar New Year, when about 400 million Chinese people are expected to travel nationally and globally. 3. The outbreak was initially linked to a seafood market in Wuhan, which was shut down for disinfection Jan. 1. Coronaviruses typically originate in bats but are known for spreading to people and other animals. There is mounting evidence that the virus is spread through human transmission, such as a potential "super- spreader" who infected 14 healthcare workers at a hospital in China, Wired reports. 4. The CDC confirmed the first U.S. case January 21 — a Washington man in his 30s hospitalized outside of Seattle for pneumonia symptoms. He had recently traveled to Wuhan, but did not visit the seafood market. The man lives alone, officials say, but had close contact with at least 16 people after returning from China January 15, according to The Seattle Times. 5. Travelers from Wuhan will be screened at five U.S. airports, while American hospitals are already altering processes to quickly identify infected patients, The New York Times reports. 6. Chinese authorities imposed a quarantine of Wuhan's 11 million residents January 23, according to tweet by People's Daily, China. North Korea closed its borders January 21 in efforts to keep the coronavirus out, The Washington Post reports. 7. WHO officials determined January 23 it was too early to declare a global public health emergency, citing the restrictive and binary nature of the virus.

Average monthly income came in $7,297 higher than average budgeted monthly income. Income is typically higher in January due to lump sum giving by a few members.

Average monthly expenses came in $291 higher than average budgeted monthly expenses. This was driven mainly by utility and snow plowing costs which are typi-cally higher in the winter months.

Expenses included the budgeted disbursement (10%) of benevolence dollars for the ELCA, Spokane Valley Partners, Maasai Health Systems, and Lutheran Com-munity Services.

Notes for Advent Lutheran Child Center In January, income exceeded expenses by $851.

Total income for January 2020 increased by $7,715 when compared to January 2019. The increase in in-come is driven by a 10% increase in private pay tuition rates.

Total expenses for January 2020 increased by $2,765 when compared to January of 2019. The increase in expenses is mainly driven by the raise in minimum wage from $12/hr. to $13.50/hr.

The Center has $37,630 in reserve which translates to .5 months of average expenses.
