The world of ancient Egypt fascinates us. It is the oldestcivilization to have left us enough of itself that we canimagine life—at least the lives of rulers—in that time andplace. Many of us have thought of making that journeywhen the time was right, so that we might see pyramidsand temples and experience the Nile delta that sustainsthe country now as it did thousands of years ago.

For my husband John and for me, the right time is now,and the right journey is with informed, curious, observantmembers of the public radio community. We will boarda delightful new river cruise ship in Luxor to sail the upperNile. On land, return each night to the pleasures of a 5-starhotel, where we will share thoughts on the day’s eventsand rest for the next. Along the way we will have timefor discussions about places visited, books read andmomentous events in our own time.

This trip comes at a special time for me, as I celebrate30 years of broadcast conversation on WAMU 88.5 withpolitical leaders, authors, experts in many diverse fieldsand public radio listeners. In 1979 I was invited to hostWAMU’s Kaleidoscope, which brought together studioguests and listeners. In 1984 Kaleidoscope became TheDiane Rehm Show, and in 1995 we began national—andinternational—distribution over the NPR satellite network.

In visiting Alexandria, on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast, I am returning to a city where my mother lived with herfamily before she came to the U.S. For all of us, with orwithout family ties, ancient Egypt represents the firstexotic and truly different civilization we learned about.Thrilling as it was to learn about hieroglyphics, mummiesand pyramids, it will be even more rewarding to travelup the Nile and encounter them firsthand.

If you can remain abroad for a few days longer, I hope youwill visit Israel for several days before we reach Egypt, inJordan for several days afterwards, or perhaps for both! Both extensions bring you face-to-face with the stunninglegacy of ancient times and allow you a richer perspectiveon the complex contemporary life of the region.

I hope you will join us on this grand adventurein Unforgettable Egypt.
