Budapest-based party crew ninjabreakz brings you Stanton Warriors one more time as part of their high Definition Break Series. mark Yardley and Dominic B are icons of nu school breakbeat having played at many crowded parties on the ship already. Underground funk djs Dancefloor Outlaws, however, may come as a bit of a sur-prise, but you can be sure that it will be a pleas-ant one.

Being the pioneer band of Scandinavian extreme metal, meshuggah kept their experimental flow since their formation in 1987. They made the college town of Umeå famous for good and have been an inspirational source for a whole generation of metal musicians. On this long-awaited April night they will show what they mean by saying that ”all paths leading to syncopated bliss are paved with arrhythmia.”

Who’s this Dutch lady with the seductive voice and crazy hairdo? Lilian hak is a conservatory girl who turned out to be obsessed with electronic effects and cinematic moods. Listening to her, we don’t only hear a talented singer but also drop in the middle of a vintage movie that won’t let us go ever again. hungarian electro-goth Volkova Sisters do the same but with even darker drone-like sounds and more claustrophobic vocals. You’ve never loved suffering this much!

Austrian russkaja are like an old friend to the hungarian audience. They are always welcome on the stages of venues and festival country-wide and they come back as many times as they can - this time, to present us EnErGiA, their all new album. Basically a ska band, russkaja dare to include any element to suprise you and make you dance. Stabilfrazír are their hungarian counterpart: as they say, they are not afraid to mix reggae and ska with anything that can spoil them.

Our weekly improvisational club series, random Trip celebrates their fourth birtday in April, while A38 is ten years old this year. This results in many special guests all month: first their birthday special on the 16th with the „dream line-up” chosen by fans, next week a show with Ameri-can rapper iLLspokinn, and on 30th, a night on our freshly re-opened roof terrace with Austro-persian superstar singer Saedi. Enjoy!

Gary moore was born on 4 April 1952 and has been one of the most influential guitarists for al-most forty years. As his birthday approaches, we cannot resist slowing down and remembering his greatness with hungarian band run for power and international guitarists Cliff moore, henrik freischlader and harrisen Larner-main. This event is organised by The international Gary moore fan Club, so you can be sure that it will be filled with honest admiration.

You want to hear the melancholic side of hungarian indie? Search no longer, as newcomer Elefánt have just released their debut album full of bittersweet post-chanson, singer-songwriter norbert Kristóf has finally found himself a perfect live band, and Blahalousiana have an enchanting singer girl in the front who really knows how to rock out! Three hungarian acts, different styles, same quality.

Are you sick and tired of all the tourist stuff they try to force down your throat? Do you doubt the credibility of “authentic” hungarian musicians or find them too old-fashioned? Budapest Bar have achieved something in the past years that is more difficult than gaining some attention: they built a massive crowd who rediscovered gypsy music and traditional hungarian salon jazz through the voice of today’s popular singers and the skilled descendants of traditional musician dynasties.

if you love metal, you probably like hungarian metal too, but what happens if we unplug it all and leave the bands with a few acoustic guitars? Will the music remain heavy without badass solos and loud drums? Cadaveres (with ex-members of Ektomorf and Chaos of Disorder) and young, but already adored Leander take the risk to play us their own songs and a few covers to show their soft side and totally confuse us.

The sad is the void that frank Zappa left in the world, the happy are the news that his musicians, mothers of invention didn’t stop keeping the legend alive. napoleon murphy Brock, robbie mangano, Don preston, Tom fowler and Chris Garcia had a self-ironic name change and toured all around the world in the last ten years. Speaking of traditions and keeping legends alive, we cannot disregard hungarian psych-rocker band Syrius that shined brighter than any other in their time, and will also be back on stage partly in members and wholeheartedly in soul by the Zappa-Syrius memorial Band.

The third occasion of the Kiosk series will be a bit different: Crimson, Chrom and Grasshop bring you marco niemerski, alias Tensnake from Germany who plays a major role in revitalising italodisco and funk and stirs it up with house in his magic music pot. The producer of Coma Cat and Congolal now transport you into the 80s with a future feel and electronic vibe. Back to the future!

Chuck prophet is a true veteran in all this singer-songwriter business: he has released his critically acclaimed 13th album last year and is touring with his band The mission Express. Don’t be afraid of rock ballads as Chuck prophet is straightforward and melodic without any cheesyness for the impact’s sake. As for hungarians, Balaton is not only a lake but a major alternative band who started their carreer approximately at the same time as Chuck prophet with different influences but a similar outcome. Check them out yourself on the 13th!

We just can’t get enough of nordic electronic music! With his cool minimalism and inventiveness, pär Grindvik is a major producer, record store owner and label manager with a taste for old and new, taking chunks and putting them into his great techno blender to achieve perfection. As usual, the one-of-a-kind visuals will be provided by Glowing Bulbs and isu and Dork will be our host djs.

As part of our birthday programme, we bring you richard Dorfmeister and rupert huber from Vienna with their downtempo project Tosca. The act called ODEOn is played on two pianos at the same time with many effects and visualisation by Ars Electronica future Lab. Besides the pro-ducer duo, we will have special guest musicians JayJay Jones and rob Gallagherr, what will result in a complex audiovisual performance, but if you are looking forward to hear the big hits, you won’t be disappointed either.

American and Belgian experimental musicians who think outside the box and are not easy to catch playing. They all perform at this very special night organised by Uh, the mentor of fresh hungarian talents like performer raymond Kiss, and are responsible for the most prominent noise events in Budapest and monthly demo shows across Europe, for example at last year’s Berlin music Week.

Luis Vazquez is not an average mojave desert kid - he makes the darkest music you can ever imagine you will dance to and uses noise as an extra instrument in the music of his formerly one-man, now five-piece band. having a comprehensive ear for the 80s darkwave and post punk, this prolific artist updated our ideas of shoegazing with the use of a lot of electronics and a bit of minimalism - exactly what holalo djs will present us before and after the Soft moon show.

José González is a name that may not be familiar to everyone, but if we mention heartbeat, everyone will start humming the tune heard on tv and on the radio. his comforting sounds and soul-healing lyrics are now accompanied by Swedish musicians Tobias Winterkorn, Elias Araya, Joel Wästberg and Johan Grettve who have added new layers to the intimacy of his folk-inspired music and humble voice. This show is part of A38’s birthday celebration and is preceded by a performance of hungarian alternative musicians and poets.

H2O, Nations Afire, The Idoru, HanoiAs fast as the meaning of melodic hardcore changes, we can only be sure of one thing: if we put these two words together, then we must think about h2O, a core band of the genre. That is why we invited them to play on 21 April.Bands founded by former roadies are quite common in the hardcore/punk scene, for example Dave Smalley was Dag nasty’s hand before DYS, and Embrace’s ian macKaye used to be the helper of minor Threat. henry rollins was touring with Black flag before he started playing for them, the frontman of 25 ta Life used to work for Agnostic front, and American nightmare consists of the crew of Ten Yard fight. We could make a long list of similar bands but let’s talk about Toby morse, who was roading for Sick of it All when he has realised he can do more than moving a band’s amplifiers on and off stage, and in the middle of the 90s he founded h2O, one of the most significant melodic punk bands. With songs that are filled with pure energy, lyrics that take responsibility and punk melodies with hardcore dynamics , they are timeless and always play in front of crowds.

After their fifth album, the band still can’t make any mistakes: Go reminds us of their first albums’ energy and was written to be sung by big crowds. After an eight-year hiatus spent with world tours, Bridge nine in 2008 was a relief for eager fans. And this is what h2O are best at: they can make technically everybody interested in their world - even Toby’s six-year-old son who is often used as an announcer on their shows in the States. The other band that night will be Los Angeles-based nations Afire, coming from rise Against on the side of Chris Chasse, the drummer of Death by Stereo, Todd hennig and ignite, where their Last of the Believers project can really boom. They will present their first full-length album, The Ghosts We Will Become and their confusingly catchy punk songs. hungarian guest bands will be fonogram-winner The idoru and hanoi from the east side of the country.

NEWS6

Our 10th anniversary is not only the biggest party you can imagine, but also the result of hard work that we will never stop doing. Keeping up with technology, we have launched our instagram providing an insider’s look into the ship’s everyday life and our filmmaker crew made it possible to start a Ustream channel, where people could watch our concerts live and rebroadcast for a whole week - and we aim to make this standard practice. 30 April will be another milestone in our online presence, as we launch A38 Blog and Tumblr, where a knowledge of hungarian is not necessary. follow us, because there’s more to come in a suprisingly little time!

imre Kálmán and ferenc Lehár in Vienna, Gustav mahler in Buda-pest – only three names of many, that prove, Austrian and hungarian culture have been tied to each other with a thousand strings. This close relationship is very much alive today too, even if we do not exchange conductors, but in a very strong flow of influences coming from the pop scene of the USA, Britain and other it’s really worth having a look at other places with new ideas, maybe first of all at those coming from our neighborhoods. A38 has always intended to promote at its best the music trends of our neighbours, both newcomers and stars, performers and bands. Austria has never been an exception in this sense, where we had really plenty musicians from, thank to which some of them became real festival-favourites, like the parov Stelar Band, or the famous Viennese domestic big band, Vienna Art Orchestra, while also some very important newcomers of contemporary electronica like Elektro Guzzi, Waxolutionists or Dunkelbunt introduced here. This work of ours got a huge support from the Austrian Cultural forum, one of the closest partners of the A38, since the cooperation of the

two institutions is as old as the Ship. The Austrian Cultural forum has been supporting the A38’s work for ten years, and during this time magnificent artits like Soap & Skin, parov Stelar, richard Dorfmeister and the madrid de los Austrias, Dzihan & Kamien, Count Basic, !DelaDap, Louie Austen, the Sofa Surfers and others – international stars and less known great artists have performed aboard as well. Our Noises from the Neighbourhood – Zajok a szomszédból inventious series presenting the best, freshest, most exciting and most popular productions of contemporary music has presented a very good part of the actual Austrian music scene. All these projects together brought the best of Austrian rock, jazz, world and electronic music to tens of thousands of people making up the hungarian audience. And if we add to this the number of those reached by the tv-broadcasts of concerts on the hungarian state tv channels, then we can really say that a truly huge number of people have learnt what kind of noise actually comes from our neighbourhood.

A38 is the reincarnation of ‘Tripolie’, a Ukranian stone-carrier ship, built in 1968. The name comes from Artemovsk, which is the ship prototype, and this one was the 38th unit of the ‘Artemovsk’ class. The re-building project lasted for one and a half years. Architects, ship engineers, acoustic designers, electricians, mu-sicians and promoters contributed their skills and experience to make it a both artist and audience friendly place.

After years of constant development, A38 has become a cul-tural entertainment centre with international programme, a restaurant, five bars, one main concert hall, open-air terraces and lounges - all in one aboard as one of the most fascinat-ing venues in Budapest. Since its opening it became the flag-ship of Budapest nightlife, a must-see spectacle on the Danube with scenic view and one of Europe’s coolest clubs, which has been voted ‘The World’s Greatest Bar’ – according to the poll of Lonely planet in 2012.

A38 Ship is located in Budapest, at the Buda side of petőfi bridge, easily accessible by a few minutes walk from tram 4 and 6 “petőfi híd budai hídfő” stop or by BKV public trans-port ships.

The concert hall is a place for live shows and parties, and several bars ship-wide are open for the audience to chat and have a drink. The restaurant offers a daily menu every weekday from 12h to 15h for 1150 hUf.

Our roof terrace is closed in the autumn/winter season and reopens in April 2013.for our smoking visitors, we have a heated smoking terrace area with its own bar.

Eszter Csurka: Home Sweet HomeApril 9-19 between 7h and 18h

A38-MVM Light Painting April 21-28 between 20h and 24h

Eszter Csurka’s main theme is the human body, but it is left alone on canvas, lost in a theatrical scenery. The pictures exist as presentations rather than representations, not signifying anything else but themselves, and it is this cold objectivity that we can see at most of Csurka’s paintings. They don’t refer to anything universal and independent, they only show us figures with strong gestures and perfect aesthetics without explanation.

in her latest works we can not only see humans in brave pinks and scarlets but flower stills again. Are these colours warm or cold? is the expression „home, sweet home” sweet or sour? See it for yourself and decide.

in spring 2013, our series of high success, A38-mVm Light painting continues when the sun goes down. Light paintings always take place in our exhibition space and are only available for a few days, as internationally acclaimed VJ team Glowing Bulbs realize their wildest imaginations of colour, light and sound. We have already had a giant robot, a caleidoscope, a boat floating in nowhere and male and female dolls made out of paper,
