Vienna has always been a cultural centrepoint even for hungarians, so we are always curious what is trendy there at the moment. this summer, it sure will be 50s to 70s inspired retropop, with acts like singer marla Blumenblatt and psychedelic rock dj tiga lily. But the most danceable tunes will come from Austrian producer tanz Baby! and his five-piece live band. Just tanz!

Airbourne was founded in 2003 by the o’Keefe brothers and now they are releasing their third album Black Dog Barking. pumping new life into the Australian hard rock scene, these guys know how to make everyone crazy again for old-fashioned idols. enjoying the support of such big names like lemmy from motörhead, they have already overtaken the whole word.

for our interview with drummer Ryan o’Keefe, see page 6.

Did you know that there is a hungarian indie rock band that has been to sXsW and performed a series of shows in the states before B-52’s? the moog have made it and they are not finished at all – though they are back at the country to satisfy old fans and show us some new tunes. evil men have no songs also have a massive fanbase, and speaking of the new project of eZ Basic’s Árpád szarvas , it is not much of a surprise.

Veronika harcsa jazz-singer is one of those charming and talented personalities we are the most proud of. now that she has qualified for the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, she barely gives concerts in hungary this is why we are lucky to have her with her triphop band Bin-Jip on this friday and as a guest of impro project Random trip the next tuesday. once you see her, you will understand why does a whole country adore this former it-expert with the coy smile.

poetic folk from the loneliest mountains of hungary with a touch of ambient and storytelling. Bajdázó is the favourite of the critics, while Zombori is a runner-up in the world music category at this year’s talentometer and will play on our stage just three days before the contest final. Cirkusz-ka is the acoustic folk duo of Anna szlávics and tamás Rock, and they will start the show on this evening.

Danish prodigy Brian Batz started making music in the intimate atmosphere of his own home and soon reached the complexity that required a five-piece band while playing live. indicating the otherwordliness of the music, musicians wear Donnie Darko-esque masks on stage that you can also prepare yourself – they have just uploaded the instructions on their facebook. Before them, hungarian experimental duo Kanagawa will play in the last rays of sunlight.

ON THe COVeR6

what’s the story behind your new video Live It up?We had fun making it, we have shot it back in melbourne, Australia. the concept behind it was to just live it up, have a good time. We had this great idea of getting all that vintage cars to circle all around while we perform, and get a couple of ladies like we always do… it was comin’ out really well.

At the moment, you are in Springfield. How’s the American tour going so far?yes, we’re on the ride with shinedown. it goes really good, we started back on 17 April and we did six headline shows and we’re doing a bunch of before shows for shinedown. it’s been really great. We’re still in America, but we’re nearing the end of the tour.

How’s the reception of the new songs by the audience?yes, we haven’t really played from the album anything else than live it Up at the moment, since we haven’t come out with the rest of the songs. if we play live it Up during the show, we get a good response from the audience, and they are always very positive, everyone seems to be liking it.

what was the concept behind the album? We wanted to go back to our roots a bit more, just wanted to make a really good rock album again. in a while we wanted to go back and make an album a little bit more like Runnin’ Wild, just old rock and roll tracks. We had a good amount of time to get this album right, so we concentrated on writing it. Kind of went back to our old material, and we definitely got the result that we were looking for.

Is the ”Black Dog” rock and roll itself?the name Black Dog Barking was something Joel and i have come up with. there’s a few different meanings to it. What we’ve been through with the band during our carreer, the highs and the lows and the hardship of founding a rock and roll band. Just riding your own wild kind of thing and that’s just one meaning to it. But to me it’s just a cool fitting album title, just a rocking name.

Many people first heard your songs in video games. Do you play a lot of video games in the nightliner? When we can and are not in a hurry, a couple of guys play video games and computer games on laptops, so yeah, we love to play video games. eA Games put a few of our songs on their games, which is a great thing, because a lot of people likes to play them. i think it is a modern form of radio, getting our material spread.

Do you play before the shows?sometimes we do, depends on schedule. Any spare time we get we just try to kill it in the bus, try to kick back, watching movie or playing a game. We’re pretty busy, once we pull up at the venue in a new town, with the soundcheck and all that. And because we’re doing a support show at the moment, we have to get upstage a bit earlier.

Do you have any messages to the Hungarian fans?We can’t wait to get to europe. there’s less than two weeks left of this American tour, and we can’t wait to get to hungary. it’s been a very good year and a half since we were there last time for some festival. see you on stage. Rock and roll!

A38 is the reincarnation of ‘tripolie’, a Ukranian stone-carrier ship, built in 1968. the name comes from Artemovsk, which is the ship prototype, and this one was the 38th unit of the ‘Artemovsk’ class. the re-building project lasted for one and a half years. Architects, ship engineers, acoustic designers, electricians, musi-cians and promoters contributed their skills and experience to make it a both artist and audience friendly place.

After years of constant development, A38 has become a cultural entertainment centre with international programme, a restaurant, five bars, one main concert hall, open-air terraces and lounges - all in one aboard as one of the most fascinating venues in Budapest. since its opening it became the flagship of Budapest nightlife, a must-see spectacle on the Danube with scenic view and one of europe’s coolest clubs, which has been voted ‘the World’s Greatest Bar’ – according to the poll of lonely planet in 2012.

A38 ship is located in Budapest, at the Buda side of petőfi bridge, easily accessible by a few minutes walk from tram 4 and 6 “petőfi híd budai hídfő” stop or by BKV public transport ships.

the concert hall is a place for live shows and parties, and several bars ship-wide are open for the audience to chat and have a drink.the restaurant offers a daily menu every weekday from 12h to 15h for 1150 hUf.

our roof terrace is closed in the autumn/winter season and reopens in April 2013.for our smoking visitors, we have a heated smoking terrace area with its own bar.

Ágnes Bihari: Face to FaceAfter her 2011 Cuban-themed exhibition tránsito privado, Ágnes Bihari won a mexican national scholarship. on the occasion of her next exhibition, she presents us her year spent there. Bihari founds her visual experiences and the subjects of her photos by chance – on the streets, in subways, on rooftops, at doorways. holding the camera in her hand, she finds herself face to face with strangers and does not get embarrassed, but raises trust in the native inhabitants that know the foreign land better. the people on the photos turn towards the camera with a real naturality like they have always been familiar with it, like the photographer was wearing some kind of camouflage, though we know it’s on the contrary.

”the 20th anniversary of the intermedia Department of the hungarian Univer-sity of fine Arts is going to be the first occasion they their work at A38. the core of this specific installation and supplementary projections is the film that can never be directly seen or touched in theatres, only the incorporeal illusion projected by the light passing through it. the transparent curtain of films, the swirling film rolls and the sequence of images on them can be interesting on their own right, as in the age of analog and digital electronics, not everybody thinks of films obviously like that.” (Ágnes háy) At mária Rigó’s editing course, students have been working with 35 and 16 mm film strips for almost ten years, film in the Window will be the never before seen showcase of this work at the intermedia Department.

Bihari is brave: she never melts into her environment, but she is always part of the world she wants to be seen. the exhibition contains portraits of three and landscapes of mexico’s pictoral sceneries and urban pampas, embedding the unknown faces into their own atmosphere, their streets, houses, offices and their magical mountains and slopes. the exhibition will be opened on 18 June at 8 pm by photography historian Károly Kincses.music by András Wahorn and Ádám Balázs.
