oliver thomas Johnson, best known under his pseudonym Dorian concept, is a quintessential figure on the current european electronic scene, whose musical world includes techno, grime, hip hop, dance and even experimental electronica. the recurring guest of the A38 ship hits the stage with this three-piece, right after the opening concert of wonderful local artist marge.

one of the most brilliant and unique bands of contemporary european jazz, fire! orchestra, consists of nearly twenty members, who came from the creme of the swedish music scene. the most dominant personalities in the collective are free-punk saxophone player mats gustafsson (who’s performed on the ship several times), percussionist Andre-as werliin and bassist Johan Berthling. fire! orchestra present their brand new album ritual on the A38. interview on page 7.

inspired by the best turbonegro and hellacopters traditions, norwegian band Kvelertak catapulted straight towards world fame with their debut album. no wonder, as “norwegian metal” is nowadays a reference point that can only be matched by “British scientists.” the northern guys are coming to the ship with their third longplayer, nattersferd, full of magnificent riffs and intimidating lyrics, sung, of course, in norwegian. interview on page 9.

it’s strange to believe that Boysetsfire were formed more than twenty years ago. luckily, they come back to Budapest quite often - this time, they’re performing on the ship. the attitude of the band is punky, political and expressive, and their motto (“the real form of patriotism is protest”) perfectly defines what they believe in. they’re coming to the A38 with their untitled album, released last year.

funk-soul dance material with lots of ham-mond organ by two bands that are related in style and who bid farewell to the Dutch eU presidency ending right on this day with a monumental house party. local eight-piece Kéknyúl have just released their latest album crowded Universe, and Dutch band Beans & fatback sound as if the Black Keys played tarantino soundtracks.

here’s an incredibly cool band, one of the biggest darlings of the independent music press: Allah-las, from los Angeles, who are inspired by the psychedelic garage rock music of the late sixties - especially the Kinks, the Zombies and love. the four-piece, formed in 2008 and led by frontman miles michaud, has released two albums so far, their latest work titled worship the sun came out in 2014.

started by up-and-coming local artists, normafa records is one of the most special hungarian independent labels. on this night you can watch several of the label’s artists: post-folk experimentalist musica moralia, Diy expert imanexperiment, acoustic-folk performer cz.K. sebő and trippy electronica artist charles B. Barkin. heads up for the new talents!

local psychedelic rock band middlemist red broke through in 2015, and this year they don’t seem to relax either. right now they’re working on their new album which they say will be quite a bit different from the group’s previous work, featuring synthesizers and dancey grooves. of course they like to take a few breaks from the studio - the A38 concert is a good proof for that.

the A38 ship hosts the finale of rakéta festival presenting the freshest, most exciting and experimental local artists and bands, such as psychedelic surf punk outfit nobody elses, garage rockers the Beans, catchy guitar pop group felső tízezer (meaning “Upper ten”), and also tape Kebab (borrowing their name from krautrock legends can) and 40Days who have been massively influenced by cocteau twins.

one band (ozone mama) that evokes the beefy and at the same time trippy rock music of the late sixties / early seventies, and another one (ghost of you from the czech republic), representing contemporary guitar/keyboard-driven psychedelic chic. last year they released their debut album glacier And the city, and they mention radiohead, Beck and former red hot chili peppers guitarist John frusciante among their main influences.

YOUlÏ- horányi Juli

recognized earlier as the runner-up of the fifth season of the hungarian X factor, Juli horányi is definitely a lot more than a singer who almost won a talent show a few years ago. she’s entered the eurovision contest, and she’s also known as a member of the bands plüss and mïus. As a fresh nominee for a fonogram award (the hungarian grammy), Juli is presenting her fabulous pop songs on the roof terrace of the A38 ship!

local composer / trumpet player lőrinc Ba-rabás is one of the most noted musicians of his generation. with his former outfit Barabás lőrinc eklektric, he took a huge step out of his jazzy comfort zone, towards the world of poppier sounds, full of grooves. he’s pla-yed with the likes of Bonobo, nicola conte, valerie June and erik truffaz, and on this night, leading his quartet, he is set to give yet another memorable concert with local female singer Janka Koszi.

named after the well-known south Korean movie, Bin Jip is a formation featuring internationally acclaimed hungarian jazz artist veronika harcsa, guitarist Bálint gyémánt and DJ/producer Andrew J. they’re recurring guests on the A38 ship, and this time they’re performing a set that’s built around their 2014 longplayer heavy.

if you like funky music, you like Junk. the local ten-piece funky commando features four players on horns, the vocal side is also strong, and lest we forget, they like to use electronic beats as well. Although they’ve started play their own songs, they still cover amazing funky dance anthems from Daft punk, herbie hancock, Jamiroquai, stevie wonder or prince.

formed in 2014 by Zoltán cséry and petra pákai, patché is a fusion not just of names, but also of musical styles. the two artists blend pop and jazz with quite a heavy psychedelic touch - they’ve won awards abroad and they’re not afraid to cover such immortal classics as the Beatles’ come together. Augmented by three more musicians, their concert set must not be missed.

two young, fresh and unique acts on the roof terrace of the A38 on this night. Drastic putto is fronted by former Kiscsillag and Kispál drummer Ábel mihalik (also known for being a multiinstrumentalist) and plays a mixture of pop, artrock, jazz and alternative music, whereas Zombori blend folk, pop, electronica, dance and world music.

the hungarian audience was first introduced to hien when she was a little girl. the exotic singer (of vietnamese descent) has become a mature and beautiful woman in front of our eyes, who doesn’t only enchant us with her special voice, but also with her own compositions. the best proof for her talent is her album sweet talk which she presented on the A38 with huge success. now she’s returning to the ship to seduce as again with her brilliant tunes.

it’s quite a safe bet to call singer-songwriter róbert Bérczesi a national treasure without exaggeration. As well as being the frontman of celebrated alternative band hiperkarma, he has time for other projects - for instance intimate acoustic solo gigs, which feature his best compositions and several cover versions as well.

they might not be an arena-filling act, but they never intended to be one in the first place - when they opened for coldplay on a stadium tour, they realized they feel much more at ease in the smaller clubs. led by Jonathan Meiburg, shearwater are returning to hungary after four years, for their first ever concert on the a38 ship.

if one wants to tell the story of shearwater, it is advisable to start with Jonathan meiburg, who’s the think tank of the Austin, texas collective. Born in Baltimore, maryland, exactly forty years ago, young Jonathan spent his formative years in several American states - he went to high school in north carolina, and later got a degree from a university in tennessee, where he majored in english, and also studied religion. with a scholarship, he had the possibility to visit remote places such as the falkland islands (a recurring location in his career and work), tierra del fuego (aka the land of fire), Australia, new Zealand and canada. in Austin, one of the coolest musical cities of the world and home of noted festival sXsw, he enrolled at another university, and that was where he became an avid ornithologist.meiburg formed his band whu gnu in Austin in 1993 - they released a folk rock album (naked And without teeth) in 1997, but soon after the group disbanded due to personal issues of the members. By the time whu gnu broke up, meiburg was already a member in two other acts: okkervil river and shearwater. in both bands, he closely collaborated with will sheff, and playing in two bands proved to be alright for both of them for a while. But not forever, of course.

shearwater (which was named after a kind of seabird, in close relation to the albatross) started out with quieter psych-folk songs, and their first album, the Dissolving room, came out in 2001 on grey flat records. interestingly, the lyrics had little, or hardly anything to do with birds at the time. the line-up also featured Kim Burke, meiburg’s now ex-wife on upright bass, other members included drummer thor harris and multiinstrumentalist howard Draper.2002 saw the release of album no. 2 titled everybody makes mistakes (still not much reference to birds) on misra records, and two years later the band brought out winged life, shearwater’s first true ornithologist

longplayer. After the thieves ep (birds on the cover, of course) in 2005, sheff decided to quit the group and concentrate fully on okkervil river. the following year, shearwater released their last album on misra, the nico-influenced palo santo, on misra, and changed labels; 2008’s rook (a kind of bird, no surprises here…) came out on a much bigger record company, matador. it was around this time that meiburg decided to leave okkervil river, but he still remains good friends with sheff and co., and features on their subsequent releases. Also on that year, shearwater pla-yed concerts as an opening act for coldplay in arenas and stadium - an experience that meiburg since then simply calls ‘bizarre.’

By this time, shearwater’s music was more a kind of guitar-driven indie rock (with the occasional folk influences, of course), and 2010’s the golden Archipelago even had traces of prog-rock. this was no wonder as meiburg is a fan of pink floyd, with a special fondness for the albums the final cut and Animals. A few months later saw the release of shearwater is enron, a collection of instrumental tracks, and the band parted ways with matador, but they signed to another very cool label: sub pop records.

influenced by the sound of gorillaz and the songwriting of the Beatles, 2012’s Animal Joy (with not a bird, but a stuffed polar bear on the cover) came out on their new label, and on the subsequent tour, the band finally visited Budapest. the follow-up (fellow travelers) was not a proper al-bum but a collection of covers by bands that shearwater had toured with over the years. members of each act were invited to contribute, on one condition: they could not play on their own song.

After the longest ever break between albums in shearwater’s career, their eighth longplayer Jet plane And oxbow saw the light of day earlier this year - to universal critical acclaim. meiburg (who’s no longer a resident of Austin, but resides in new york city, and is working on his first book, on guess what? Birds!) and co. went on tour with the new songs as usual and they even took the time to cover the whole lodger album by David Bowie at one of their concerts. soon they’re coming back to hungary, and we are more than glad to welcome them on the A38 ship.

Judit marjai actually draws with the light, she defines the shape of the dark with light, beautifully, carefully and quietly enough so that the light barely touches and caresses the face of darkness; it takes care of it and doesn’t wake it. its love is reflected on every object, every lively and lifeless thing that surrounds it.it sees something that doesn’t require an optical skill or a physical environment, for that matter.the summary of the sounds of reality ring and resonate together, namely in a way that every sound is able to materialize in a visual form, even a body.the light is not a toy, we could say.the presence of light is followed by a shadow.in the shadow, beauty sometimes hides or rests, at other times it runs into the light, escapes into it.Judit marjai creates pictures without means, sometimes slipping into the invisible visible, thus letting the drama of the microworld quite close to herself.in the artist, the desire of cognition opens doors into the realm of knowledge which let lesser known new perspectives flow out from the creational prison of confined conventions. opening its doors, the shining of the surrounding world pours in, beauty and ugliness flow hand in hand, the nicely faint calmness is already dancing and the gasping rampage is dropping off to sleep.‘Beauty’ is a terrifying monster, its powerful grip is an unmeasurable embrace, in which gorgeous crystal shining flows out from the deeply cold soul of the ‘monster’. it glows and blazes, and embraces with its unlimited love.Judit marjai does not make extractions from reality. she does not cut out magnified fragments from the phenomena of the visible world.she summarizes every lovable experience of the methods of digital photography and picture creation, and also the pixel world of computers.she does not dip into the picture, though; she records the clean touch of the picture in her prints.

she does not abstract in a simplifying way, she does not transubstantiate or aestheticize.she does not recreate, does not make conceptions and does not tumble contexts.much rather she retains the presence of the abstraction of reality in a unique way, she records it, composes it into a picture and makes it a personal experience for the observer.her works are in fact dramatically realistic. what happens is seemingly the recording of the moment of truth, yet somehow the physiology of phenomena and material reality stand out in the relation of time and space.

Judit marjai tells the truth consistently, and she dares to say instead of us, to us, because of us, for herself and definitely in the language of art, that ‘that’s what there is.’And it’s very good that it is this way.” - written by József szurcsik

Brain Bar alsoon the a38 shipthis year marks the second occasion that the ambitious central-european technological and “future” festival Brain Bar Budapest is being organized. this time the A38 ship is joining the event, and collaborates in the programs with Budapest essentials. Although the backbone of Brain Bar will be the Akvárium Klub, the A38 will host several additional programs of the festival.

During the festival, the connection between artificial intelligence and art will be discussed for a whole day. there will be a kinetic dance show based on extended reality: the project of Barbadian-born contemporary dancer valencia James, swedish research engineer Alexander Berman and the hungarian creative coding team XorXor explores the connection of artificial intelligence and contemporary dance. other programs include a roundtable conversation and the visitors can try out - as seen on the cover, with graphics that can be read on smart phones as well - the possibilities of extended reality and kinetic installations on the spot. At the exhibitions, with the help of modern communicational devices, smartphones, new bridges can be built between artist and visitor.

More and more album releases on the a38 and the ship’s blogthe A38 ship is a popular album release location: the first class sound technique and the excellent acoustics draw several local artists to present their latest albums here on a monthly basis. in our series started in the spring, you can hear the new albums online as well, not only at concerts. the blog of the ship (blog.a38.hu) has more and more online album premieres.

thanks to the support of the cseh tamás prog-ram, we can hold two-three album releases per month from now on. After the fish! al-bum (which broke records on Deezer), the A38 blog premiered the latest album of Áron András aka Apey. the band hello hurricane also debuted their first record what can i hide with us recently. furthermore, there is more to these albums than just the listening experience - in each case, the songs are accompanied by detailed musician’s commentaries, interviews and other exclusive material.

the tiger lilliesposter competitionthe A38 ship has always had a strong connection with contemporary hungarian graphics, street art and applied graphics. the graphic artist of the ship, Andrej tóth has won the cultural poster of the year Award several times in a row with his works made for the A38 (and the ship’s programs). his concert and program posters for the A38 have already been introduced at the műcsarnok as well.

After the sóley concert in December, we have created a second competition for applied graphics students of the metropolitan college of Budapest. they had to design a poster for the A38 of the tiger lillies this may, and we selected the best one through a public vote. on the ship’s facebook page, hundreds of people sent their votes and the winner became 17-year-old mais Ahmad from syria.

how and when did the idea come to widen the Fire! trio into an orchestra? how did you choose musicians, and what was the main criteria?the very first idea was to make a huge party together in stockholm inviting all our friends to join for a massive extended trio. it ended up being 30 musicians at the legendary fylkingen venue in stockholm. we wanted to play trio music in a larger setting with our friends. we did. problem was that it was way too much fun and the music was already rockin’ from that first concert. so we decided right away to make this more of a permanent ensemble. in that first concert we played the piece exit for the first time. it was an insane evening. everybody was either screaming or just smiling. ritual is the third piece we do with the third version of the ensemble. we change personnel a bit for every new piece we do, depending on the specifics of the piece. in Budapest you will present the third record by Fire! Orchestra. tell us a few words about the new album, where was it recorded and what’s the orchestra line-up on the record and live?the tour that we will do now in europe in June – old school classic nightliner bus activity - means that we will play the piece ritual with almost exactly the same line-up as on the recorded album. nate wooley on trumpet couldn’t make the recordings in December, but will be joining us on the whole tour. we had to adjust the ensemble a bit, since some people were already booked for other tours. ritual is a new piece with lyrics by myself and erik lindegren (one of the most amazing poets ever in sweden and somehow the founder of modern poetry in sweden together with gunnar ekelöf).the album was recorded at Benny Andersson’s (of ABBA fame) studio in stockholm last December and mixed the months after by mikael werliin, our sound guy who will also do the live sound on the tour. we’re very excited about the album – it is the best sounding album we did and the most hitting, ferocious music so far! do you have a vision of a piece of music which you haven’t been able to realize for technical or financial reasons?of course. economy and logistics limit the possibilities for an artist and a group. if we could, we would extend the group a bit in the future and also make tours in north and south America as well as in Japan and Australia. the interest for the group is massive but it is an expensive beast to tour with.we’d also like to work with a larger string orchestra at some point with both the trio and the orchestra. But we’ll see. we’ve done the impossible before with this group. we’ve toured for two years with the orchestra

with absolutely no economical support and we still made it. But, yes. touring with 20 people is a logistical nightmare, but a musical and social dream. it is truly amazing what you can do when you play with so many people, from so many different musical genres.that has always been the idea of the group: to bring in musical elements from all kinds of music and transform it via the members of the orchestra. you hear what you want, of course. But, there are definitely elements from the backgrounds of all players in the band. free improvised music, contemporary music, electronica, psych, free jazz, prog, rock, etc - it’s all in here. fuck the genres. fuck the borders. mix it up! – fuck it up. it is all up for grabs! You have a strong punk music background. Besides Fire! and the thing, you recently toured and recorded with thurston Moore, Merzbow, Balázs Pándi and Brian chippendale of lighting Bolt and even had a theatre project. For you personally, where is the meeting point of free jazz and punk music?it’s all the same! it’s all political or should be at least. And it’s really the same shit. Just with slightly different instrumentations. whatever kicks me, whatever challenges me – i just freakin’ need to check out! And than work on it. You have a home in Nickelsdorf, a town on the border of hungary and austria, and you played in Budapest several times. what do you think about the hungarian jazz and improvised music scene, and what would you suggest the young musicians pay attention to?every scene has its ups and downs. it’ll always change. some periods a scene can be very active and then just fall asleep. But you just need to do things! it’s all Diy! will always be, no one else is doing it for you.what i heard of the hungarian scene is very good: i always liked what markos Albert have been doing! Balázs pándi played me some stuff and gave me some records – there’s some noisy shit around, yes! But in general you just need to do things. make it all happen. set up concerts, set up festivals, produce records, make it all happen! it’s not difficult. And just make sure to book and arrange stuff that you really fuckin’ love! create networks and make sure the international connection is there. it’s a huge international family around! And include rather than exclude. Both when it comes to musicians and genres. it is great to make research with artists from various genres. Do not just limit shit to improvised music and free jazz – there is amazing stuff in all genres of music – it can all be used. it can all be fucked with!

it is summer. everything is getting busier around the A38 restaurant as well. Because, among others, you can already take our summer menu in your hands.

for our summer menu, we have chosen lighter dishes, thus from the starters, it is worth trying the garlic crab on skewers, which we serve on a green salad bed, or the yoghurt eggplant, served with “pászka”.

in our earlier monthly offer, the green peas with cappuccino radish foam and bacon chips proved to be very popular, therefore this dish of ours has entered the menu, hopefully for the enjoyment of all our guests.

needless to say, we have also kept our vegetarian guests in mind, and they can choose from a larger selection now, and what they must definitely try is our Nameco mushroom risotto.it is worth visiting us not only in the evening, but also in the afternoon after work, and relax on our terrace with some refreshing lemonade or a glass of fine wine and delicious bruschetta.

Norwegian black and roll brigade, Kvelertak is returning to Budapest to present their latest album, Nattesferd, to the local headbangers. so we asked them about it, and also the government, singing in Eng-lish and other topics.

You’ve already performed in Budapest two times. what kind of memories do you have about those concerts?i remember the audience being completely insane, it was mindblowing. can’t wait to play there again!

You’ve talked in interviews before about how, early in your band’s career, you were given advice by happy tom from turbonegro that you would need to sing in English to succeed internationally — how do you feel about that now?i feel great about it, it’s good to prove him wrong. i don’t think it would be the same with english vocals, i think the norwegian language is part of the appeal. it makes us stand out more. it’s also a country that’s close to most metalheads’ hearts, i guess!

what do you think, what is it about Norway that breeds so many great metal/punk bands? is it the support from the government?it’s definitely not because of the government. if you look at the black metal scene in the 90’s they didn’t get any support like that. Also you don’t really get any funding/support until your band kind of blows up, at least that’s how it was for us. we didn’t see much of money like that until we put out our first album and that was doing well. i don’t know why we have so many good metalbands, it must be because of the majestic nature and the shitty weather that we have here!

You’ve recorded Nattesferd in Norway with Nick terry, instead of Kurt Ballou. what inspired these choices?it was just time for us to do something new, it would have been boring and predictable to go record with Kurt Ballou again (even if he did great work on our first two records). the whole studio process was different,

the whole band recorded the album live („Kiss-live” anyway, of course we add layers and things like that) with nick terry engineering it in oslo so the whole album ended up sounding more organic and natural than before. i would say it sounds like a more accurate representation of what the band actually sounds like in a live-setting.

did your songwriting methods change with Nattesferd?the difference is that we spent a lot longer time writing this one and also the songwriting has been more of a collective group effort. the whole band would spend a lot of time just being a band and writing songs together in the practice space whereas before we would have more or less finished songs before practicing them.

any messages to hungarian fans?check out the new album, get into the new songs and come see us play! can’t wait till next time!

A38 is the reincarnation of ‘tripolie’, a Ukrainian stone-carrier ship, built in 1968. the name comes from Artemovsk, which is the ship prototype, and this one was the 38th unit of the ‘Artemovsk’ class. the re-building project lasted for one and a half years. Architects, ship engineers, acoustic designers, electricians, musi-cians and promoters contributed their skills and experience to make it a both artist and audience friendly place.

After years of constant development, A38 has become a cultural entertainment centre with international programme, a restaurant, five bars, one main concert hall, open-air terraces and lounges - all in one aboard as one of the most fascinating venues in Budapest. since its opening it became the flagship of Budapest nightlife, a must-see spectacle on the Danube with scenic view and one of europe’s coolest clubs, which has been voted ‘the world’s greatest Bar’ – according to the poll of lonely planet in 2012.

A38 ship is located in Budapest, at the Buda side of petőfi bridge, easily accessible by a few minutes walk from tram 4 and 6 “petőfi híd budai hídfő” stop or by BKv public transport ships.

the concert hall is a place for live shows and parties, and several bars ship-wide are open for the audience to chat and have a drink.the restaurant offers a daily menu every weekday from 12h to 15h for 1150 hUf.

our roof terrace is closed in the au-tumn/winter season and reopens in April 2016.for our smoking visitors, we have a heated smoking terrace area with its own bar.
