A Message From Our President
Lansing Chapter Members,
The holiday season is here! I hope that everyone has some well-deserved time off
planned to enjoy with family and friends. With all the hustle and constant pushes
to get things completed by year-end, it’s nice to know there’s an end in sight.
This month I wanted to share an interesting article I read about what Americans
are doing wrong when it comes to holiday giving. I found it interesting because the
title upset me for a moment, but as it should, brought me to reading the article in
its entirety. It stated some statistics, and some bold facts, but the basic point was
that Americans are giving, a lot, but not thoroughly researching where that sizeable
giving ends up. In giving, Americans are swept away by the testimonials, nicely put
together websites, the ease of making the donation, and possibly because their
friends or family are giving to that charity. The conclusion was that instead of
making the sizeable donation to a corporate charity, maybe consider helping the
neighboring ones. Those close to home. Consider the non-profit that keeps
sending you a newsletter every month or the family down the street that has been
struggling. It even went on to say that giving of money is not all that is needed, but
the giving of your time is just as needed. It was definitely something I needed to
read, and I felt grateful for the subtle, yet bold reminder, that sometimes steer us in
the right direction. I encourage all of our members to find their right way of giving
this holiday season, and throughout the year.
The next CPE event for the Chapter is on Tuesday, December 8.

Year End Frenzy and Beyond
I don’t know about you, but I’m exhausted! 2015 was a crazy, busy year and as it winds down, I am busier than ever! Are you all scrambling to get those remaining audits conducted? Final audit reports issued? Are you in the midst of conducting your annual audit risk assessments and planning your next audit schedule? Perhaps you’re under examination by regulatory agencies and external auditors simultaneously? Well, that just about sums up my year end. I hope yours is much less frantic.
In addition to all the work related year end scramble, I have yet to begin my holiday shopping! Now I know why new year resolutions are pledged. Vows to become better organized, spend more or less time on certain activities, improve our time management, etc. Basically everything that we did in the previ-ous year that helped create the accumulation at year end is reassessed and a plan made to avoid it in future years. Perhaps it is just me! But, if this applies to you, you’re in good company.
As insane and hectic as year end activities may be, we must take a deep breath and look back over the course of the year and celebrate our accomplishments. Was our impact positive? Did we help make pro-gressive changes and improvements within our organizations? Were we able to demonstrate our value? If not, what can we do better next year? How can we ensure our reputation is one of adding value? Each year end and the beginning of the next gives us a renewed opportunity to exhibit our significance. Once you’ve evaluated your performance for the past year, look ahead for new and exciting prospects; the road ahead is paved with an abundance of them!
I hope everyone has the opportunity to take a few moments to review 2015, congratulate yourselves on your accomplishments and make plans to make 2016 an even better year!
I wish everyone a safe, happy, and healthy holiday season and New Year!
Regards,
Melanie

Chapter Achievement Program (CAP)
CAP Progress Report
Do any of your internal audit activities earn Chapter Achievement
Program (CAP) points for your Lansing Chapter of the IIA? What is
CAP, why is it important and what can you do to help?
The Chapter Achievement Program (CAP) is designed by the Institute
of Internal Auditors to guide chapters for developing quality programs
and completing administrative duties to ensure it is meeting its
obligations to its membership. Points are awarded for each activity
based upon the activity in accordance with IIA guidelines. The goal is
to provide valuable professional activities and development
opportunities to the membership and earn CAP points while doing it!
Certain activities that are conducted by membership may qualify. If
any of your activities qualify or you would like to know whether they
qualify, please contact Ryan O’Rourke at [email protected].
There are four performance levels that can be achieved.
BRONZE - 685 CAP Points
SILVER - 1,060 CAP Points
GOLD - 1,560 CAP Points
PLATINUM - This is a special level created to recognize
chapters that attain GOLD status for 10 of 11 consecutive years.
QUALIFYING ACTIVITIES
Articles submitted or published in
Internal Auditor magazine
Speaking engagements at chapter
or other IIA meetings
Participation in establishment of a
student chapter of the IIA

The Lansing Chapter hopes to continue to hold the designation of PLATINUM. CAP points reported in No-
vember 2015 is 1117. The goal for CAP points to maintain the current designation is a minimum of 1560 each
calendar year. Retaining our status is of great importance, however, it is more important that we offer the
membership valuable services and we as members do our obligatory role within our organizations and com-
munities by reaching out, educating and proving our value. Be sure to notify Ryan O’Rourke at
[email protected] if you have any CAP points to report.
Points are reported to the IIA on the 10th of each month covering three areas:
Service to Members (primarily involves attendance at monthly meetings, conferences and seminars);
Service to the Program (involves areas including Advocacy for the IIA and involvement with Academic
