FROM THE RECTOR 9 November 2014 Dear Friends, Far from singing and dancing, the wedding Jesus describes in this Sunday’s parable is a formal ceremony with a series of hitches, which point to his intention of giving a lesson about the last judgement. All ten bridesmaids fall asleep: but that is not the point of the story, because the second coming will take the whole world by surprise. The mistake would be not to have made the necessary preparations for the feast. Those who have taken the precaution to bring plenty of oil light up the night and are able to meet the Bridegroom face to face. The foolish ones, whose supplies run short, bestir themselves too late: the door is shut in their faces. It is not just praiseworthy, but wise and prudent for us to remain faithful to the gospel, firm in faith, always loving. With every blessing, Fr Steven Salmon, Rector

PARISH NEWS Adult Baptisms: This Sunday we joyfully welcome Susie and Alistair into the family of the Church through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism at the 10:00am Eucharist today. Please pray for Susie and Alistair as they rejoice in sharing with us the Christian faith.

Music notes for today’s Family Eucharist: The anthem this morning has been especially chosen for this morning's baptism. Malcom Archer's (b. 1953) beautiful and melodic anthem is a setting of the well-known prayer by the thirteenth-century Bishop of Chichester (1197-1257): 'Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly.’ The voluntary is Master Tallis' Testament by the English composer Herbert Howells (1899-1983). Howells' work was inspired by the 1910 premier in Gloucester Cathedral of Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis by Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958). Howells describe his work as a 'footnote' to that great work.

Amnesty International letter-writing will take place today after both morning services. Letters will be sent to the Government of Egypt protesting against wrongful imprisonment of human rights defenders. Please speak to Neridah for more information.

Children’s Disco: St John's Playtime is hosting a Children's Disco on Saturday 15 November, 3:00-5:00pm in the Parish Centre. Bring your children or grandchildren along, ages up to seven years old. Come and enjoy watching them having fun dancing to the music. All welcome. Entry $10 per family for the Organ Fund. Contact Lynette Johnson 0408 254 125 if you need more information.

Mothers’ Union (MU): will hold its final gathering for the year with lunch at Bella Vista Café at North Head on Wednesday 19 November. The group is to meet for the 10am Healing Eucharist at St John's then, after morning tea, head to the Bella Vista Café. See Dn Sandra or Margaret Winters for further details.

Christ the King Sunday: Sunday, 23 November, 10:00am is the Sunday before Advent, and the last Sunday in the Church’s liturgical year. The Feast of Christ the King was instituted in 1925, and reminds Christians of their allegiance to their spiritual rule as distinct from earthly powers. The St John's choir will sing at the 8.00am service and once again we welcome The Cathedral Singers to the 10:00am Holy Eucharist. It will also be Dn Sandra's 25th Anniversary of Ordination. Wedding Anniversary Congratulations to Jacy and John Posener (11th) Happy Birthday to Tony Garman (10th), James Rynd (11th), Jessica Rynd, Shirley Tucker (15th)

ORGAN FUNDRAISING  –  Many thanks to those of you have donated so generously and supported the project with such enthusiasm. We are in the last few weeks of fund-raising and have raised an incredible amount of money: however, you may have noticed that there are still some lonely un-sponsored stop segments (one complete stop and six individual quarters) available to a loving home. It would be wonderful to have every key and every stop on the organ sponsored on our wonderful new instrument which has done so much to enhance our music-making here at St John's. Many thanks for your commitment and support of this exciting installation. Red Cross Blood Service: One in three Australians will need blood, but only one in thirty donates. Donated blood helps cancer patients, people with blood disorders, mothers-to-be and newborn babies, as well as trauma and surgical patients. The Mobile Blood Service is to be at Dee Why Surf Club on 17-20 November (12:30-7:00pm Mon-Tue, and 9:30am-4:00pm Wed-Thu). Please see the notice board in the lobby for information. To donate, first book a time on 13 14 95, then eat a substantial meal and drink three to four glasses of water in the hours before. Take your donor card or photo ID when you visit. Relationships Australia —a not-for-profit Australian organisation providing services on referral for individuals, families and communities, including family dispute resolution (mediation), support and education—completes another busy term at St John’s on Monday.

Christmas Giving: St John’s is again supporting the Anglicare “Toys ’n’ Tucker” appeal and Dee Why Women’s Refuge, helping needy families to enjoy some gifts and festive food on Christmas Day. Please see notices in the lobby and take flyers for family, friends or neighbours who may like to contribute. During Advent, please bring your gifts (new, unwrapped presents or hamper food), or donations you wish to make, between: 23 November and 10 December. Anglicare will collect items that are left with the office by Thursday 11 December. Items left between then and 18 December will be donated to the Dee Why Women’s Refuge.

Call for Volunteers: ACT for Peace, the well-known Christmas Bowl Appeal agency (part of the National Council of Churches in Australia), is calling for friends to become volunteers for speaking occasionally (up to four times a year) in support of their work. Training is provided. For information see details on the noticeboard in the lobby.
