To have attained and tomaintain that status takes thededication of countless volunteers. Iwould like to thank all of those whohave worked both upfront and behindthe scenes to make NWWS run sosmoothly. Thanks so much to our pastPresident, Shirley Jordan, for her role infacilitating this effort.

With Theresa Goesling and CindyBriggs as Co-Chairs, a huge contingentof workers came together to turn our75th Diamond Anniversary Celebrationinto that dream come true. One personwho will experience this dream at theconvention is Marshall Perrow, a 99year old artist who recently won Best ofShow in a recent exhibition in Olympia. If ever you need inspiration…

To all who served last year and toall the new volunteers who haverecently stepped into new committeepositions, I thank you. Positions stillneeding to be filled are an AVTechnician, Volunteer Coordinator, andGrants Writer. If you can serve in any ofthese roles, please contact me.

On theRoad,Again

I spentmost of themonth of Maytraveling theSouthwest, photographingand sketching. My principal

goal was to return to Canyon de Chelly(Pronounced de Shay) in Arizona, theancestral home of the Navajo. KitCarson ran the Navajo out of thecanyon in 1863 at the behest of the U.S.Government.

In 1931, a highly unusual treaty wassigned with the federal governmentdeclaring the canyon a nationalmonument but under the control of theNavajo nation. They came home.

You must see Canyon de Chellybefore you die. It is holy ground!Anyone who has ever been there hasfelt it. You feel you must whisper. Thetowering red, sandstone cliffs rise 1,000feet straight up from the meanderingriver on the valley floor. Lush greenfoliage brightens the landscape.

Jeep tours, run by the tribe, areavailable from the mouth of the canyonbut now there is one access trail from

the south rim to the floor near theWhite House, a structure so old that noone is certain when it was firstestablished.

I was fascinated by the Southwestskies. The cumulous and cirrus cloudssweep over head in full threedimensions.

I did very little actual painting andspent most of my time looking andphotographing. I gathered enoughmaterial to last a lifetime. I take bookson tape, usually a couple of serioustomes and some lighter stuff for relief. This time, I had the fifty volume Historyof the United States and the HarvardAstronomy Course plus some lightermysteries.

Pack your watercolor supplies inyour car, go to the bottom of yourdriveway and turn left. See where youend up. One time, I headed east until Iran out of land. Called Carol from St.John, New Brunswick.

Book ReviewPainting Successful Watercolours from Photographs

By Geoff KerseyThis just-published text is a wonderful primer full of helpful suggestions andmagnificent paintings. I particularly like his editing process. (What to leave out;adding color to bland areas.) “Dampen the area of your paper before applying masking fluid to avoid raised edges.” Yes, this will leave a soft edge on the object but you can always crisp it. (I do not usemasking fluid.)My only disappointment is that he does not address distortion caused by the curvedcamera lens. Often, you can spot a painting that uses a photo as its source. The curvedsides of buildings and vertical objects, especially near the edges is a dead giveaway.Grab a ruler and straighten them in your drawing. Kersey features exercises painting the same scene in imagined seasons. The photo maybe lush summer but he will paint it in snow. Great practice. The man can paint!

As you can see by the barcode in the scanned image, I borrowed the book fromthe King County Library. I intend to purchase my own copy. Enjoy!

Former NWWS president, Phil Flash passed away April 4, 2015 at age96. Phil’s great vitality and enthusiasm for living touched many people. Hefilled his life with art and joy and was devoted to his family and legions offriends and admirers. I’ve known Phil for over 40 years and attended hislegendary birthday parties into his 90’s. At 89 he had a big one-man showand sold many paintings.

Phil grew up in Seattle and studied Architecture and Industrial Designat the University of Washington. He worked for over 45 years at Boeing as adesign and ergonomic engineer. In 1956-57 he served as president ofNWWS and continuously supported the society until his death. Hecontributed research used by David F. Martin in writing our history, AFluid Tradition: Northwest Watercolor Society…The First 75 Years. See apicture of young Phil Flash and George Tsutakawa on page 35 in the book.

Phil was passionate about art, both as painter and sculptor and avidart collector. The walls of his home were covered with a literal “Who’s Whoin Northwest Art” from the 1950’s to the present. His extensive collection ofNorth Coast Indian Art was stunningly displayed in his contemporaryhome on Mercer Island.

Phil witnessed nearly a century of history. He offered a perfectexample of how to live life: Keep busy, eat healthy food, exercise, staypositive and never sweat the small stuff. His mantra was, “be a goodperson” and that simple philosophy won him countless friends over allthose years.

Phil…we’ll miss you.

Eric Wiegardt AWS DF, NWS has taught over 5,000 watercolorists workshops. Over 4,000

original paintings have been collected privately and corporately. He is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society (Dolphin Fellow), National Watercolor Society, Transparent watercolor Society of America (Master Status) and others. He has been awarded the 2012 AWS Gold Medal of Honor, among many other national and international awards. His paintings have been exhibited in many US museums, including China. He exhibited in the 2012 Invitational Exhibition of Contemporary International Watermedia Masters in Nanchang, China. Eric has been a juror for many national

watercolor shows, and was a 2014 AWS Awards Juror. Eric has been featured in many publications as well as cover artist for both Magazine and Watercolor Artist Magazine. He is the author of the book

raduate of the American Academy of Art, Chicago. This is a workshop for those who wish to loosen up in watercolor. Painting techniques and a philosophy of design will encourage bold, loose paintings. Eric believes most painting problems are the violation of an elementary painting principle. Lectures will be easily understood and helpful. It is recommended that the student have minimal previous experience. There will be ample time for students to try the concepts presented in a safe environment. Eric will do a completed painting demonstration daily. Subject matter may include land, marine, and streetscapes, florals and interiors.

A lifeless shadow is also causedsimply by improper paintingconstruction. This is unique towatercolor painting. If one tones theirlight pattern too far down the valuerange, it forces the contrasting midtones darker than they should be, thenthe darks will have to be in the blackrange for the additional contrast.

I think it is easiest to leave the lightpattern the white of the paper, whichallows my mid tones to be lighter, andthen the darks can be fairly light andutilize the full range of the color wheel. At the end of the painting I will thentone the white of the paper if need be.This is opposite to conventionalwatercolor procedure, but it makessense to me and does keep my darks fullof lively color.

I feel that color in the shadows doesnot have to represent realistic color.Simply bouncing in color fromadjoining planes and shapes issufficient or interpretive color can beeffective. The important point here is tokeep away from the dull, lifeless, photographic black.

PAINTINGS I HAVE JUDGEDPART II-COLOR

In the last article, I mentioned thereare several weaknesses I have seen inthe national and international shows.Even though many of the paintings areastounding in technique, there are stillsome weaknesses that should beaddressed. I discussed the need formore edge variation. Here I would liketo discuss color interpretation.

Lifeless shadows, or shadows withno color in them can steal the feeling ofnatural sunlight. They suck the life andlight out of our paintings. There is noappearance of reflected light, which isessential to the feel of a natural light. The Impressionists brought this to ourattention by lightening the valueswithin the shadow patterns which in

turn allowed them to introduce morecolor. In those same shadows, theirpaintings consequently exploded withcolor and a sense of realism unseenbefore.

And yet, it seems as though thewatercolor world is falling back intodead shadow interpretations. What ishappening? I think there are twoculprits: the photo reference and anerror in painting approach.

With the advent of the camera, avery useful tool for painting has beenappreciated by most artists. The photohas helped tremendously with the easeof constructing a painting, butunfortunately has not aided in thedevelopment of great art. One of itsflaws is the lack of color in the shadows.A photo taken in the sunlitMediterraneanmarina has thesame blacklifeless shadowsas one ofsimilar subjectin the overcastPacificNorthwest.Logically, thiscannot be so, asthe lightingconditions aretotally different.Obviously, whatis happeninghere is that thecamera with itslimitationscannot detect the color in a shadoweffectively enough for painting. If wepaint the lifeless gray shadow the way itlooks in the photo, then there will be noeffective sense of reflected light; thepainted shadow will look more like adark cave sucking light out of theenvironment.

For those who like to paint plein air, shadows will appear darker from theconstricting of the pupils. Our eyes aredoing the same as the camera: thepupils close down much like thecamera’s aperture. I suggest the artisttake a moment and walk into theshadow. There the eyes will dilate andthe color will be seen.
