Congratulations

Celebrating 25 Years
In the Priesthood!
You are a blessing to us!

The Pastor’s Pen Dear Parish Family,
I would like to express my congratulations to Fr. George Asigre as he observes his 25th anniversary of priestly ordination at the Saturday evening Mass this weekend. He has already proven to be a true blessing to us, particularly in his carrying ministry to the sick and homebound. Please join me in offering him our prayers and congrat-ulations! Also, mark you calendars now as we will celebrate Sr. Maureen Kelly Day on Sunday, Sept. 18 in thanksgiving for Sister’s many years of ministry here at St. John’s as she “retires” (yet will continue ministering as a volunteer). After the 10:45 AM Mass of Thanksgiving that day, plan to join us for a Parish Potluck Picnic in her honor and we celebrate as a community.
Last weekend I mentioned in my homily how our Pastoral Team and Pastoral Council have been spending time prayerfully reflecting on the future vision of our parish. One critical aspect of that has been examining our mission statement. We asked ourselves a simple question: Why are we here - what is our PURPOSE? After much pray-er and discussion a new PURPOSE STATEMENT was approved by the Pastoral Council:
To form disciples of Jesus Christ who joyfully live out the Gospel
It is simple, concise, and easily committed to memory. It is very much connected to the very mission that Jesus gave his disciples when we told them to go out and make (more) disci-ples! This is how the Church is still here over 2000 years later! It is with this statement that we make a commitment to growth as well as health in our parish.
We must remember, in the reflections of Rick Warren in his book The Purpose Driven Church, that the Church is here to build up people, not people the Church. Realistically, if we are doing it right and allowing God to work through us, the Church will build up people who will build up the Church who will build up more people who will build up the Church … You get the idea! I invite you to embrace and enact this purpose for our parish and to ignite a fire in your own life spiritually and let it spread generously into our community. As we prepare to build a new building - a Parish Activity Center - in the coming year, let us be firm in our resolve to build up something immensely more important: people who build up the Church who build up people who build up the Church who build up people … !!!

Welcome to St. John’s!
If you are visiting with us today, or perhaps
have been away for awhile, we invite you
to become an active part of our parish
community. Please fill out a registration
form, available at the welcome desk on
weekends or at the Parish Office, and for-
mally enroll as a parishioner. Parish regis-
tration is necessary when requesting eligi-
bility forms to serve as sponsors at Bap-
tisms and Confirmations. Young adults, liv-
ing independently, should register in their
own names. Please do not hesitate to
contact us if we can help in any way. If
you are not Roman Catholic, know that
you are most welcome. While we are una-
ble to extend a general invitation to re-
ceive Holy Communion, please feel free
to come forward at Communion time,
and cross your arms over your chest as the
minister will say a brief prayer as you make
your “spiritual communion.” View the full Parish Calendar online at www.stjohnsp.org

you regularly attend. This only takes 15 minutes of your time as
often as you are willing. For more info, contact Stacy Golden at

Child Care Co-op during Mass for children ages 1-4, please
contact Stacy Golden at [email protected] or Jennifer

Community Life team? We’re doing some exciting
things to welcome parishioners, plan community
building events and promote fellowship. Contact
Stacy Golden at [email protected].

able to offer their expertise as Collection Counters. We have

Adult Faith Formation www.stjohnsp.org/adult-faith
Office Hours: 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday - Thursday
Do you think you could be a better husband? A better father?
A better leader? This year of That Man Is You will focus on
“man in his relationship to his spouse.” Heavily influenced by
the thoughts of Pope John Paul II, A Light to the Nations takes
men on a journey into an important spiritual reality: “The family
has been placed at the heart of the great struggle between
good and evil, between life and death and between love and
all that is opposed to love.” Please join us on Saturdays this fall,
beginning Sept. 10 from 6:45 - 8:30 AM. To register or for more
information please email [email protected].
Are you Ready to Unlock the Mystery of the
Bible? This fall, we will offer an eight-part
study, Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible, to
make the complex simple. It will help you un-
cover the story woven throughout Scripture so
that you can get the “big picture” of the Bible and understand
what it is all about. The Bible is a story about the Father’s unfail-
ing love for you - a love that you are now called to share with
others. The study will be offered on Monday mornings and
Tuesday evenings, and is a great starting point if you have not
done bible study before. Go to www.stjohnsp.org/unlocking to
learn more and sign up. If you have concerns about signing-
up online, please call the Faith Formation office to register.
Reconciliation: Confessions are heard Saturdays 4-5 PM and First Fridays 9-9:30 AM and 7-7:30 PM (as well as special times during Advent and Lent) and by ap-pointment with a priest.
Baptisms: Parents who wish to have their children baptized should contact Jen Mayer, Coordinator of Adult Faith Formation, to begin the baptism prepara-tion process. Baptisms are celebrated at Mass and on Saturdays at noon. Please note that godparents must be at least 16 years old and confirmed, practicing Catholics. There must be at least one Catholic god-parent, but other baptized Christians may serve as Christian witnesses.
Marriage: Couples planning to marry must contact one of the priests or deacons at least 6 months prior to the tentative date of marriage. Participation in a marriage preparation program is required.
Ministry to the Sick: The Sacrament of Anointing should be administered at the beginning of a serious illness. Please notify the parish office when a parish-ioner is hospitalized. If you are unable to attend Mass and wish to receive Holy Communion, please contact the Parish Office.
Confirmation: Youth in 9th grade and above are eli-gible to prepare for the reception of the sacrament. Adults who have not been confirmed are invited to contact Jen Mayer, Coordinator of Adult Faith For-mation, to make arrangements for the sacrament.

Elementary School: St. John the Evangelist School provides education in the Roman Catholic tradition for children in grades Pre-K4 through 8. Visit www.stjohnsp.org or call the school office for more information regarding enrollment and registration in our nationally recognized Blue Ribbon School. Con-tact Dawn Sirinakis at [email protected].
Becoming Catholic / Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA): Prepares adults to join the Catholic Church (who may not be baptized or were baptized in another denomination) as well as to prepare those baptized as Catholics but who have never received First Communion or Confirmation. Groups form at various times throughout the year. For information, contact Jen Mayer, Coordinator of Adult Faith For-mation.
Eucharistic Adoration: The Blessed Sacrament is exposed the first Friday of each month (and each Friday during Advent and Lent) following the 8:30 AM Mass until 7 PM.

WWP registration is open
for next year! Would you
like to grow in faith and
build friendships with wom-
en who share your values and concerns?
Please join us at Walking with Purpose (a
women’s bible study) this fall! Sessions are
held on Thursday mornings and Thursday
evenings. Childcare is provided for ages 1
– 5 (during the AM session only). For more
information and to register, please visit
www.stjohnsp.org/wwp.
Hosts, Leaders, Geeks Needed! In the
coming year, some of the Adult Faith offer-
ings are slated to be held offsite in parish-
ioners’ homes. This will allow us to expand
the selections of programs offered and will
build a greater sense of community. In or-
der to make this happen, the Adult Faith
Committee is looking for folks willing to
serve as host (which would require you to
open your home weekly to a small group
for the duration of the program), leaders
(folks who would guide the discussion, fol-
low up with missing members, handle re-
sources), and geeks/technology helpers
(who can help the host connect comput-
er to TV in order to stream the videos so
those attending can view it comfortably).
If you are interested in serving in one of
these roles, please contact Jen Mayer at
410-647-4892.
RCIA/Becoming Catholic runs in multiple
tracks (comprehensive and targeted),
and is always looking for people who are
interested in becoming Catholic. Please
contact Jen Mayer at 410-647-4892 to
learn more about the RCIA/Becoming
Catholic process and learn which track
would be best for you.
Men’s Aquinas Group Men, come join us
on Saturday mornings in the Parish Center
from 7 - 8:15 AM as we reflect on the Sum-
ma Theologica of St. Thomas Aqui-
nas. Remember that "a man has free
choice to the extent that he is rational."
We will be concluding our reflections on
the Sacrament of Matrimony, as found in
the Supplement of the third part of the
Summa. For more information contact Bob
at 410-757-9395 or Bill at 410-518-9977 or

program required of all youth 14-17 years of
age who will be working with children. The next
training will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 6 from
6:30 - 7:45 PM. This includes youth working in the Religious Educa-
t ion programs, scouts , sacr i s tans , choi r , etc.

Religious Education Registration Classes begin in 3
weeks. Some classes are filled to capacity. Have
you registered your children yet? Students are ac-
cepted to particular class sessions on a “first come
– first served” basis. Students attending public or
private schools, from age 4 through grade 8 are
most welcome. New families and those who have been away for
a period of time should enroll in person. Return your form to the
office or register and pay tuition online. A full or partial payment
must accompany the registration in order to ensure placement.

647-4892 or [email protected].
Special Needs Religious Ed A class is forming for chil-
dren in the 6-8 age range. We also have a class for
children in the 11–13 range. These ages are approxi-
mate. Children and young people who have spe-
cial needs or challenges have the right, like others
their age, to know the “mystery of faith” and their
loving God. Persons with special needs bring a wonderful dimen-
sion and unique gifts to the life of a parish. Please contact John
at 410-647-4892 or [email protected] to discuss how we can
meet your child’s needs.
Elementary & Middle School Religious Edu-
cation. Will your child have a catechist?
Don’t skip over this announcement. We are
about 10 catechists short in the Sunday and
Wednesday programs. We are in need of
catechists and leaders in Edge, Life Teen
and Confirmation also. Don’t look to
“someone else” to volunteer. YOU are that
“someone else”. We are waiting for your
call. If interested in PreK-4 thru Grade 8, please contact John at
410 647-4892 or [email protected].

What is EDGE? Edge is a Catholic
middle school youth ministry pro-
gram. It provides a safe fun
place for youth to find a solid
Catholic community, to get an-
swers to their questions about
faith, and most importantly, to experience Jesus in a profound
and personal way. Why is Edge Important? At this age, teens
tend to shift socially and begin to experience tremendous
changes emotionally and intellectually. As they wade through
all the difficulties of this time of life, they have real questions. The
sessions that are provided during an Edge night and the experi-
ence they share in their small groups provide them with real an-
swers. How Does Edge Work? Edge is set up to model the flow of
the Mass: Gather-everyone is called together in prayer and
them some form of fun game or skit that relates to the topic of
the night. Proclaim- The topic, based on a yearly theme, is pre-
sented by a guest speaker. The Break- the students are assigned
to a small group based on grade and gender. Questions relat-
ing to the topic are asked by the Core Team member for discus-
sion. Send- ends with prayer of devotion and a challenge to
take home for building faith. How Can You Help? By becoming
an Edge Core Team member, you can help by fostering a sup-
portive relationship with the youth in your small group. For more
information, please contact Jeanette Cohn at 443-261-0108

Volunteers Needed Is God calling you to share the Gospel with
teenagers? Then you’re in luck - we have amazing opportunities in
our High School youth ministry programs. Whether you are young
or old, we can use you to intentionally disciple the youth of our
parish. We’re looking for people to help teach confirmation clas-

On occasion, people come to St. John’s
in crisis. They are desperate and don’t
know where else to turn. Such a thing
happened last Sunday. A man came
into the Gathering Space as Mass was
letting out. He approached the recep-
tionist in tears needing food for his family.
His disability payment did not stretch far
enough after he’d paid his rent. His was
a familiar face too – we’d helped him
before. We also recognized that he
made a habit of coming for help during
non-office hours and we asked ourselves,
“What would Jesus do?” Two of our SVDP
members loaded four bags of food into
his van. That’s what Jesus would have
done! Thank you for allowing SVDP to
continue our work.
Poor Box: Jesus will multiply your gifts to
the poor in this life, but more importantly,
in the next. Please be as generous as
you can. There is so much to do!
Pantry BOGOGO! Buy one, get one, give
one. We especially need boxed pota-
toes, peanut butter and jelly, and rice/
pasta side dishes.
Clothing, in good condition, is accepted
in the receptacle located in the church
parking lot. All clothes are distributed in
Baltimore.
For more information about our outreach
programs, visit www.stjohnsp.org/svdp or
call 410-647-4884 ext. 3.
Thank you

released? There are many ways to be of assistance. If in-
terested, please contact Bill Cornelius at 410-518-9977
