Dear Parish Family,
What an unusual year in that Advent didn’t begin on the weekend after the celebration of Thanksgiving! While we will still have four Sundays of Advent, the final “week” will only last hours, as it will share Dec. 24 with Christmas Eve. So, we only really have three full weeks of Wonderful Wandering, as our Preaching Se‐ries is entitled. Inspired by the image of Joseph accompanying Mary towards Bethlehem, we also find ourselves wandering, sometimes even aimlessly, through life. We don’t always know where we are heading and whether we are moving in the right direction. And that’s okay.
These four weekends Fr. Michael and I will be reflecting on some of the dispositions we may need to embrace as we wander through life. Hope‐fully we are in search of a sense of direction inspired by God, as well as those wonderful experiences that we have along the way that are surely encounters with God. For God continues to break into our world just as he did so many years ago when Jesus walked among us.
Firstly, and our focus this weekend, is that we must prepare. God wants to break into our world and often that happens through, and even sometimes, despite us. One never knows the impact they can make in the life of another. We make our checklist to prepare for the social dimensions of Christmas: shopping, planning, decorating, clean‐ing up, making sure everything is just right. I challenge you to include in your preparing, finding ways to reach out and make a difference to those who are struggling at this time of year: those who have lost loved ones, those who are alone, those who are homeless or hungry or simply struggling to make ends meet. I offer you two concrete efforts you can consider.
First is our Advent Giving Tree project, coordinated by our St. Vincent de Paul Society. After Mass this weekend and next, you can take a tag from a tree in the Gathering Space, go to the table and purchase the gift cards that will be presented to needy families. We hope to help around 90 families with 200 children this season! You may also donate online at www.stjohnsp.org/svdp.
Second, we will again be hosting Winter Relief at St. John’s from Dec. 26 through Jan. 2. We will host around 40 homeless people, provide hot meals, a warm place to sleep, and companionship. In partnership with Arundel House of Hope, Winter Relief provides a respite from the cold weather for individuals all season long. You may donate through the Poor Box this weekend or go to www.stjohnsp.org/winterrelief. Also, volunteers will be in the Gathering Space with information as to how you can help by preparing and serving meals, donating needed materials, providing entertainment and conversation, or staying over‐night to ensure everything runs smoothly.
Don’t forget your spiritual preparation, both individually and as a fami‐ly. Stop by the Advent Fair (Sunday, 8 AM ‐ 1 PM) in the auditorium. Also, note the additional opportunities for confession, particularly the Family Reconciliation Services this Tuesday at 7:15 PM and Wednes‐day at 5 PM, as we celebrate the Lord’s mercy. A blessed Advent to all!

If you are visiting with us today, or have been away for awhile, we invite you to become an active part of our parish community. Please fill out a registra-tion form, available at the welcome desk on week-
ends or at the Parish Office, and formally enroll as a parishioner. Parish registration is necessary when requesting eligibility forms to serve as sponsors at Baptisms and Confirmations. Young adults, living independently, should register in their own names. Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can help
in any way. If you are not Roman Catholic, know that you are most welcome. While we are unable to extend a general invitation to receive Holy Com-munion, feel free to come forward at Communion time, and cross your arms over your chest as the
minister will say a brief prayer as you make your “spiritual communion.”

The Feast of Our Lady of Gua-
dalupe, the Patroness of the Americas is Tuesday, Dec. 12! On this day in 1531 the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to the humble Mexican layman Juan Diego, and her miracu-
lous appearance resulted in the baptism of over 8 million indigenous people. Her words to Juan are also words to us, “Listen.
Put into your heart, my smallest and dear-
est son, the things that frightened you, the
things that afflicted you are nothing; do
not let them disturb you…am I not here, I,
who am your mother? Are you not under
my shadow and protection?” Mary persis-tently calls us to awaken our faith, and in-vites us to follow Jesus. All men and wom-
en are invited to join us in honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe by spending an hour with our Eucharistic Lord from 7-8 PM so He can give us with the grace we need to live in joy, peace, and trust! Questions? Call Susan at 410-647-9158.

10 AM-12 Noon; 2-4 PM Friday 10 AM-12 Noon
Saturday by appointment only
Location: Parish Center • 443-261-0109 www.stjohnsp.org/svdp
We are asking for your help to share the Spirit of the approaching Christmas Sea-son with 80 of our less fortunate neigh-
bors and their 220 children. The Giving Tree is up in the Gathering Space. Please select a child in need so they will have a gift on Christmas morning. The tags have a recommended amount on them, but anything you can do to help will be ap-
preciated. We are also providing each family with a basket of food for their Christmas meal and an ornament de-picting the events surrounding Our Lord’s birth. In last week’s gospel, Jesus, uses the analogy of what we do for others,
we also do for him. We must consider how we will answer that question at our judgement. Volunteers will be available after all of the Masses both this weekend and next. You can donate using cash, a check, a credit card, or you can give a
onetime online gift. Because Christmas falls on a Monday, we only have two weekends to prepare for our children and their families, our homebound pa-rishioners, and our sister parish, St. Peter Claver.
Poor Box We have heard Jesus say: “…whatever you did for one of the least brothers and sisters of mine, you did for
me.” Remember, when you share the gifts God has given you with your neigh-bors in need, you are also sharing with Jesus.
Pantry to support our regular weekly food distribution, we especially need peanut butter.
Thank you for your prayers and support
as we continue our mission. For more in-formation about our outreach programs, call the Parish Office at 410-647-4884 ext. 3 or visit www.stjohnsp.org/svdp.

Christmas Sweater Dance The Knights of Columbus present the 1st annual Christmas Sweater Dance on Saturday, Dec. 16 from 7 – 11 PM at the Columbian Center (335 Ritchie Hwy., Severna Park). Don your favorite Christmas sweater and come out for a festive evening of music and celebra-tion. Activities include a DJ, dancing, cash bar, appetizers, snacks, prizes, silent auctions, and pictures with Santa. In addition to wearing a holiday sweater, please bring one to donate to those in need. Tickets are $10 per person or
$15 per couple; must be 18 years or older to attend. To purchase tickets, please contact Larry at 443-454-3060, Benjamin at 410-251-5062, or Shane at 443-452-7322. Hope to see you there.
Worldwide Marriage Encounter “Yet, O LORD, you are our father; we are the clay and you the potter: we are all the work of your hands.” As we begin the waiting of advent, let us strive to become the work of his hands by enjoying a Worldwide Marriage Encounter weekend with our spouse. The next weekends are Apr. 20-22 and Nov. 2-4 in Gaithersburg and Aug. 3-5 in Hanover. Go to welovemat-rimony.org to sign-up or call 301-541-7007. It’s not too early to sign-up!
Retired Religious Fund Help Care for Elders “Thanks to support from the Retire-ment fund for Religious, we are now in a much better posi-tion to care for our elders,” writes a religious sister. Your do-nation helps her religious community and hundreds of oth-ers provide for aging members and plan for long-term needs. Please give to next week’s Retirement fund for Reli-
gious collection.
Inclement Weather Policy We will follow the direction of Anne Arundel County Public Schools to the follow-ing extent: If schools are delayed 8:30 AM Mass will be celebrat-ed. If schools are closed there will be no 8:30 AM Mass. A decision regarding evening meetings and activities will be made no later than 5 PM. If schools dismiss early due to weather all evening ac-tivities are cancelled. For any weather delays, please check the website, as well as the parish and school Facebook pages, and
email for updates. On weekends any alterations to the weekend Mass schedule will be announced as above. However, please exercise due discretion in making the decision to travel in hazardous weather/driving conditions. We want you to be safe and able to worship with us the
following week!
