5 th Grade News Week of September 4, 2017 MATH 5A- This week, the class will focus on powers of 10 and learn some shortcuts to multiplying by 10, 100, and 1,ooo. There will be no quiz this Friday due the shorter week of school. 5B – The students will work on comparing decimals this week. We will continue to work on decimal place value. No quiz this week! There are no birthdays in the month of September LANGUAGE ARTS *The 5 th graders will continue working with the story, A Royal Mystery. We will focus on the theme of the play as well as characterization. *On Friday, the students will have their first reading test. Please practice the story’s vocabulary words on our Quizlet page or use the vocabulary sheet and flashcards we made in class. These should be in your child’s expandable! *A vocabulary crossword puzzle will be coming home Thursday as homework. Hopefully, this will help learning the vocabulary words. *We will be creating gratitude cards for our local heroes! On Monday, our school will have a gratitude drive through honoring our local heroes! *We will also be completing our projects we will display for Open House next week! We can’t wait for you to see them! RELIGION This week we will continue working on chapter 2: The Seven Sacraments. Students will have a quiz next week on Thursday, September 14. SCIENCE The students have been hard at work learning about properties of matter. They even had their first science lab last week investigating different objects and their properties. This week, they will have their first STEM project in 5 th grade. I can’t wait to see all of their brilliant ideas! SOCIAL STUDIES This week we will finalize section one, “The Earliest Americans.” Students will have a Quiz on Friday. Please see your child’s study guide and help your child study on Quizlet his/her vocabulary words for this section. 6th Grade News Week of September 4, 2017

MATH 6A- This week, the class will focus on dividing decimals by whole numbers and decimals. There will be no quiz this Friday, due to the shorter week of school.

6B- This week, the class will focus on multiplying whole numbers and decimals. There will be no quiz due to the shorter week of school.

SOCIAL STUDIES This week we will finalize lesson one, The Distant Past. Students will watch a movie called “A Matter of Faith,” in which a Christian student, wrestles with her beliefs about human evolution while taking a Biology class in college. There will be a vocabulary quiz on Friday.

LANGUAGE ARTS

*Due to mass on Wednesday, we

will not have class!

*The 6th graders will be

choosing speech partners this

week and looking at the

different speeches! It is very

important the students practice

their speeches at home! They

will need to be memorized in

their entirety! We will work on

these in class, also!

*The students will continue

reading their novel, Tuck

Everlasting. We will focus on

the imagery and character traits

throughout the next few

chapters! Ask your child about

this novel!

RELIGION This week we will begin chapter 2 We Answer God’s Call. Students will realize the value of Christian sacrifice and to identify ways of making sacrifices for the good of others. Our next quiz on chapter 2 will be next week on Thursday, September 14.

SCIENCE Last week the class learned

about cells and the cell

theory. This week they will

learn more about STEM and

will have their first STEM

challenge. I am excited to see

all of their creativity and

teamwork come together!
