HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Reese- January 26 Meara- January 31 5 th Grade News Week of January 8, 2018 MATH 5A-The class will be kicking off the new year with a Mystery Picture Coordinate Grid project. They will be working on this project all week, so there will be no quiz on Friday. 5B We will begin learning about coordinates and plotting them on a plane! The students will complete a small project plotting the different coordinates. We will be taking the Diocesan test over coordinate planes on Friday. LANGUAGE ARTS *Happy 2018! The 5 th graders will talk about New Years resolutions and complete a foldable activity talking about their own resolutions! *The students will jump right back into our reading series with our first story of the year, Quest for the Tree Kangaroo. We will be learning about cause/effect relationships throughout this story. *The 5 th graders will learn about main, linking, and helping verbs as well as synonyms and antonyms. *On Friday, we will be having the spelling test to determine the 5/6 th grade representative for the spelling bee! Please encourage your child to participate! The winner will represent our school at the IKAN Spelling Bee in February! RELIGION This week, we will begin Ch. 7 Grace: A Gift of Strength and Support. This chapter will help the students realize that we receive special graces in Baptism and Confirmation that helps us follow Jesus. They will learn about the concepts of conversion, and learn about the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the Fruits of the Holy Spirit. Quiz on Tuesday, January 16. SCIENCE The new year begins with a unit on Earth’s atmosphere. This week, the class will be learning about the layers of the atmosphere and how each plays a role in supporting life. The information students learn this week will be used to begin a Power Point project coming soon! SOCIAL STUDIES Welcome Back! This week, we will begin Ch. 3 The English Colonies. We will focus on the Southern Colonies first. We will learn about Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement. We will learn about the reasons for founding the southern colonies including Maryland, the Carolinas, and Georgia. Quiz on Tuesday, January 16. 6th Grade News Week of January 8, 2018

MATH 6A- The new year begins with a brief review of combining like terms. There will be a short quiz this week and then students will begin solving equations.

6B- The new year begins with a new math unit: Expressions. This week we will focus on exponents, orders or operations, and evaluating expressions. We will have a quiz on Wednesday, January 17.

SOCIAL STUDIES Welcome Back! This week, we will learn about the Old Kingdom in Egypt. Students will explain the ancient Egypt’s political structure and they will describe the earliest uses of Egyptian writing. There will be a quiz this Friday.

LANGUAGE ARTS

*Happy 2018! The 6th graders will be presenting mass on Wednesday, so we will be practicing during our class time on Monday afternoon!

*The students will be introduced to a new set of vocabulary words for our novel. The test will be next week. Please use Quizlet to practice these words!

*We will be learning about demonstrative and relative pronouns this week and using them in our writing. *On Friday, we will be having the spelling test to determine the 5/6th grade representative for the spelling bee! Please encourage your child to participate! The winner will represent our school at the IKAN Spelling Bee in February!

RELIGION Campus Ministry Retreat on Tuesday, January 9 (Wear your T-Campus Ministry T-shirt) This week, we will begin Ch. 7 Commandment and Fulfillment. This chapter presents the Ten Commandments as more than rules or laws. They are signs of God’s covenant. Quiz on Tuesday, January 16.

SCIENCE The new year begins with an Earth Science unit on physical and chemical weathering. Students will be learning about the different forces that shape and change our planet. Science Lab on Friday will give them some hands-on simulations of these forces at work.
