Randy C. Sellers, 55, passed away peacefully in his home, April 4, 2012. He was born to Billy C. Sellers and Julia B. Hurt-Sellers, July 3, 1956 in Dumas, Texas. Randy lived most of his life in Arizona, graduating from Ray High School in Kearny. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a

helicopter mechanic. After the service he worked for the Ray mines and the last 16 years, he worked for Robert Christ & Co. RV as a parts specialist. Randy leaves behind two children, Brandy of Mesa and Aaron of Tempe; four grandchildren, Taya, Mason, Milo and Adeson; two adopted children,

Joe W. Torrez, 72, of Winkelman, passed away on Sunday, April 15, 2012 at Banner Heart Hospital, Mesa. Joe was born the son of Guillermo and Guadalupe (Gutierrez) Torrez on March 2, 1940 in Hayden. Joe went to work for the school system of Hayden-Winkelman, retiring after 46 years of service. Joe married Rebeca Rivera on February 22, 1976 in Hayden and they made their home in Winkelman. Joe enjoyed visiting with former students. He loved to dance and spend time with family and friends, especially his grandchildren. Joe was an active member of St. Joseph Parish and donated a lot of time at the Church.

Lydia Lopez Juarez, 80, passed away on Friday, April 20, 2012 at her home in Hayden with her family by her side. Lydia was born on August 26, 1931, the daughter of Faustino and Anita (Quintana) Lopez. She is survived by her children, John (Jessie) Ruiz, Thomas (Melanie) Renteria, Linda Gonzalez, Steve (Carol) Juarez and Denora (Sean) Buben. She was a lifelong resident of Hayden. Lydia’s greatest joys in life were her grandchildren. She leaves behind 14 grandchildren: John (Tanya) Ruiz Jr., James F. (Kristina) Ruiz, Thomas (Stephanie) Renteria Jr., Amber Dawn Renteria, Patrick Gonzales, Shadow Reynoso, Amanda Juarez, Steven Juarez Jr., Wedo (Yvonne) Gonzalez, Vanessa Ortega, Eric Gonzalez, Ashley Buben, Derek Buben, Erika Buben; and 19 great-grandchildren, who all fi lled her life with laughter and love. In addition to her children and grandchildren, Lydia is survived by her siblings, Rudolph (Carmen) Lopez, Alex (Molly) Lopez, Alfonso

According to state law, there are two methods by which police may arrest suspected offenders. The suspect may be physically taken into the department and booked into jail, or the arresting officer may write a citation and release the suspect to appear in court later. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Only criminal citations are listed. All damages are estimates.Apr. 9 Assault/domestic violence was investigated on the 100 block of Jamestown. In the same incident a juvenile female

was reported as a runaway.Apr. 11 Criminal damage was reported at the General Kearny Inn. A scooter was reported stolen from a residence on the 200 block of Hartford.Apr. 14 Following a report of a fight behind La Cantina, a possible assault was investigated.Apr. 14 High winds whipped up a trampoline from a yard on the 400 block of Jamestown. The trampoline landed on a fence with one side touching a power line above. APS was contacted and removed the hazard without disrupting power.

Apr. 16 Assault/domestic violence, criminal damage/domestic violence and disorderly conduct/domestic violence was investigated on the 400 block of Jamestown.Apr. 21 Criminal damage was reported at Church of the Good Shepherd. Other calls last week included 13 ambulance runs; one fire call; one extra patrol request; two suspicious person/vehicle/circumstance reports; one animal detail other than a dog bite; one citizen’s assist; two 911 hang-up reports; one civil standby; one agency assist; and

two information reports. Citations written included one for dog at large; one for a stop violation and one for speed. One verbal warning was issued for a stop sign violation. Other calls this week included 10 ambulance runs; one lost property report; two extra patrol requests; two animal details other than dog bite; one street or traffic equipment report; one welfare check; one citizens assist; two agency assists; two information reports; and two open door reports. A citation was written for failure to stop/school bus signal and verbal warnings included

Kearny Police Reportone for speed and two for stop sign violations. Two vehicles were also red-tagged for

residential parking violations (abandoned vehicle over 36 hours).


On April 8, mid-week of National Library Week, the Kearny Library held Open House. All week,

special events were held, with cookies and popcorn available for free to patrons. There was also

a sign up for a DVD for children and adults. The program started with Kim Buchanan, Librarian,

Open House held at the Kearny Librarywelcoming everyone and telling of all the additions to the library. Books are added on a regular basis and shelves are “weeded” of books which are not circulating. On Wednesday, parents and friends came together to hear a presentation by our local author, Joyce DiPastena. Janette Danilow, Librarian, started the program by also welcoming everyone with a simple science experiment. She then introduced Joyce DiPastena, who told how reading was always an important part of her life and the lives of her family. There was a particular book that, along with the feelings gained from her enjoyment of it, influenced her writings. She wanted to create the same feelings as she wrote. She was able

to locate this out of print book by author, and has read it numerous times. She encouraged adults and children, alike, to read and appreciate the books that are available to us at the Kearny Library. When not found in our library, they can be secured through interlibrary loan. A poster contest was held for grades Kindergarten through Fourth, using the theme “Dream Big”. Prizes were awarded for first, second and third places in each grade level. In order of first, second and third place, the winners for each grade were for Kindergarten: Ramon Montana, Gabriella Layvas and Malena Goad; First Grade: Paxton Hansen, Isabella Wernet and Andrew Hudson; Second Grade: Amariz Ochoa,

Emma Baker and Brian Morales; Third Grade: Derek Figueroa, Caden Hansen, Chastity Kelley; Fourth Grade: Savannah Ortiz, Erik Manriquez, Daniela Camarillo. All posters were given a gold seal in recognition of their efforts. The Friends of the Library conducted the contest and presentation of these awards were given by President, Gwen Dinwiddie and Treasurer, Wanda Lundy. The videos purchased by The Friends were, for the children, “Hop” won by Ashley Rudd and for the adults, “Warhorse” won by Megan Sewell. At the conclusion of the program, cookies, cake and lemonade were served. The cake was baked and decorated by Kim and enjoyed by all.

Among the 48 students honored were Ray High School graduates Paula Real, who is currently attending Arizona State University and Anne Palmer, a student at Arizona Christian University. Also receiving scholarships

were Jesse Zavala and Shayna Wickwire, both graduates of Superior High School. Jesse is attending ASU and Shayna’s educational status was unknown at press time. Ralph Varela, Chairman

By Nolberto Waddell The Hayden Lady Lobo softball team made a good stride toward a spot in the state softball tournament with two wins this past week defeating the Lady Vandals of Miami with a come-from-behind win and defeated the Lady Tigers of Globe with a 10-run rule shortened game. The Lady Lobos traveled to Miami High School on Tuesday, April 17, to face a team that for the past several seasons have held a hex over them when playing on the Vandal home field and for five innings it looked like the hex might continue. After going down in order in the top of the first inning, the Vandal team put three runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first taking advantage of three walks, a throwing error and a two RBI double. The Lady Lobos cut into the Vandal lead in the top of the second scoring two runs on a hit batter and two costly errors by the Vandal defense. The Vandals made the score 2 to 4 in the bottom of the third scoring on an error followed by two

wild pitches and finally scored on a groundout. In the top of the fourth, the Lady Lobos, after one out, loaded the bases with a double by Chiquete and two walks but the Lobos could not bring them around to score when two strikeouts ended the threat. The Vandals came alive in the bottom of the fourth scoring four runs on three hits and took advantage of three Lobo errors to take what seemed like a safe, 2 to 8, lead going into the fifth inning. The Lady Lobos started to fight back in the fifth inning scoring two runs on three hits and a throwing error to narrow the Vandal lead to 4 to 8. The Vandals went down in order in the fifth. The Lobo offense finally came alive in the top of the sixth inning taking advantage of three Vandal errors, a walk and a hit batter along with two timely hits by Boltarez and Chiquita to take a 10 to 8 lead at the end of six innings of play. The Vandals took advantage of a walk and an error to score a run in the bottom of the sixth to narrow the Lobo lead to 10 to 9.

The Lady Lobos continued to take advantage of the Vandals bad fielding in the seventh inning. After two quick outs on two pitches, Boltarez reached base with an infield hit, went to second when Alexis Felix was walked and both scored when Estrada’s hard grounder to second was mishandled. Estrada scored the third run of the inning on an error on Kyana Garcia’s grounder to the shortstop to give the Lobos a 13 to 9 lead going into the bottom of the seventh. The Vandals made it exciting in the seventh after two outs getting runners to third and second with two walks and a wild pitch but there is where they stayed as Boltarez buckled down and got the third out when the batter looked at the third strike. With a big sigh of relief, the Lady Lobos claimed a hard fought 13 to 9 win over the Vandals. Demitria Boltarez took the pitching win giving up the nine runs on only four hits but the seven errors hurt. She struck out 10 but walked eight Vandals and had three costly wild pitches.

Only three Lobos managed hits off the Vandal pitcher with Boltarez getting three singles and scored three runs in five at bats. Alexis Felix had a single in four at bats and Stephanie Chiquete was a homerun short of a cycle getting a single, a double and a triple for two RBI in five at bats. The Globe Lady Tigers were on the Lobo diamond for a game on Friday, April 20, not putting up much of a fight in the 10-run rule shortened game. The Tigers got to Lobo pitching starter Marlisse Perez in the top of the first for two runs on two hits, a throwing error and a run scoring double but it would be the only threat they would put up in the game. The Lobos came roaring back in the bottom of the first scoring nine runs on five hits, four walks and three fielding errors for a 9 to 2 lead. The Tigers never challenged again going scoreless the rest of the game as Perez and Boltarez, who came into the pitching circle in the top of the fourth, held the Tiger batters in check. The Lobos added four runs in the second on

back-to-back triples by Chiquete and Perez, an RBI single by Stephanie Encinas and an RBI double by Alexis Felix for a 13 to 2 lead after two innings of play. The Lobos added a single run in the bottom of the third on an inside-the-park homerun by Stephanie Chiquete for the final 14 to 2 score. Marlisse Perez got the pitching win going three innings giving up the two runs on three hits, struck out three and walked none. Demitria Boltarez pitched the final two innings holding the Tigers scoreless, striking out five of the seven batters she faced and walking one Tiger batter. Seven of the nine starters for the Lobos got a hit with Marlisse Perez going three for three with two singles and a triple for three RBI. Boltarez had two singles, scored two runs and had an RBI in four at bats. Alexis Felix had a single and a double, scored two runs and had two RBI in three trips to the plate. Stephanie Chiquete had the big blasts of the game getting a triple and an inside-the park homerun in four at bats.

Devon Estrada, Kyana Garcia and Stephanie Encinas each had a single in the game. Before the game, the Lobo coaches and team paid tribute to the four graduating senior Lady Lobos playing their last game on their home field. Wearing the Blue and White for the last time on the Lobo diamond were Mary Lechuga, Yvonnah Gonzales, Stephanie Chiquete and Demitria Boltarez along with Lobo managers Chantel Arbizo and Yusi Casado. Good luck to the young ladies in their final game in Lobo Blue and White when they take on the Lady Bearcats on the Ray field this Tuesday and good luck to the young ladies in their future plans following their graduation. The Lady Lobos will have played their final game of the schedule when this article appears taking on the Ray Lady Bearcats on the Bearcat field and following the last game will wait for the final power point standings hoping to qualify for the state softball tournament that is scheduled to start on May 2.

This wonderful event is guided by compassion and a desire to make this a better world for future generations.” Special guest during the dinner was Alejandro Chavez, grandson of the labor leader, and a community and political

activist in Phoenix. He has been involved with the Farm Worker Movement through out his life. Keynote speaker was Valencia del la Vega, Technical Program Manager in the Sort Test Technology Development group at Intel. She is also the President of the Intel Latino Network. The dinner was just a part of the events sponsored by the Cesar E. Chavez Memorial Committee of Pinal County to celebrate its commitment to the youth of Pinal County. To open the celebration, Eva’s Fine Mexican Food Restaurant hosted an event in February with a youth mariachi performance. Also held was an art display that captured Chavez’s passion and commitment to his culture at the Casa Grande Public Library that is running throughout the month of March, plus an art contest that invited Pinal County High School students to enter to showcase their artistic talent.

The Ray Junior High softball team will receive a fi rst round bye into the Central League Playoffs that begin quarterfi nal action today. The ladies carry a 7-1 record into the tournament and most likely will be the #2 seed. They would only earn the #1 seed if Eloy lost to the Miami team with a 1-6 this past Monday. The results of that contest were not known by the deadline for this article. With an Eloy win however, Ray and Eloy would have identical 7-1 records but Eloy will claim the #1 seed in the tourney by virtue of beating Ray earlier this season. As the #2 seed the Bearcats would play the Globe –Superior winner at 9 a.m. on Saturday in Eloy. As the #1 seed, the Bearcats would play the Hayden-Mt. Vista winner at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday in Eloy. The CJHL tournament games in Eloy will be played at the Santa Cruz High School complex. The Ray junior high girls

concluded their regular season last Wednesday by soundly beating a depleted San Carlos team 22-0. The Bearcats put the game out of reach in the fi rst inning by batting around and scoring 13 runs in the inning. Ray picked up another two runs in the second and seven more in the third. The game was so lopsided that Ray’s coach Rikki Galka was trying to have her team make outs to keep from adding to the score. The game ended after 3 ½ innings due to the 10-run rule. It’s probably safe to say every Bearcat scored and got a hit or walked in the contest. Savannah Willis and Stormee Galka both hit homeruns and Gabby Juvera and Nepeese Avechuco crushed doubles. The Bearcats received 10 walks and pounded out 14 hits in the contest. Ray pitchers, Stormee Galka, Dany West

and Gabby Juvera did great jobs by holding San Carlos scoreless. In boy’s action, the Bearcat baseball team will enter the CJHL tournament as the #6 seed and will play at #3 Globe this afternoon at 1:30 p.m. The game has been moved up to allow the teams to play on the Globe High School fi eld which is a much nicer facility. If the Bearcats win today they would advance to the CJHL Championship tournament in Eloy on Saturday and play #2 Miami at 9 a.m. The Bearcats were off last week as they received a forfeit win from San Carlos as the Braves dropped out of the league due to a lack of interest. The baseball team will enter the quarterfi nals with a 4-5 record on the year. Good luck to both our Bearcat teams in the CJHL tournament.

The Ray High School Softball banged out 30 hits in back to back games against the Superior Panthers last week, winning 14-4 on Tuesday in Kearny and earning a 9-3 victory on Friday in Superior. With the two wins the young Bearcats improve to 8-7 on the season with one game remaining before beginning state playoff action. Ray pitcher Annie Hinojos put together two outstanding games in the circle as she

struck out 15 Panthers over two games and more impressively issued only one walk. Head Coach Curt Cook continues to compliment Hinojos’s efforts. “Annie has made great strides this season for us, and is becoming more of a leader each day in practice. She continues to pound the strike zone and with the improvements our defense has made recently the results for the team has been

Sara N. Gillway and Kyle S. Smith were married March 6, 2012, at the Chapel of the Flowers in Las Vegas, Nevada. The bride is the daughter of Harry and Ann Gillway of Kimball, Nebraska. The groom is the son of Randy Smith of Fremont, Nebraska and Jason and Laurel Korman of Hooper, Nebraska. Sara is a 2004 Ray High School graduate. She is now the Head Photo Specialist at Walgreens in Fremont and runs her own photography studio on the side. Kyle is a Studio Engineer for KTIC Radio in West Point, Nebraska. The newlyweds reside in Hooper with their 18 month old son, Kaden.

By Betsy Quinn Volunteers from the community made the Winkelman Pancake Breakfast on the Old Bridge a pleasant way to spend the a Sunday Morning and start off Earth Day. More than 120 people attended. The Pancake Breakfast also offered menudo in addition to pancakes, sausage and scrambled eggs. The food was terrific, but the visiting was even better. Some groups stopped just for the breakfast and a short visit, while for others it was a trip down memory lane. Billy Smith, a 1987 graduate of Hayden High School now living with his family in San Tan, related all the memories the Bridge brought to mind as he looked over the Bridge to the Gila River flowing below. Smith says the Bridge remains the same, except it was paved with blacktop and open to traffic when he was growing up in Winkelman. Known then as ‘the shortcut,’ local residents and teens would use the bridge as an alternate to the Highway. The biggest change, said Smith, is how low the Gila River is now. Smith fondly recalls jumping off

the bridge into the river below for a swim. Smith related the Bridge was the gathering place on weekends and after school for many locals in those days. While pointing out a turtle below in the river flowing along the current, Smith says in those days kids would follow along the banks to the spot where the Gila and San Pedro rivers met downstream, making one wonder if the turtle was headed for the same spot, or if the rivers even met today with the waters so low. Smith also recalls cable carts that used to traverse to highway, which are now long gone. Another former resident had a trip down memory lane that goes even further back. Patrick Romero, now 84, currently lives in Kearny with his wife of 14 years, Nettie. Romero is quite spry for his age, and his eyes light up with fond memories of riding a burro over the bridge in the late 1930s. Romero says the locals in the 30s also enjoyed jumping from the bridge to river below and then racing against the current to a nearby cliff. Romero says in those days the Bridge was along the main roadway; there was no Highway 77, only the Railroad.

Residents take a trip down Memory Lane

Romero recalled how the old roadway wound through the mountains to the Christmas mining community. Romero says he remembers how dangerous the road was, with cars having to honk at sharp curves and allow only one car to pass along the narrow road. Romero related the story of two men visiting family in the Christmas community one year. Romero says the men came over to Kearny to socialize one evening,

but never returned to Christmas. After a few days of backtracking and searching, their car was found in a wash, both men had drowned after their car had plunged off the narrow roadway. One can still see remnants of the now mostly abandoned roadbed while driving along Highway 77 north of Winkelman. Also on hand was Tom Chesnut of Tucson. Chesnut provided lively music and singing.

Fine art patrons, friends and families filled the Little Gallery last Sunday during the opening reception of the ArtUs Exhibit. More than 60 works of art are on display in this eighth annual showing of ArtUs. The show will remain in the gallery until May 10 and can be seen Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., or by contacting Sam Hosler. Viewers at the ArtUs show were not disappointed and the artists who were in attendance so enjoyed showing off their works. ArtUs opening successful ...By Steve YurekPastor, Kearny SBC Ann Landers receives around 10,000 letters a month from people, mostly from people looking for guidance and/or direction with family or relational issues. A preponderance of letters come from people looking for PEACE but just can’t seem to find it. As I was preparing for this weeks message I went to Google to see just how many times the word PEACE was noted on the internet. Would you guess…1000 times….10,000 times….One million times…How about 916,000,000 times! Yes that is 916-million different references to PEACE. From Peace Gardens to Peace Corp…Woman for Peace…Jews for Peace…Musicals for Peace to Children for Peace. Nearly all these are based on human efforts to resolve conflict with others! The Good News is that if we want real honest to goodness PEACE we need to establish the Gospel of Christ as the foundation for real peace. This weekend we talked about – “The Three Dimensions of Peace”. Do you have Peace with God? This is the vertical dimension of Peace. Do you have Peace with Yourself? This takes place internally. Do you have Peace with others? This is how we extend Peace horizontally. The reality is that the Biblical concept of PEACE is not always the easiest to grasp and/or live. We need to first take a self evaluation and ask – “Are you a PEACE-BREAKER? Are you a PEACE-FAKER? Or are you a PEACE-MAKER? So what do I mean by a PEACE-BREAKER? These are people that go out of there way to

deliberately confront, challenge, disagree with everything. They are manipulative and self-seeking with only one goal – Divide and destroy. Divisive people cut away at the very life principles of the local church assembly. They staunch the move of God and will destroy revival. We need to look at these people and evaluate what there motive is…is it self or is it to build up the Kingdom of God? What is a PEACE-FAKER? The truth is we all (even I) have at one time or another assumed the Peace-Faker role. It is our natural temptation to guard against the everyday conflicts of life. These are people that prefer PEACE over TRUTH. They go out of there way to avoid conflict, confrontation and unrest. They settle on what I call a ‘counterfeit peace’. And finally there is the PEACE-MAKER! This is very different kind of person. They are prepared to tell the truth and trust God for the outcome. Peace-Makers put others’ well being above there own comfort level. Guess what motivates Peace-Makers? I can say it in one word – LOVE! No other motivation but real love for someone else. Matthew 5:9 says: “Blessed are the Peace-makers, for they shall be called sons of God”. Do you know why we will be called “sons of God”? Because when you are truly working for real PEACE you bear God’s likeness. You look like your Father in Heaven. So…what are you? We all need to examine our hearts on a regular basis. Are you a PEACE-BREAKER…a PEACE-FAKER…or a PEACE-MAKER? This Friday night at

Benson, a bee who has just graduated from college, is disillusioned at his lone career choice: making honey. This is the final part in a series about an artist whose life was shaped by her childhood in the Ray-Kearny area.By CJ McKinney In November 2008, Tucson’s Kore Press published a book that would have a profound effect on Simpson’s work. Powder: Writing by Women in the Ranks, from Vietnam to Iraq is a collection of essays, poems and fiction by women serving in various branches of the military. Edited by Lisa Bowden and Shannon Cain, the writings in Powder chronicle the sometimes blackly humorous and often brutal experiences of women soldiers in combat. When Simpson met co-editor Cain, both saw the potential for bringing the voices of Powder to other audiences. “As soon as we met, we knew we wanted to work together,” says Cain. The result of their collaboration: Coming in Hot, a new one-woman performance that brought the words of Powder to life onstage. Billed as “a controversial new play,” Coming in Hot, adapted from the book by Cain, Lisa Bowden and Simpson herself, premiered in Tucson in September, 2009 and ignited immediate controversy – much of it coming, ironically, from the peace community. Coming in Hot, like Simpson’s other performance pieces, showcased unsung women in extraordinary circumstances and reflected her interest in women’s experiences as a key factor in peace and

social change. But it also presented those experiences with unflinching truth, which seemed to some to glorify American militarism and undermine the very principles held by the peace movement. Not only that, some critics took issue with Simpson’s portrayal of 14 different characters of varied ethnic backgrounds in the show. But Simpson remained unswayed, and Coming in Hot rolled on to glowing reviews, receiving endorsements by representatives of Amnesty International, the Women’s International League of Peace and Freedom, Gold Star Mothers for Peace, and others, who called it a “masterpiece.” Billed as “The Civil Discourse Tour,” Coming in Hot was performed in many venues in Tucson, including high schools, where, Simpson says, the show was “a very intense experience,” because of the students’ “wildly varied” perceptions of the military. After touring in several US cities, the show closed in 2010. True to the tour’s title, a central part of the play was the discussion period following the performance, which encouraged the audience to respond to the issues it raised. After wrapping up Coming in Hot, Simpson started work on a new piece, based on the life of another woman whose life is largely unknown to modern audiences: Mary Dyer, a wife and mother who became the first colonial woman to be

executed, hanged in Boston in 1660 for the crime of being a Quaker. Creating the character of Mary Dyer drew on Simpson’s old love of

researching historical figures and finding themes in their lives that resonate today. The resulting play, Mary’s Joy explores questions of women’s identity, dedication to convictions and non-violent resistance.

Mary’s Joy premiered in readings in February 2011, followed predictably by controversy. Members of audiences in venues ranging from Quaker meeting halls to small theaters accused Mary of selfishness, of committing a

sort of 17th-century “suicide by cop,” of abandoning her family for a vague set of principles. Simpson added those ideas to the play’s text, placing them in the mouths of characters such as Mary’s son. “You have to give the devil his due,” Simpson says. “You have to respect the truth.” And the truth of the story, in Simpson’s view, contains the message she wants the audience to hear. Although Simpson creates challenging work that invites dialogue and discussion – and sometimes harsh criticism – she’s uncompromising about her vision of both the story and the message. “She’s fierce, unabashed about using her art to change the world,” says Shannon Cain, and Simpson agrees. For her, the story comes first, the message second: “You have to engage people, draw them in, give them something real – then slip the message in.” But Simpson makes sure that, although the story trumps the message in her work, the message of peace is heard. Simpson’s brother, Scott, tells of a time when he arranged a performance of Coming In Hot at a community college in Seattle. On the night he attended, he was soundly disappointed. Although his sister was in costume, she simply stood onstage and read the text. But he learned that previous performances had been different: the discussions after the show were focused far more on the impact of Simpson’s performance than on the message of the play. So, the director had Simpson tone down her performance in order to keep the story front and center. “Her craft, her exquisite art, the sickeningly difficult craft which she has so completely mastered, lost

the fight inside my sister when offered as an alternative to the message of peace,” says Scott. (“That’s HIS version,” says Simpson.) But Scott Simpson isn’t the only family member to be touched by Simpson’s dedication to her “exquisite art” and changed by her artivism. Having a son in military service during wartime may have had the most direct impact on her trajectory toward peace work, but the path of Simpson’s commitment to peace has been shaped by other members of her family as well. Married four times, Simpson is the mother of three and the grandmother of one. Photographs of her loved ones dot Simpson’s website: sons Domenic and Donald Paul Stockton, daughter Emily Harbaugh, and Domenic’s son Casey Joel, along with running updates on their lives. Although Simpson admits, “it was never easy being my child,” daughter Emily says growing up with a mother in theater introduced the children to “ a lot of magical times,”

says Emily. “She was a magical mother.” Simpson’s children embrace their mother’s activism; eldest son Domenic worked on the crew of her off-Broadway Culture Project performances of A Single Woman, and second son Donald Paul, who remains connected to the military as a Naval reservist, wrote an endorsement of her activism for the launch of her show Coming in Hot. “My mother is a pacifist and a peace activist,” he writes, “and I wouldn’t have it any other way.” These days, Simpson continues to present Mary’s Joy in readings, while hoping to create a true video version of the play for a wider distribution than touring allows. After a stint in Colorado as co-founder of a second activist theater, she’s back in Tucson, where A Single Woman closed and Coming in Hot had its premiere. For the girl from Ray, Arizona, the twin paths of art and activism have become one, aimed at making change in the world – one story at a time.
