Manuel and Esther Trujillo in Ray, Arizona. His hobbies were hunting, fishing and quad riding. He worked at Kennecott and ASARCO

Gary Crawford, 62, passed away in the desert area near Winkelman on Jan. 17, 2013. His last places of residence were Winkelman and Tucson. His final arrangements were entrusted to At Season’s End Mortuary in Apache Junction.

Manuel J. Trujilloas a Maintenance Mechanic at the Smelter for 30 years. He also worked for the Pinal County Sheriffs office as a reserve officer. He was a die hard Arizona Diamondbacks fan. Mr. Trujillo loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. Manuel is survived by his loving wife, Rhonda, of 28 years. They were married on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1984 in Show Low, Arizona. He leaves behind children, Derrick (Stacey) York of Chandler, Erin (Greg) Zaragoza of Kearny, Meredith (the late Scott) Sayre of Gilbert, Brandon (Kendra) York of Ft. Bliss, Texas, Kristin (Rick)

York-Romero of Queen Creek and Kerri (Justin) Hune of Kearny; 24 grandchildren; and sister; Linda (Joe) Alday of Tucson.Manuel was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel and Esther Trujillo, and sisters, Sylvia Federico and Melba Sandoval. Services for Mr. Trujillo were held on Friday, March 22, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Kearny.

Edward (Ed) Charles John, of San Tan Valley, passed peacefully from this life to the next, on Saturday, March 16, 2013, due to complications of Alzheimer’s at the age of 78. Members of his loving family surrounded him in his final hours. He was born on June 1, 1934 in Aztec, NM, to Roy B. John and Viola F. Mulnix, and lived most of his youth

in Nucla, CO. He married his eternal sweetheart, Eleanor Mary Barlow in the Salt Lake Temple on June 11, 1957. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Eleanor (Elly), and their eight children, Lorin (Julie), Keith (Gloria), Diana Oaks (Adam), Coleen Long (Steven), David, Glenn Oliver (Laura), Patrick (Kristine), and Perry (Jamie), as well as

28 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; his sister, Betty Fern Davis; brother, Kyle (Cheryl); and brother, Danny (Orvella). He was preceded in death by his parents, brother David John, sister Dorothy Galyean; and grandson, Brian John. He graduated with a Master’s degree in Geology from Brigham Young University in 1964. He

worked as a Geologist for the U.S. Geological Survey in Albuquerque, NM; Kennecott Copper Corp. at the Bingham Mine west of Salt Lake City, UT; and ASARCO at the Ray Mine North of Kearny, AZ. He was listed in Who’s Who of the West for his successes in that field. He was a faithful member of the in the LDS Church and worked in the scouting

program in Utah and Arizona, earning the Silver Beaver award for his many years of leadership in the Boy Scouts. He served as Bishop of the Kearny, AZ ward and as a missionary in the California Mission from ’55 – ’57, following with a second mission along with Eleanor in the California Fresno Mission. He was a true advocate for the young men of the church and

community, and volunteered his time to coach youth baseball teams for many years. A Memorial Service will be on Saturday, March 30 at 11:00 a.m. at the Kearny LDS Chapel, 200 Hammond Dr. Donations in his memory may be made in lieu of flowers, to the Boy Scouts of America or the LDS Church Humanitarian fund.

Pinal County Homicide Detectives have confirmed the identity of a deceased male found in the San Carlos Apache Reservation area near Dudleyville as Gary D. Crawford, 62. On Jan. 17, 2013, Tribal

Police contacted the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office and informed them that a non-Native American body was found on reservation land deceased due to apparent exposure. Because the victim was

not a Native American, jurisdiction belonged to PCSO. PCSO Public Information Officer Tamra Ingersoll said that Crawford’s death was certified as an accident.

An accident without injuries was reported at the intersection of Fourth Ave and Hayden Ave. A commercial vehicle attempting to make the turn collided with a fire hydrant. closer, Board Chairman Steve Miller and District 1 Supervisor Pete Rios have pledged to not raise

County budget looms; Supervisors pledge no tax increasesproperty taxes and stifle additional spending in light of a $6.3 million loss in revenue from last year. However, they say costs expected to pile up in the courts and law enforcement stemming from the county attorney’s office restructuring will pose a challenge to zeroing out the bottom line. In a written statement, Miller outlined two hard objectives for the budget talks: no increase in the property tax rate and a freezing of department spending. “Pinal County already has the highest primary property tax rate and the second highest tax burden of Arizona’s 15 counties,” he argued. “Our ultimate goal is to bring the tax levy to a reasonable level.” In a response statement,

Rios doubled down on these pledges. “No one should be surprised to find I am in complete agreement with Chairman Miller’s vision for the budget,” he wrote. However, declining valuations from 2010 and 2011are still hurting tax income. The county will collect 7.7 percent less on property tax, a difference of $6.3 million. “With the exception of slight upticks in state sales tax revenues,” Miller wrote, “the signs of recovery that we are beginning to see won’t be reflected in county property tax revenues for another 12 to 18 months.” In January, the Board approved a reorganization proposed by County Attorney Lando Voyles which added a total of 30 new paralegal and administrative positions to the office at a cost of about $1 million this fiscal year. Voyles told the Board the additional employees would allow for more trials and prosecutions of violent crime suspects. Speaking with Copper

Area News, both Rios and Miller said they were not interested in letting off violent criminals. However, as more cases are taken to trial, the two expect greater costs to manifest in the courts and in the Sheriff’s office down the line. Miller said Maricopa County takes about 5 percent of its cases to trial and Pinal was running about 3 percent of cases during the previous administration. “I’m sure that was to keep costs down,” he said. Rios said Voyles’ restructuring was similar

to one made by former Maricopa County attorney Andrew Thomas when Rios served in the state legislature, and the cost with other entities affiliated with the criminal justice system also went up. Among the added costs coming down the line will be more jail space and detention officers for the Sheriff’s office, Rios said, as well as busier courts and additional public defenders. Rios said the county already spends about half of its general fund budget on public safety, and that if citizens want more funds sent toward that realm, it will mean shortfalls elsewhere. “Other programs and areas may need to be cut to address this particular concern,” he said. Sheriff Paul Babeu indicated to the Board in January that his office will likely request more funding. The Supervisors said they have yet to hear proposals from other department heads. Miller said lowering taxes was the most important goal he heard from voters during the election. “It’s not attractive to industry, and we’ve got one of the poorest in incomes in the state,” he said. “For once, I would love to be average,” he said with a laugh.

By Bob MoralesSpecial to the CBNKearny – R & R Roping Productions held another successful event during this latest Pioneer Days. The only thing lacking was parking space. Both participants and fans filed the Kearny Sheriff’s Posse Arena. Ropers came from far and wide, including White River Snowflake, Show Low, Globe Oracle, Tucson, Aravaipa, San Manuel, Dudleyville, Mesa, Queen Creek, Apache Junction and one who lives on a ranch two miles west of Florence Junction. Eight-year-old Rene Arviga Jr. debuted in the Saturday session, roping with his dad, Rene Sr. He had a good outing, roping five and missing three. His older sister, Ahleah, 10, was also to debut but, fell ill. Local young roping champions Steve and John Henry Gaona roped both days. Another local champion, Celina Arviga, participated. Danny Padillo, Kearny’s own professional roper, participated in Sundays session. Jaime Morales and Lorrie Garcia keep the roping running smoothly, responsible for pairing ropers, keeping times, and collecting fees. Jaime keeps the roping moving by calling ropers to chutes and announcing roping times. Lorrie records all roping times and winners names. This year, the concession stand added carne asada burros to go along with the ever-tasty red and green chili burros. Maurio Parra was in charge of the grill. Liz Parra and Barbara Martony, along with Tina Mendoza, prepared the menudo, red chili and green chili. The menudo was especially good. Oh—and Jimmy C. from White River says, “Hi.”

It’s especially impressive when considering the Bearcats have eight freshmen on the team. The Bearcats started play in the Salt River Tournament with three consecutive victories over Desert Christian, Bagdad, and Valley Lutheran. They won by scores of

7 – 4, 23 – 3, and 11 – 2 respectively. Savannah Willis was the player of the game vs. Desert Christian as she went 2-2, scored a run, and had an RBI in the game. Lucy Sainz was the player of the game vs. Bagdad with four hits and four RBI. Stormee Galka was 3-4 with 2 doubles, a triple, and three RBI in the game vs. Valley Lutheran. The Bearcats next game is in the tournament on

March 23, 2013, before returning home on Mar. 25 to take on Hayden. Ray Jr High baseball team starts season 2 – 2By Andrew Luberda Head baseball coach Bobby Meza is satisfied with the start to the season for his team and expects the experiences in the early season to pay off in the future. “I feel the second half of the season we’re going to step it up and have a good run to the playoffs,” Meza said. “I have a good group of kids, including some that haven’t played before and all of them are coming along well.” Coach Meza has a young team as six starters on the ball club are 7th graders, but coach Meza won’t change his approach. “I have high expectations for every team I coach.
