By Vicki Clark Four posts in three and a half years of ministry may not look good on most resumes, but Fr. Robert Rodriguez says he’s most proud of that distinction. Fr. Robert, who took over the reins at St. Joseph Parish in Hayden in November, answered a call from the Diocese of Tucson’s Bishop Kicanas in November, when the parish needed someone to

replace long time Pastor, Fr. Dale Branson. “The Bishop has confi dence in my ability to jump in and get things done,” Fr. Robert said. “I credit that trait to my parents who have always jumped in and got things done.” Fr. Robert, who was born and raised in Yuma, is one of 13 children and he says there was lots of drama in his household growing up,

St. Joseph Parish welcomes new priestso he’s used to handling situations in a hurry. After high school graduation Fr. Robert attended Arizona Western College for two years. He then moved to Wisconsin and attended the Sacred Heart School of Theology where he attained a Masters of Divinity degree. “I was there for six and a half years and was so ready

to get back to the desert,” Father said. He was ordained a deacon in 2007 in his home parish of Immaculate Conception in Yuma and was ordained as a priest on June 7, 2008 at the St. Augustine Cathedral in Tucson. He then served at St. Elizabeth Anne Seton and St. Joseph’s, both in Tucson, and then was

sent to Douglas where he served three parishes and two missions. He has served as the Chaplain, representing Bishop Kicanas, for the Girls and Boys Scouts in the Diocese and also works with the Cursillo Movement and Rachel’s Vineyard, a group that offers help and healing to women who have had

abortions. Last August he traveled to Madrid Spain with a group of high school students from Immaculate Heart in Tucson to attend World Youth Day. “This is such a positive event for young Catholics,” Father said. It was so exciting and spiritually fulfi lling to see their faith in action.” Although Fr. Robert is interested in all aspects of his ministry and is willing to listen to what the people of his parish wants, he especially enjoys working with the youth. He is currently instrumental in forming a Youth Ministry Group for teenagers from both St. Joseph and Infant Jesus of Prague. The group meets the fi rst Sunday of the month. Other plans include breathing life back into the Catechism program at all grade levels. “We have the volunteers and the resources and I’m ready to get started,” he said. He would also like to have a Vacation Bible School program combining the Copper Basin area parishes during the summer and perhaps doing some retreats for both teenagers and adults. Fr. Robert said that because Fr. Dale left the Parish in such great shape both fi nancially and physically, he doesn’t plan to change very much. “We will be remodeling the offi ce and gift shop,” he said. “Both spaces are really cramped and they will be expanded.” He also had a spotlight put on the church’s cross and had trees and brush removed from in front to the church to allow a better view from the highway. “Many people don’t even realize there is a church up here,” he said. “Now it can be seen.” When asked how he liked the Copper Basin so far, Fr. Robert said he loved the area. “The people are

By Rosalind Padilla This is the week for deadlines if you are a queen candidate, beard contest participant or Copper Basin Idol. contestant. The Chamber office is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. so drop by Thursday or Friday of this week. Citizen of the Year nominations are being accepted now. The deadline is Feb. 8 at which time the COY Committee will make the selection; pictures and biographies of those nominated will appear in the Copper Basin News. The annual Chamber business meeting and announcement of the 2011 COY will take place Monday, Feb. 27, at Trendz Restaurant in Hayden on Highway 177. Candidates must live in the Copper Basin area and be nominated for community service. Letters must be signed and give a detailed description of accomplishments. The queen and junior queen contestants will have their first meeting Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. at the Pinal County Building and every Wednesday until Pioneer Days. Attendance at these meetings is mandatory and will include pointers on how to conduct them selves as candidates, fashion and cosmetology. They will be given their tickets for the annual drawing which has been a part of Pioneer Days since 1961. Ticket winners will receive cash prizes. Angela Ramirez, Shelly Huerta and Hope Kame will lead the group joined by Joyleign Wormwood representing her cosmetic company Jolie Fille and Lisa Holmes of La Chez Vu who will provide the clothes for the fashion show which will be held March 10 at the Women’s Expo at the Hayden High Mini Auditorium. Gary Hill assisted by Joan Hill and Charlie Poarch are seeking beard contest participants. There are two categories: clean shaven

and already grown beards. Sign up at the Chamber office this week and have your picture taken Jan. 23-25 to mark the beginning of the Beard Growing Contest. Judges have been chosen and cash prizes will be given for categories within the two divisions. Winners will be announced on Thursday, March 29, just before the Queen is announced at Pioneer Park. If you love to sing and would like to show your talent to the public, register at the Chamber office this week. Age groups are 3-12 Junior Idol, 13 and up Idol; adults are also invited to compete. Martina Burnam will be having meetings with auditions to be held prior to Pioneer Days and all contestants will have the opportunity to sing prior to the announcements of Queens, Friday evening and Saturday at Pioneer Park. The Idol contest will be held in May, and whoever is chosen will represent the Chamber and the Copper Basin area throughout the year until the next Pioneer Days. The next Pioneer Days meeting is Thursday, Jan. 26, at the Church of the Good Shepherd at 7 p.m. We may have just the job for you. The State of Arizona is suggesting that everyone volunteer 100 hours between now and Feb. 14 which we are extending through Pioneer Days. There are many ways in which you can volunteer. The Copper Community Action Board needs help with their current projects in Hayden, Winkelman and surrounding communities ( check with Gloria Ruiz and Martina for more details); Food Bank; Teen Center and community sports leagues and the Hand Me UP Shop. And the Chamber to name a few. Those of you who have ATVs and other off road vehicles, who are hunters or just love to hike, know all the trails in our surrounding area: we have some of the

Deadlines and Trails … Pioneer Days 2012most beautiful spots in the state. Many are unknown to the general public and are off shoots of the Old Kelvin to Florence road, the Ray Road, Hayden – Winkelman road, the Old Tucson Highway – all the same road just different names depending upon the direction you were traveling in those days. Parts of those are still visible from the new Highway 177 and parts are still passable. Some of the favorite trails were roads used by the stage coaches, mining carts, cowboy and ranchers or are Indian trails. You may even find natural springs along the way. Following the theme “Celebrating Arizona’s 100 Years with Rails and Trails,” stories have already

appeared in the Nugget. Since I am not an employee of the Copper Basin News I can say that the Nugget is a free, monthly news magazine published by the Carnes family and features the arts of all varieties found along the Copper Corridor which includes Superior to SaddleBrooke and Miami / Globe. John Hernandez has already been writing about Trails and interesting experiences along these trails. This publication is truly a Nugget and can be obtained at the local CBN office and most stores in the community. The December and January issues have the beginnings of the Trail articles. Doug Hamilton, an author and historian who lives in Kearny, will also

be submitting some of his research... Ask any of our winter visitors about the Arboretum (they are usually repeat visitors where as local residents tend to just drive by), it is a super, amazing touch of local and international horticulture and the trails have great history

especially because it is at the foot of Picket Post where Indians, cavalry and prospectors roamed or lived. If you have not been there make it one of the trails you roam during our Centennial year. Check out the map at the Superior Rest Area for ideas. As Roy Rogers used to sing, Happy Trails to You.

Success By 612th Annual Read to Kids Day 2012

Volunteers Needed: Sort, Label & Deliver BooksRead A Book, Build A Library & Create A Few Smiles!

Take a few minutes out of your day to read to a child. Contact Head Start, a Child Care Center or Elementary School (Pre K or Kindergarten class) of your choice in Pinal County and schedule a time to read. When children are read to they acquire a love for reading, build a strong vocabulary and develop healthy brain connections. For every volunteer who reads on January 26, 2012, Success By 6, with the generous support of our sponsors will donate a new book to that classroom’s library. As an additional benefit every child that attends the event will receive one age appropriate book of their own to take home.

By Steve YurekPastor, Kearny SBC Last week we talked about what I feel the Bible shares are the five purposes of the church. We also talked about who and what the church really is….and that is you and me. Yes we are the church. The actual building is a place for us to belong and to share our gifts, talents and blessings with others; a place to ask questions, laugh together, to share what God is doing in our lives, to eat together and a place to serve each other and those in our community. With that said here are the five purposes again: (1) To worship God (2) To belong to the community of believers (3) To grow in spiritual maturity (4) To serve others (5) To share

Pastor’s Cornerthe Gospel. This week I would like to take the first purpose and go a little deeper. So how would you define a WORSHIPPING

CHURCH? The Bible teaches that we are put on this earth primarily to know and walk with the God who made us and to bring glory

to His name. Our worship of God must engage the mind, but it must also engage the affections, the heart, our emotions, and our spirit. That does not

mean that worship has to necessarily be emotional or involve an outward emotional display to be “in the spirit,” but it does mean the heart must be engaged. We show outward excitement and worship to sports, musicians, and celebrities. It would seem only right that God

would deserve more. A worshipping church is a place where God is exalted in spirit and in truth. What do you think? Let me know what you think by sending me a letter or email at [email protected] and please worship God somewhere this week! God Loves You!By Georgie Wood

([email protected]) The enjoyable Facebook Group “Growing Up In Hayden/Winkelman”, cre-ated by Rebecca Garcia, was described very well by Rich-ard N. “Nick” Avenetti in his Letter to the Editor that was published in the September 28, 2011 issue of the Copper Basin News. There are now over 650 people who have joined the group, and I must be one of the oldest, although I sometimes brag that I am genetically younger than my real age, which I won’t tell! What feel-ings of nostalgia I have when reading most of the posts en-tered by those who have shared their recollections of their growing-up years! Very inter-esting pictures and early maps have also been posted. Among those who have contributed much information are Ernie Parks and Edward Peed. Ernie Parks also has an interesting website “azbackcountryadven-tures.com”, and Edward Peed has contributed much informa-tion and pictures to the website

Georgie Digs ...“arizonagravestones.org”. While the Facebook Group “Growing Up In Hayden/Winkelman” is an open group, meaning anyone can see the group, who’s in it, and what members post, the “Dud-leyville/ Aravaipa” Facebook Group, created by Vic Morales, is a closed group, meaning anyone can see the group and who’s in it, but only mem-bers see the posts. The last I checked there were 112 mem-bers. Of interest in this group is some of the information and pictures posted by Harold Kel-ley and Joe Bittick. One picture is of Harold Kelley’s grand-father, Roy McClure, playing his fiddle, and who had owned

circa 1920 to 1939 the present-day Carol Steele Aravaipa Farms along Aravaipa Creek. Another early picture circa 1939 is of members of the Bit-tick family when they were on the San Pedro River farm prop-erty that is now owned by The Nature Conservancy (TNC). That is another TNC property that has “gone back to nature” and doesn’t look at all like it earlier did when it was farmed and well taken care of. It has been stated that the problem that had occurred and became worse about the San Pedro River crossing at Dudleyville was caused by a newcomer to the area and

By Nolberto Waddell The Hayden Lobos boys basketball team was hoping that the third time would be the charm in their basketball contest against the Ray Bearcats and for a few minutes to start the game it looked like it just might happen. The Lobos came out of the gates running and playing good defense against a very good and talented Bearcat team taking a 10 point lead two minutes into the game but the game is not for two minutes – it’s for 32 minutes. The Ray coach called a timeout and challenged his team and it woke them up and the Lobos could not stop the blitzkrieg that hit them after the timeout. The Lobos had a quick 12 to 2 lead on the Bearcats but it would be as close as the Lobos would get as the Bearcats hit from outside, hit inside and just about every shot they threw up went into the basket to take a six point, 19 to 25 lead over the Lobos when the first period buzzer went off. The Lobos tried as hard as they could but the Bearcat team just had too much firepower taking a 34 to 49 lead into the half time break. The Lobo team suffered from their nemeses again in the third period, a low scoring quarter, while the Bearcats continued their high scoring to put the game away at the end of the third period with a 43 to 73 score and a running clock for the fourth quarter. The game ended with a lopsided 50 to 87 win for the Bearcats. The Lobos gave it all they had but this Ray team is too big, too fast and too talented as all but one of their listed players on the book scored. The Lobos had five players record points led by their point guard, Matthew Manriquez, with 23 points to lead all scores on the night. Julian Gomez, fouling out early in the fourth quarter, pumped in

17 points. Marcos Gonzales scored six points and Adrian Ochoa had four points. The Lobos would be on the bus for a trip to Coolidge for their next game, a contest against the Imagine Prep Eagles. The Eagles only dress out one team with no JV team or girls team suiting out for the Eagles. The Eagles are no push-over with a tall team and a guard that can shoot the lights of the game when given a chance. He never got that chance as the Lobos came out running and gunning and playing some of the best defense of the season. Hopefully this kind of Lobo basketball will continue. The Lobo half-court press did a number on the Eagles’ offense recording several fast break points off the press to take a 20 to 3 lead after one quarter of play. With the Lobo starters on the bench for most of the second quarter, the Eagles made a run at the Lobos but the substitutes in the game fought back until the starters re-entered. The Lobos had a 37 to 19 lead at the end of the first half. This game the Lobos did not suffer their usual low scoring third quarter coming out running, gunning and playing great defense to build a thirty point lead at the end of the third quarter leading 63 to 33 and turning the game over to their substitutes with a running clock in the fourth quarter. The subs played the Eagle starters even, actually outscoring them by two points, in the fourth quarter to record a 69 to 37 win. Julian Gomez led all scoring in the game with 23 points. Marcos Gonzales and Matthew Manriquez each poured in 14 points. Gabriel Ramos hit for six points, Adrian Ochoa, playing his usual tough defensive game, had five points. Rodney Ortiz had four points, Roman Padilla, also with a great defensive game, had two points and

Matthew Martinez rounded out scoring with one free shot. The Lobos traveled to Miami High School on yesterday to take on the Vandals and will return to home court on Friday playing the return contest against the Imagine Prep Eagles. Friday will have only the Lobo varsity on the court taking on the Eagles with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off. The Lady Lobo basketball team had only one game last week, a contest against their rivals. In the previous two games between the Lady Lobos and the Lady Bearcats each team had won one game. With the Lady Lobos defending home court, they were not about to let the Bearcats leave Lobo Gym with a win. The Lady Lobos took it to the Lady Bearcats in the first period playing tough defense, out rebounding the Ray team and outscored them 14 to 3 at the end of the first quarter. The Lobos withstood a run by the Bearcats in the second quarter and added one point to their lead at the end of the first half leading 25 to 13. As has been the case for Lobo teams recently, the dreaded third quarter slump hit the Lady Lobos and allowed the Bearcats to get back into the game letting their 12 point lead get cut to four points but still led at the end of the third quarter 29 to 25. It would be as close as the Bearcats would get to the Lady Lobos as the Lobos found their shooting touch in the fourth quarter to hold back the Bearcats and claim the win with a 42 to 35 score. Demitria Boltarez was a force for the Lady Lobos rebounding, playing defense and led all scorers with 16 points. Yvonnah Gonzales turned in a great game for the Lobos out-dueling the Bearcats big girl under the boards and scored 12 points. Melissa Islava also

points for the Lobos. Devin Estrada scored three Lobo points with Clarissa Chavez

scoring two points and Kyana Garcia getting one free shot to go in.

The Lady Lobos had only one game this week, a trip to Miami

environmental groups. There is also speculation about fu-ture changes along the San Pedro River since the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) is wanting to form a collaborative conservation and management initiative along the San Pedro River from south of Cascabel to Winkelman. There are some who believe that farmers and ranchers might be negatively affected when both extreme conservationists and some gov-

ernment agencies are behind new regulatory changes, de-spite the fact that most farmers and ranchers are good stewards of the lands on which their livelihoods depend. I attended the first local public meeting about this FWS objective on September 22, 2011 at the Aravaipa Campus of Central Arizona College (CAC), and was very impressed that so many people, not only farmers and ranchers, had attended, and I understand more public meet-ings will be held. I want to applaud our local

Winkelman Natural Resource Conservation District (WN-RCD), of which Bill Dunn is Chairman and is admired for his work. I haven’t attended many of their meetings, but I really enjoy their newsletters which also cover the goals and accomplishments of the WNRCD which should be of interest to all. The WNRCD Supervisors are Beverly Miller, Gary Vinson, Peter Else and Diana Manning; District Clerk is Vicki France; and Newsletter and Website Editor is Jenny Cordrey.

Come to the 54th Gila County Gem and Mineral Show at the Gila County Fairgrounds, three miles north of the junction of U.S. 60 and 70, near Globe. The show is open on Friday, Jan. 20, from 9 a.m. -5 p.m. and the same hours on Saturday, Jan. 21, then again on Sunday, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Students and children get in free and it’s only $3 for each adult or $5 per couple. The gem show regularly features unfinished stones as well as finished jewelry, lapidary supplies, and artisans ready to demonstrate their fine craftsmanship. During the

days, there will be special presentations on mining and fossils. The front room will have displays, dealers and demonstrations, and there will be a continuing silent auction, as well as door prizes and a snack bar, provided by the Fraternal Order of Police, to tempt your tummy with deliciously edible eatables. The Wheel of Fortune game and the Grab Bags, always popular, will be available for play. This year’s show will also include exciting new areas, such as an 5,000 square foot room built for hands-on learning and presentations.

Kids! Come gold panning, fossil digging and geode breaking. Rough rocks will be available to take home or to cut and polish, and, if you bring a picture of your pet, a local artist will paint it on a rock as a keepsake. It’s a great way to have fun with friends and maybe bring home a special treasure. All kids activities are for a very small donation, and kids keep whatever they find, win or have painted. For more information contact: John O’Brien, Show Chairman (408) 421-2654 and check out the new web site at gilagem.com.
