Compiled by Mila Lira At press time the Copper was being sold at $3.52 a pound. Resolution Copper Resolution Copper recently gave an update to the Superior Town Council and their stakeholders last week. Jon Cherry, Vice President of Environment, Legal and External relations explained in the update that in 2011 Resolution Copper gave $51,000 in financial support to education based programming and $582,000 to community charitable giving in

Superior and throughout the Copper Corridor. Cherry also commented that they remain optimistic that the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange will be approved before the August Congressional Recess. Currently there has been a backlog of federal land exchange bills and there is some hope that the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act can be passed before a new congress is seated in January 2013. Currently the number 10 shaft is at *5474 feet

below the Earth’s surface. The number nine shaft redevelopment is currently at *3170 feet below the Earth’s surface. These numbers were reported to the Copper Area News on April 27. Millrock Announces Drill Results and Further Drilling Plans, San Jose and Dry Mountain Copper Porphyry Project, Safford District, Southeast Arizona Millrock Resources Inc. announced last month results of recent drilling at its San Jose project located in the Safford District of

southeast Arizona. Four drill holes were completed by Millrock with funding provided by Inmet Mining Corporation (“Inmet”). Inmet has the option to earn a 70% interest in the project. Also, Millrock and Inmet announced that they will proceed with an additional drill program on the project later in 2012. The holes in the most recent program were drilled in the northern part of Millrock’s San Jose property and targeted anomalies detected by airborne ZTEM geophysical methods.

Weak mineralization was identified in one hole, and porphyry-style alteration was observed in two other holes. Geological observations indicate proximity to a porphyry deposit. Millrock and

its partner Inmet have agreed to carry out further drilling to test magnetic anomalies in proximity to known porphyry mineralization and anomalous geochemical

By Vicki Clark “When one door shuts, another door opens,” is the philosophy that the new Hayden Chief of Police embraced when he was offered a new career opportunity with the Town of Hayden. S. G. Gillen began his duties as Chief last October and arrived with a resume that included 20 years’ experience with the Pinal County Sheriff Department. During his tenure as a Sheriff Deputy, Gillen said he worked in several capacities including narcotics, homicide and patrol. He also was with the S.W.A.T. team for 17 years where he was commander for seven years, and served as the president of the Pinal County Sheriff’s Association. “I saw coming to Hayden as a challenge to use my experience to improve the HPD,” the Chief said. “This can be a very progressive agency…the groundwork has already been laid…after all, the officers held it together during the time that there was no chief…it just needs some fine tuning. I’m here to assist and to help out.” The Chief had a plan and began to implement it as soon as he took over. Some of the ideas he wanted to bring to HPD included developing a policy and procedure that he says is half done. Also man power issues which are done with the hiring of two officers with another in the works. He is in the process of starting a K-9 program that he hopes will serve the entire Copper Corridor from Superior to Oracle. A law enforcement computer system is also

almost done, and will be piggybacked with Gila County and security of the Police Station has been put into place with the remodeling of the station. Chief Gillen also has visions for the future of

HPD. He would like to start a Volunteer Auxiliary that would involve reserve officers and volunteers. He would also like to return the dispatch center to Hayden and he would like for the community to

become more involved in police action. Chief Gillen is a transplant to Arizona coming from New Jersey in the late 1980s. He is married and has a daughter and his passions

include collecting law enforcement badges and patches. The Chief said he really likes the Copper Basin area and has found the people to be concerned and compassionate. He

added that the Hayden Town Council has been very helpful and supportive of his ideas. “All this has my new career transition easier and I’m glad to be here,” he said.

April 4, 2012 – Ernest Bustamante, a Democrat, has announced that he is running for Arizona State Representative in the newly drawn Legislative District 8, which includes: Globe, Miami, Superior, Kearny, Hayden, Dudleyville, Winkelman, Mammoth, San Manuel, Oracle, Florence, Eloy, Coolidge, Casa Grande, and San Tan Valley. Democrats (38%) outnumber Republicans (28%) by ten points in Legislative District 8. [www.azredistricting.org] Bustamante stated, “This election, we have the opportunity to take back our district, which has been controlled by Republican extremists who have made wreckless cuts to education and waged war against women

and working families. I am running for State Representative because Arizona needs new leadership and a new direction -- a path that puts working families first!” Ernest Bustamante grew up in the copper mining community of Winkelman and graduated from Hayden High School. He attended Central Arizona College and is employed at ASARCO, where he is a proud member of the United Steelworkers Union, serving two terms as Vice President. Ernest is a former legislator (2003-2004) who helped pass all-day Kindergarten and worked on a bi-partisan basis to restore funding for transportation Pinal County. At the local level, Ernest sat on

the Mammoth Town Council, where he built roads, received grants to improve the parks, and served as Commissioner of the Planning and Zoning Board. He is also a former small business owner of San Pedro Valley Transport, a non-emergency medical transportation service. Ernest has also been active coaching Pop Warner Football, Community Schools basketball, boxing, and volunteering with the Eastern Pinal Literacy Council. But the role he is most proud of is being a husband and father of three children. Ernest and his wife, Martha, have been married 35 years and currently reside in Mammoth. Bustamante stated, “I

understand the needs of working families and the issues that we face, especially in this tough economic climate. As State Representative, I will work diligently to create jobs, support education, and promote new sources of energy such as solar and wind technology. The future of Arizona’s economy is going to be directly impacted on how we address education today. Are we going to prepare our children for a global workforce? Or continue the same archaic policies that have ranked us last in education for years. We need a change. The future of our state depends on it.” More information can be found at www.VoteBustamante.com.

PHOENIX – Due to the high risk of wildfire in southeastern Arizona, State Forester Scott Hunt today announced that the Arizona State Forestry Division will be implementing fire restrictions for 3.5 million acres of state-owned lands in that region. Effective Monday, May 7, 2012, at 8 a.m., fire restrictions on State lands will prohibit campfires, charcoal-burning devices and use of acetylene or

other torches. Smoking is also prohibited unless it is within an enclosed vehicle or building, developed campground or area that is cleared of all flammable materials. These restrictions include a prohibition on the use of any fireworks. “In light of the increasing fire danger and wildfire activity we are seeing in the southeastern portion of the State, these fire restrictions are necessary

Arizona State Forester issues fire restrictions on state-owned lands in Southeast Arizona

to prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public health and safety,” said State Forester Scott Hunt “It’s especially important that Arizonans follow these restrictions and others implemented locally to limit the potential of

devastating fires this summer.” Arizonans are asked to be especially careful with fire in all parts of the state, not just in the areas covered by these restrictions. State lands in other regions may be placed in restrictions

in the subsequent weeks as fire danger conditions warrant. These fire restrictions apply to the following

FLORENCE – Spring rains contribute to the growth of brush and weeds in our yards and in the open desert. Higher temperatures will dry the weeds, tumbleweeds and desert brush and what was formerly green and beautiful becomes fuel for fi erce wildfi res. By becoming Firewise,* you can protect your home and your community. Firewise is group of principles that you can use to create “defensible space” around your home. Defensible space means

Clean means you clean out dead plant material from around your home. Green means you have planted fi re-resistant vegetation and are keeping it healthy and green. Coolidge, Ariz. - Lifelong Pinal County resident and democrat Mary Bateman-Espinoza has announced her candidacy and campaign for the office of Pinal County Supervisor - District One. Bateman-Espinoza is the former Public Fiduciary for Pinal County. She retired from that position in 2006 after 30 years of public service providing support and advocacy to elderly and vulnerable adults residing in the county. Since 2007, Bateman-Espinoza has been self-employed providing professional fiduciary and case management services. Throughout her career, Bateman-Espinoza collaborated and created liaisons with public and private organizations to develop and improve the quality and delivery of health and social services to Pinal County residents. Bateman-Espinoza has extensive work experience in efficient planning, organizing and directing the duties and responsibilities of public service agencies, which is vital during tough economic times.

Meaningful District Representation Beginning in 2013, Pinal County will seat five supervisors instead of three. This is a direct result of the county’s population growth over the past several years and it should provide a more balanced representation of the county’s citizenry. In the course of the growth, District One has experienced less population increase than most parts of the county. This district is very scenic, provides for much of the county’s “wilderness” recreational activities and it provides a large part of the county’s agricultural, dairy and mining endeavors. Bateman-Espinoza stated, “We want this district to benefit from the economic growth Pinal County will experience, however, we also want to ensure the district’s distinct characteristics, local interests, values and histories are protected. As supervisor for District One, I will be the voice that represents the area’s “character,” and, at the same time, work to

Mary Bateman-Espinoza

Mary Bateman-Espinoza to run for Supervisorensure the development of vital local economic opportunities.” Bateman-Espinoza said, “I care deeply for people, always welcome input and find fulfillment in improving the lives of others. Clearly, our county needs leaders who will work with others to find solutions to our concerns. I’m very excited about the challenges, growth and opportunities which lay ahead for our county.” Bateman-Espinoza concluded, “I have the education and experience necessary to understand the government process. I have spent the last 35 years protecting, serving and advocating for vulnerable populations. I have advocated for their rights, desires and best interests in our courts system, as well as with federal, state and local government programs. I have the courage to stand alone, if need be, to ensure individual rights are not ignored. I pledge to serve as supervisor for the people in District One with that same sense of ethical and

moral responsibility.” Biographical information Bateman-Espinoza was born and raised in Oracle and has lived in Coolidge since she and her husband John were married in 1977. Mary and John raised five children and they have 10 grandchildren. Bateman-Espinoza has a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Police Administration from Northern Arizona University and a Master’s of Counseling Degree from the University of Phoenix. She is a licensed professional fiduciary through the Arizona Supreme Court and she is a Certified Guardian through the National Guardianship Foundation. In 1976, Bateman-Espinoza was appointed as the Pinal County Public Fiduciary (Public Guardian) and she served in that position for 30 years. From 1991 until her retirement from the county in 2006, she simultaneously served as Director for the Pinal County Medical Examiner’s Office and the Pinal County Division

of Behavioral Health. Bateman-Espinoza now owns and operates the private fiduciary practice she opened in 2007. Over the years, Bateman-Espinoza has developed significant insight and knowledge relative to the health and social issues

concerning our aging population and vulnerable populations. She has an extensive background in working with and advocating for older adults, the frail elderly, developmentally disabled individuals and people with mental illness.

Former Hayden wrestler Lino Estrada spends a weekend working with young wrestlers in San Manuel. (John Hernandez photos)

By John Hernandez On Saturday, the Comet Wrestling team and other wrestlers from around the area got to participate in a wrestling seminar and folk wrestling tournament. Three wrestlers from Grand Canyon University came to San Manuel High School to provide some training for the young wrestlers. The wrestlers were three time All-American and the 2012 NCAA Division II National Champion Victor Carazo, Madison Gambrell, and Hayden High School’s own three-time State Champion Lino Estrada. Lino was a red-shirt sophomore this year at Grand Canyon College and just missed qualifying for the Nationals by finishing fifth in the Regional tournament this year. The top four places went to the National Tournament. Grand Canyon University finished third in the NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament. It was the highest finish by a Grand Canyon wrestling team. In winning the National title at 174 pounds, Victor Carazo defeated two three-time All-Americans. The three wrestlers

National champion, former Lobo teach young wrestlers

talked with the young wrestlers and taught them different wrestling moves and techniques. The tournaments and instruction sessions will help the wrestlers to get experience, learn from good competition and improve their wrestling skills and conditioning. Madison Gambrell and Lino Estrada will be back next year to wrestle for Grand Canyon University. Victor Carazo is graduating

but said he will still be with the program in a coaching position. If you missed out on this folk wrestling tournament, don’t despair. The Comets along with Mammoth-San Manuel Community Schools are hosting several other dates this summer for wrestlers: May 26, June 9, June 30, July 14, July 28 and Aug. 11. The Ray Junior High track team had another good season in their second year as participants in the Central Junior High League. The Ray teams competed in the CJHL track championship on April 26 in San Manuel and came away with a relay team and a boy’s individual champion after the day was done. The girl’s team had another fine showing as they brought the runner-up trophy home after a hard day of work. Claire Cude had an impressive day as she scored 21 total points by taking first in the long jump (14.0’); third in the 100m dash (14.47); 4th in the 200m dash (32.27) and helped take third on the 4 X 100m relay team. Teammate Julia Coryell had a productive day

as well as she collected 13 points by finishing in second place in the shot put (25’9”); fourth place in the discus throw (56’3”) and ran a leg on the 4 X 400m relay team that took seventh place overall. Jordan Baca and Iiana Goad both brought in 8.5 points during the day. Baca’s day saw her place fifth in both the 200m dash (32.33) and 400m dash (1:15.07). Baca also took eighth in the 100m dash (15.28) and also participated on the 4 X 100 relay team. Other Bearcats who scored points on the day were Alexia Lopez (7

Aylin Estrada picked up a single point by finishing in eighth place in the 400m dash (1:17.83). Estrada also participated on the 4 X 400 relay team. Other Bearcats girls who competed and finished just out the top 8 were Ashley Rutter, Ella Miller, Jazmyne Giorsetti and Allison Ballard. Rutter however, participated on both relay teams during the day. The boy’s team finishing fourth overall in the league had impressive showings by several individuals and laid claim to the champion 4 X 100 relay team for 2012. The champion relay team consisted of Jonah

Cude, Jeron Coleman, Paul Wormwood and Tanner Willis. Individually, for the Bearcats, Jeron Coleman’s 22 individual points was the team’s high performance for the day. Coleman’s points were a result of winning the high jump with a jump of 4’8” and finishing second in the 400m dash with a time of 1:03.97. Coleman placed fifth in the 200m dash (29.28) and played a significant role in the champion relay team. Paul Michael Wormwood collected 20 overall points by finishing second in the 100m dash (12.90); second in the discus throw( 94’11”); fifth place in the shot put (32’4”) and also contributed on the winning 4 X 100m relay team Robbie Gillaspy collected 8 points on the day by

Junior High track season concludes at CJHL Championship Meet

By Steve YurekPastor, Kearny SBC What would we do without our mothers or wives? Wouldn’t it be safe to say (if we were completely honest with ourselves) that we would be lost without them, the truth is we would not exist without them, mothers play such an important role in the fabric of life and the role of a mother is critical to proper development of joyfully happy and healthy children. This past Sunday we celebrated Mothers Day – a day to honor the woman that spends 50 percent of her time working, 50 percent taking care of her husband and 50 percent of her time with her children…how does she so this? A very

special THANK YOU to mothers everywhere for ALL you do! So…what is JOY? And is it the same as HAPPY? How can a person actually be JOYFULLY HAPPY? We tend to equate “happiness” with “joy” but they are two totally different ideas because they each spring from a different source. One comes from the world around us. The other originates directly from the Spirit of the Living God. Happiness is conditioned by and often dependent upon what is “happening” to me or you. If people treat us good, if things are going well in our life, then we’re happy. If our circumstances are unfavorable, then we’re

unhappy. Happiness comes from the world around us. Joy, on the other hand, is seen throughout the Bible as a profound, compelling quality of life that transcends the events and disasters of life. Joy is a divine dimension of living that is not shackled by circumstances. Joy comes only from the Spirit of the Living God. The word Joy actually means “to leap or spin around with pleasure.” So…how do you become JOYFULLY HAPPY? That’s easy, all we have to do is follow the teachings of the greatest man who ever walked on this earth. Jesus said in Matthew 22:37 - 37‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with

all your soul, and with all your mind.’ But, He did not just stop there. He continued to say in verses 38-39- 39”This is the great and foremost commandment. 39 The second is like it, ‘ You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” You see Love is the fuel for life…without love there can be no joy! When life gets rough - love gives strength. When life gets tough - love gives power. When life lets you down - love gives encouragement. When life seems empty - love gives meaning. When life seems sad - love gives JOY. Don’t miss this Fridays movie at the SBC – HUGO! Twelve-year-old Hugo lives in the walls of a busy Paris train station, where his

survival depends on secrets and anonymity. But when his world suddenly interlocks with an eccentric girl and the owner of a small toy booth in the train station, Hugo’s undercover life, and his most precious secret, are put in jeopardy. EVERY Friday night it is “FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES” at 7 p.m. FREE Popcorn, FREE Lemonade, and candy and sodas for sale at the concession stand staffed by Fellowship Baptist Church Youth Group. Enjoy the air-conditioned comfort with padded seats (but you might want to bring a cushion for a little more comfort). HUGO – this Friday night at 7 p.m. on the big Screen. There will NOT be a

Sunday night (6 p.m.) service this Sunday because of Graduation activities, but will restart the following Sunday with our ‘non-traditional’ time of praise and worship with WALKING-180 leading us! Join us as we ‘Celebrate the Journey’ Sunday mornings at 11am & 6 p.m. Don’t forget the Greatest Gift is still – FREE! That is the gift of Eternal Life through a personal relationship with our Lord - Jesus Christ! Please visit a church that shares the truth this weekend! So, there you have it…If you have any questions or comments please send me a note at [email protected] or give me call at 520-363-9573. Smile…God loves YOU!!!

Soon, a Safe Journey House, an advocacy center for victims of domestic abuse, will be firmly established in San Manuel. There is just one thing holding it back. Unfortunately, that one thing is not a lack of potential clients. “We operate primarily with volunteers and are

currently in desperate need for more volunteer advocate assistants,” said Linda Kadlecek. An assistant would work under the supervision of a trained advocate, helping out as needed, with such tasks as making copies, answering the telephone, entertaining children, filing and research. The shifts are four hours

each from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 1-5 p.m., Monday – Friday. Volunteers who can spare four hours per week, bi-weekly or even once a month are sought for each shift. A person on the JOBS program or in need of community service work might find that they are the ideal applicant. What better way to help

yourself, by honing job skills and gaining experience, than by helping others? For more information, contact Linda Kadlecek, at (520) 487-2355, or call either Carol Heflebower or Doris Haynes at the center, (520) 385-4970. The Safe Journey House is located at 212 East Fifth Street in San Manuel.

FLORENCE – Parvovirus is a serious, extremely contagious viral infection that primarily affects dogs. Recently, Pinal County Animal Care & Control has seen an increase in the number of new intakes, strays and puppies that

appear sick with Parvo infection. Parvo infection is preventable with a vaccine. All dogs coming into the shelter are vaccinated against a variety of infections, including Parvo, but the vaccine does not

help an already sick dog. Even after vaccination, there is a period of susceptibility that can last up to two weeks until the vaccine reaches full effectiveness. “People need to keep new puppies away from places like dog parks and pet events where they could come in contact with unvaccinated animals,” Animal Control Director Kaye Dickson said. “All dogs should be vaccinated against Parvo. Most vets administer a combination vaccine that will protect against Parvo and other infectious diseases.” If you find a stray dog, Dickson advises to keep the

stray separated from your other pets until its owner is found or until you are sure it is not sick. Examination by a veterinarian is the only way to be certain of a Parvo diagnosis but there are some tell-tale signs. Parvo virus causes a variety of symptoms but one fairly reliable indicator is extremely pungent and sometimes bloody diarrhea. Dogs actually shed the virus in their stool even weeks after coming in contact with the infection. Dogs may exhibit unusual posture, be lethargic and dehydrated, have a fever and/or vomiting. FLORENCE, Ariz. – The Pinal County Sheriff’s Of-fice received an award this week from the Department of Defense–Defense Logis-tics Agency for “Superior Achievement in Fiscal Stew-ardship. PCSO has been an active partner of the United States Military Defense Logistics Agency, “1033 Program” since August of 2010. Since that time period, our office has acquired over $7,000,000.00 worth of surplus and demili-tarized equipment. According to the Department of Defense and Logistics the cost sav-ings to tax payers alone in Pinal County during 2011 was $3,792,425.04. Additionally during 2011, members of the Department of Defense came to Pinal County to conduct a yearly “Program Compliance Re-view.” After the review was completed, DOD personnel filmed a training video which is being created to demon-strate how law enforcement agencies can make maximum utilization of this highly ben-eficial program. Tom Gaupel, who coordinates the program for the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, was named as the as-sistant state 1033 program coordinator last year as well. The equipment PCSO has obtained through this incred-ible program is not only used by members of our office, but also by other departments and first responders in Pinal County who support our public safety operations. We have allowed other law en-forcement agencies to use the equipment we have obtained during times of need such as the 2011 Monument fire and Wallow fire. Some of the equipment we have obtained for our office to use for law enforcement operations include: Humvees, Casspir armored vehicle, semi-trucks, five-ton rescue trucks, tow truck, travel trailer, dump truck, tractors, front-end loader, blazers, fuel truck, bus, water truck, night vision equipment, thermal imaging equipment, ballistic shields, binoculars, back-packs, emergency blankets,

PCSO receives fiscal stewardship award from Department of Defensecomputer equipment, medical kits, tools, helicopter, helicop-ter engines, bomb robots, gen-erators, blankets and sheets (for inmates), jail kitchen equipment and cameras. PCSO has also loaned medical equipment we have acquired to San Manuel Fire, Mammoth Fire, Casa Grande Regional Fire, Casa Grande

Fire, Kearny Fire, Oracle Fire, Queen Valley Fire and South West Ambulance. The equipment has included a fire truck, five-ton rescue trucks, defibrillators, pulse Oxim-eters, Humvees and breathing apparatuses. Sheriff Paul Babeu stated, “The equipment we have obtained from the military

through the 1033 program has assisted public safety and law enforcement operations in Pinal County beyond com-parison. The equipment has

allowed our office to continue to improve our operations during these tough economic times. The fact we have the ability to loan the equipment

to other first responders who are not able to afford to pur-chase it otherwise improves public safety for our member and the public in general.”

FLORENCE – Who decides which roads get paved? How do I find out the air quality forecast for my neighborhood? Why are there codes for private property? What can I do to make my community safer? Those types of questions and more will be answered at Pinal County community meetings that are held around the county. One took place last month and there will be two more for the first half of this year. The purpose of these community meetings is to give residents a chance to learn more about county services by interacting with staff from Public Works, Air Quality, Planning and Development, and the Sheriff’s Office. Each gathering will be conducted in an open house format so residents can

arrive any time during the designated hours to meet with county staff. The community meetings will take place from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Pinal County Public Works Maintenance Facilities on: • Thursday, May 24th, 305 E. Superstition Boulevard in Apache Junction• Thursday, June 28th, 1410 N. Justice Drive in Oracle The meetings will be held in the district’s public works buildings so that residents can tour the maintenance facilities and learn more about road work activities in their community. Giveaway drawings will be held at 5 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. For more information, contact: Kathy Borquez at (520) 866-6406 or e-mail at: [email protected].

be fatal. Young animals seem to be at greatest risk but dogs of any age can be affected. “Parvo is hard to kill because most household cleaners are not effective against the virus,” Dickson said. “One half cup of bleach per gallon of water can be applied to anything that the dog touched, walked on, played with or may have had contact with fecal matter. Because the virus can live so long, you really have to be spraying down and cleaning constantly. The best solution is prevention and vaccination.” The normal vaccination interval for puppies is at six, nine and 12 weeks. Puppies should not be socialized with other dogs at parks or events for at least two weeks after the last vaccination. “We think the increase we’re seeing is because it is

breeding season and people may be spending more time outdoors with their pets,” Dickson said. “We need people to be aware that this is an extremely contagious disease in canines – coyotes are probably susceptible, too. Maybe that’s why we see it in the stray population.” Whatever the case, Dickson says Parvo infection is not a death sentence. “We are seeing a big jump in suspected cases. This requires heightened attention from the public, veterinary community and Animal Control workers.” Pinal County Animal Care and Control operates a combination shelter and adoption center at 1150 South Eleven Mile Corner Road in Casa Grande. Shelter hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Animal Control has dogs and cats of all ages and breeds for adoption. Pets available for adoption are listed on www.petharbor.com.

1,791,700 warrants, held by RK Mine Finance Trust I with an exercise price of C$3.90, by one year to April 22, 2014.Rio Tinto – Rio Tinto sets out track record as Olympics medals provider Rio Tinto today set out its ethical track record to support its role as the official metal provider for the 4,700 medals for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The metal is being sourced from Rio Tinto’s Kennecott Utah Copper mine in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA and its Oyu Tolgoi mine in Mongolia, which goes into commercial production in 2013. Rio Tinto chief executive Tom Albanese said, “Being ethically responsible is a thread that runs through everything we do. We aim to bring long-lasting positive change to the communities where we work, respecting human rights, bringing economic benefits and looking after the environment. “The metals and minerals we produce go to make things we use every day, and that help contribute to higher living standards, from medicine and soap to housing and mobile

phones. “We have rigorous standards for air quality, ecosystems, biodiversity, climate change, the use of energy, land and water and waste disposal. Before we even open a mine we plan for its closure and how to restore the land. “We support London 2012’s commitment to delivering the most sustainable games ever. It aligns with Rio Tinto’s commitment to sustainable development wherever we operate.” In Salt Lake City, Rio Tinto operates strictly within the parameters of its air permits and complies with federal and state air quality regulations, which are based on rigorous standards for protecting human health. In Oyu Tolgoi, Rio Tinto has committed to zero impact on community water sources. The primary water source for Oyu Tolgoi is the Gunii Hooloi aquifer - a deep, non-drinkable water source that is separate from the shallow water sources used by households and animals. Oyu Tolgoi is only allowed to use approximately 20 percent of the water from Gunii Hooloi, so the aquifer can never be exhausted.
