Editor, Copper Basin News: Hello, my name is Robert Garrett Brisbin, but most of you know me as Bobby, or as that little kid that used to sell you fundraising material, knickknacks or the newspaper.

I am a long-time resident of this community, since third grade, and a native Arizonan, which has given me an insight view to the needs of Kearny. A graduate from Ray High School in 2000, then I went to Central Arizona College and

received degrees in an AA and AGS in 2003, then received a BS degree in Public Relations and Electronic Media Broadcast Journalism from Northern Arizona University in 2006. Hopefully this education will give me the

Editor, Copper Basin News: I would like to remind voters to make it to the polls on March 13. IAM and AW LL 519 have endorsed

Sheila Stephenson and Rudy Flores for Kearny Town Council. All elections are very important. We need to get the right people in

office that will support our communities. Sincerely,/s/ Jon RamseyIAM & AW LL 519

Letter to the Editor: Unions back Stephenson, Flores for Kearny Council

Letter to Editor: Brisbin runs for Town Councilknowledge to improve our community. As a long-time citizen of this community, I have been involved in numerous community projects and organizations through my time here and I will continue to serve and do more. Being a civic minded and concerned citizen, I have involved myself in several organizations like the Kearny Volunteer Fire Department, Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce, Copper Basin Economic Development Coalition, Friends of the Library, Ray-Winkelman Masonic Lodge #24, and Adelante Juntos Coalition,

just to name a few. I hope to continue with these groups and much more to make our community enjoyable, safe and growing. I’ve received honors within this community that have helped point me in the right direction for our future. That include being nominated twice for Citizen of the Year, Eagle Scout, Volunteer Award from Chamber of Commerce, and Honorary Senior Citizen Member, to name a few. I do have outside experience and honors, as well, to bring new aspects to our community. The key to community growth is being open minded to change, especially within

our community. As a member of the Town Council there will be a “Help Me, Help You” policy, meaning that I will be open to all ideas, suggestions, opinions, and criticism. If you need something looked up involving our community or something that could help our community, I will be willing to research and find out what can be done, to the best of my ability. If you would like to reach me you can leave a message at (520) 363-5472 or by email at [email protected] Thank you for your support. I hope to serve you. Remember, a vote for me on the 13th is a vote for you!/s/ Robert Brisbin

Editor: Arizona working families are under attack. Last week, the Republican-controlled State Senate passed several bills in an effort to destroy public unions. One bill would ban the practice of “release time,” by which government employees are paid to do union work, including firefighters and police officers, who may be called on by the government in the case of a disaster. Another bill, would make it

illegal for union dues to be automatically deducted from workers paychecks, making it more difficult for unions to receive funding. These efforts are backed by Americans for Prosperity, a group supported by billionaire brothers David and Charles Koch, who called for its supporters to pressure lawmakers to pass the reforms, including the most damaging bill, SB 1485 – which would prohibit collective bargaining by all governments in

Arizona. Without collective bargaining, unions that represent teachers, police officers, and firefighters would cease to exist. Once again, the Republican Party has proved to be a big tent. A big tent for billionaires and big business. As a Steelworker, I have benefited from collective bargaining for better wages, healthcare for my family, and pension benefits. These are not luxuries. Teachers, police officers, and firefighters –

Editor: It’s time we take a step back and look at the overall picture of what has transpired over the past three years Sheriff Paul Babeu has been running the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office. This is a person who

came into office talking about “cleaning up” the office and making it “transparent.” All evidence points to the contrary. In three years, we have seen the office used for everything at the expense of law enforcement.

Some law enforcement personnel of our county have been used as a de-facto public relations machine for the Sheriff’s self promotion. It’s time this comes to an end. How many more deputies will be placed on indefinite paid

Editor, Copper Basin News: I am Bradley Richards, a new medical provider at the Kearny Clinic, and I moved to Kearny in April 2011. After a warm welcome from the community here, I have wanted nothing more than to reach out to the community and see if I can be a bigger part of improving Kearny in any way possible. Although I have never had a political position before, I have served in leadership roles

in athletics, religion, and scouting. I come from a diverse background, having lived in upstate New York, rural and suburban Utah, Oregon, Belgium, and France. With my background, education, and outside perspective, I feel I could be a perfect addition to the town council of Kearny. I am one of five children, having four sisters and being the fourth child. I am an Eagle Scout, I have a Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant studies

from Pacific University in Oregon. I received a Bachelor of Science degree from Weber State University, and was an honors graduate in both disciplines. I was an academic All-American in college having played volleyball and was the president of the team for three of the four years that I played. I have a beautiful wife and two young children, a four year old daughter and 21 month old son. I love my family, I love my

work, I have a passion for medicine, and I love God and try to live my life in a way that would please Him. I am an individual that prides myself on honesty, both in the home and in my work and leisure activity. I am a person who cares about others and is willing to listen to all sides of a discussion before taking a position. I support and care for the environment and what nature has to offer; Kearny being a town that has a

golf course, lake, and other important environmental facets that make this little town so unique. I have a strong desire to promote growth here and keep residents and families here in Kearny, and will work to sustain goals and activities to encourage this. I believe ethical practice and in social justice as our country was founded on similar principles. I have a strong belief in serving the community and making the citizens have a

voice in what is done with their community. I believe in this small community and in striving to keep it a great place to live, and creating a town that people will continue to be proud of. I was raised on hard work, discipline, and dedication to everything you are involved in. I would be proud and privileged to be considered to be a part of the Town Council in Kearny, and hope you will consider me for this position./s/ Bradley Richards

those who educate and protect our children deserve better. In spite of these developments at the State Capitol, I am hopeful that Arizona unions and working families will stand strong in the face of Republican and billionaire efforts to destroy us. Why? Because similar anti-union laws and their supporters have been rejected by voters throughout the country. Last year, Ohio voters repealed a new law, nearly 2-1, that would have limited the bargaining rights of teachers and other state employees. After Wisconsin passed similar laws, two state senators lost their seats and Republican Governor Scott Walker currently faces a recall. If supporters of SB 1485 want a fight at the ballot box, then so be it. Next, it will be Arizona’s turn to stand up for working families. I am confident working families will win./s/ Ernest BustamanteSteelworker & Former Arizona State Representative, LD 23Mammoth

LetterContinued from Page 3

Letter to the Editor: New medical provider running for Kearny Council

Letter to the Editor: Babeu, it’s time to resignadministrative leave for minor or no infractions? How many more lawsuits will the county be subject to due to his lack of oversight on the jail? How many more rape kits will fail to be processed on a timely basis? Other law enforcement agencies across the state use RICO funds to prevent crime. What has RICO paid for in Pinal County? Brand new centennial badges that will be worn for a limited time. Military coins, trips, thousands in Arizona Diamondback tickets and coffee mugs. These are hardly preventative measures for criminal activity – but great PR materials for the sheriff. In one of the worst

economic downturns in our nation since the 1930s, the office under Sheriff Babeu’s leadership had the temerity to take 25 of his personnel on

a week-long, $53,000 junket to St. Louis to witness the boss receiving an award. At the same time, he comes to the Board claiming he needs more and more money to fight crime. For the second fiscal year in a row he is on course to overspend his budget. This disconnect is troubling. His latest scandal is another “brick in the wall” when it comes to questionable judgments by this Sheriff. It is time Sheriff Babeu open up his eyes and see the damage he has done to the office and the dedicated staff he has under his command. It’s time for the Sheriff to consider the best option and that is to resign immediately so the people of Pinal County can have a law enforcement leader that cares about enforcing the law, not constant campaigning and more

recently, doing personal damage control./s/ Pete RiosChair, Pinal County Board of Supervisors

Compiled by Mila Lira The price of Copper settled at $3.86 a pound at the close of business on Monday night. This price has remained steady over the past couple of weeks. Resolution Copper Resolution Copper continues to move forward with their mine feasibility plan and construction of the number nine and ten shafts. Mine offi cials expect to have a mine plan of operations complete early in the second quarter of 2012. As of this week crews working to construct the Number 10 shaft are 5202 feet below the earth’s surface. The rehabilitation of the Number Nine shaft is currently at the 2660 level. Resolution Copper has also introduced a bill into the Arizona State Legislature to allow for miners to work underground for up to 12 hours per day. At this time Arizona State law only allows for underground miners to work underground for eight hours per day. This bill is currently under review. Resolution Copper is also a premier sponsor of the 24th Annual Apache Leap Mining Festival this weekend. Several regional mining companies and contractors will be having demonstrations booths during the festival.

Curis – Florence Copper Curis has announced that they are hiring for a Senior Project Engineer. For more information on this position visit their website at: http://www.fl orencecopper.com.Rosemont Copper Augusta Resource Corporation provided an update on the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) regarding review from the regional Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its Rosemont Copper project. The San Francisco Environmental Protection Agency offi ce is the fi nal agency to submit comments to the USFS on the draft EIS, joining the 25,000 comments of which approximately 10,000 have been characterized as form letters or duplicates by the USFS. The EPA review was provided approximately 30 days past the offi cial close of the public comment period, due to a request from the EPA to the USFS for additional time. The receipt of these comments now allows the USFS to complete its response to comments, and a fi nal EIS for the Rosemont Copper project along with the Record of Decision. “This is a standard part

Mining Reportof what a regional EPA offi ce does,” said Rod Pace, Rosemont Copper’s president and CEO. “It’s part of the rigorous review process that leads to a robust fi nal EIS required by the National Environmental Policy Act.” The next steps for Rosemont Copper will be to fi nalize the air and aquifer protection permits by the State of Arizona, complete the Fish and Wildlife Service consultation process and develop the draft mitigation plans for species protection, mine reclamation and site closure. Much of the technical and analytical work to complete these next steps has already been completed and peer-reviewed, including hydrology studies and air modeling for the project site. The peer-review process has been on-going for more than two years. “Our leadership has always understood that our project would receive the highest scrutiny from all local state and federal agencies,” Mr. Pace added. “We want to build a mine, using the latest technologies and highest standards for conservation and protection of air and water resources. The extensive review of the draft EIS by the EPA, as well as all of the other commenting agencies, produces the input needed by the USFS to produce the most defendable fi nal decision documentation possible.” In addition to the fi nal comments on the draft EIS, the EPA is continuing its role to provide comment on the ACOE’s 404 permit application for Rosemont Copper. The EPA has submitted a 3b letter, which was issued last week, allowing the EPA to preserve their position for future discussions and negotiations as the fi nal Section 404 permit documentation is drafted. The Rosemont team is committed to work with the USFS, ACOE and EPA to ensure that all questions are answered fully and successfully and that the project meets all standards addressed by the more than 300 studies and technical reports conducted over the past six years.

By Doug Hamilton In May of 1903, crews were pushing construction of the Phoenix and Eastern railroad eastward along the Gila River from Florence. They were anxious to lay track as rapidly as possible so the line could begin service. Now their progress was being slowed because an obstacle lay in their path. About 15 miles east of Florence, the Gila passed between North Butte and South Butte, making a double horseshoe bend. Unfortunately, the topography at the east bend prevented laying of track on either side of the river, so a tunnel was required. You can imagine the diffi culty of carving a tunnel more than 500 feet long through the cliffs, using 1903 technology. Construction crews had to blast and remove many tons of rock.

On May 11, 1903, Foreman P.S. Bagwell, assisted by Miguel Para, was tamping powder in a hole in the rock wall, preparing to blast,. The Florence Blade and Tribune reported what happened next:FLORENCE BLADE AND TRIBUNESaturday, May 16, 1903Blown to FragmentsThe Use of a Steel Tamping Bar Caused Fatal Explosion Railroad camp No. 2 at the Buttes, about 15 miles east of Florence, where the P. & E. company is driving its tunnel, was the scene of a premature explosion of giant powder last Monday [May 11] afternoon, which resulted

in the death of two men. P.S. Bagwell, foreman of the rock gang, recently from Poland, Yavapai county, and Miguel Para, a Mexican, were the victims. A round of holes had been drilled and the men proceeded to load them, using a steel bar for a tamping rod. The supposition is that the steel coming in contact with the rock, which is of fl inty nature, produced a spark that ignited the powder. The men were literally blown to fragments, and the remains of the two so mixed that no attempt was made to separate them. A number of men working in the immediate vicinity of where the explosion happened, were, a few minutes previously, sent to some other point on the works, thus averting what otherwise could have been a much greater loss of life. Coroner Devine went to the scene of the accident and held an inquest. The verdict of the jury was that the men came to their death through carelessness. How could this have happened? The article implies that the rest of the crew had been sent away for safety. Why did Bagwell then ignore rudimentary safety concerns for himself and Para? Even a lay person unfamiliar with railroad construction would question the wisdom of using a steel rod instead of a wooden one to tamp a huge charge of blasting powder. Veteran railroad men

Tragedy on the P&E Line

Rails

& Trails

probably saw this as a déjà vu incident, because a nearly identical one happened in 1848, subsequently becoming famous in both railroad and medical lore. This was the “American Crowbar Case,” in which 25-year-old Phineas Gage, a railroad construction foreman in Vermont was tamping powder in a hole with an iron bar 1 ¼” in diameter and 3’7” long. The powder exploded, driving the 13 ¼ lb. bar into the side of Gage’s face, then behind his left eye and out the top of his head. Miraculously, Gage survived and lived until 1860. He was able to hold various jobs, but his personality was adversely affected – hardly surprising given the amount of brain damage he had sustained. It is interesting that both Bagwell and Gage were foremen; both should have been well aware of the dangers of using a steel rod. With minimum delay, construction on the P & E continued, and by July 10, 1904, 28 miles of track was opened between Florence and Ray Junction. By Nolberto Waddell The Hayden Lady Lobo softball team traveled to Safford High School over the week-end to participate in the 2012 Safford Softball Invitational. The tournament was a pool play-bracket tournament with eight teams participating. Hayden was in the pool with Thatcher High School, Miami High School and Safford High School. The games had a one hour time limit in pool play. The Lady Lobo’s first game was against the Lady Eagles of Thatcher. Demitria Boltarez was in the pitching circle and she turned in a very good effort holding the Eagle offense to no runs. The

Hayden defense turned in a good game behind Boltarez and the Lobo bats were just as good. The final score was 11 to 0. Boltarez took the pitching win tossing a one-hitter at the Eagles striking out five and walking one batter. The Lobo hitting was led by Yvonnah Gonzales with two doubles in two trips to the plate, scored two runs and had one RBI. Melissa Islava had two hits in three at-bats, scored two runs and had one RBI. Devon Estrada had a two RBI double in two at bats and walked once. Lainey Lopez had a triple and scored a run in three at bats. The Lobo team remained

Lady Lobos place third at Safford Tournamenthot in their next pool game against the Lady Vandals of Miami High School defeating them with a 14 to 3 score. Boltarez started in the pitching circle for the Lobos, giving up three runs on two hits striking out four Lady Vandals and walked two. Marlisse Perez came in to pitch the final inning holding the Vandals scoreless striking out two and gave up one hit. The Lady Lobo bats were hot again roughing up three Vandal pitchers for 14 runs on six hits and took advantage of seven walks and three hit batters. Devon Estrada led Lobo bats with two hits in two at bats, scored three runs, had an RBI and walked once. Kyana Garcia had a hit in two at bats for three RBI and scored a run. Lainey Lopez had two RBI going one for two in the batter’s box, scored a run and walked once. Marlisse Perez also had two RBI with a hit in two at bats and scored a run. Stephanie Chiquete had a hit in one official at bat for an RBI and got hit by a pitch twice. The Lobos’ good luck ran out in their game against the Safford Lady Bulldogs and their hard throwing pitcher. The Lady Lobos were held scoreless by the Bulldogs pitcher only able to get three hits, a single by Melissa Islava, an infield hit by Kyana Garcia and a double from Devon Estrada. Demitria Boltarez was roughed up by the Bulldog bats getting to Boltarez for 11 runs on seven hits and took advantage of seven Lobo errors for the 0

to 11 win. Boltarez struck out three, walked three and hit one batter in the loss. The Lady Lobos finished with a two win against one loss in pool play giving them the number two seed from their pool for Saturday’s bracket play and were scheduled to play the number three seed from the other pool. The number three seed turned out to be the Globe High School Lady Tigers. Marlisse Perez was in the pitching circle for the Lady Lobos in the game against the Lady Tigers turning in a very good effort for the Lobos in the 9 to 4 win. Perez put down the Tigers in order in the top of the first inning. The Lady Lobos scored two runs in the bottom of the first; with two outs the Lady Lobos loaded the bases on a fielder’s choice, a walk and a hit by Chiquete. Mary Lechuga came up hitting the ball up the middle for a two RBI singles. The inning ended on a ground out. Marlisse gave up a hit after two outs in the top of the second but the Tigers could not bring her around when Perez struck out the next batter. The Lobos went down in order in the bottom of the second. The Tigers got to Perez in the top of the third getting four runs on two hits, two walks and an error to take a 2 to 4 lead. The Lobos tied the game in the bottom of the third scoring two runs on hit by Lainey Lopez who scored on a long double by Melissa

Islava who reached third base on the throw in from the outfield. Islava scored on a long sacrifice fly by Devon Estrada to tie the game at four apiece. Perez put down the Tigers in order in the top of the fourth. The Lady Lobos put the game away in the bottom of the fourth. Melinda Marinez started the inning with a walk, after an out; Lainey Lopez’s triple scored Marinez, hits by Perez, Islava and Estrada scored three runs and Estrada scored the fifth run of the inning on Mary Lechuga’s third hit of the game before the inning ended. Marlisse put down the Tigers in the top of the fifth and took the win when the umpires called the game on the time limit. Marlisse Perez took the pitching win tossing five innings giving up four runs, struck out five and walked one. Mary Lechuga had the hot bat for the Lobos getting two singles and a double for three RBI in three at bats. Lainey Lopez had a single and a triple in three at bats for one RBI, Marlisse Perez had two singles for an RBI in three trips to the plate and Melissa Islava had a single and a double for an RBI in three at bats. Devon Estrada had one hit in one official at bat, was walked once and had the RBI sacrifice fly. Stephanie Chiquete and Kyana Garcia each had one hit in three at bats. The win had the Lobo going

up against the Safford team in the next game. The game was all Bulldogs as one of the top pitchers in Division III, Aundria Zuniga-Romero, tossed almost a perfect game against the Lobos only allowing one Lobo batter on base for the entire game. It was 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3 for six innings until the top of the seventh inning when Lainey Lopez worked Zuniga-Romero for a walk for the only Lobo base runner of the game. Zuniga-Romero hit a two RBI homerun over the left field fence in the bottom of the sixth inning. Demitria Boltarez took the loss for the Lobos giving up seven runs on 11 hits, struck out one and walked none, but eight Lobo errors did not help her. The loss ended tournament play for the Lady Lobos giving them a third place finish in the 2012 Safford Invitational Softball Tournament. Devon Estrada was chosen to the all-tournament team for her hitting and good play at the catching position. The Lady Lobos have three games scheduled this week traveling to San Carlos yesterday to take on the Lady Braves. The Lady Lobos will be on the road again on Thursday, March 8, traveling to Superior High School for a game against the Lady Panthers and will take on the Lady Bearcats from Ray High School in a home game on Friday, March 9.

By Nolberto Waddell The Hayden High School Lobo baseball team started their season on a high note taking on and defeating the number one ranked team in Division III, the Estrella Foothills Wolves, in the first game of the Joe S. Padilla Baseball Tournament at Florence High School. Matthew Manriquez took

the mound for the Lobos against the Wolves and after getting roughed up in the first two innings, settled down to hold the vaunted Wolves hitters until the Lobo bats would come alive. The Wolves got to Manriquez for seven runs in the first two innings while holding the Lobo offense to one run. Things started to get

better for the Lobos in the third inning scoring three runs on three hits and a couple of walks to make the score 4 to 7. Manriquez found his stride and held the Wolves scoreless in the third, fourth and fifth innings. The Lobos after going down in order in the fourth inning came alive in the fifth scoring 10 runs

The Ray High School softball team opened the season with two road games traveling to Miami on Feb. 23 for a season opening 3-8 loss against the Vandals and traveled to Globe on Feb. 27 to earn a 23-10 victory against the Tigers. In the opener against Miami, the Bearcats had a rough first inning committing three errors in a five-run first for the Vandals. Ray closed the margin to 5-3 in the top of

the third as Annie Hinojos, Lucy Sainz and Leah Wallace all had RBI hits for the ‘Cats. The Vandals added three more runs in the sixth en route to the 8-3 win. Hinojos went the distance on the mound for the ‘Cats allowing only three earned runs while striking out eight Vandals. Hinojos led the Bearcats at the plate going 2 for 4 including an RBI double in the three-run third inning. At Globe, the Bearcats

fought off another rough first inning as the Tigers jumped out to an 8-0 lead against starting pitcher Angela Fuentes. Although Fuentes struggled a little with her control, the Bearcat fielders did not provide the defensive support expected as the wind played havoc with the defense during the first inning. Annie Hinojos came on in relief for Fuentes to end the inning. The Bearcats adjusted to the

adverse weather elements (wind, rain, and cold) that worsened as the game progressed to stage a great comeback. In the top of the third the ‘Cats erupted for four runs on four consecutive hits by Maria Lopez, Fuentes, Hinojos and Ashley Meza. The ‘Cats however were not done with their hit parade as Fuentes started the offensive explosion with a double in the top of the fourth. Hinojos singled to score Fuentes, and Meza

doubled her in with a shot to the left centerfield gap. Taeler Harmon was hit by a pitch and catcher Josette Kimmel followed with a two-run triple to the gap and scored on a Tiger error. The Bearcats followed up with nine more runs in the fifth and four more runs in the sixth, capped off by a Kimmel two-run homer to left center. The Bearcats totaled 23 runs on 15 hits in the contest. Hinojos evened her record to 1-1 by

limiting Globe to two runs the rest of the way while striking out three Tigers. The Bearcat softball team faced Miami again on March 6 in Kearny and entertains San Manuel at home on March 8 then travels to meet Hayden on Friday, March 9. Game times for the San Manuel game in Kearny is at 2 p.m. followed by the JV game at 4. At Hayden the varsity will play the late 4 p.m. contest and the JV the early game at 2 p.m.

Ray High softball splits games during opening week

The Ray Junior High Baseball and Softball teams under the direction of Matt Roseberry and Rikki Galka respectively, were impressive in their season openers last Wednesday in Oracle as the baseball team used a nine-run first inning on their way to a 11-2 romp over MountainVista while

the Lady ‘Cat Softball team used a four-run sixth inning to break open a close game en route to a 9-5 victory over the Mountain Vista Cougars. The softball team got a 12-strikeout performance from pitcher Stormee Galka and the team collected nine hits in the opener as Sarah

Duncklee, Alyssa Sotelo and Galka each had a pair of hits. Dannell West, Taylor Ashby and Savannah Willis contributed with one hit in the game. Duncklee led the ‘Cats with three runs scored. The junior high diamond men exhibited good patience at the plate as

Mountain Vista’s starting pitcher struggled with his command early by issuing five walks in the opening frame. Several Bearcat hitters including Jordan Pace, who led the ‘Cats at the plate going 3 for 3 on the afternoon, had productive days. Adonis Klockenga, Brady Bray, Austin Collings,

Jonathan Wernett and Austin Huffman all contributed with one hit at the plate. Klockenga also opened the season on the mound for the ‘Cats going four strong innings while striking out five. Kenneth Palmer came in during the fifth inning and closed the door on the Cougars by pitching a

scoreless fifth. The game was called due to the 10-run rule in effect. Bearcat teams were back in action this week taking on the Globe Tigers Monday and the Miami Vandals today. Game time is 4 p.m. and all games are played at the high school fields.

By Rosalind Padilla The Women’s Expo this weekend is a great chance for women in the Copper Basin to connect, greet local business women and have a great time. The event starts at 11 a.m. with speakers every thirty minutes until 4 p.m. when the Pioneer Days Queen fashion show and speech contest begins. In between each Expo speaker there will be drawings. There are 20 booths confirmed with Hayden Winkelman Little League selling food all day. Check the ad in this paper for times and names. This event is sponsored by Gordon’s IGA, ASARCO, Resolution Copper, Trendz and Hayden Winkelman School District.Pioneer Days Pioneer Days is just around the corner, March 29-April 1, following the theme “Rails and Trails, Celebrating Arizona’s 100 Years.” Popular every year is the T- shirts which are

available by preorder only. The shirts this year are grey and the design is of a Copper Basin Railway locomotive, photos of local trails and an Arizona flag. Deadline for the T-shirt orders is Friday, March 16 – No Exceptions. Check for signs on Alden, in Hayden and Winkelman indicating that the Carnival pre-sale tickets and or bracelets are in. We have not received them yet and do not know the prices. Disregard the notice about the airplane rides, our contact is in the Naval Reserves and was called to serve on a destroyer in the Pacific. We will arrange for him to attend another event this year. Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe If you arrived in the Copper Basin after the 1960s, you may not know that there was more than ore cars and copper smelting by-products moving along the tracks we see daily and along tracks the have long

since been torn up. The Atchison, Topeka, and the Santa Fe Railway, a subsidiary Phoenix and Eastern Railway, constructed a railway line named the Magma-Winkelman line in 1902 to 1904. Magma refers to the mining operation in the town of Magma near Superior. The railway tracks you cross at Queen Valley are part of that line. There are switching rails at Florence that sent trains to Superior and the other towards Winkelman. It took a while for me to understand the names on the route which has always intrigued me since I began writing history of this area. The routes are named after mountain peaks, washes, possibly prospectors and ranchers and follows stage coach, wagon and horse trails and most importantly the Gila River. Are you aware that there are three tunnels along the route? Tunnel one is over 630

feet in length and is the second longest in Arizona; near Price Cochran and Wooly, listed as 19.2 miles from Florence. If a passenger train was to ever become a reality again, great stories could be told at each of these 20 points. At Ray Junction there are switching stations which direct ore cars to the Ray mine. Beyond Ray Junction heading to Winkelman there are two more tunnels, then past the Kearny crossing at Tilbury there is a spot by the Kearny Golf Course called Branaman. It is intriguing because people say they have heard old timers make reference to the name. Hayden Junction was another switching station with a round house and was a thriving town with houses on both sides of the tracks. Foundations are still visible except for those that got demolished when the tailings slid to the edge of the existing tracks. Hayden Junction was the

operational center for Southern Pacific until the system was rebuilt to have ore trains go directly from Ray to Hayden for unloading onto a new conveyor system. There is a spur that went to the Kennecott Mill and smelter which are still standing; now it goes to the ASARCO mill and smelter. Another line is the San Manuel Railroad Junction which ran to San Manuel and Mammoth mine from Hayden Junction. Before the crusher ever existed there was a regular train depot at the bottom of Velasco Drive in Hayden with the old dirt road from Ray to Hayden running in front of it and heading towards what is now the Hayden Golf Course. Winkelman was another thriving town with the railway ending there. Original plans were to continue the line to Benson which never materialized. The track at Winkelman was extended 6.35 miles to Christmas in 1911 by

the Arizona Eastern Railway. The road that we know as Highway 177 ended before the Mini Mart and overlooked the Winkelman Flats and the railway line to Christmas. That section of track was abandoned by Southern Pacific in 1961 and later filled in to make Highway 77 The original track to Winkelman still exists. If you drive along the Hayden Golf Course road look up and you can see the tracks, one with abandoned train cars. There is a spur which includes two loading docks. The loading ramps are still in place one was for loading gypsum and the other for loading cattle, visible from Randal and First Streets. The gypsum loading dock is behind the old Shell station and Slater’s NAPA store. The local railroad line has had several owners since 1902 and is currently owned by ASARCO.

Women’s Expo, Pioneer Days and a little history too

By Georgie Wood([email protected]) I previously wrote some about James W. Brandenburg and his wife, Caldonia “Callie” Ann Brandenburg, who had settled in 1888 along western Aravaipa Creek in Pinal County, Arizona, and who Brandenburg Mountain was named after. Callie Brandenburg had been born in Arkansas in 1853, and her recollections of her life up to 1915 were compiled in 1982 by her granddaughter Eve Brandenburg Acuff. I felt very honored to have received copies of the memoirs of each Callie and her daughter, Annie Elizabeth, from Annie’s son, Alvin Forbach, who lives in Cottonwood, Arizona and is a delight to talk to. This article covers some of Callie’s recollections about her earlier years through approximately 1867 when

she was fourteen years old. Callie was the third of eight children born to her mother, Sara Borden, and Callie’s first duty was to take care of a younger baby brother when Callie was only twenty months old. She and that brother were the only ones of their family who didn’t get typhoid fever in 1856, and a nine month-old sister had died of the fever in 1857. Callie’s family had much work to do, and Callie had to wash dishes, carry water from the spring, care for the little children, help “ma”, and was never idle. Callie’s father, Archibald Borden, had joined the Confederate Army after the Civil War started in 1861, so he wasn’t home often. Both Yankees and Rebels came to their area, and the family was forced to hide several times. Their stock and other property was destroyed, including their

home by fire. Callie said the Yankees sometimes did mean things just to aggravate, but she never knew a Yankee to touch a Rebel woman or a child, and “we were pretty sassy to them at times”. When the war was over in 1865, the ministers came home and they commenced to preach again, but because most of the churches had been burned, the men got together and made brush arbors to preach under, and there were big logs to sit on. There also was school with school tuition that kept getting more expensive, from a dollar and fifty cents a month to three dollars a month for each pupil, and the school term was for six months. They also had to pay for their books and supplies. The family had to make all their clothes by spinning and weaving; shoes were made after a leather process; ink, soap, and sourdough wheat bread was made; and table

salt had been obtained from a process after obtaining salty dirt from old meat houses. Of the Ku Klux Klan that originated after slavery was abolished and the Civil War was over in 1865, Callie was told that the KKK set example by “whipping the negroes with a horse whip; that it was better than killing them because it kept the fear alive”. She didn’t mention if her parents owned slaves or not, so I am wondering if they might have been among the many small-holding Southern farmers who had few slaves, or none. She did mention that an uncle had paid a thousand dollars each for some young slaves before the war, then after taking his slaves to Texas during the war, he had brought them back to free them. But, because four of the slaves wanted to stay with the uncle, he kept them “on hire”, paid them fifty cants

The Pinal County Sheriff’s Report is taken from the daily logs, based on the information provided by deputies. All persons arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Feb. 27 Theft of a wallet was reported in the 6000 block of North Highway 77, Dudleyville. Feb. 28 Theft of a Honda quad and trailer was reported in the 63000 block of East Tristan Road, Kearny. Feb. 28 Burglary was reported between milepost 151 and 153 on Highway 177 near the Ray Mine, Kearny. An unknown person cut through the mine’s fence to steal copper. Feb. 28 Domingo Gutierrez Gonzales, 62, Claypool, was arrested near the Ray Mine, Kearny, and was charged with criminal trespass, burglary and possession of burglary tools. He was transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail in Florence. Feb. 29 Burglary was reported in the 22000 block of North Mienta Avenue, Kearny.

The New and Exciting!

“More than just a church – We are FAMILY”Kearny SBC

on 10 hits and a walk to hand the Estrella Foothills team a 14 to 7 defeat. Matt Manriquez went the distance for the Lobos on the mound for the win. The score sheet was hard to decipher so individual accomplishments are hard to determine. After the win over Estrella Foothills the Lobos’ play went downhill. The Lobos went up against the Cougars of Show Low High School in their next game with Thomas Cabrera on the mound for the Lobos. Cabrera started out with a strikeout of the lead-off batter but things went downhill after that. Cabrera gave up four walks, a single and two doubles for five first inning runs and the Lobos could not recover. The Lobo bats were active in the first inning getting three hits but good throws from the Cougar outfield kept getting the Lobo base runners out. Cabrera got the Cougars in order in the second inning but the Lobos offense despite getting the first three batters of the second inning on could not bring them around for a score. Cabrera gave up a run in the third inning and three more in the fourth for a total of nine runs. The Lobo bats could never get untracked getting two base runners in the third but stranding them and finally got a run across the fourth inning losing the game 1 to 9.

Thomas Cabrera took the pitching loss giving up the nine runs. He struck out five Cougar batters but the four walks in the first inning were too much to overcome. The Lobo batters produced eight hits with Matthew Manriquez getting two singles in two at bats as did Adrian Ochoa with two hits. Erik Rivera, Thomas Cabrera, Roman Padilla and Rodney Ortiz each had one hit. The Lobos’ next game was against the Coyotes of Combs High School and the game turned into a rout by the Coyotes. The Coyotes ran up 12 runs on two Lobo pitchers while the Lobo bats failed to show up in the 0 to 12 loss. Adrian Ochoa was on the mound for the Lobos and he had a hard time against the Coyote batters finally giving way to Matthew Manriquez who had an equally hard time holding the Coyote batters at bay. Like it was mentioned, the Lobo bats never showed up getting only three Lobo base runners for the game. Thomas Cabrera was on base twice with a double and a walk and Erik Rivera got on with a walk but that was all the Lobo offense produced. Adrian Ochoa took the pitching loss. The final game of the tournament for the Lobos was against the Scouts of Window Rock High School and this game was a repeat of the Combs game. The pitching did not come through and the Lobo bats were a no-show. Roman Padilla started on

The Lobos responded with one run in the bottom of the first but it would be all they would get until the final inning, also producing one run for the final 2 to 10 score. Again the score sheet is hard to decipher for individual results. The tournament was not the success the coaches were expecting, but the young Lobo team gained much experience playing some tough opponents. This is a good hitting bunch of Lobos and the
