Children are always welcome in all our church services at St John's. In addition, at the 10:00am service there is Godly Play for children from three to twelve years, and our Crèche (unsupervised) where parents can take little ones if upset or restless while still following the service on the large TV screen.

FROM THE RECTOR 3 August 2014 Dear Friends, The several gospel accounts of the multiplication of the loaves witness to the importance which the early communities attach to this miracle, the only one in which Jesus directly associated his disciples. The apostles had come to the conclusion that Jesus alone could meet the needs of the crowds. Here they learn that they themselves have a role to play in the sharing of the Eucharistic bread. In commemorating the event, the Church sees in it the living announcement of the redemption, the prophetic sign of what would take place when, in her turn, she would be entrusted with the task of giving the human multitudes the Word and the Bread of Life. With every blessing, Fr Steven Salmon, Rector

PARISH NEWS Baptism Enrolments: At the 10:00am Family Eucharist, Gracie Gilchrist is to be enrolled for Holy Baptism. Please pray for Gracie as her family and godparents prepare for this Sacrament.

Music notes for today’s Family Eucharist: This week’s anthem is the Offertory for the Feast of St Stephen, ‘Elegerunt, Apostoli Stephanum' translated as 'The Apostles chose Stephen to be a Levite, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost: whom the Jews stoned, invoking and saying: Lord Jesus, receive my spirit, alleluia.’ The hymn Salve Regina is a Marian anthem sung at Compline, and is particularly appropriate for the liturgical season from Pentecost to Advent. Bach's 'Great' Prelude in C dates from the early eighteenth-century and was probably composed during Bach's tenure at Weimar.

Tasting Sweet Delights – a Girls’ Night In on Monday 4 August, 7:30pm in the Parish Centre for Caritas Members, Playtime Group Mums and other Ladies in the parish. All are most welcome to bring a friend also. This is a chance for fellowship with others you may never have met before, and to have some fun sharing your own special sweets, whether a yummy dessert or dessert wine of your choice. The speaker/entertainment is the surprise of the evening. We are looking forward to seeing you there. Please let Lynette Johnson (0408 254 125) or Barbara Emmett (9971 8428) know if coming and what delicious food or drinks you could bring, or call the office (9971 8694 Mon-Fri, 9:30am-2:00pm).

Organ Recital: On Saturday 9 August at 2:00pm Tom Edwards will present an enjoyable hour of works from great classical composers for organ, including Mendelssohn, Howells, Walton and Purcell. The recital will be followed by afternoon tea. For more information, please speak with Tom (0481 563 258) or Valda (9971 7997) after the 8:00 or 10:00am Sunday morning services.

Trivia Turmoil, Saturday 23 August – are you ready? St John’s Trivia Night is only three weeks away, which leaves precious little time to practise your quiz skills, unless you decide to recruit a well-informed support team, or just plan on coming to watch and join in a fun evening. Guests may come casual or you can organise a table-for-eight. Plus, you can plan on decorating your table and/or dressing up as a favourite character. A $10 per person donation will help meet costs; BYO food and drinks. If planning to come, please enter your name in the form on the lobby table, and state if you need transport. To book your place, please call Lynette Johnson (0408 254 125) or the parish office (9971 8694 Mon-Fri, 9:30am-2:00pm).

Happy Birthday: Margaret Turley (4th), Roger Soltau (5th), Michael Johnston (6th), Kay Thiel (7th), Rob Peterson (9th) Wedding Anniversary Congratulations to Verity and Matthew Pearce (7th) Memorial to David Coburn: Many will remember David Coburn who was organist here between 1991 and 2003. The Parish Council has agreed to dedicate a stop on the new organ to David's memory. The idea of enlarging the Pogson organ was David's dream many years ago. Any who wish to contribute to this memorial should speak with Lynette, or include an envelope marked “David Coburn Memorial” with their offering. Casseroles: Frozen meals are available to all in need, including parishioners who may be unwell or unable to get out. We are now starting to run a little low on stocks and would appreciate more meals. Please bear in mind that those who may be recovering from illness are not always able to take spicy food. For information, please speak with Robyn Couch or Lynette Johnson. Music, Music, Music: With new music events being planned for later this year, please watch this space as details emerge; come to the events if you can in order to enjoy the performances, encourage emerging musicians, help the different objectives being supported, and welcome visitors who see at St John’s a parish that is welcoming, hospitable and keen to share our lives of faith with others. For many years St John’s music program has brought into our church for the first time visitors who have experienced here the friendship of St John’s family. Please record your details in the subscriber’s list on the lobby table to receive advice on coming musical events; then plan to participate when you can in this outreach. For more information, you can speak with Valda Ashover (9971 7997), and please take flyers as they become available for family, friends and neighbours. Cottage Counselling operates regularly in the Parish Centre with support from St John’s. Please pray for the service, the counsellors and their resources, giving thanks for their work, and that this important ministry may continue meeting the needs of the local community. Cottage Counselling now has Deductible Gift Recipient status with the ATO and can provide receipts for tax deduction purposes to donors. The Centre may be contacted at 7 Clarke St, Narrabeen 2101, on 02 9972 0141 or at www.cottagecounselling.org.au Red Cross Blood Service: One in three Australians will need blood, but only one in thirty donates. Donated blood helps cancer patients, people with blood disorders, mothers-to-be and newborn babies, as well as trauma and surgical patients. The Mobile Blood Service is to be at Dee Why Surf Club this week on 18-21 August (12:30-7:00pm Mon-Tue, and 9:30am-4:00pm Wed-Thu). Please see the notice board in the lobby for information.
