Dog Park Adventures...The Etiquette Edition Dogs are mans best friend, and dog parks are the ultimate

playground. For those rough and tumble play sessions that arentappropriate at home, dog parks are the perfect escape for our caninefriends to run free, jump and play with other dogs.

Countless dog owners across the country have discovered thebenefits of off-leash areas - not only do they provide your dog somemuch-needed exercise, but they also reinforce the bond betweenpeople and pets. Whether youre visiting a park for the first time oryoure a regular, its important all patrons help make the park a safeand fun place for everyone to visit.

Consider these simple etiquette tips every time you head outwith your four-legged pal to ensure the best possible experience. PLAN A TEST RUN. If youre visiting the local dog park for thefirst time, go to the parks website or visit without your dog tocheck out rules, hours and permit or vaccination requirements.

Consider visiting at an off-peak time so your dog can get acquainted with the area in arelaxed setting before jumping in with a large group of dogs. PICK UP. This is the golden rule of dog parks. If your dog answers natures call, always have poop bags on hand in case they are not provided. Try to avoid eating, but if picnic tables are offered outside of the dog park gates, be sure to dispose of any garbagebefore you leave. Dogs are scavengers and will eat or chew on anything left behind. BE AWARE. Know where your dog is at all times. Its easy for owners to lose track of their pets as they run around, but that doesnt mean your dog has to be by your sideeither. You should be able to see your pet at all times. This allows you to monitor yourdogs interaction with other pets and discourage them from rushing new dogs orurinating on any seating areas or water stations. MAKE FRIENDS. Your dog wants to get to know other dogs; follow their exampleand strike up a conversation with a fellow pet owner. Not only might you find a newfriend, but getting to know fellow pet owners helps build a stronger community andpromotes even better experiences at the dog park.

    DAILY MEDITATION IMPROVESOVERALL HEALTH

A growing number of doctors and Americans, in general, are finding that

even brief stints of sitting quietly and breathing deeply can improveconcentration, lower stress and maybe even reduce your risk of disease. Putsimply, meditation can be good for your health.

According to new research, people who meditated for about 30 minutes aday for eight weeks had measurable changes in gray-matter density in partsof the brain associated with memory, sense of self, empathy and stress. Thestudy, which was published in the journal Psychiatric Research:

Neuroimaging , indicates that meditation directly impacts health.Meditation isnt a religious belief or about positive thinking, says

Sharon Salzberg, author of Real Happiness: The Power of Meditation and a

meditation teacher. Nor does it require a special background or education.Meditation can be practiced by anyone almost anywhere.

According to Salzberg, meditation can be any of the following: A trainingin concentration so that you can steady and focus your attention, and haveless distraction in your life; a way to practice mindfulness, which refines yourattention so you can connect more fully and directly with whatever comesyour way; and a way to experience and practice loving kindness, acompassionate awareness that opens you up to becoming more inclusive of individuals and their differences.

In our diverse society, overloaded with information and too many choices, these benefits can help you navigate through distractions, think more clearlyand focus on what matters.

IF YOURE INTERESTED IN MEDITATION, YOU CAN START BY: Setting a timer for five minutes and sitting in a comfortable position.

Despite all the photos of nimble swamis and yoga practitioners, theres norequirement that you sit on the floor. A chair will be fine, so long as bothfeet are squarely on the floor.

Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Dont try to control yourbreathing. Just focus on how your breath feels going in and out of your body and let your thoughts go. If you find your mind wandering, bring your attention back to your breath.

Practice this three times a week to start. You can then gradually increase your practice to 20 minutes daily, oryou can practice more frequently byremembering to breathe before answering thephone or while stuck in traffic.

For more information on the techniqueand benefits of meditation, check out

Salzbergs new book, Real Happiness: ThePower of Meditation .Remember, meditation is a cumulative

practice the more you incorporate it into your daily life, the more youll feel its benefits.

WARNING: Lack of Salt Hazardous to Your Health

Audrey Baker grew up watching her mother put table salt on nearly everything - steak,

potatoes, even gravy. Believing the nutrition myth that salt is bad for health, Baker sometimesscolded her Mom for her salty, old-fashioned ways.As an adult, Baker carefully monitored what she ate, putting herself on a low-salt diet with lots

of water. But one day at home, she became light-headed. Her heart raced, her chest pounded. Shecalled 911 and was rushed to an emergency room.

The problem: hyponatremia, a more-common-than-you-might-think condition in which theblood level of salt (sodium) in your body becomes abnormally low.

Thats when I realized my body does need salt, says Baker. They gave me a saline solutiondrip with sodium in it. It perked me right up. I felt terrific.

Baker isnt the only person surprised to learn that salt is anessential nutrient. In many ways, its this simple: without it, you

die; with it you can thrive. Still, controversy remains about thebest level of sodium in our bodies. Bakers experience illustratesan important message when it comes to low-sodium diets: Dontassume a low sodium diet is beneficial to everyone in general andto you in particular. Also, dont adopt a low-sodium diet untilyouve discussed its potential risks and benefits with your doctor.

No one has to convince Baker about the dangers of a sodium- restricted diet. Working with her doctor, Baker has changed howshe eats, choosing products with sodium throughout the day and, yes, using table salt, just as her mother used to.

It depends what your particular health situation is and whatyour doctor advises, says Baker. But I know from personalexperience that your body does need a certain amount of salt, andit can be harmful to you if you dont consume enough of it.

THE IMPORTANCE OF VITAMIN D The body needs vitamin D to help absorb calcium, which is

responsible for keeping bones, muscles and even the heart healthy andstrong.

Without enough vitamin D, men and women are at a heightened riskfor osteoporosis, a bone condition in which bones become brittle andfragile due to tissue loss.

Vitamin D is also beneficial for those who love to exercise. Musclesthat dont get enough calcium will cramp, hurt or feel weak, possiblyleading to chronic muscle aches and pains. If the body is getting enoughvitamin D, muscles are less likely to cramp or ache.

While its possible toinclude vitamin D in adaily diet, its alsodifficult because thereare not many foods richin vitamin D. However, men and women can takea multivitamin or even avitamin D pill to ensurethey get their daily

    recommended amount of vitamin D.

Is An Electric or Hybrid Car Right for You? Were all trying to do more with less these days, and many families are

examining their impact on the environment, both at home and on the road.Electric and hybrid cars have been garnering much attention for having a

smaller impact on the environment than traditional gas-powered vehicles, buthow do you know if an alternative energy vehicle is right for you? Before choosing a new car, its helpful to understand the differences

between hybrid and electric vehicles. Both types of vehicles are more efficient than traditional cars --

incorporating energy-saving and emissions-reducing features, many of which arerelated to innovative uses of lighter-weight plastics and reinforced plasticcomposites.

Hybrid cars are dual-powered, featuring an electric motor and a gas-poweredengine. The electric motor is powered by a battery, while the gas engine is, of

course, powered by gasoline. Depending on how and where you are driving, thecar switches between the motor and the engine to achieve maximum fuelefficiency and reduce emissions.

Electric cars, meanwhile, rely only on an electric motor powered by abattery. As battery technology advances, these batteries are getting morepowerful, less bulky and holding charges longer. The latest example of batterytechnology is the lithium-polymer (polymer means plastic) battery, which isgrowing in popularity among automakers. These batteries are up to 10 percentmore efficient than the nickel-metal hydride batteries currently in many hybridcars.

Electric cars have come a long way, but so far they dont have the samelong-range capabilities of gas-powered vehicles. But with hybrid vehicles, consumers can achieve the reduced emissions of an electric motor, along withthe long-range capabilities of a gas-powered engine.

Automakers also are increasing the efficiency of hybrid and electric cars byinvesting in more efficient design. They are using materials such as reinforcedplastic composites that can be as strong as steel, yet lighter -- to reduce vehicleweight and lighten the load on engines, while also maintaining the flexibility todesign aerodynamic, visually exciting cars. Vehicles built using theselightweight and ultra-strong materials tend to weigh less, while providing highperformance.

And the green credentials dont stop at the engine -- some new modelsinclude upholstery that uses plant oils to help make the plastic padding and evenseat belts made from recycled plastic bottles. For more information about howplastics are fueling auto innovations, visit www.plasticsmakeitpossible.com.

So is a hybrid or electric vehicle right for you?

Aging gracefully is all about taking aproactive approach to your future well- being - you anticipate the inevitablechanges and do whats necessary to stayhealthy and fit.

The same principles are true for yourhome. You need to assess the necessarychanges that must be made around yourhome to keep it fit, and you safe, so youand your home can successfully agetogether.

Helping your home age gracefullydoesnt mean adding industrial-lookingapparatuses throughout the house. Infact, with Lowes Accessible Homeprogram, youll never have to sacrificestyle for function. Plus, if you do theseprojects proactively, youll save moneyin the long run.

Here are some can-do projects to make your home more accessible foreveryday living. Safety in a shower/tub -- A handheld shower unit is a perfect solution foranyone who has to sit while showering. Use a plumbers wrench or an adjustablewrench to remove the old shower head; if difficult to remove, apply lubricatingspray. Remove any residue from threads on shower arm. Apply Teflon tape tothreads, wrapping it counterclockwise, three or four times. Place hose of newshower unit onto end of shower arm, turning it clockwise. Insert hand showerinto the shower arm mount, rotating it to desired spot. Use adjustable wrench totighten. Handheld shower units now come in a variety of finishes and sizes sureto spruce up anyones shower. Getting a better handle on knobs - For anyone who suffers from arthritis, alever handle is much easier on the joints than a knob. Plus, lever handles candress up the plainest of doors. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws on the olddoorknob. Insert stems of exterior lever horizontally into the holes in the latchcase. Place interior lever on the protruding spindle, aligning stems with screwholes. Insert screws and tighten with screwdriver. Avoiding slips - If you cant bear the sight of a bare floor and dont want toremove the beautiful rugs in your home, you must properly secure all of them. All rugs, including doormats, should be secured to the floor with non-skid tape.First, make sure floor surface is clean and dry. Attach tape to underside of rug, flip it over and adhere to floor. Dont forget the bathroom rug. Preventing falls - A stair handrail is designed to aid in ascending anddescending stairs. But, why stop at having only one handrail per stairway? Makeeach stairway more symmetrical and safe by having a second one installed. Also,be sure to check all handrails in the home for any that wiggle. Use a screwdriverto tighten any loose screws. Make sure there is adequate lighting at the top andbottom of each staircase. Lowes has a vast variety of lighting in stock to fit allyour needs. Providing stability - Todays shower grab bar is not your fathers (or hospitals)grab bar. The choices in style, size, color and installation will make you wonder

why you waited this long to have one. To install a grab bar, youll need a drill, the proper drill bits and the right grab bar. Its easy to install, just be sure tofollow the manufacturers instructions completely.

    TOP TIPSFOR BETTER

HEARTHEALTH Its always the perfect time for

heart-healthy lifestyle choices that canhelp us enjoy longer lives with ourloved ones.

Every 25 seconds somebody inAmerica suffers from a coronaryevent, such as heart attacks or strokes. And heart disease has long been theleading cause of death in the nation.

The good news, according to theexperts at the U.S. Centers for DiseaseControl, is the chance of developingcoronary heart disease can be reducedby taking steps to prevent and controlfactors that put people at greater risk.

Get Moving: Start slow if youarent in great shape. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Take a walk dailyand gradually increase your pace. Be sure to consult your doctor before startingany exercise regimen.

Limit Fats: Fatty foods can be high in cholesterol and trans fats that canclog arteries and lead to heart disease. There are many smart food choices thatcan help.

Choose lean meats and poultry without skin. Eat less than 300 mg of cholesterol daily and reduce hydrogenated oils and trans fats. Opting for fruitinstead of snack foods or candy is a great way to eat fewer fatty foods.

Embrace Antioxidants: Foods and drinks rich in antioxidants can combatcellular damage that can lead to heart disease. Apples, oranges, grapes and teaare some foods containing these good nutrients. Red wine, in particular, has highconcentrations of a super antioxidant called resveratrol thats found in the skinof grapes. Resveratrol is a natural substance that has garnered headlines world- wide due to its heart health and life-span enhancing effects.

But due to the intoxication effects and calories, drinking too much red winecan be harmful. Thats why many are using supplements or drinks fortified withresveratrol. One beverage garnering attention is Modjo forLIFE, a drink loadedwith vitamins, amino acids, antioxidants and five times the amount of

resveratrol found in a liter of red wine. It was crafted based on research fromHarvard Medical School and the Mayo Clinic, according to the beveragescreator, Victor H. Diaz, who founded Cellutions, an innovator in healthsupplements.

More Fiber, Less Salt: Vegetables, fruits and grains are great sources of fiber that may help lower risk of heart disease. Salt, meanwhile, can be harmful,so eat less than 2,300 mg of sodium daily. If you have hypertension, are middle- aged or African American, consume less than 1,500 mg of sodium daily, according to the CDC.

For more tips on heart health, visit the CDC at www.cdc.gov.

A few smart choices now can make a big difference. With this in mind, eating foods rich in antioxidants and drinking beverages with resveratrol canhelp trigger your natural defenses, says Diaz.

DID YOU KNOW? Men and women who die without a will do

not automatically have their assets seized by the

government. When men and women die withouta will, they leave what is known as intestacy. Theonly time a deceased persons assets end up withthe government is when the deceased has noliving next of kin.

Should a man or woman with living familyor dependents perish without a will, a formula isthen used to distribute the deceaseds assets.

While this formula ensures family ordependents get some of the deceased personsassets, it does not necessarily mean the

deceaseds wishes will be honored. To ensure their wishes are honored, a personmust have a will in place. Otherwise, the formula will be used to distributeassets.

Contrary to popular belief, children do not have to be born from legalmarriage to share in the distribution of assets. Whats more, laws have changedto include de facto partners in the distribution of assets when the deceasedleaves no will. Previously, this only applied to spouses. However, now samesex-couples have entitlements when their partners die without a will.

To determine the rules of asset distribution when a man or woman dieswithout a will, consult an attorney.

This happens because any kind of dancing activity or class will require you to stretchbefore you begin. Youll find that virtually all dance classes begin with a stretching warm upand end with a cool down period. Not only will dance increase your flexibility, itll helpwith your body posture. Consider the following as you aim for a more limber body.

Take a D ance Clas s in Your Area

Many dance studios and gyms offer dance classes for beginner adults. Theres no reasonto fear looking silly or out of place. The classes are not competitive in nature and everyoneis there to have fun. Expect to spend a good ten to fifteen minutes stretching beforebeginning any real dancing movements. No matter what form of dance you take (ballet,

jazz, ballroom, hip hop, modern or other), youll do stretchingexercises to target all the main muscle groups in your body. Repeat stretching will lead to greater flexibility over time.

Dance classes focus on stretching and increasing flexibilitybecause dancing itself requires you to move your body in new

and unusual ways. If youre not flexible, you could easily getinjured when you move your body in ways youre not accustomedto in daily life. As you begin, only take movements slightly pastyour comfort zone. For instance, when youre asked to lift your legstraight up in front of you, bring it up as far as you can make it go, trying to challenge yourself by pushing it up a tad further each

time. Whatever you do, dont force the movement. If you feelany pain, take it down to where its comfortable. Stretching

    should never be painful.

    Take an Aerobics Dance Class

Aerobics classes with dance influences are all the rage. Zumba, for instance, is one the biggest crazes in group fitness

classes. It combines Latin dance-inspired movements withcardiovascular activity for a complete hour-long workout.

If youre trying to increase your flexibility, Zumba is an especially good class to try. Likeall other dance and cardio classes, Zumba involves an extensive warm up and cool downsection with plenty of stretching. Because its a class for all levels, you can ease into themovements and take it at your own pace. The combination of lunges, squats, hip swirls andshoulder rolls, among other movements, will increase your flexibility without you evenknowing it.

Your flexibility will improve as you take dance classes and participate in dance-inspiredaerobic group workout sessions. To see changes, you have to be willing to push yourself alittle past your comfort zone when you stretch. Rest assured that with time, youll findyourself becoming more and more limber.

Taking up dancing is an excellentactivity if youre learning how to improveyour flexibility. Dont be discouraged bythe thought of limber ballerinas doingsplit leaps. Nobody expects you to bendand move like a dancer when you firstbegin. Stick with it, however, and youllfind that stretches you once couldnt dowill give way to flexibility.

BOOMERS - INTERESTEDIN BEING WHO THEY

REALLY ARE Baby Boomers started life in post-World War II

nuclear families, and having worked for many years toestablish their own personal financial security, theyvealready satisfied the basic levels needs: physiological, safety, and many of their social needs and self-esteemneeds. To accomplish this Boomers had to spend yearsworking in corporate America where they had tosubjugate their true underlying passions to the day-to- day needs of the business world and the financial needsof their growing families.

As they approach retirement, they want to make up for any opportunities, dreams orgoals that they missed out on during their working years. They now have different

motivations than they did during their younger years. They are most focused on meetingtheir self-actualization needs. They are interested in being who they really are, anddeveloping (or expressing) their full potentials in life.

They are self-directed and self-driven. They will happily undertake activities, andmake choices, that many would have avoided in their younger years for fear of whatothers might think. Many of the things that would have bothered them - or even stoppedthem - in earlier years, dont even register a blip on the radar screen anymore. Theyvemellowed, and theyre happily traveling the road to inner peace.

For many Baby Boomers, this path may mean starting their own business, goingback to school to get an advanced degree, globe trotting around the world, or pursuing avariety of other artistic or cultural passions. Boomers are an incredible force in the

economy, achieving their dreams and goals, creating and enjoying their interesting lifeexperiences.

PACK CAREFULLYWhen packing for a trip, its important to be prepared. Some packing essentials include a comfortable

pair of shoes, a hat and sunglasses to protect the face, clothing that you can wear in layers and anynecessary personal items. Multi-purpose items, such as a scarf, which can also be used as a makeshif t

VISIT YOUR DOCTORAs a senior, your health is very important and no one ever wants to get sick or injured on vacation.

Schedule a checkup with your doctor before any major trip to discuss the activities you plan to do, and getwritten prescriptions for any medications you may need. Keep your prescriptions in their originalcontainers so that they can be identified properly. If you plan to travel out of the country, contact theCenter for Disease Control and Prevention for required immunizations.

GET PROTECTIONWhether traveling 50 miles or 5,000, prepare for the unexpected by purchasing a membership from a

travel and medical assistance company like On Call International before you leave. Senior travelers ages77 to 85 can purchase a special Mature Membership, which includes services like emergency medicaltransportation to the hospital of their choice, transportation home, worldwide physician referrals, a 24- hour nurse helpline and emergency travel assistance. The membership also includes pre-travel destinationand health information, lost-luggage assistance, worldwide legal assistance and even covers the cost of transporting grandchildren or a traveling companion home if you need to stay in the hospital.

PLAN CAREFULLYWhen planning your trip, stay organized and compile any contact information and travel reservations

to keep in a folder to ensure you dont have any problems. You might also include emergency numbersand family contact information in this folder as well. Whether driving or flying, its smart to gather mapsahead of time so you dont get lost. If you are traveling out of the country, make sure your passport is upto date several months ahead of time as getting a new passport takes time to process.
