Push to Walk, a non-
profit organization that
provides individualized
workouts and resources to
people with spinal cord
injuries and other forms of
paralysis, welcomed “friendly
robot assistant,” Budgee™, to
Push to Walk’s Summer Boot
Camp Open House, for
demonstrations and informa-
tion sharing with clients and
supporters.
On Wednesday, July 15,
as a part of our week-long
Summer Boot Camp, Push to
Walk hosted an Open House
event, inviting various ven-
dors of adaptive resources for
our clients. A standout ven-
dor was 5 Elements Robotics,
the maker of Budgee™, a per-
sonal assistant robot designed
to follow their owner and
carry their belongings.
The Budgee™ robot
looks promising to aid in the
everyday lives of people with
disabilities, whether it be trips
to the mall, grocery shopping,
or carrying luggage through
an airport. Budgee™ uses sen-
sors, which are placed in the
owners’ pockets, to follow
them around and keep the
robot from falling down stairs
or bumping into walls. It is
able to carry up to 50 pounds
and can also fold up into a
portable form weighing only
about 5 pounds. The robot
runs up to 10 hours on a
charge and will notify the
owner when the charge is run-
ning low.
“We regularly monitor
and research resources bene-
fiting the spinal cord injuryand paralysis community so
we can share this information
with our clients and support-
ers,” said Cynthia Templeton,
President and Founder of
Push to Walk. “Budgee™ is a
fun and wonderfully helpful
resource that can help people
with disabilities by lessening
the burden of transporting
heavy materials and granting
more independence and less
reliance on others.”

Mid- to late-summer is
peak carnival and
fair season. During
this time of year, empty fields
and parking lots are trans-
formed into entertainment
wonders featuring rides, foods
and plenty of games of chance.
Carnival games are a fun
diversion. Thousands and
thousands of fairgoers test their
luck at these games when car-
nivals roll into town. Games
often seem as though they are
stacked in the house’s favor, but
games are not impossible to
win. A few pointers can
increase any player’s chances of
winning.
Ring toss: The object of
this game is to throw a ring and
have it settle around the neck
of a bottle. For the best
chances, toss the ring so that it
remains as flat horizontally as

possible. Think of throwing it
as you would a Frisbee®.
Milk bottle pyramid: In
this game, participants have to
throw a softball to knock over
milk bottles stacked in a pyra-
mid. It seems easy, but some-
times the weight of the softball
is not in proportion to the
weight of the bottles. The ball
may be filled with cork, and the
bottles may be weighted on the
bottom. Aim for the center of
the two lowest bottles and
throw the ball as hard as you
can.
Basketball shot: In this
game, the rim of the basketball
net is likely smaller than regu-
lation and the backboard may
be stiffer than players are accus-
tomed to. In addition, the ball
may be overinflated so that it is
more bouncy. Try a high arc
that will help you swish the
ball. Otherwise, aim for the top
of the square on the backboard
so that the ball will bank right
into the net.
Whack-a-mole: This
game is fun because a player

Home Health Care is a
preferred way of care
for those who wish to
receive quality individualized
services in the comfort of
their homes. Recipients of
home health care include the
elderly, those living with an
illness, and those recovering
from an accident or surgery.
Choosing a quality home
health care agency is not an
easy decision. Here are somehelpful points to consider:
1. Is the agency certified by a
reputable accrediting body of
healthcare organization, such
as the Commission on
Accreditation for Home Care,
Inc., (CAHC), which is New
Jersey’s largest and only state-
based home care accreditation
program?
2. Is the agency available 24/7
with an RN Supervisor on-
call if necessary?
3. Is there a proper process for
the hiring, screening, and
training of employees? Note:
RNs need to be licensed by
the New Jersey Board of
Nursing and home healthaides should be well-trained
on emergency, disease or
infection control, and safety
measures.
4. Is there an efficient care-giver-client matching proce-
dure to ensure individual
expectations and needs are
met?
5. Is there an RN-approvedand tailor-made plan of care
developed for the agency’s
home health aides to follow
for each specific client?
6. Is there an efficient com-
munication system in place
between the agency, caregiver,
and client, for handling con-
cerns and issues such as a
home health aide running late
or unable to make it to work?
7. What payment options are
available, including Group
Health Plans, Long Term
Care Insurance, Medicaid,
Private/Self Pay, and Vet-
erans’ Benefits?
8. Simply, are the services
being offered by the agencyright for you and your loved
one? Does the agency offer a)
skilled services performed by
an RN, such as medication
set-up per physician orders,
infusions, and wound care and
b) non-skilled services gener-
ally performed by home
health aides, including com-
panionship, daily errands,
light housekeeping, and meal
preparation?

can go after whichever critter
pops out of the hole. A key
advantage to this game is never
to raise the mallet higher than
the height of the mole. Thisensures a faster swing and a
quicker resetting to hit the
next mole that pops up.
Balloons and darts: To
counteract potentially dull
darts, look for the shiniest,
thinnest balloons. Those are
the ones that are inflated the
most. This will increase your
chances of popping a balloon.
Frog toss: Young chil-
dren are drawn to this game
because they get to launch a
rubber frog into the air and
throw it toward a lily pad. The
chance of getting wet com-
bined with pounding a mallet
can make this game quite
attractive. To improve your
odds of winning, make the frog
as small as possible by folding
its legs underneath the body.
Aim high so that the frog is
launched in a high arc and has
a better chance of landing in
that lily pad cup.
Carnival games can beentertaining. Players have a
greater chance of taking home
a prize if they learn some
secrets of each game they play.

Dogs are wonderful
companion animals,
providing their own-
ers with loyal friends who are
seemingly always up for walks
or games of Frisbee.
Dog ownership is reward-
ing, but it’s also a significant
responsibility. Before adopting
a shelter dog or buying from a
breeder, prospective dog own-
ers should consider a host of
factors to determine if now is
the best time for them to wel-
come a new four-legged friend
into their family.
Time: Some pets do not
require their owners to com-
mit much of their time. For
example, fish and bird owners
don’t need to take their pets
outside for walks or bathroom
breaks, making them ideal
pets for people who want a pet
but don’t have the time to
devote to caring for more
needy animals. A person con-
sidering getting a dog should
make an honest assessment of
how much time they have to
take care of their animals.Dogs don’t just need their
owners to take them for walks
and let them into the back-
yard to go to the bathroom.
Dogs are social animals and
need their owners to spend
time with them every day. A
person with an especially hec-
tic schedule may want to
delay getting a dog until they
can free up more time in their
days.
Money: Owning a dog
requires a considerable finan-
cial commitment, one that
extends far beyond the adop-
tion fees or prices established
by private breeders. Dogs need
food, comfortable shelter,
toys, and medical care, which
can be expensive should dogs
get sick. Some dog owners buy
pet insurance to offset the cost
of veterinarian visits, while
others simply pay out of pock-
et when their dogs have med-
ical expenses. Dogs tend to
hide physical problems fromtheir owners, which is why
routine veterinary visits are so
important. Many veterinari-
ans recommend annual visits
for dogs under the age of 10
and visits every six months for
dogs 10 and older. A person
should make sure they can
afford those visits before
bringing a dog into their lives.
Climate: Where a person
lives should also influence
their decision to get a dog.
Though climate won’t neces-
sarily prevent them from
adopting a dog, they may
want to avoid adopting cer-
tain breeds of dogs dependingon where they live. For exam-
ple, short-nosed breeds,
including English bulldogs
and pugs, are highly suscepti-
ble to heat stroke, as their
shorter airways give them less
of a chance to cool the air
they draw into their bodies.
Things to consider before getting a dog

People living in especially
warm climates may want to
avoid short-nosed breeds in
favor of dogs that are better
equipped to handle the heat.Age of the dog: Many
prospective dog owners want
to adopt puppies so they can
be with their new best friends
throughout the dogs’ lives.
But puppies can be difficult
to house train, and that
training takes a combina-
tion of time, money, and
patience. If a person is not
ready to commit all three to
house train their dog, theyshould consider adopting an
older dog that is already
house trained.
Family members or
roommates: Dogs make
wonderful additions to a
home, but not everyone is
cut out for living with dogs.
If a person lives with other
people, be it family members
or roommates, it’s best to con-
sult with them before bringing
a dog home, as dogs can
change the dynamic of any
living arrangement. In addi-tion, they may unknowingly
live with someone who has a
dog allergy and cannot cohab-
itate with a dog. It’s best to
consult the people they live
with before bringing a dog
home, and only do so if they
have their blessing.
Dogs are great compan-
ions who can greatly improve
their owners’ quality of life;however, dog ownership is not
for everyone, and prospective
dog owners should first con-
sider a host of factors before
bringing dogs into their
homes.

Summer is a season forrelaxation. When it
comes to food, nothing
quite exudes the spirit of sum-
mer like a good dessert. A
freshly cooked pie on the win-
dowsill can waft through the
house and into the yard, entic-
ing family members and
passersby alike.
Kicking up your heels and
enjoying a piece of pie on the
patio is a great way to spend asummer evening. This summer,
relax with the following recipe
for “Blueberry Pie” from Mollie
Cox Bryan’s “Mrs. Rowe’s
Little Book of Southern Pies”
(Ten Speed Press).
Blueberry Pie
Makes one 9-inch pie
1 recipe Plain Pie Pastry
6 cups blueberries, fresh or frozen (thawed and drained if
frozen)
2 tablespoons lemon juice
½ cup sugar
½ cup all-purpose flour
¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons cold unsalted but-
ter, cut into bits
1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon
milk, for egg wash
Line a 9-inch pie plate
with 1 rolled-out crust andplace in the refrigerator to
chill.
Put the blueberries in a
bowl, add the lemon juice, and
stir to coat. Separately, com-
bine the sugar, flour and cinna-
mon, mix thoroughly and stir
into the blueberries. Spread the
filling in the crust, and scatter
the butter over the top. Brush
the rim of the crust with the
egg wash, cover with the sec-
ond rolled-out crust, and seal
and flute or crimp the edges.
Put the pie in the refriger-
ator to chill until firm, about
30 minutes. Store the remain-
ing egg wash in the refrigerator,
too. Preheat the oven to 425 F.
Brush the top crust with
egg wash, then score the top
with two perpendicular cuts for
steam vents. Bake for 20 min-
utes, then lower the oventemperature to 350 F and
bake for another 30 to 40
minutes, until the juices are
bubbling and the crust is
golden brown. Cool on a
wire rack for at least two
hours before slicing, then
chill in the refrigerator until
ready to serve. Serve chilled
or warm.
Plain Pie Pastry
Makes two 9-inch pie crusts2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup vegetable shortening
5 to 7 tablespoons cold milk
Sift the flour and salt into
a bowl. Cut in the shortening
with a pastry blender until it is
the size of small peas. Sprinkle
1 tablespoon of the milk over
part of the flour mixture.Gently toss with a fork and
push to the side of the bowl.
Sprinkle another tablespoon of
milk over another dry part, toss
with a fork and push to the side
of the bowl. Repeat with the
remaining milk until all of the
flour mixture is moistened.
Press the dough together
to form 2 equal balls, then flat-
ten into disks. Roll out the
crusts right away, or wrap thedough tightly, smoothing out
any little wrinkles or air pock-
ets, and refrigerate for up to 2
weeks. On a lightly floured sur-
face, roll out each ball to a
thickness of 1/8 inch. Use a
light touch and handle the
dough as little as possible.

to this groundbreaking musical.

As technology has
made working re-
motely easier, more
and more professionals are
working from home. Working
from home can help working
parents save money on child-
care costs and help all workers
avoid rush hour traffic jams
and the costs of commuting to
and from the office.
The right working envi-ronment is essential for men
and women who work from
home. An environment that’s
conducive to work can help
people increase their produc-
tivity and make their employ-
ers more likely to allow more
employees to work from
home. Professionals who are
new to working from home
may find it takes some time
before they can create the per-
fect working environment,
but the following are a few
factors to consider when plan-
ning a home office.

One of the disadvantages
to working from home is that
remote workers don’t have

office, such as color copiers or
scanners. If you want to
include even scaled-down
versions of such equipment in
your office, you will needample space. In addition, less
spacious home offices can feel
too tight and enclosed, mak-
ing workers uncomfortable
and less enthusiastic about
working every day. Pick a spot
in your home that affords
room for your equipment and
the ability to move around so
you don’t feel cramped
throughout the workday.
LIGHTINGLighting is another fac-
tor remote workers must con-
sider when they’re planning
their home offices. Natural
light can provide an energetic
boost and improve your mood,
so choose a room in your
home that gets lots of sunlight
during the day. Many profes-
sionals who work remotely do
so from the basements of their
homes, which can make it dif-ficult to rely on natural light.
If the basement is the only
location in your home that
can fit a home office, look for
lighting sources that replicate
daylight so you are not work-
ing in dark quarters. Speak
with your physician about
how to arrange lighting to
reduce eyestrain caused by
staring at a computer.
CONNECTIVITY
Connectivity also must
be considered when planning
a home office. While wirelessInternet has made Internet
dead zones less problematic,
certain areas or rooms in your
home may still be touch-and-
go with regard to Internet con-
nectivity. Such areas should be
avoided when choosing a
room for your home office, as
it can be difficult to remain
productive if your connection
to your office’s external server
is routinely compromised.
Find an area where the wire-
less connection is always
strong.DISTRACTIONS
While your home might
be empty for much of the day,
you don’t want to be distracted
when the kids come home
from school or when your
spouse or roommate arrives
home from work. Avoid put-
ting your home office too close
to popular hangout areas in
your home, such as the
kitchen and the living room.
Instead, choose a room where
you have lots of privacy so you
can focus on your work andwon’t be routinely interrupted.
Working from home can
pay numerous dividends, but
professionals who telework
must put careful thought into
the rooms or areas of their
homes where they plan to
work.
