    Whether you are a

    home owner or

    looking to rent or

    sell a residential or commer-

cial property what is the first

thing that stands out? Its how

    the property and grounds are

    designed and maintained.

    Landscaping and design goes a

    long way! For homeowners,

there is truly no other way to

    state pride in ownership than

    a professionally landscaped

    and manicured property.

    Dennis Coyle, owner of

    DC Landscape and Design has

    been providing this profes-

    sional service to our local

    communities for 9 years.

Lets face it. It truly is all

    about the curb

    appeal! The first

    thing you see

    when you pull up

    to any home or

    business is the

    landscaping. Smart home and

    business owners understand

the need for this type of

    investment.

    Landscaping and season-

    al maintenance increases and

    sustains the investment in

    your property. No matter the

size of your property or budget

    DC Landscape and Design can

    provide the services necessary.

    Over the 33 years Ive

    been a Retirement

    and Estate Planning

    Specialist, most of my

    prospects, before becoming

my clients, asked me the ques-

    tion: Where is your portfolio

invested? It has been by far

    the most frequently asked

question of me but, it really

    wasnt what these people

    wanted to know. The dis-

    guised question was simply:

    Do you actually own what

you are attempting to sell me

    today? More simply stated,

Do you own what you sell?

Proudly, I would answer, yes I

do, if I didnt, then you would

refer to me as a professionalhypocrite! Whether a life

    insurance policy, an annuity,

    mutual funds or disability

    insurance, I became my own

client and am thrilled that I

    took my own advice.

    I profess that everyone,

    during their working years,

    purchase a life insurance poli-

    cy and a disability policy

    while simultaneously invest-

    ing money systematically into

    quality stock mutual funds,

    both foreign and domestic.

    The addition of a variable

    annuity allows for tax-deferral

of any growth realized in the

    contract; while the mutual

    funds though currently tax-

    able, are reachable without a

    government penalty prior to

age 59 for a home purchase,

an emergency need or a newcar. In my case those funds

were needed for my first home

    purchase, cars and baby needs

as our family grew to 4 chil-

    dren. I started accounts for

each of our kids shortly after

    their birth to accumulate for

college, a car for them and for

    their retirement plans. While

still working I am funding all

    of their accounts and the

    retirement accounts for my

wife and I. However, should I

    become disabled or die, insur-

    ance would swoop-in and save

the day and my family from

    financial ruin. Every month I

    continue to fund my mutual

    funds and annuities, my IRAs

    and my personal pension

    plans.

    I both preach and prac-

tice living below my means to

    have the financial resources to

    build and grow our money.

Over the three decades thathave passed since my entering

this industry, Ive had to use

some of the products I sold

    myself, like health insurance

and the mutual funds I invest-

ed in to pay for my two older

    childrens college expenses

    taking absolutely no loans in

    their names or mine. The

    mutual funds continued to

    grow over the contributions so

I had the opportunity to with-

draw again to purchase a sec-

ond home, then a third and

    more, all with no mortgages.

    My Simplified Employee

    Pension Plan (SEP) annuities

have grown to the point now

that they can support us dur-

    ing our retirement. When I

    die, there will be additional

    life insurance dollars to guar-

    antee my wifes solvency and

    continue to leave a bequest

    and legacy for our children.

My wife and I have prac-ticed what we preached for

    over thirty years, utilizing the

    identical plans, programs,

    policies and strategies that we

    professed and marketed to our

    prospects and clients of the

day, of the months, of the

    years and over the decades

that have gone by. As new

    and improved innovations

    presented themselves, it was

    incumbent upon me to inform

    my clients that an opportuni-

    ty for upgrading was available

and in addition to myself and

    family, they should upgrade

    too!

    These are the things that

    a well-versed, competent, pro-

    fessional financial advisor

does for his clients and if your

    financial planner is not work-

ing for you to this end, per-

haps a change is in order.

Does he or she practice what

they preach and teach? It is agreat question that in my

opinion needs to be asked and

the answer given to you by

    your financial advisor.

A few years ago, I almost

had to test my planning tech-

    niques by my wife potentially

filing a claim with my life

    insurance carriers; I qualified

    to receive payments on the

    disability policies too. Further,

    my designees required the

usage of 3 legal documents my

    estate planning attorney pre-

    pared, the Health Proxy, the

    Power of Attorney and the

    Living Will! Fortunately,

    everything and everyone was

    prepared and empowered to

act on my behalf and with the

financial resources to do so. I

    recovered from my cardiac

ordeal to write this columntoday, five years later. Like

practicing a fire drill that we

    hope will never be needed,

each of us must be prepared

for some bad news down the

road and what is becoming an

    even bigger bout, the longevi-

ty game. Did you realize that

    you might outlive your money

    and resources? There is little

fear of that in my case and the

families I serve because of the

    innovative products and

    opportunities available in the

    marketplace today. If your

    portfolio does not enjoy the

    same protection, perhaps you

should call me to discuss it! It

might only be a few minor

    portfolio carburetor adjust-

ments or you might require a

    major revamping of every-

thing, regardless, the examshould be taken, just like the

fire drills you ran as a child in

    school.

    After you file your 2014

    tax return, you may

    want to forget about

taxes for a while. But perhaps

    you should take advantage of

    your current familiarity with

    your financial situation

instead. By acting now, you can

    make next years return less

    taxing.

    Here are suggestions.

    Check your withholding

    for 2015. The best indicator

that you need to change your

    withholding is the bottom line

on your 2014 tax return. A

    large refund means youve

    given the IRS an interest-free

    loan money you could have

    invested yourself. A large bal-

ance due can mean you end up

    paying penalty and interest

charges on top of your regular

    tax liability. To change your

    withholding, give your employ-

er an updated Form W-4. If

    youre newly retired, you may

    need to start making quarterly

    Many families have

    their own routines

    on weeknights. Kids

    may tackle their homework

    before dinner, and once every-

    ones plate is clean, family

    members may spend time

    together or go their separate

    ways, spending time online

    with friends or watching their

    favorite television programs on

    the couch.

    Parents who feel their

    weeknights dont include

    enough family time are often

on the hunt for more family-

    friendly activities the whole

family can enjoy even if every-

one has to go to work or school

the next day. The following are

    a handful of family-friendly

    weeknight activities that can

bring families closer together.Movie night: Family

movie night is a tradition for

    many families, and parents who

    want to spend more time

    together as families may find

that movie night is a great way

to share a few laughs or even

    facilitate discussions about

    important topics broached in

certain films. Each week let a

    different family member pick

that weeks movie and ask himor her to explain his or her

choice and why they think its

a film the whole family will

enjoy. Let the kids join you as

you get the popcorn ready or

    make special treats to enjoy

    while the movie is playing.

    Family walk: Walking is a

great way for parents to instill a

love of physical activity in their

    children, and nightly walks

    also make great opportunities

    for families to leave their

    devices behind and discuss the

    goings-on in their lives.

    Weather permitting, take a

    family walk after dinner each

    night, which can help make

    your family healthier and

    strengthen the bonds between

    family members.

Writing activities: An-other way families can escape

    their devices and resist the

    temptation of social media on

    weeknights is to get together

    for weekly writing sessions. Ask

    each family member to create

brief lists on a range of topics,

whether its a list of favorite

    books or countries each person

wants to visit or a bucket list of

    things each family member

wants to do at one point intheir lives. Allow about 15

    minutes for each person to

write his or her lists, and then

    discuss each persons list,

    including the inspiration

behind each item that made it

    onto the lists.

Game night: Classicboard games or games like

checkers might not be as popu-

lar today as they were prior to

the advent of the Internet, but

that does not mean a night

    centered around such games

does not still make for a very

    family-friendly evening. Stock

up on some classic board games

    and share the responsibility of

    choosing which game to play

each week. Board games cantake up to a few hours to play,

    and thats a great opportunity

    for families to share some

    laughs without being interrupt-

    ed by their devices.

    Craft night: Arts and

    crafts night is another great

way for families to spend time

    together. Parents can choose

    age-appropriate projects that

can help kids and adults alike

    tap into their creative sides.

    Solicit ideas when planning

    craft night so everyone feels

    like they played their part.

    Nights together as a fami-

ly do not need to be limited to

    weekends. Parents willing to get

a little creative can enjoy fami-

    ly-friendly evenings no matter

what day it happens to be.

    and some of the schools

    alumni.

    The performance is a

    wonderful way to expose

young children to the world of

    dance in a comfortable local

theater, and a great opportu-nity to see and support the

    dance population in the area.

    Many trainers and vet-

    erinarians recom-

    mend that dog own-

ers buy dog crates as soon as

    possible after buying or adopt-

ing a dog. Apet owners choice

of crate can go a long way

    toward ensuring the dog reacts

    positively to the crate.

    The Association of

    Professional Dog Trainers rec-

ommends the use of crates for

puppies and dogs as a short-

term training tool and as a safe-

    ty precaution throughout the

dogs life. Crates can be invalu-

    able in house training young

    dogs and helping to curtail

    destructive behavior, such as

    chewing. As more people trav-

el with their pets, crates also

    provide a safe and convenient

    confinement option in the car,

on an airplane and in pet-

    friendly hotel rooms.

    Crates also offer a cozy

spot dogs can call their own.

Crates can feed dogs need for

    security. When used correctly,

and not as punishment for a

dog, crates can serve as com-forting retreats for dogs when

    they need alone time.

    Where to buy?

    Crates can be purchased

at most pet supply retailers, and

they also are available at many

    department stores, hardware

    stores and online retailers.

    Pet owners who desire certain

    materials or have special

    requirements of their dog crates

    probably can find the biggest

    selection at pet supply stores.

    What size to get?

    It is important to consider

the size of the dog when pur-

    chasing a crate. The crate

shouldnt be too big nor toosmall. Choose a crate in which

the dog can sit up straight with-

out banging its head on the top

of the crate. Dogs also should

be able to turn around with

ease and lie down on their sides

    with paws extended.

    Many pet owners make

the mistake of getting a larger

crate than is necessary. Dogs do

not like to soil in their sleeping

areas, but crates that are too

    large may encourage pooches

to use one end as a bathroom

and the other as a sleeping

    area, and ultimately that can

    make dogs less enthusiastic

about crates. Also, crates thatare too large will not provide

    the feeling of security dogs

    crave.

    According to Labrador

    Training HQ, measure the dog

    while he is standing upright

from nose to the base of the

tail. Add five to six inches to

    this measurement, and that

will be an ideal length for the

    crate. Also measure the dog

    while he is sitting upright.

Again, add a few inches to themeasurement, and this will be

    the minimum height of the

    crate.

    What about a growing puppy?

    Some owners prefer to

    upgrade crates as their dogs

    grow. Budget-conscious pet

owners can buy a larger crate

and then use a divider to size it

    down for puppy use. The

divider can be moved as neces-sary when the puppy grows.

    What are the different crate

    materials?

    Crates come in plastic,

metal wire, wood, and nylon or

    another fabric material. Each

has its own share of advantages

    and disadvantages. Wire crates

    are what many people envision

in a crate, and such crates areamong the most popular

    because they provide ventila-

    tion, an easily cleaned floor

    tray, folding capabilities, and

    visibility for the dog. However,

    some dog owners feel wire

crates bear too close a resem-

    blance to cages.

    Fabric crates can be cozy

and light, but dogs that are

    prone to scratching and tearing

may be able to escape themeasily. Plastic crates can be

    more private, and wood crates

can be customized to fit with

    the dcor of the house.

    Pet owners should shop

around to find which crate best

fits the needs of their dogs. If

crates will remain in the home,

a more attractive crate may be

a priority. If the crate will be

    used for travel, something

    lighter and more portable may

    be the best fit.

    Crates can be handy tools

for dog owners, as crates pro-

    vide a safe environment for

    dogs when owners arent home

and can make great places for

dogs to curl up in when they

    need a break from stimulation.

Crates also are handy for travel. For more information on the

right crate, speak with a vet or

    consult with employees of

    a pet supply retailer.

Landscaping is a reward-ing hobby for many

    homeowners. Men and

    women with green thumbs

often take pride in their lush

    lawns and gardens, feeling a

    sense of accomplishment as

their landscapes spend springand summer returning to form

    and making yards more invit-

    ing spaces to spend relaxing

    summer nights.

    But even the most well-

    maintained lawns are not

immune to problems that cancompromise all the hard work

    men and women put into

    their lawns. One such prob-

    lem many homeowners

    encounter is a grub infesta-

tion. Grubs are a type of pest

that can cause considerabledamage to lawns, and while

    many homeowners have no

    doubt heard of grubs, they

    might want to learn more

    about these pesky pests so

they know what to do should

    grubs ever appear in theiryards.

    What are grubs?

    Grubs are insects that

live in the soil, where they

feed on grass and roots. Many

grubs are the larva of Japanese

beetles, and those beetles typ-ically lay their eggs in sun-

    drenched areas of lawns in

    midsummer.

What are signs of grub dam-

    age?

    Grubs not only damage

lawns on their own, but they

serve as food sources for local

    wildlife as well, attracting

wildlife, which can do its own

    damage to lawns.

Lawns can turn brownfor a variety of reasons, and

grubs are just one of many

    potential culprits behind the

    browning of once-luscious

    landscapes. Grubs feed on

    roots, so homeowners who

    suspect their lawns have fallen

    victim to grub infestations can

pull up the areas where grasshas turned brown to see if

    there are any grubs, which

    look like worms.

    Landscapes that have

    suddenly become popular

    among local wildlife that is

digging up lawns may also be

infested with grubs. Skunksand raccoons feed on grubs,

and may dig up lawns where

    grubs are present.

    Damage resulting from

    grub infestation is most visible

from late summer to early fall.

    Can grub damage be prevent-

    ed? Preventing grub infesta-

    tion typically requires home-

    owners to keep watchful eyes

    on their lawns. Pay particular

    attention to areas that begin

    to brown, especially areas that

are turning brown in spite of

adequate watering. An earlyindicator of a grub infestation

is small grubs around the roots

    of grass. In such instances,

    applying insecticide may be

    enough to prevent a small

    grub problem from spreading.

    Insecticides also can be

    an effective preventativemeasure for homeowners

    looking to avoid grub infesta-

tions. Speak with a local land-

    scaping professional for rec-

    ommendations about which

    insecticide to apply and how

    best to apply it.

What can I do about grubdamage?

    Attempting to treat

grubs in the spring may be

    ineffective, as grubs are large

    and no longer feeding in

    spring. So homeowners deal-

    ing with grub infestations

    should address the situation

    before they retire their green

    thumbs for the winter.

    Remove debris from grub

    infestations with a rake before

    watering the affected areas.

    Watering can help some dam-

    aged roots recover, but areas

    that have been especially

    damaged may need to be

    24/32

    Mother's Day is right

    around the corner,

    and this special

    holiday serves to honor all

    those women who devote so

much time and effort to theirfamilies. While gifts and

    other trinkets are certainly

part of the celebration, a vast

    majority of children opt to

treat Mom to a night out on

    the town come Mother's

Day. Not only does this give

mom a night off from cook-

ing, but also it presents an

    opportunity to get dressed up

and spend time together as a

    family.

    A vast number of fami-

    lies travel to their favorite

restaurants for Mother's Daymeals. Mother's Day is one of

    the busiest holidays of the

    year for restaurants. The

Nation al Retai l Federat ion

    says 54.8 percent of

    Americans treat their moth-

ers to a special meal out on

    Mother's Day. Billions of dol-

    lars are generated by people

    eating out with their moth-

ers. With large crowds to be

    expected, diners can follow a

    few tips when treating Mom

    to a meal.

    Book early... very early. To

    guarantee a reservation at

    any restaurant, namely your

favorite restaurant, you willneed to make a reservation

    well in advance of Mother's

Day. It's never too early to

put your name on the reser-

    vation list. Don't forget

    Mother's Day is Sunday, May

    10, 2015.

Expect to wait. Even with a

    reservation, you're bound to

    spend some time waiting at

    the restaurant. Other fami-

lies may be lingering at their

tables, as no one wants to

rush Mom out of the door.

    Plan accordingly for a poten-

    tially long wait time. This

    means having a snack before

you leave. Don't arrive fam-ished, as no one wants the

    dining party to be hungry

and cranky, which is not a

    good way to celebrate Mom.

    Have plenty of snacks and

    drinks on hand for young

    children, as well as activities

    to keep them entertained.

    Consider dining out a day

    before or after. Restaurants

    are generally packed on

Mother's Day, and as a result

    kitchen and wait staffs might

    be overtaxed. What's more,

    diners might be relegated to

    a special or abbreviated

menu. If you want a more

relaxed setting and the abili-ty to order whatever you

desire, it may be a better idea

    to celebrate Mother's Day in

    advance. Then have Mom

enjoy a relaxing day at home

    on her special day.

    Take-out is an option.

Families can treat Mom to a

    dinner out, without really

    having to go out. Many

    restaurants offer takeout

service, so you will not be

    limited to pizza or Chinese.

    Even chain restaurants have

curbside service, so if Mom is

in the mood for a burger or

    something more elaborate,

she'll have that option.Expect an included gratu-

    ity. Restaurants often include

a gratuity in the bill when

    servicing larger parties, such

as those that might be cele-

    brating Mother's Day. The

    standard gratuity rate is 18

percent, but you may want to

go above and beyond if you

    feel the service is exemplary.

Hire a sitter for young kids.

    Although Mother's Day is a

    chance for the entire family

    to spend time together, the

main goal is to ensure Mom's

    comfort and happiness. If

    very young children are in

tow, she may not be able to

    relax and enjoy her meal.

Infants will need to be fed,

    and toddlers may be easily

    distracted. Have a sitter

    watch little ones when adults

    are dining out, and then

    Mom can enjoy time with

    the kids when she returns

    home for more celebrating.

    With the warmer

    temperatures and

    fresh fruits that

ripen this time of year, a fruit

dessert is the perfect way to

    complete your special

    Mothers Day meal and an

easy recipe to get the kids

    involved. This recipe can be

    made ahead of time and

chilled until you are ready to

    serve. You can substitute a

    blend of other seasonal

    berries or your moms own

    favorite fruits would work

    equally well. Or try layering

strawberries, blueberries andraspberries, each on a differ-

ent layer for an even fancier

treat. Make sure to use a

large, clear bowl to serve, or

    create individual glass serv-

ing cups, as its the best way

to show off the many layers

    of this surprisingly easy

    dessert.

    INGREDIENTS

    4 cups fresh strawberries, sliced

(or 4 cups of your favorite sea-

    sonal fruit)

1 cup cold milk1 teaspoon grated orange peel

    2 cups heavy whipping cream,

    whipped and unsweetened.

    1 package instant vanilla pud-

    ding mix

1 cup sour cream (you can use

    low-fat if you like)

8 cups angel food cake, cubed

    Fresh mint leaves

    DIRECTIONS

    In a large bowl,

    combine the

    milk, pudding

    mix, orange peel

    and sour cream.

    Beat until thick-

    ened. Fold in

    the whipped

    cream. Place

    about four cups

    of the cubed

cake in the bottom of your

    serving dish. Arrange one

    layer of strawberries around

the sides of the dish and on

top of the cake. Top withhalf of the cream mixture.

Add the rest of the cake

    cubes, then another layer of

    strawberries and the rest of

the cream. Top with a few

    more berries and mint leaves

for garnish. Chill for at least

    two hours before serving.
