TÜà WxÑtÜàÅxÇà axãá The Year 11 Visual Art class has been working on their second Experimental Folio. The concept for the folio is “The Lateral’” and their focus has been the Non-Objective expression of place in a sculptural work. Works ranged from jelly forms to express an underwater environment to a precarious stack of crockery in response to the unease of the dinner table to the anorexia sufferer. Some of their artwork is presented below: Leonie McCulkin - Art Coordinator

XvÉÇÉÅ|vá ÉÇ t Uâwzxà With the release of the annual Federal Budget last Tuesday evening, the Year 12

Economics classes were given an opportunity to attend a Budget Breakfast Seminar the following day at Citipointe Christian College. Here they listened to two engaging guest speakers give their perspectives or analysis of the Budget, whilst being treated to a two course breakfast. It was an interesting morning and I’m sure the girls were able to gain a better understanding of what fiscal measures have been put in place for the next 12 months ( or at least until the next election….) “Listening with empathy and understanding” was put into practice last Monday when the Year 9 Geography classes heard from guest speakers from the Multicultural Development Association as part of their social justice-based unit “People on the Move”. Past pupil Tess Riddell (2006) who is now a Case Manager with the Association, spoke along with Lida Daliri who told her story about the plight of refugees. They outlined some of the support structures that an association like theirs offer to refugees. Thank you to Mrs Sonia Hereth for organising this very worthwhile opportunity for the students. The unit culminates with activities planned in the lead up to National Refugee Week, held from 16 June - 22 June. Mrs Diane Hanson - Geography Coordinator [xtw _|vx

It has come to our attention that a Headlice outbreak is appearing in the school. Parents could you please check your daughter’s hair and treat accordingly. Thank you. Helen Carty - Deputy Principal - Pastoral Care

`âá|v axãá  Late Entry to MWC - In recent weeks a number of students have forgotten instruments and returned to school quite late in the afternoon to collect them (around 6pm). While ground staff are willing to open the MWC occasionally, if they are still at school, we would ask that in this situation parents accompany girls, not send them in alone. Thanks - To all those parents, students, past students and friends who supported the Loreto Trivia Night on Saturday. It was one of our most successful Trivia Nights yet with almost 200 people attending and competing. Win or lose, great fun was had by all and there was already talk heard about coming back to test their luck and knowledge again next year! Upcoming events

This Thursday 23 May, the Clarinet Ensemble will be going to St Elizabeth’s at Tarragindi. They are holding an Under 8s celebration with the theme “Celebrating Community, Sharing Music, Movement and Culture, Think Locally”. We will be sending the Clarinet Ensemble to support this local school by performing at their 9:00am opening assembly. We will transport students directly from and back to the school by taxi and they would miss Periods 1 and 2 of classes that day. The students will be accompanied by their conductor, Ms Melissa Cox.

c 9 Y axãá Date Claimer Reminders - Don’t forget the following The RSVP date for the 2013 Great Gatsby Gala Ball is Friday, which means you only have a few days left to book. The 85th Anniversary ball to be held Saturday 1 June at Rydges Southbank is raising funds for stage one of the 2013 Capital Campaign. See the flyer in this newsletter for more information. The Sports Support Group will hold its next meeting on 28 May. If you are interested in helping Loreto continue to improve sports for all students then get along to room 605 on the bottom floor of the Gonzaga Barry Building at 7.30 pm next Tuesday. The meeting wishes to discuss fundraising to Solar Heat the Pool. This would extend the use of the pool considerably, thus providing an additional teaching and training space. We will also explore the introduction of Club Netball for Year 8 and 9 in 2014. All parents are most welcome to attend and we look forward to your input. Thank you. As outlined in a letter sent home earlier this term, students will leave Loreto at 8.40 am following homeroom and return to school at morning tea time. lxtÜ DE YÉÜÅtÄ When: Saturday 13 July, 2013 Venue: Grand Ballroom, Hilton Hotel, Elizabeth Street, City Time: 7.00 pm - 11.30 pm The Year 12 students are looking forward to their Formal with eager anticipation. This will be a special occasion for the Seniors and certainly a highlight of their final year at Loreto. A letter has already gone home about the evening and our expectations, to ensure a happy, safe and memorable evening is had by all.

The girls will be fully briefed about expectations of partners and behaviour and we ask that parents support us by escorting their daughters and partners to the venue at 7.00 pm and then picking them up at 11.30 pm. No one will be allowed to leave the venue before this time. We again remind you that the girls do not need additional forms of transport to get them to and from the venue.

Whilst the College does not support the girls attending ‘post parties’, we are fully aware that these celebrations occur. The safety of the girls is paramount and we urge you to ensure planned and careful supervision so as to avoid any potential harm. It is timely to remind parents about the issue of alcohol consumption by underage drinkers and that episodes of binge drinking can seriously harm the health of your daughters. Please speak with your daughters to ensure their safety.

We look forward to sharing this special occasion with your daughters and we hope that each girl has a most enjoyable evening that she will fondly remember for the years to come. Annie Diamond - Year 12 Coordinator

fÑÉÜàá WxÑtÜàÅxÇà axãá BSGSA Sport Soccer - Round 2 This week The Open A team and Junior A team play away and the Open C and Junior C teams play at home. The Open A and Junior A team both play Brigidine at Taringa Rovers, Indooroopilly. If students are being picked up from Indooroopilly, they must provide a signed note to Mr Jones, no later than the morning of the fixture. The away teams will return home @ 5:30-5:45pm depending on the traffic. The Open C and Junior C team both play Lourdes Hill at Annerley Soccer Club, 98 Victoria Terrace, Annerley. The home games will finish at 5:00pm and students need to be picked up at the venue. Students are reminded to bring their uniform, shin pads, mouth guards and water bottles. Good luck! Mr Chris Jones - Coordinator

Open A

Two training sessions and one practice game against Somerville House prepared our Open team to face our first competitor, Lourdes Hill. It is not easy for girls who have played together for a few seasons to adapt to a new coach and his European football philosophy of a fast, attacking and physical game. The players did well to execute what has been practiced for only two weeks and from the first minute on, every player was focused on an attractive, attacking form of football which resulted in three quick goals in the first half. The attackers relaxed a little bit during the second half but still put two more shots into the opposition's net. Sam in goal kept a clean sheet by making a few great saves. Madi, our captain, led by example and put in a great performance in the defense. Our midfield played well but still need to be more exact with the through-balls, and the strikers have to be more "ruthless" in front of the opposition goal in order to win us games against stronger opposition. R Hamernik - Coach

Junior A The Juniors A's started the season with a strong and convincing 4-0 win. The team played very well in patches and did extremely well as a team considering it was the first match, with four different players scoring goals. The team created a number of very good chances in both halves with some very good passages of play and some good passing. The midfield worked very hard and did a good job creating chances for our forwards, who made some good runs to get in behind the opposition’s back line. The opposition had a few chances to score with quick counter attacks, but each time the backs did well to prevent a shot. The team showed a lot of promise, and with continued hard work at training, should continue to grow as a team and do well this year. Anthony Costa - Coach

Junior C The Junior C Football team’s first game was on Wednesday. The girls gave their best throughout the whole game and despite being behind 4-1 in the first half, never gave up and only lost 5-3 at the end of the match. The three goals that the team scored were achieved through great teamwork. Well done girls! Luke Duncan - Coach

Cross Country CSGSSA Cross Country Meet - Will be held on Friday 31 May at Limestone Park Ipswich. Girls selected will be notified soon and a permission letter will be sent home to be returned before the meet. There will be a Cross Country breakfast on Wednesday 29 May at 7.00am. We would love parent assistance to help with the BBQ. Please contact Meg Stevens if you are able to assist. There will be no training on Wednesday or Thursday.

Congratulations - To the following girls who will be competing at the Metropolitan East Cross Country on Tuesday at Capalabla State College. We wish them all the best. 13 Yrs - Helena Beiers, 14 Yrs Taylor Chinn and Ciera Stafford, 15 Yrs Kate O’Sullivan, 16 Yrs Rebecca Marshall, 17 Yrs Mary-Kate Dennis, Erin Leask, Olivia Mastry, Emily Smallhorn, 18 Yrs Eloise Carroll and Celia Lane.

Congratulations - To Jessica Galpin (Year 9) who was selected in the Composite District 15 Yrs girls Basketball team. Jessica will be playing at the Regional Carnival in Brisbane on 30 May 2013.

Netball This Week’s Draw: 22 May

IMPORTANT REMINDER: All girls MUST have a note in early Wednesday morning (by 8.30am) if they are being picked up at the venue. Otherwise girls will return by bus to Loreto College, including the girls at Coorparoo courts.

Netball Results: Round 1 - 15 May Open A vs Mt Alvernia - A great win to the girls in defeating last year’s premiers 24 - 21, in the first round of the season. This was an exciting and close game with the score tied at the end of the third quarter. All team members showed great tenacity in defensive pressure. Nerves caused a few fumbles and it is encouraging to know we can play even better than this. Special mention goes to Annie Passingham, Allanah Jeffcoat and Mia Page for some exceptional and committed play in the last quarter which gave us the last push to victory. I was very proud of the girls and look forward to our next game. Mrs Meg Logan – Coach Open B - Were defeated by Mt Alvernia 21 - 11. Despite the score line, the girls played a great first game, only losing it with little mistakes. The cohesion on the court and the girls’ ability to take directions was phenomenal, especially as majority have not played together before. Looking forward to seeing the team develop with each week. Great job girls! Larissa Hughes – Coach Open C - Had a 26 - 6 win over Our Lady’s College. What a great game the girls had for their first game. All the girls played well especially Megan O'Reilly who had a great game in shooting. Sarah King played really well in defence stopping so many balls from getting through. Well done to everyone and keep up the effort girls. Karen Holahan - Coach Open D vs Lourdes Hill College - The girls had a tough match for their first game but persevered throughout. Julia Edwards had a great game in both ends of the court; attack and defence. The team Captain, Eloise Carroll proved to be a great support to the team throughout the game. Brittany Holahan - Coach

Intermediate A - Had a strong first week defeating Lourdes Hill 23 - 7. Although the score does not reflect it, possession was relatively even, making the girls work hard to get their goals. Hopefully the girls will learn from this and we will have another strong game next week. Magdaleine Ryan – Coach

Intermediate B - The team had a slow start to the season with an 11-7 loss to Mary MacKillop. The low scoring game is a testament to the countless intercepts and strong defence of both teams throughout the game. The girls have tremendous potential to improve as a team and find success this netball season. Bridget O’Connor – Coach

Intermediate C - The team started the season with a solid win over San Sisto 29 - 5. It was great to see the girls listen to feedback and then attempt to correct certain aspects of their game. The Intermediate C team is a team of great versatility, and reluctant shooters Alana and Emma proved to be instrumental in garnering the win. Tiana’s long, sharp shoulder passes and space awareness also helped strengthen the mid-court. It was a very impressive first game and good to finally see the team in action. Well done girls! I am now very excited for the rest of the season. Ashleigh O’Connor - Coach Intermediate D - The team had a fantastic start to the 2013 season, beating Mary Mackillop, 23 - 1. So far, I am very impressed with the team dynamics displayed during training and the game! I am looking forward to working with the girls to hopefully remain undefeated for the rest of the season. Great start girls! Emma Macleod – Coach Intermediate E – BYE Intermediate F (1) - Despite a good start to the 2013 season, the girls were defeated by Lourdes Hill College. Strong defensive efforts by Jamie Fletcher and Isabella Kubler made for a close match. Well done girls, looking forward to next week . Kate Mullins – Coach Intermediate F (2) - The Intermediate D team has begun their season with a win! While they struggled with the first quarter, the girls fought hard for the rest of the game to defeat Lourdes Hill 18 to 16. Alex White and Mikaela Keyser worked tirelessly in defense and fought hard for the rebounds. Overall the team should be very proud of their efforts. Great start to the season girls. Hannah Fowler - Coach Junior A - The team faced some stiff competition against St Rita's, losing a hard fought game 9 - 6. Defence from both teams was outstanding keeping the scores low. Our Loreto girls didn't have their spirit defeated however, with the pre game excitement carrying through after the final whistle when they proudly (and loudly) finished the afternoon with the Loreto war cry. Lyn Dixon- Coach Junior B – Displayed great teamwork and commitment for the first game despite the loss. It was pleasing to see the effort and enthusiasm the girls demonstrated throughout the game and their support for each other ensured they stayed within reach of the opposition for the majority of the game. The entire team demonstrated excellent defence work with numerous intercepts and pressure over the ball that allowed our attack to convert these much needed turnovers into points. Overall for the first game of the season, the girls were fantastic! Clare Gill - Coach Junior C - Began this season with a great match, with all players working together and trying their best. Unfortunately it was a close loss with San Sisto College winning 12 - 8. Special mention to Despina Grespos and Maggie Healy for stepping up and playing in both attack and defence. Stephanie Esprester - Coach Junior D - Were defeated by Lourdes Hill, 13 - 15. Many positives were taken from this first game, as well as areas that require some improvement! Grace Winch showed great versatility in playing in the centre court and as goal shooter/attack. Pheobe Reid Smith was electrifying in defense and attacked every contested ball with great intensity. A good platform on which to build for our next game. Mrs Jacqui Gold and Sarah Pettiford - Coaches

Results Round 1: 15 May

Open One Our season opening game was against Mt Alvernia’s finest. The game was played in great spirit with plenty of impressive stick skills on display. Due to a shortage of players through illness and prior hockey commitments, the girls had to slot into unfamiliar positions and they did this admirably. Ashley Mullins had a great inaugural game as goalie; her quick reflexes and agility keeping several scorching shots out. She must have been really enjoying the game as I am pretty sure I heard her singing through the grille of her helmet at one point! Emma Mission, Georgia Paroz and Lucy Powell all held their own against girls who were several years older, showing great tenacity and “ticker” in the way they played. Darcy McCowan held it all together at centre half with some meandering runs up the centre of the field and great linking offloads. Jemma “Stubbsy” Stubbs and Clare Griffiths capitalised on this and executed some great attacking runs into the circle as a result of Darcy’s accurate distribution of the ball. Leah Carey played a great supporting role on the wing using her pace and ball control well. She let loose several arrow straight crosses into the top of the scoring zone from the right pocket which were eagerly picked up by the forward line. The fixture result could have gone either way, but unfortunately luck was not on our side despite having many shots at goal. Mt Alvernia walked away with a 3 - 0 victory, but I am sure that they felt fortunate in getting the run of the green this week. Congratulations on a great first game, Loreto Open A. Matt Lourigan - Coach

OPEN TWO Loreto B has had a fantastic start to the season with a win this week against Brigidine B 8 - 0. All players worked well as a team to contain the majority of play in the opposition’s half. Well done! Ian Honour - Coach
