2017-18 Cheer Team Tryout Information

Cheer  Team  Tryout  Dates:    Tryout  1:

       Time:  May  5  @  5pm  &  May  6  @  8am    

Both  tryouts  will  be  held  at  the  Moody  Field  House,  please  stay  for  call  backs  and  interview  questions,  and  note  that  you  are  not  required  to  attend  both  tryouts.  

 The  team  will  be  named  on  Monday,  May  8th:  Check  www.goislanders.com  or  

the  Islanders  Cheer  Team  Facebook  for  a  list  of  the  final  team.    

Attire  Day  1-­‐       Females:  Plain  black  sports  bra,  black  spandex,  cheer  shoes,  natural  make-­‐up,  hair  all  the  way  up  with  a  black,  white,  Kelly  green,  or  royal  blue  bow.  May  wear  a                      t-­‐shirt  as  a  cover-­‐up  on  day  1,  but  only  Islander  colors  allowed.           Males:  Plain  black  t-­‐shirt,  black  shorts,  tennis  shoes,  and  must  be  cleanly  shaven/neatly  trimmed.    Day  2-­‐     Females:  Plain  royal  blue  sports  bra,  black  spandex,  cheer  shoes,  and  hair  half-­‐up  half-­‐down  curled  with  a  white  bow.         Males:    Plain  royal  blue  shirt,  black  shorts,  tennis  shoes,  and  must  be  cleanly  shaven/neatly  trimmed.  

 High  school  or  other  college’s  logos,  body  piercings,  jewelry  of  any  kind,  extreme  hairstyles  and/or  colors  are  not  acceptable  at  tryouts  or  during  the  year  as  an  Islander  Cheerleader.  Please  cover  tattoos  and  remove  all  piercings  prior  to  the  

arrival  of  tryouts.

Stunt  Tryout  Process:  Everyone  will  be  asked  to  do  3  advanced  or  elite  connected  skills  in  their  first  tryout  position.  You  will  then  switch  to  your  secondary  skill  and  perform  2  intermediate/advanced  skills.

 ***All  of  the  above  will  be  performed  on  Friday  night  or  Saturday  morning  in  the  Moody  Field  House.  There  will  be  a  first  round  of  tumbling  cuts  made  early  in  the  evening  before  we  begin  stunting.  Those  who  make  it  past  the  tumbling  cut  

will  be  allowed  to  stay  and  work  on  their  tryout  material.***    Interview:  During  tryouts  you  will  be  asked  to  participate  in  a  personal  interview.  Coach’s  and  judges  will  ask  different  questions  throughout  the  night  so  be  prepared  for  that  on  Friday  evening.    Video  (optional)  Submit  a  video  with  the  following:      Stunts-­‐  Must  show  2  positions  (ex:  main  base  &  back  spot  or  all-­‐girl  flyer  &  coed  flyer)  with  3  connected  elite  skills  (see  stunting  tryout  requirement  page  for  examples)        

Tumbling-­‐  Show  best  standing  and  running  skill  on  dead  mat,  grass,  and/or  hard  floor.  (Optional:  best  running  pass  on  spring  floor)  Jumps-­‐  Show  3  connected  elite  jumps.    Cheer  and/or  chant  (Females  Only)-­‐  Show  a  cheer  or  chant  showing  clean  motions,  enthusiasm,  and  voice  projection.

Video  must  be  submitted  no  later  than  May  5th  for  extra  points  during  the  tryout  process.

Prep  Clinic:  We  will  be  hosting  a  tryout  prep  clinic  and  campus  tour  on  Saturday,  February  4th.  The  cost  of  the  clinic  is  $25.00  and  includes  a  free  t-­‐shirt,  university  tour,  team  meet  and  greets  social  and  brunch  for  participant  and  parent,  as  well  as  a  private  performance  by  the  Islanders  Spirit  team.  We  will  teach  sidelines,  fight  song  and  have  an  open  gym  so  you  can  stunt  with  the  Islanders  cheer  team.  Go  to  goislanders.com  for  more  information.    Squad  Size:  For  the  2017-­‐2018  seasons  we  will  be  taking  between  14-­‐22.    Alternates:   Those   chosen  as   an  alternate  will   be   pulled  up   in   the   event   that   someone  does  not  get  accepted  to  the  university  or  turns  down  there  squad  position.   If  you  are  interested  in  being  an  alternate  please  make  sure  to  write  it  down  on  your  application.    Sporting  Season:  The  TAMUCC  cheer  team  cheers  at  all  home  volleyball  and  Men  and    Women’s  basketball  games  as  well  as  community  and  university  events.  We  also  travel  with  the  basketball  teams  when  they  attend  post-­‐season  tournaments.    Financial  Requirements:  The  university  provides  everything  a  TAMUCC  Cheer  Team  member  may  need  including  practice  wear,  shoes,  uniforms,  poms,  etc.  The  only  thing  that  you  will  be  asked  to  pay  is  your  cost  of  camp  which  is  $450.00,  raise  $200.00  during  summer  fundraising  activities,  as  well  as  participate  in  yearly  fundraising  events.  We  do  offer  scholarships  for  those  who  qualify.    Summer  Dates:  May  20th  payment  1  due  in  the  amount  of  $150.00  and  athletic  forms  due  to  office  (details  to  follow),  housing  forms,  and  final  day  to  commit  to  the  Islander  Cheer  Team    May  20st  mandatory  team  meeting,  uniform  fitting,  and  university  sponsored  physicals.  Please  note  that  you  must  have  insurance  by  this  date  and  you  must  be  accepted  to  the  university  by  this  date.    Required  Paperwork:  All  potential  first-­‐year  members  who  are  not  TAMUCC  students  must  bring  their  acceptance  letter  or  “A”  number  to  tryouts.  You  cannot  tryout  unless  you  have  applied  to  the  university  and  ALL  your  required  paperwork  is  in.    All  potential  first-­‐year  members  who  are  current  TAMUCC  students  must  bring  their  student  id  and  current  unofficial  transcript.    For  more  information  contact:  Melanie  Lowry:  Spirit  Teams  Head  Coach    [email protected]  (361)  825-­‐3417  Office    (361)  765-­‐5684  Cell  (361)  825-­‐3218  Fax
