Dear Cheer Candidate,

Welcome to cheer tryouts! You have chosen to try out for an activity which can be very fun and rewarding, but also time-consuming and difficult. Cheerleading is an activity for the highly motivated, enthusiastic, and healthy. It is one of the most time consuming activities at this high school. It is not an activity for students who have trouble maintaining good attendance and good grades. It requires excellent time management skills, endurance, athletic ability, and a real “sportsmanlike” attitude. Cheerleading can be a fun rewarding experience, a wonderful conditioner, and a great leadership builder for students who are prepared and willing to accept the responsibilities involved. In this packet you will find all the information you need in order to try out for the WHS Fall Cheer Squad. Please read everything carefully. Listed below are the requirements for trying out and the contents of this packet.

1. Class Standing: Each candidate must currently be in 8th-11th grade.

2. Grades: Each candidate must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0. You must make a copy of your semester report card and your midterm grades and turn it in with your questionnaire. Cheer candidates may not be failing a class at any time.

3. Class: Each candidate must plan on attending at least one class on campus. Outside classes cannot interfere with practice times. Schedule all running start, skills center and other classes accordingly.

4. Coach Evaluation Form: Each candidate must have a former or current coach fill out the Coach Evaluation Form. This form will be found in this packet.

5. Teacher Recommendation Form: Each candidate must submit a confidential evaluation form to six of his/her teachers. At least five of these forms must be returned. Make sure you put your name in the appropriate place before you give the forms to your teachers and provide your teachers with an envelope. These forms can be delivered to WHS. If you have fewer than six current teachers, you may use past teachers.

6. Questionnaire: Each candidate must fill out the enclosed questionnaire. Please type your responses. This is due March 16th .

7. Physical: Each candidate must turn in a copy of a new physical to the Athletic Office. You may not try out without a current physical on file with the Athletic Office. You must also have a current ASB Card and pay the $10 sports fees. You must have a clearance card in order to participate in tryouts.

8. Physical Tryouts: Each candidate will learn a variety of skills during the week of March 16th. These skills will be assessed on March 20th. The tryouts will be closed. Only senior cheerleaders and judges will be allowed to watch tryouts. The judging panel will be comprised of cheer coaches from other schools, staff members, former cheerleaders, the assistant coach

and myself. During the physical tryout, female candidates will be asked to perform a series of jumps, a short chant to which you make up the moves, a performance cheer, a short dance, and any tumbling skills they have. Male candidates will perform a modified version of the girls tryouts, where they will do jumps and male cheer motions. Male candidates will use a megaphone for one of the cheers. In addition, male candidates will be asked to do a practice toss with one of the senior cheerleaders. No jewelry of any kind can be worn during tryouts. If you are wearing jewelry, you will be asked to remove it no matter what.

9. Parent Meeting: Each candidate must have at least one parent attend one of the scheduled parent meetings. This is mandatory. A parent permission slip is also included in this packet.

10. Interview: Each candidate will be interviewed on either Tuesday, March 17th or Wednesday the 18th after school by a panel which includes the assistant coach and myself. Candidates will be told of their interview time on Monday, March 16th.

11. Calendar: A calendar for the Spring and Summer are included in this packet. Please note all dates carefully. While some flexibility is possible, some dates cannot be changed. Any fundraisers scheduled after tryouts are required for all new team members. If a previous engagement keeps you from attending a Spring fundraiser, you will not be eligible for funds raised at that fundraiser.

All August practices are mandatory except in cases of severe illness (requires a parent note and/or phone call). Missing a practice in August for any reason other than illness will result in sitting out the first football game. Attendance at cheer camp is also mandatory. Any cheerleader not attending camp will miss the first three football games. Do not schedule senior pictures at a time which would conflict with camp or practice.

12. Athletic Code Contract: Upon trying out for the squad, all candidates will sign a copy of the Athletic Code (available in the Athletics office). This code will be in effect the rest of their high school career. Cheerleaders are not allowed to attend events where drugs and/or alcohol is being consumed illegally. The penalties for being caught at one of these events are severe and cannot be bargained.

13. Spirit Sign: Each candidate will paint a general spirit sign using materials provided by WHS. Signs must be at least four (4) feet in length and should promote positive school spirit. If you have any questions about the above requirements or anything in this packet, please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you for your interest. Cheerleading is an amazing and rewarding experience, and I look forward to possibly working with you next year!

Sincerely,

Danielle Schafer-ClokeHead Cheerleading CoachWenatchee High SchoolE-Mail: [email protected]

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Your son/daughter has made the decision to try out for the 2015-2016 Cheer and Stunt Squad. Cheerleading is a big responsibility involving much time, dedication, some money, and especially the understanding and cooperation of parents. Listed below are the items a cheerleader and his/her parents need to consider before tryouts:

Time: Time is spent practicing almost immediately after tryouts, during summer vacation, and almost every day after school when the new year begins. Traveling to and from games, matches and meets also takes up time. Attendance at summer cheer camp is mandatory for all cheerleaders. The entire WHS cheer team cheers for all football games, both home and away. The squad is divided for volleyball games and other athletic matches on a rotating basis. A member of the squad is required to be at all assigned athletic events. Sign painting, pep assembly organization, banquets, and school combine to make time a key issue.

In the event of extended season play, cheerleaders are expected to continue representing their school by practicing, attending, and cheering. These extended season games are mandatory. Because of the tight scheduling involved in the playoff games, there may be as little as 1 or 2 days advance notice. Please assist your cheerleaders in remaining flexible during these few weeks. Playing at the district and state levels is very prestigious and require the total support of our squad.

Academics: As a Cheerleader, your child will be involved in a variety of activities which consume a great deal of time. However, academics come first. If, at any time, your child is not maintaining a GPA of 2.0 or is failing any one class, he/she will be suspended from the squad until his/her grades are satisfactory. The official contract details penalties for failing to maintain grades. The WHS Athletic Department conducts official grade checks and has the full authority to suspend any team member from participation if his/her grades do not meet standard.

Finances: Every attempt will be made to keep the cost of cheerleading/stunting to a minimum, but there will be some cost. Warm-ups, uniforms, spanks, poms, nylons, socks, and any other items which will be kept by the squad member must be paid for. These expenses run at approximately $700 for new squad members. Previous varsity squad member expenses will run at approximately $300. Cheerleaders are also responsible for paying for camp ($350). Other miscellaneous (but not mandatory) expenses include food, presents, pictures, etc. Squad members must also have an ASB card, physical exam (due by March 16th), and medical insurance in order to be eligible. This amount must be paid in full by the first day of the next school year. A $100 deposit is due by March 23rd for all members who make the team.

Within one week of our fitting for uniforms, you will have a fully itemized bill detailing how much is to be paid to Wenatchee High School. Your deposit will be noted.

We will conduct fundraisers throughout the spring and summer to offset some of these costs. Fundraises conducted during the school year, with the exception of Tolo, are for team purposes, such as Breast Cancer Awareness, stunt clinics, etc..

We do have several fundraisers on the horizon which the cheerleaders can use to help cover these expenses. Some of these activities are Tolo (a dance), a car wash, a yard sale, scratch cards, Pizza Hut cards, and Krispy Kreme sales. Some of these are marked on the calendar already.

Jobs/Non-Cheer Activities: Members of the squad may not have a job or outside activity that conflicts with cheerleading. The coach will not excuse a squad member from any cheer event, including practice, because of a job or outside activity. While attempts can be made to accommodate special events, there is no guarantee and the team member may face penalties for missing games and practices. We will have a set practice schedule and a set cheering schedule, so there should be plenty of notice. Please do not schedule doctor’s appointments, work, or other activities during these times. The schedule will be handed to the team members and posted on the team web site.

Parents: Squad members will need the full cooperation and support of their parents in the areas listed above. Parents need to realize the amount of time which will be spent away from home. Being a member of the WHS cheer squad is a privilege, not a right, and if your son or daughter does not fulfill the required duties, then that squad member will be disciplined according to the policies laid out in the Cheer Contract. I would ask that all parents be supportive of our desire to instill a sense of dedication and a strong work ethic in each of our team members by supporting coaching decisions and athletic office requirements. This includes areas such as following the dress code, attending practices and athletic events, meeting athletic standards, and following NFHS safety guidelines.

You, as a parent, also need to understand that you will be asked to donate your time to chaperone dances, supervise fundraisers, etc. Help your son/daughter be on time to every required event. There may also be times where we need parent transportation to specific sporting events or competitions. Every effort will be made to make sure that our team members utilize school transportation, but this may not always happen. Cheerleaders are never allowed to drive themselves to a sporting event or camp.

Also, please expect your son/daughter to be a positive influence on the squad. Cheerleading is an amazing and rewarding experience which teaches several skills necessary to succeed in life. I look forward to working with your child!

All of this is quite overwhelming but the benefits are huge. These young people learn invaluable leadership skills and the leadership component is one that we hope to continue to build upon. The experiences are totally unique. While these events are time-consuming, it is an important element of the concept of cheer “leading”. Participants will gain valuable experiences through leadership that will provide life-long learning.

In addition to the financial and time commitments, cheerleading at WHS means a personal commitment to a drug and alcohol free lifestyle. This also means that attendance at an event where young people are consuming drugs and/or alcohol is sufficient evidence to be sanctioned. We follow WIAA (Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association) rules, NFHS (National Federation of High School) rules and the WHS Athletic policy for interscholastic activities just as any other sport. In order to maintain a respectable and orderly membership, cheerleaders will be held accountable for the rules as set forth by the coach(es), administration, school district, WIAA, and NFHS regarding attendance, punctuality, attire, decorum, etc.

Transportation: Transportation will be provided by the district or designated parent volunteers to and from any and all events. Cheerleaders may not provide their own transportation or be transported by another student to and/or from any sporting event.

The final decision will be posted on the web site the morning after tryouts. I will gladly speak with any candidate who does not make the squad and offer suggestions for improvement. Specific scores, however, will be kept confidential.

By signing the attached form, you give your son/daughter permission to try out for the Wenatchee High School Cheer/Stunt Squad.

Sincerely,

Danielle Schafer-ClokeHead Cheerleading CoachWenatchee High SchoolE-Mail: [email protected]

WHS 2015-2016 Cheer and Stunt Team Tryouts

I have read and fully understood the requirements of being a member of the Wenatchee High School Cheer/Stunt Squad and hereby give permission for my son/daughter to try out.

I also understand that my child will need to have a current physical on file with the WHS Athletic Department in order to try out. I further understand that my child is not to practice any stunts without the cheerleader coach in attendance. Stunts will only be practiced during the official tryout clinic periods.

WENATCHEE HIGH SCHOOLCHEERLEADING PROGRAM

2015-2016 Constitution

Mission Statement: The purpose of the Wenatchee High School Cheer Squad is to increase the school spirit at Wenatchee High School, encourage and support the athletic program and the athletes within that program, develop leadership skills, foster an environment of teamwork within the squad, entertain and motivate sports spectators, improve individual physical well-being, and have fun. A member of the cheer/stunt squad must demonstrate responsibility and enthusiasm, have high morals and a genuine concern for other students, and desire to work cooperatively within a team.

Article I. Role of CheerleadersCheerleaders are expected to perform at a number of functions at Wenatchee High School. The various roles can be described as: 1) an A.S.B. leadership role; 2) a performing group; 3) a crowd participation leader; and 4) a competitor (optional each year).

A.S.B. Leadership: Cheerleaders are seen as school leaders and are thus required to act in a manner befitting such a position.

Performing Group: Cheerleaders will be expected to fulfill a performing function at assemblies and athletic contests. They will be expected to function as a team in presenting a variety of routines to entertain and help motivate spectators and athletes at appropriate times during the year.

Crowd Participation Leader: Cheerleaders will plan and execute a set series of activities designed to include spectators in the support of our various teams. These activities will include dance routines, short chants, cheers, and stunts. A close working relationship with the band is crucial.

Competitor: Each year, the cheerleaders and coaches will decide of they want to be a competitive team. This will have a great impact on the level of commitment of all involved.

Article II. Description of Cheer SquadThe Cheer squad will consist of one group of girls and boys for the full year. The size of the Varsity squad will be 8-20 girls with a number of boys to be determined. Girls must be on the squad for the full year. Girls and boys will cheer for all sports at the high school. This will include all varsity football (home and away) and basketball games and wrestling matches, as well as a rotating responsibility for home volleyball games, swim meets, soccer games, cross country meets, bowling meets, and district and state competitions, depending upon the season. Members of the Cheer/Stunt squad will not be able to participate in a sport during the season they are part of the squad. All cheerleaders would be able to and are encouraged to participate in a sport anytime they are not a member of the squad.

For sports other than football, basketball, and wrestling, a schedule for these activities will be developed at the beginning of each season by the squad and the coach.

All cheerleaders are required to paint signs each week in support of the athletes and/or school events. Each squad member must complete his/her sign by the Monday before the sporting event. Not painting a sign will result in not cheering that week.

Article III. Cheer Standards A. Be polite and respectful to everyone at all times. You are in the public eye at all times. B. Show all teachers and coaches the proper respect. Do not talk while they are talking. If you are late to class (unexcused), you will be asked to write a letter of apology for your tardiness. This will also apply to any other discipline issues. C. Always accept the responsibility for your actions. How you respond to your circumstances defines your character. D. Believe in discipline, conditioning, commitment, teamwork, high standards, yourself, and your teammates. E. Always put your team first. F. Do not ever let yourself give or be less than your best! G. Be mentally, physically, and emotionally prepared to handle the responsibilities of being a Wenatchee High School Cheerleader. H. Take pride and feel honored to be a Wenatchee High School Cheerleader!

Article IV. Regulations and Guidelines A. Academics 1. All members of the cheer/stunt squad will maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average of at least 2.0. Failure to comply with the academic standards set forth by the Athletic Office will result in suspension of eligibility. Cheerleaders who do not maintain a GPA of at least 2.0 will be required to attend tutoring sessions or to arrange private study sessions. 2. Those cheerleaders who attend classes outside of WHS will need to provide the coach with a way to check their grades. 3. Squad members must attend all classes in order to participate at a practice or athletic event.

B. Conduct Members of the squad must always demonstrate exemplary conduct on and off campus and adhere to the standards of good citizenship. A squad member’s actions represent the squad, student body, school, and community. 1. All squad members must sign the athletic code which governs athlete behavior. 2. Cheerleading is a year-long commitment. There is no off-season.

C. Relationship With Coach The cheerleading/stunt coach is responsible for all cheerleading activities. All planning (i.e. practice schedules, fundraisers, summer camp, uniforms, etc.) will

be coordinated through him/her. The coach has the final say in any decision. Cheerleaders are responsible for keeping the coach abreast of anything that could impact the effectiveness of the squad. The coach will be responsible for keeping the administration and faculty informed of cheer/stunt activities and concerns. There is to be no stunting without a coach present.

D. Appearance 1. Uniforms should be presentable at all times: ironed, cleaned, and ready for use. 2. The complete and correct uniform must be worn at school the day of the game, as well as at the game. 3. Uniforms should only be worn as uniforms when representing Wenatchee High School and may not be loaned to nonmembers. 4. Neatness in appearance will be expected. All hair must be up off of your shoulders and face and neatly secured. Game day hair styles will be determined by the coach and captains. Jewelry or glitter of any kind is not allowed. Uniform game hairstyles will be determined by captains. 5. Any damage to the uniform is the responsibility of the cheerleader. 6. Uniforms may not be loaned to any nonmember. This includes fleeces, jackets, shoes, and camp clothing. 7. Cheer shoes may only be worn during cheer activities such as games and practices. 8. Each cheerleader must be uniform in appearance and wear a team-designated outfit on game days and practices. E. Game Behavior Failure to comply with the behavior guidelines listed below will result in being pulled from the game. Repeated behavior will be addressed by the coach and the Wenatchee School District Discipline Action Chart. 1. Personal grooming in front of the crowd is not allowed. You may not touch your hair! Make sure it is set before you go in front of the crowd. 2. Do not chew gum. 3. Do not eat while performing in front of the crowd. Water bottles only are acceptable. 4. All members must be present in their formation during all games and organized cheers. You must be in position one minute before the end of half-time. 5. Do not quarrel in front of the crowd. 6. Do not swear or make negative comments to officials, players, coaches, or the crowd. 7. Avoid “coziness” with boyfriends or girlfriends during games. 8. Know all dances, chants, and cheers. All cheerleaders must pass a test at the beginning of each season which will cover motions, dances, cheers, chants, and jumps. A cheerleader who is not fully proficient in all of these areas will not cheer until he/she is ready. 9. Know and understand the rules of the game for which you are cheering.

10. If a player is injured on the field or court, give player recognition. No cheers should be done during an injury time-out. 11. Pay close attention to the action of the game and other squad members. 12. Follow the captains and do not tell them what chants you want or do not want to do. You may offer suggestions, but the final call is up to them. F. Game Attendance 1. Football: All cheerleaders will attend every varsity game, including post season play-offs. 2. Basketball: All cheerleaders must attend every home varsity game. In the event of post season play-offs, all cheerleaders will cheer at home and away games. 3. Wrestling: All cheerleaders will attend all home matches, tournaments, and post season matches on a rotating basis as scheduled. 5. Assigned cheerleaders must be at all meets, matches, and games 1 hour before they begin and must stay until the event concludes. 6. All other sporting events will be scheduled on a rotating basis to be attended by the entire team. G. Jobs 1. Jobs are acceptable only if they do not interfere with cheerleading responsibilities. 2. During the school year, the squad will be expected to be available until 6:30 p.m. after school each designated practice day. Additional practices may be scheduled as needed, but will be done at least two weeks in advance to be mandatory.

H. Team Discipline In order to keep a cohesive team and to be the best possible squad, a discipline plan is necessary. Possible infractions include unexcused absences from practices, games or fundraisers; defiance; verbal abuse; tardies; truancy; and abuse of controlled substances. The attendance and tardy policy is stated below. All other infractions are addressed in the Wenatchee School District Discipline Action Chart. The following behaviors are nonnegotiable: 1. Tardies a. A tardy is defined as being up to ten (10) minutes late to a practice, a game, a fundraiser, or any other scheduled activity. Being on time includes being dressed and ready to go for the activity. Squad members should arrive at practice in the proper attire. b. If a late arrival to practice is inevitable due to school, family, or medical issues, the coach must be informed as soon as possible. This notification must come from a parent or the individual squad member.

2. Absences a. The only excused absences from practice, a game, a fundraiser, or any other scheduled activity will be for illness, injury, family emergency, or, in some cases, a school activity. The coach must be notified as soon as possible for a school related activity. Only the cheerleader or his/her parent may notify the coach. Messages delivered by another squad member will automatically count as unexcused absences. Emergencies will be addressed on a case-by-case basis. b. An unexcused absence will result in suspension from the week’s activities, no matter what week it is. This may include Homecoming, etc. c. Three unexcused absences will result in expulsion from the squad. d. In the unlikely event that a member of the squad is suspended from an athletic event, that person must still attend the event dressed in warm-ups, but will sit with the coach and perform miscellaneous activities to be determined by the coach. e. An unexcused absence during the summer months will result in the squad member missing the first home football game. f. If a squad member is absent from school, he or she may not participate in any event that evening. g. A message must be left at the school specifically for the coach. The attendance office does not automatically notify the coach of a cheerleader’s absence. h. Missing the practice immediately preceding a football or basketball game will result in sitting out that game no matter what the reason for absence.

I. Travel 1. If a rooter bus has been scheduled and filled, cheerleaders are required to ride the rooter bus to and from away events. 2. Parents may be asked to assist with transportation or vans will be driven by the coach and/or other faculty members to cheer events. 3. Food expenses for regular season games are the responsibility of the squad members. 4. Cheerleaders may not transport themselves to away events. 5. A bus will transport the cheerleaders to all away football games.

J. Fundraising All members of the squad are required to participate in raising funds to pay for items such as competition entry fees, rooter poms, mats, and promotional items. All items to be kept by the squad members must be paid for. Fundraisers include, but are not limited to, a mini cheer camp, Tolo, car washes, and yard sales.

K. Squad Officers Several officer positions will be available to all members of the squad. If a squad member wishes to hold one of these positions, then he/she must submit a typewritten letter to the coach explaining why he/she would be a good candidate for the position. The position of Captain will be decided upon by the coach. An officer’s duties remain constant year-round. A mandatory officer’s meeting will be held every two weeks. 1. Captain(s): The Cheer Squad Captain(s) will be responsible for coordinating practice times, distributing messages, assisting the coach in various activities, assigning signs and other weekly duties, setting the tone for practices, and running meetings. The Coach will choose one - four members to share this position based upon leadership skills and interaction with the squad. The captain will have much additional responsibility and needs to be able to be mature enough to handle this position. 2. Fundraising Coordinator: The Fundraising Coordinator will work closely with the A.S.B. treasurer to ensure the cheer/stunt budget is balanced. He/She will also be responsible for meeting with the Parent Booster club, filling out fundraiser petition forms, scheduling fundraisers, and helping to fill out purchase orders. 3. Assembly Coordinator: The Assembly Coordinator will work closely with the A.S.B. Assembly Coordinator to ensure all pep assembly planning is taken care of. These duties will include delegating responsibilities, deciding upon activities and competitions, and contacting participants. Please note that the person who fills this position does not necessarily plan all of the pep assemblies. 4. Secretary: The Secretary will be responsible for recording the minutes of the officer’s meetings and publishing a quarterly newsletter regarding the cheer squad’s activities. He/She must also keep track of birthdays and other major events on the squad calendar. The Secretary will also take attendance at practice and track of tardies and absences. 5. Historian: The Historian will be responsible for keeping a record of all major events throughout the year in the form of a scrapbook. The scrapbook will be presented to the squad at the end of the year. L. Varsity Letter Each member of the Varsity Cheer Squad is eligible to receive a varsity letter. To earn a letter, each cheerleader must complete and attend all their scheduled events and games. Excused absences are the only exception. A varsity letter cannot be earned if the member has not fulfilled his/her duties in an acceptable manner. If a cheerleader is injured and still attends the game, this counts as cheering at the game for lettering purposes. If a cheerleader misses more than one football game, one wrestling match, or two basketball games, the cheerleader will not be eligible for a letter. All policies in the Wenatchee School District Discipline Action Chart will be followed in addition to the code of conduct developed by the squad. Violating the athletic code will result in automatically losing eligibility to receive a Varsity letter.
