On the price sheet, Scroll to yellow cells in column A and place an "X" next to the model you are shopping.Place an X to the left of any options you want underneath the model.Scroll down and X next to any options you want. If your option is not shown, you can add it below the options already shown (be sure and add msrp and invoice prices).

You can add your state's sales tax rate, Motor Vehicle department licensing rate (CA is roughly 1% of sale price) and any fixed-amount fees, to compute an approximate Out-The-Door price

Scroll back to the top and notice the MSRP (which you can ignore, but it helps your dealer be sure all the options boxes are ticked)Notice the Invoice, "dealer cost" (after holdbacks), and VIP price.

Once you get quotes on your build, add them in cells B4:C4 and below (clear out the bids I got)Columns I:N show various ways of looking at your quoted price, including the approximate dealer profit (before expenses)Some folks are reporting a dealer profit of only $400-$500, or > $1000 below invoice.

The hardest part of using this tool is getting the the dealer's quote right.Most dealers add a doc (document) fee. ADD it to his quote before reporting on your great price.If the "finance person" talks you into a LoJack, or paint/fabric protection, or an extended warranty, ADD the cost to your quote.If your quote depends on a trade-in, this tool won't work unless...Use KBB and Craig's List etc. to determine how much you could get for your trade if you sold it yourself.Adjust the quote by the difference between the fair market value (private party) and the dealer's offer on your tade inDon't include taxes and government fees in your quote. There are over 4500 separate taxing agencies in the US alone, and the number changes constantly. Only YOU and your dealer can figure this out, so leave it out of your comparisons.A separate OTD figure can be approximated (if you care) by entering in your local sales tax, and your Motor Vehicle registration rate and fixed fees (if any). These numbers aren't needed to compare dealers.Some dealers won't state a number. They may say "500 under invoice", or $1000 off MSRP. I consider these non-responsive, as you never know what the real number will be once you arrive at the dealership.If your state has an online fee calculator, use it before writing out that check. In CA, dealers are not required to refund over-estimates of state taxes and fees. Some will pad this figure by a couple hundred dollars!
