Zach has really taken this to heart. He struggled for a while to figure how and where he could best serve and Peace Corps was the answer for him. Their logic was that if the price was higher then less people would be able to buy the product. So the volunteers suggested waiting a few months and then selling the jam after mango season was over, that way more people would be able to buy it (at the marked up price now that it was out of season) and there would be no other jam on the market. But the Malians said that doesn't make sense, since they have food now they should sell it so nobody goes hungry now. The jam ended up being sold at cost, and nobody came out ahead. The volunteers explained that now those who made the jam got no money; the local people said that it doesn't matter because they sold their product and the season was over. Out the Study Window by Rev. Richard Miller

This Stewardship season I will introduce a sermon series entitled “TheSearch for Happiness.” We will be focused on the opening wordsfrom Paul’s letter to the Philippians. I will attempt to show that whatwe believe is not stuffy, archaic words – but the very truth of God thatmatters for our lives today. I intend to show you that what we believedefines how we live. Christians today, much like the Christians of thefirst century, need to be clear about what they believe and why it matters. Indifference here is a matter of life and death.

What Christians have primarily believed for two-thousand years, willbe an exercise of extreme importance. If we really believe what Godhas revealed to us in Jesus, then everything changes – life is turned

upside down and inside out. This is the good and dangerous news of gospel. WhatChristians believe is “perilous” and “exciting!” Join me as we explore this “Searchfor Happiness” we all seem to be on, in all our varied ways; and what it looks like. Then, be ready to see through the spectacles of faith, how fleeting the world’s happiness is and what God yearns for us to find.

Get Out & Join Feet First!FPC’s walking fellowship walks for an hour Saturday mornings on the beautiful trails in the Quad Cities. Everyone is welcome to put ontheir walking shoes and join us at 8:00 AM.

“When we talkabout thepoverty thatmany Malianslive in, it shouldbe noted thatthis kind of attitude is why. Without profit thosewho took the

time to make the jam have nothing to show for it, butthey don't look at it that way. The food was sold, andtherefore eaten, so the job was done.

“After three months here, I still have a hard time taking things more than one day at a time. Part of it is settling into a new community and new home, part of it is my daily struggles sitting next to my ownexpectations for my service. It's a lot to digest and accept. The culture shock has begun to wear off, which is scaring me a bit; it signifies a transition to amore permanent mentality. My post to Facebook theother day was true, I really am dreaming of home, and it makes getting out of bed in the morning thatmuch more difficult.

“There is always a silver lining though. I sit herenow, in my hammock, at 10:30 at night on Thursday,September 10, and I can stare at the night sky untilthe mosquitos suck me dry. The stars are beyond brilliant. The Milky Way appears every night thereisn't cloud cover, and it’s a shame I can't get a picture.

I'm in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by mudhuts, devoid of cell service, speaking a language Ibarely understand, often bored out of my mind. And at the end of the day when I would normally befeeling defeated and dejected, I look up at the nightsky and behold beauty I can't find anywhere else onthe planet.”

What message would you like to share with the congregation of FPC? “This place is quite different from the church communityI grew up with. There is a different language and religion, new food, more children (half the country isbelow 20 years old), no electricity or running waterand it's very, very hot. However, one of the pointsbrought up in training is that we all have three sets ofvalues: Personal, Cultural, and Universal. Universalvalues are those that we all share amongst ourselves, and part of my job is to connect myself to othersusing the values that we all share. I'm happy to saythat many of those values (the need to be protected, loved and heard) I learned from my time at FPC.”
