Grant Funds Available The Deacons’ Endowment Fund The Deacons’ Endowment Fund (DEF) was established to help groups and organizations within the First Presbyterian Church community that are developing new mission and outreach programs by providing seed money in the form of matching grants. What is the Deacons’ Endowment Fund? These funds are awarded for the purpose of helping to establish new mission, outreach, pastoral care, and spiritual development programs within our church community. What type of grant is available? The DEF grants are designated to help defray the start-up cost of new projects or programs according to guidelines established by the Board of Deacons. Programs or projects need to be of an ongoing nature rather than a one-time event. Any money that is awarded is in the form of a matching grant. In other words, funding from other sources should be part of the initial planning process. The maximum grant that can be awarded is $5,000. Who can apply? Grants can provide funding to any organization or group within the FPC community that is trying to start a new mission or outreach program or project within the church community. How does one go about applying for a grant? First each group, individual, or organization should establish a projected budget for the program, create a description of the program goals as well as an outline of how those goals will be achieved, and an organizational structure. These are critical elements of the process. A grant application form must then be completed and submitted for consideration by the Board of Deacons. The grant application process will be open for the period May 15 - July 15, 2015. If you have questions about DEF grants or applications, information is available through the church office, at the Welcome Desk, the Deacons’ Corner, the church’s website at www.fpcdavenport.org, or from Linda Larson ([email protected], 563-332-7703). Prayer Vigil for Victims of Violence Sunday, May 31, 7:00 PM

Join with fellow Christiansfrom our PUNCH churchesfor a prayer vigil at FirstPres., May 31, from 7:00-7:30 PM. Please use the porte cochere entrance

by the west parking lot. We will pray for people inour country, and for families and friends who arevictims of violence. Let us pray for God’s healingfor victims, and let us bear witness to the senselessviolence in our country.

One Day at First PresbyterianChurch Project We are collecting short narratives from churchmembers singling out one day never to be forgottenby that church member. Church member submissionswill potentially be included in our book! Blankforms are available in the church office and at the Welcome Desk. Linda Meadors, Heritage Committee Chairperson, shares her one day memory as an example:

“The one day in my First Presbyterian Churchlife which I will never forget was September 11,2001. I was home alone when I learned of thetragedy in New York City, Washington, D.C., and the hijacked flights. After calling my familymembers who all live out of town, I immediatelydrove to the church to seek comfort from ourclergy and other members. A special worshipservice was organized for the evening and I feltGod’s presence as we tried to understand whathad occurred and what the future might bring.”

NOTE: You may also email your “One Day at FPC”memory to Carolyn Draper-Math ([email protected]).

Prayer Vigil

You may or may not have known that a candlelight vigil is an outdoor assembly of people carrying candles, held near sunset in order to show support for a specific cause. Such events are typically held either to protest the suffering of somemarginalized group of people, or in memory of a life or lives lost to some disease, disaster, massacre or other tragedy. In the latter case, the event is often called a candlelight memorial. Candlelight vigils are seen as a nonviolent way to raiseawareness of a cause and to motivate change, as well as uniting and supporting those attending the vigil.

What you may or may not also know, is that the idea of a prayer vigil comes from the early church when early Christianscelebrated Easter with the Easter Vigil. The Easter Vigil has four movements:

(1) the Service of Light, a celebration of the light of Christ at which a new fire is kindled from which the Paschal Candleis lit,

(2) the Service of Readings, which includes as many as nine readings from the grand story of salvation of the HebrewScriptures and the New Testament interspersed with psalms and canticles, silence and prayers,

(3) the Service of Baptism, the primary annual occasion for baptisms (particularly in the early church) and a time for thereaffirmation of the baptismal covenant and

(4) the Service of the Eucharist, a joyous feast in the presence of the risen Christ and an anticipation of the eschatologicalbanquet of the realm of God.

Over the past year we have been holding Prayer Vigils to raise awareness about violence in our community and world. While our prayer vigils do not include the Service of Baptism and the Service of the Eucharist modeled by the early church Easter Vigil, we do include a Service of Light as we light candles, and the Service of Readings in which the Hebrew Scriptures and New Testament Scriptures are interspersed with Psalms, and silence, and prayers. Please join us the last Sunday of each month at 7:00 PM under the Port Cochere entrance to the sanctuary as we hold vigil for the victims of violence in our community and in our world.

The Good Friday Tenebrae service of shadows has become a cherished Holy Week tradition of FirstPresbyterian Church. The Good Friday orchestra is made possible solely through a generous bequestfrom the Howard and Bernice Wiebener estate. They were long-time members of this church andtheir daughter, Candace, who grew up at First Presbyterian and is a professional musician, regularlyreturns to play violin with the orchestra. To God Be the Glory!

If you missed the Good Friday Tenebrae Service, you may watch it on the church’s Vimeo channel at:https://vimeo.com/channels/fpcdavenport
