In the first chapter of John’s gospel we encounter a curious passage of scripture where Jesus notices some disciples who are beginning to follow him. He turns and asks them, “What are you looking for?” They respond by asking, “Rabbi, where are you staying?” What is curious about this passage is that Jesus doesn’t tell them where he is staying. Out the Study WindowI recently reflected on the wonderful by-line that shows up on our bulletin every Sunday morning which states, “First Presbyterian Church.A place to belong! Where faith is nurtured, curiosity encouraged, diversity welcomed, and all are loved.” I thought it might be helpful to unpack those self-identified phrases.

Two things to always bear in mind: 1) We are a church which has agreat deal of theological diversity among our members. 2) We havemembers with quite different views on social concerns. What matters tome is not that everyone in the congregation thinks like me--an obviousimpossibility, and not really desirable anyway since I have much to learnfrom other people's perspectives. What matters most is whether it is aplace where anyone can feel welcome, and where differing theologies

and ideas are at least respected and openly explored. For me, a church is part of a journey rather than a destination. I also think the earliest Christians got it right. They never believed that Jesus started a church. They believed in “The Way” Jesus lived and loved, and they tried to emulate his loving example.

The theological pluralism around here sometimes makes things odd for first-time visitors. Depending on theday, you might hear a pastor talking about how the church is the resurrected body of Christ; or another pastormay give a very orthodox interpretation of the doctrine of the Trinity; or a Christian Education Director willshare views on the links between candles and the Bible. Most who come to worship consider that either awarning or an invitation, whichever way it strikes you. :)

We might also call ourselves “Progressive Christians,” and I’d like to think that we all know what that means, but I know we don’t. I certainly don’t always know and I’m the minister! I do know that when we all tookthat step to leave behind the security of not questioning anything, toward questioning the assumptions that theBible contained the real story, and the only story of the beginning and of the end times, and that it had all beencarefully planned and was watched over by a God in the heavens, made the speeds at which we now travelmuch accelerated and often confusing. That is why it is essential we stay grounded within ourselves.

one of the ways that we can help ourselves stay grounded is to find places to talk about “the way it is.” Deciding to be a theologically progressive church meant that we gave ourselves permission to ask questionsabout the ideas that trouble us. We do that, and in the process we’re creating a climate of fellowship that allows us to take the risks of examining those ideas and beliefs so that we can gain greater clarity. We aren’tyour typical church. We ask and talk about questions that few other churches do. But we’re honest and we’reencouraging one another to be who they need and want to be. I also trust that we’re unleashing a spirit offriendship and support that makes it a safe place in which people can grow. No matter who you are, or whereyou are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.

We are utterly convinced that individual differences enrich our lives and invigorate our mission. While we stillstrive to do the work of Jesus in the world, we also value the truths and examples learned from other religioustraditions and are committed to using our lives to make a positive difference in the world.

Forthose of us in the Midwest, we have the joy of experiencing the extremes of the seasons. At the same time, weneed to have continuity within our lives. Meditation can provide that common thread regardless of the seasonwe are experiencing. Services in the style of the Taizé Community in France, through songs which, when repeated, become prayers within the heart, scripture, read by worshipers, and meditation, the quietwhich allows the person to commune with God, provide that opportunity. The Taizé Communityencompasses worshipers from the Protestant, orthodox, and Catholic traditions. First Presbyterian Church has been blessed to worship with Christians of many traditions in the Taizé services. Join fellow Christians in song, scripture, prayer, and meditation on February 25, at 6:30 PM in the Chapel.

Adult Christian Education (ACE) Programs in Von Maur Hall - Sundays, 10:00 AM

February 1: The Wired Word: Love Your EnemiesIn a speech in late 2014, Hillary Clinton spoke of a need toshow respect for our enemies and try to empathize with them. Her comments have been widely criticized from both opponentsand supporters as naïve, impractical and even dangerous. InLuke 6, Jesus says, “But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curseyou, pray for those who abuse you.” Are we still called to loveour enemies in our time? How is this possible? Come join thediscussion. Mark Jones will facilitate.

February 8: The Wired Word: U.S. to Restore Ties with CubaAfter more than 50 years of a U.S. embargo against Cuba and no official diplomatic ties, leaders of the two countries announced recently that an agreement has been reached inwhich some of the embargo will be lifted and diplomatic connections will be resorted. In this lesson, we will considerhow the wisdom of the Bible can help us when facing brokenrelationships with people who are unwilling to change theirways. Merriam Rink will facilitate.

February 15: The Wired Word – Topic TBAThis week will be our final lesson from Wired Word. Becausenew lessons are coming out each week, the topic for this lessonhas not yet been selected. Look for announcements in the bulletin.

New Testament Video Series - Sundays, 10:00 AM

February 1: Paul’s Letter to the Romansromans is unique among the Pauline letters because it is addressed to a church Paul had not founded or even visited, but it provides the most systematic exposition of Paul’s understanding of God's work of salvation through Christ.

February 8: Paul, Jesus and JamesThis lecture compares and contrasts the teachings of Jesus andPaul to see whether they are completely compatible or whetherthere are differences in some of their key ideas. There is alsodiscussion of Paul's writings as compared to those in the epistleof James with emphasis on their teaching of justification.

February 15: The Deutero-Pauline EpistlesIn this session the lecturer introduces the New Testament epistles that claim to be written by Paul, but that, in the judgmentof most modern scholars, probably were not. Discussed are thebooks of 2 Thessalonians, Colossians, and Ephesians.

February 22: In recessComparative ReligionBeginning Tuesday, February 3, 10:30 AM

This video series explores the many similarities that link all religions as well as major differences among the world's religioustraditions. The course will look at how religions develop and utilize notions of sacred time, space, objects, people and texts aswell as religious rituals, conceptualizations of divinity, the natureof the human predicament and the paths to overcoming it. Mostpoints of comparison are drawn from Christianity, Judaism, Islam,Hinduism and Buddhism. For additional information, contactConnie richardson (563-355-5593 or [email protected]).

Greetings, and Happy February, everyone! Christian Education and Fellowship for Youth has a busy monthand I hope everyone can be a part of it! We kick off the month with our Souperbowl of Caring on February 1, and there are no youthgroups or choirs than afternoon/evening due to some football game being televised. Since the Steelers are not in it, I will content myself by just watching the commercials. Please check out the schedule below to see what else is going on this month.

Sunday School: Sunday School is every Sunday in February upstairs on the third floor. All youth, preschool through high school, are invited to attend. our PreSchool through 4TH grades follow the Lectionary calendar for their weekly lesson, 5TH-6TH grades have a special “Tween” Sunday School each week; there’s ConfirmationClasses for 7TH and 8TH graders, and our high school youth will be reviewing moviesbased on Bible stories and discussing them.

ACT and EPIC Youth Groups: We will only meet twice in February—on the 8th and the 15th! February 1 is the Souperbowl of Caring, so youth willmeet after BoTH services to take donations to benefit Café on Vine, and on the 22nd we have PAS at 2:00 PM and we need to provide refreshments. We will be making valentines for seniors on February 8, and I am looking at all of us catching a movie on February 15 since most of us have that Monday offand could stay up later. DrIVErS WILL BE NEEDED.

Kirkwood Club: Kirkwood Club meets every Wednesday from 6:30-7:15 PM and is open to anyone in 1ST through 5TH grade. In February, we are going to be making valentines for a senior care home, playing grocery bag yoga, and learning about what Lent is. We are also going to watch a movie over a two week session together and we will vote as a groupon what movie to watch later in the month.

Tiffany’s Epiphany: I used to be a banker but I lost interest.

The final bills from 2014 have been paid and the lastpledges have rolled in - and we are pleased to report thatfor the third year in a row, First Presbyterian Church hasheld to its budget and ended the year on a positive financialnote. Just look at all we've been able to accomplish thispast year: a vibrant and engaging Sunday School program, the successful launch of Musikgarten, more kids in youthfellowship than we've seen in a long time, a vibrant Vacation Bible School, more visitors welcomed weekly toworship, Mana and More and so much more than just that.

Even more of you in the pews every Sunday at both nineand eleven o'clock services.

And for that, we thank you.

The remarkable thing about 2014 is that we were able to doso much (much more than we have in a long time), with less.Giving was down in 2014 compared to the year before - butwe stuck to our guns, cut expenses where we could andworked much harder to make everything work out okay.

We operated a million dollar church on less than $850,000.We did it thanks to you and thanks to our staff. And, notably, we made things work thanks to financial cuts made to both our mission and music budgets in order tokeep our budget balanced and our financial house in order.

That's the price of doing more with less.

That's also why the Session has decided to make active stewardship of the church’s resources a year-round job. Thebad news is there will be more “Minutes for Mission” on thesubject of Stewardship. The good news is that we believethis will help keep you better informed of what we're doing, how we're spending our money and allocating our resourcesso that you can play an active part in that process.

remember, we are called to be good stewards of all our resources: time, talent AND treasure. We'll have plenty ofopportunities to talk about how we should use our resourcesto further God's work in the world.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves. It's the start of the yearand we're trying to nail down First Presbyterian's annual

budget - so we need to talk about money. Specifically, weneed to talk about pledges and plans for 2015.

First the good news ... the pledge cards that have come inthis year reflect a 2-3% increase in giving over pledgesmade by the same members last year. That might not get usback to where we were in 2013, but it's an improvement.

The problem is that some expenses we can't control havegone up in the past year more than 3%. Utilities, for example, are up 15% over last year. HVAC repairs are budgeted to beup 25% over 2014 and maintenance supplies are up another$2,000 to 3,000 for the year. Add to that the fact that wewould like to restore both the mission and music budgets towhere they were in 2013 and we are about $35,000 short.

By the way, the 2015 budget does not include any additionalpersonnel costs, pay increases or new programs.

Yes, $35,000 is certainly within reach of this congregation. In fact, we still have about 30 people (individuals and families) who have yet to turn in their pledge cards for thecoming year. Another fact to note is that only about 60% ofour members actually make pledges for the coming year. That means there are about 200 individuals and familieswho do not pledge - they may give, but they don't pledge.

So, what's the deal with pledging? Here's why it's important:

As a Session, we are committed to operating the churchwithin its financial means. This means we won't spend moneywe don't have - and it means the church will endure for generations to serve its members and the community. That'sfine in principal, but it becomes difficult when we don't knowwhat we can expect in terms of income (gifts, offerings, etc.).We ask people to pledge at the end of each year so we canhave a clear idea of what we can expect in terms of revenueand then budget accordingly. This budget drives staffing andprogramming decisions made throughout the year.

If we don't have enough money pledged, we have to makecuts. The Session does not want to make any cuts in programs or ministries that are starting to gain ground and grow.

So, here's our goal:

Let's raise the remaining $35,000 we need to finish funding a budgetthat allows us to keep doing whatwe're currently doing. It's easy -and you can do it right now - bygoing online to the church's website(www.fpcdavenport.org) and signingup online; or you can fill out apledge card on Sunday morningsduring worship.

Let's also make a few Stewardshipresolutions for 2015:

1. Make sure you’ve pledged.Another $15 - $20 a month from200 individuals or familieswould more than surpass our$35,000 shortfall.

2. Get involved. one way to do more with less isto contribute your time and yourtalent to the church. Everyoneshould try to be actively involvedin at least two committees or organizations at First Pres. Youwould be amazed at what wecould accomplish if we did that.

3. Talk to members of the Session and let them knowwhat you value here at First Pres.We want to make sure we'respending our resources wiselyand getting your feedback, as to what is important and what is not important, is tremendouslyhelpful.

One Day at First Presbyterian Church ProjectThe Heritage Committee is collecting short narratives from church members singling out one day neverto be forgotten by that church member. Linda Meadors, Heritage Committee Chairperson, shares her one day memory as an example:

The one day in my First Presbyterian Church life which I will never forget was September 11, 2001. I was home alone when I learned of the tragedy in New York City, Washington, DC, and the hijacked flights. After calling my family members who all live out of town, I immediately drove to the church to seek comfort from our clergy and other members. A special worship service was organized for the evening and I felt God’s presence as we tried to understand what had occurredand what the future might bring.”

Blank forms are available in the church office and at the Welcome Desk. Submissions will be accepted through February 28.
