If you haven’t been to You’ve Been Framed at the Bridges at 57th lately, it’s time to go back, especially if you have any special

occasions coming up where you need that “just right” gift.While the store has been carrying Alex and Ani jewelry for

a couple of years, they recently enhanced their line by adding a shop-in-shop area, similar to the one they already have for Pandora.

“These products have always sold well,” says manager Danielle Dettler, “and we have seen how much our customers like our Pandora area. While at a Pandora partners meeting, we met people from Rhode Island, where Alex and Ani started, and we began the process to get approved for this store.”

Alex and Ani is named for the two oldest daughters of company CEO Carolyn Rafaelian. Their mission is to create meaningful, eco-conscious jewelry and accessories to empower the light in those who wear it.

Alex and Ani products are infused with positive energy in three important ways. First, the company says, the jewelry pieces are manufactured with “positive intention.” Second, each of the symbols featured in their designs carry a thoughtful, researched meaning. Finally, each design is intended to positively empower the person who wears it, reflecting that individual’s unique personality.

approach where they use specific designs to bring awareness to important causes, such as pediatric cancer and Toys for Tots. A portion of proceeds from the sale of those pieces goes back to the identified charity.”

The jewelry line includes their famous bangle bracelets that can be worn alone or by “stacking” multiple bracelets together, but they have also expanded to rings, necklaces, and even a men’s line that the You’ve Been Framed store is anxious to add to their collection.

Laura Benson describes herself as a “mother, wife, farm girl, horse gal, fashionista, workaholic, and lover of life.”

She probably never imagined that selling belt buckles and purses at rodeos would lead to a booming online business that sells to customers across the country. And now, Benson’s journey continues as she opens a brick and mortar store in Sioux Falls.

She has been operating Filly Flair since 2010 as an online clothing boutique out of a warehouse near Baltic. Over the last few years, Benson transitioned from a one-woman shop to a team of nearly 20, with online orders rapidly increasing each month.

When she heard about a retail opening at 69th and Western in Sioux Falls, she just felt that was what she was meant to do.

The location was formerly occupied by Candace Ann Photography, and it became available when the photographer decided to take a sabbatical to pursue other interests. The photography equipment available with the retail space will be put to good use, as Benson takes all of her own photographs for the Filly Flair website.

“I have a strong faith, and this was definitely a ‘God thing,’” she says. “It just kind of fell into my lap, and I know this is the perfect location for us.”

The name Filly Flair comes from those first sales at rodeos and, while some of the company’s apparel line can be classified as “Western,” her offerings have expanded to women’s and girls’ tops, bottoms, dresses, shoes and accessories in a variety of styles.

In fact, Filly Flair recently launched a line of athletic wear. They offer an array of capri pants and tops that can take women everywhere from the gym or a yoga class to a walk with the family. Benson knew they were a comfortable, quality option when her employees came to work at the warehouse wearing their capris.

Another unique line that Filly Flair offers is bridesmaid dresses. Benson’s goal was to offer a variety of styles at an affordable price.

“More people are having informal weddings,” says Benson, “so these easy, country, vintage styles are perfect for that. Another trend is to mix and match bridesmaid dresses to allow for more individuality. We offer styles that work for women’s body types at a price that allows them to enjoy the dress long

send out,” says Benson, “knowing it’s going to a woman who is waiting to feel happy, special and beautiful. I can’t wait to create that same experience for customers who come to our Sioux Falls store.”

She says she’ll stock the store with two of every size of what she carries online, and customers will also be able to place orders online at the store if their size isn’t there.

MARY OLINGER, had a job that filled the hearts and souls of children with serious illnesses, and granted them wishes, making

their Dreams come true. Driving home from her father’s house, she remembers seeing the car coming across the yellow line, a moment of impact that changed her life forever. Visit The Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum’s New Waterfall

This summer, the Arboretum unveiled its newest garden. The Pond Garden features two ponds connected by a waterfall, a boardwalk crossing

between the ponds, and extensive new landscape plantings. The waterfall cascades over quartzite rocks, which harken back to the turn of the century when the land where the Arboretum now sits was home to the quarry town of East Sioux Falls.

Quartzite was the foundation of the East Sioux Falls economy. Visitors can enjoy the view from a wooden bridge that spans the waterfall, then tour the Arboretum to learn more about the history of East Sioux Falls.

The Pond Garden’s construction was made possible by a generous $120,000 gift from the Museum of Visual Materials and by a $10,000 grant from the South Dakota Community Foundation.

When it comes to being lucky, I am

not. If there were 100 names in a

hat, my name would be pulled out last.

But when it comes to bad luck, I won the

jackpot. I was the 1 in 8 to be diagnosed

with breast cancer. I celebrate my breast

cancer anniversary on the day that I had

surgery, June 29, 2007. Although it has now

been over 8 years since I began treatment,

my scars and permanent side effects will

always remind me that I am a survivor.

Susan G. Komen has played a large role

in allowing me to feel proud of myself and

inspiring my passion for my breast cancer

research.

I have attended each and every Komen

SD Race for the Cure since its inception

8 years ago. My son and daughter look

forward to the Race every year and think it

is a big party to celebrate me. They are not

wrong! The Race is an event to celebrate

the lives of breast cancer survivors, honor

those who are still fighting and remember

those who have lost their lives to the

disease. Race day gives us an invitation

to stand up and fight and to make a real

difference in people’s lives.

I want to stress the money raised

really does make a difference. I know

this firsthand. 25% of the money raised

is invested in Komen’s research portfolio.

I am a scientist, and my breast cancer

research is funded by a Susan G. Komen

grant. My lab in Sioux Falls is developing

an early diagnostic test for breast cancer

recurrence, and this project was started

using Komen funding. What’s more, Komen

SD invests the remaining 75% of the money

to fund programs which provide screening

mammograms, breast health education,

mobile mammography units, transportation

to appointments and survivorship services

to thousands of women across our state,

regardless of their ability to pay.

Personally, I will attend the 8th annual

Race on September 27 because it reminds

me that I am not alone in fighting this

disease. I must confess I am not a runner,

I much prefer the 1-mile family fun walk

with my husband and kids. However, one’s

impact on the disease is not measured

by the distance they run. An individual’s

participation is the greatest impact factor

of all. I hope you join me at the Race.

As an interior designer, Tanya Schultze-Manning is used to changing things up, both in her clients’ homes and in her

own. And, for awhile, it wasn’t unusual to not spend very many years in one home before buying or building another.

However, she and her family, which includes husband, Kelly, and daughters Raena and Remi, have been in their current home

in the southeast part of the city for ten years. As far as décor and style goes, the last decade has provided an opportunity to combine a little of this and a little of that.

“Ten years is about the longest I think I’ve been in one house,” she says. “And, after that long in one place, I can say that our style is officially ‘eclectic.’”

“I’m a cow fanatic,” admits Manning. “You’ll find them everywhere.”

One colorful print hangs near the fireplace, and a bigger one that she loves – which incorporates more of the turquoise shades – hangs in the bathroom that is part of the laundry room just off the kitchen (and, as a side note, the towel holder in that

bathroom is a longhorn steer).The main living space has high ceilings and plenty of

windows that draw in natural light which adds to the warm atmosphere. The kitchen’s lighter cabinets are a contrast to the tile floor, which brings in darker shades of brown and green. The backsplash was created by individual painted tiles in a bold

backsplash,” says Manning, “ so this wouldn’t necessarily appeal to everyone. But, it’s really me.”

A butcher-block island and an angled counter provide additional work space, with seating at the counter that is perfect

for the girls at breakfast time or for people to gather around when the Mannings entertain.

The dining room features a large farmhouse table with a combination of chairs and a long wooden bench. Manning says her daughters like the burlap place mats that carry reminders of good manners like keeping your napkin in your lap.

Just off the dining room is an enclosed sun porch that opens out to the patio and backyard. This space includes seating both for dining and relaxing. A unique corner hutch made of rustic wood was a rummage sale find, explains Manning.

“I knew the people having the sale, and this big old piece was made by someone in their family. I knew I wanted it for the sun porch!”

The backyard is a perfect spot whether the family is relaxing together or having friends over to grill out. With trees and landscaping that provide privacy, a playset and trampoline for the girls, as well as a hot tub, grill and fire pit, Manning says it’s almost like they have their own personal park.

Each of the bedrooms in the house reflect the personality of its occupant.

In the master suite, the Mannings recently added floor-to-ceiling brick on the wall behind the bed and nightstands, which adds to the rustic charm of the room with its cow-print ottoman and throw pillow, hanging pendant lights in a beaded turquoise finish and a dresser painted in flowers of blue, orange and green.

“I suppose the brick may seem unusual to some,” says

Manning, “but I love it because it reminds me of a downtown loft. And when I told my husband that’s what I wanted to do, he said ‘Go for it!’”

One wall of the bedroom features a collection of crosses in varying sizes, colors and materials. It started with a small handmade cross that was a gift from one of her clients, then another that came from her mother, and the collection grew

from there. It is one of many elements in the home that speaks to the family’s strong faith foundation.

The two girls each have rooms in the lower level of their home. Remi, who is 3, is all about purple. Her room is fit for a young princess, with its twin-size four-poster bed and accents of gold throughout the room. Raena, 10, chose “junk gypsy” as the theme for her room, with pink and turquoise, feathers, fringe and dream catchers.

The girls share a bathroom with two vanities opposite each other so they have their own space. A former workout space just outside their rooms will soon be enclosed to become a shared walk-in closet. They also enjoy spending time in the colorful playroom with the beach mural and the art room with everything needed for coloring, sewing and all sorts of crafts.

Although Manning is an interior designer, she says that doesn’t mean that everything in the house comes from “designer

places.” She emphasizes that when decorating your home, it’s all about finding things that speak to you because of their color or feelings they evoke. And, sometimes it’s about adding a little “DIY” touch here and there.

“I love rummage sales,” she says. “I also find things that are used, given to me by others, on websites like Joss and Main, which I go to a lot for myself and for clients. It’s a great site for marked down, name brand items. Then, it’s just a matter of

adding your own paint or fabric to make something your own.”Three metal squares hanging in her office seem to be a

good analogy for life as a designer, or just life in general. The three show the capital letters “A” and “Z” with a “Shift” key in between.

“Sometimes you think you’re going down path A, but then you have to shift and go down path Z. That’s part of the fun of life!”

Banana Bars

1/2 cup butter, softened2 cups sugar3 eggs3 medium sized ripe bananas, mashed1 teaspoon vanilla2 cups flour1 teaspoon baking soda1/8 teaspoon salt

Cream the butter and sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, vanilla and bananas. Combine the dry ingredients and stir into the creamed mixture. Pour into a greased 10x15 inch baking pan. Bake at 350˚ for 20-25 minutes or until it passes the toothpick test. Frost with a can of cream cheese fronting. Yields 30-36 bars.

Orange Pineapple Dessert

1 yellow cake mix11 ounce can mandarin oranges, undrained4 egg whites1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce

Topping:1 small package vanilla instant pudding8 ounce carton frozen whipped topping, thawed20 ounce can crushed pineapple, undrained

Beat the cake mix, oranges, egg whites and applesauce in a large bowl on high speed for 2-3 minutes. Pour into a 9x13 inch greased baking pan. Bake at 350˚ for 25-30 minutes or until it passes the toothpick test. Cool for an hour.

Combine the pineapple and pudding mix in a bowl. Fold in the thawed whipped topping until just blended and spread over the cooled cake. Refrigerate an hour before serving. Refrigerate any leftovers. Serves 12-15.

What’s the one ingredient you reach for most often in the kitchen? For me, it’s olive oil. OK, so maybe I grab the salt

and pepper more often, but a little tin of olive oil is always close at hand. I admit I’m a bit of a freak about olive oil. It’s my go-to for sautéing and a favorite flavor enhancer. I use it in dressings, sauces and marinades, and I love to dip bread in it.

How big of an olive oil nut am I? Halfway around the world, in a little grove on the Trapanese coast of Sicily, there is an olive tree with my name on it. I adopted the tree a few years ago and every year it sends me a package with three half-liter tins of the olive oil it produces. The Cerasuola olive tree is 20 years old, it’s surrounded by about 300 other olive trees as well as other fruits trees; white & black plums, apricots, figs, pears, oranges, lemons, and grapes. A farmer named Saverio Adamo looks after my tree. Yes, I have my own olive tree. That’s how into olive oil I am.

Here are a few things you should know before you venture down the aisle at the local mega-mart to buy a bottle olive oil.

First let’s start with “extra virgin.” Extra virgin refers to the acidity level in the olive oil. Lower acidity means better oil; to be called extra virgin means an acidity of less than 0.8 grams per 100 gram. Virgin oil can have up to 2 percent.

the label. That means that during the processing in the olive press, the temperature was not raised above 80

degrees and the oil came from the first pressing. When the olives are heated, the

producers can squeeze more oil from their olives, but the quality isn’t as good. Then they

press the olive mulch a second time to get even more out. The result is poor quality oil. Stick with first cold

press and you’ll get better oil. Good olive oil isn’t cheap, so you’ll want to take care of your

investment and protect it from the three mortal enemies: light, heat and time. Good olive oils come in dark bottles, because light will cause the delicate compounds in the oil to go bad. So while you may be tempted to store your oil in a beautiful crystal cruet on the counter, it’s best to keep it in a dark bottle in the cupboard. Or look for oil that comes in tins, like Nudo (the olive tree adoption people). The tins block out all of the light and are easy to handle. Heat does the same thing as light, breaking down the compounds that make olive oil good. But unless you store your oil in the oven or you keep your house at 90 degrees, that probably won’t be an issue.

Time is the other killer of olive oil. Once it’s been pressed it starts a slow decline. Most good quality oils are best when used within a year of their pressing. So while the 3 gallon jug of extra virgin from Costco may seem like a good deal, unless you use a lot of it, stick to smaller bottles and use them up while they’re still young. It’s not like a bottle of wine that will get better with age.

Where does your olive oil come from? Good question. I prefer Italian oils, but Spain produces the most, and just about all of the countries around the Mediterranean grow olives. One thing you need to watch out for, sometimes olives may be grown in one country and pressed or packaged in another. So a bottle that says “Imported from Italy” may be grown in Spain but bottled in Italy. Does that matter? That’s up to you; I just like a little honesty in the packaging. California is also producing some pretty good oils, but the volume isn’t nearly what comes from Europe and the Middle East.

Yes, I’m an olive oil fanatic. Any day now I’ll be getting my next shipment from that little grove in Sicily, and I’ll be stocked with enough oil to last quite a while. And my little tree will keep growing, producing more oil and making me proud.

enjoy with their meals,) but a recent research paper, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry by the American Chemical Society, discovered a compound found in hops called xanthohumol is responsible for activating Nrf2.

The work was led by first author Juan Yao and colleagues. The researchers decided to study the compound xanthohumol which comes from the hops that are used to make beer. According to the authors this molecule “has received increasing attention due to its multiple pharmacological activities.” Beer is the primary way that humans become exposed to this compound.

Wait, it gets better. The study goes on to explain the results of a test done on cells grown in a dish called PC12, which act like brain cells (neurons.) Xanthohumol was found to have the ability to protect these cells against oxidative stress. Oxidative stress refers to the production of deadly free-radicals faster than the body can detoxify against them. It is a process that occurs in many disorders of the brain such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and in many other diseases, such as cancer. In cells grown in a dish, xanthohumol has been tested in several studies and it appears to prevent the formation of cancer.

Does this mean what I think it means?? Drink more beer! You could conclude that from reading this article, but then again, we already knew that based on the wisdom imparted by Cliff Clavin (of Cheers) about drinking more beer:

“Well ya see, Norm, it’s like this... A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine; which is why you always feel smarter after a few beers.”

Having a daily beer could be as healthy a choice as a glass of red wine. Everybody wins. I love when things work out. Carpe Nrf2!

If you went through the uncomfortable itchiness of chickenpox as a kid and think you’re done with it, think again: You are at

risk for developing shingles later in life. Chickenpox and shingles are caused by the same virus, known

as varicella-zoster. After having chickenpox as a child, the virus lies dormant in your body.

“Years later, the virus can wake up in the form of shingles,” said Carilyn L. Van Kalsbeek, MD, Family Physician at Avera Medical Group McGreevy 69th & Western. “It’s most common in people age 50 and older, and can show up in people with a lowered immunity.” Even though about half of cases occur among men and women age 60 and older, anyone who has recovered from chickenpox can develop shingles — even children.

Unlike chickenpox, shingles doesn’t appear as itchy red spots from head to toe. Rather, it manifests as a painful, band-shaped rash that’s often on either the left or right side of the body, back or chest. Sometimes, the shingles rash occurs around one side of the eye or face.

Shingles may start with a warning, in which an area of your skin burns, itches, tingles or feels very sensitive before the rash actually develops.

Blisters can rupture, forming open sores that could potentially become infected. Within 10 to 14 days, the rash scabs over and the person is no longer contagious.

“Is shingles contagious? Yes and no,” explained Van Kalsbeek. “It is NOT possible to ‘catch’ shingles from someone who has the rash. But it is possible to ‘catch’ the virus and then get sick with chickenpox.”

If they have never had it, chickenpox can be dangerous in infants and older adults, or any individual who has a weakened immune system.

Other common symptoms of shingles include fever, chills, headache, upset stomach and fatigue. Five to 20 percent of people develop a prolonged sense of pain — about 90 days — after the illness. Older sufferers are more likely to experience this complication.

“It’s ideal to see a physician within three days of the start of your symptoms,” Van Kalsbeek said. “Your physician may prescribe certain antiviral medications to promote recovery and minimize complications including excessive pain.”

The vaccine is recommended for all people over age 60, but can be administered to people as young as 50. Only one dose is recommended; however, protection is the greatest within five years of getting the vaccine.

In general, most insurances cover the vaccine if you’re over age 60. Check with your insurance carrier as well as your physician if you are currently between ages 50 and 60, and want to be vaccinated against shingles.

Pregnancy is one of the most amazing things you will ever experience as a woman. It is a time of incredible joy, but

during those nine months you may experience a few side effects that can make you uncomfortable. Nausea, leg cramps and cravings are all very common, but one side effect many women don’t expect is varicose veins.

During pregnancy, the valves that keep blood flowing to your heart experience pressure and may become weaker. This leads to blood pooling in your veins, which in turn, causes them to swell and enlarge. Hormonal changes due to pregnancy can also cause the flow of blood to slow, also causing your veins to swell. And when that happens, the result is varicose veins.

A common question I am often asked is, “How do I stop from getting varicose veins if I’m pregnant?” Unfortunately, your genes can play a large part in whether you get varicose veins or not. Take a look at the legs of your immediate family. If they have varicose veins, there is a good chance you will too.

While you may not be able to completely prevent varicose veins from happening, there are a few things you can do. Try to limit standing or sitting for long periods of time. When you are sitting down, don’t cross your legs. There are also compression socks you can purchase that are specially designed to squeeze the veins and prevent blood from pooling. You should also avoid wearing tight clothes around your waist and legs. These can

make varicose veins even worse. But even if you follow all the above suggestions, you might

still find yourself with varicose veins. However, some pregnant women find that after a year, their varicose veins went away on their own. But if that isn’t the case for you, the key is to get them treated. At first it might seem like a cosmetic issue, but if left alone, varicose veins can lead to more serious problems.

There are a number of treatment options available to you depending on your specific case. Many times, varicose veins can be treated with simple procedures performed right in your doctor’s office. One of these treatment options is known as sclerotherapy. This is an outpatient procedure performed right in the clinic exam room. During this procedure, your doctor will inject a solution (typically a salt solution) directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the vein, causing it to swell and the blood to clot. The vessel will turn to scar tissue and fade away with time. Between 50 and 90 percent of patients see improvement through this procedure.

Another minimally invasive procedure is called venous closure. This can also be done in a clinic or in a hospital outpatient setting if you require a higher level of sedation. This procedure uses a catheter to close off the vein through the use of heat. Blood that would normally run through the vein will instead travel through other veins.

Depending on the severity of your case, you may require surgery. Vascular surgeons can perform a minimally invasive option in a surgical setting in order for you to get the results you want. Normally the patient can leave the hospital that same day.

Years ago when I was college bound, we would pile into my blazer that seated four comfortably and head to Butte. With

bags of sunflower seeds, beef jerky and suckers, we road-tripped to an epic holiday event. With sitting room only, six of my closet comrades and I rocked out to Matchbox Twenty with the wind in our faces. This is when I fell in love with the road trip. I’m not quite sure if it was trying to navigate a map, getting lost, the simple nomadic adventure or a combination of all three. Ever since then, I’ve been sold on road trips and all the joy they bring.

Fast forward fifteen years and it’s not so simple to pack up the car and take off for the weekend. With four kids, there is serious planning that warrants careful design. From car seats, to a plethora of snacks and don’t forget the cuddle stuffies. Once the DVD choices are diplomatically voted upon and all the wires are checked at least three times, we are almost ready to hit the road. Almost.

Potty breaks, a bag of books, coloring sheets and Legos; because really what is a road trip without Legos? Now let’s not forget the water bottles, blankets and snacks. We need lots of snacks. I bet you never really realized how much your child consumes until you are locked in a car with them for nine hours.

Did I mention snacks?!? This also includes a heaping bag of beef jerky from Renner’s Corner, because it’s, well, just...yum.

Once all is packed in the car and seat belts are clicked, someone (usually me) has to use the bathroom. Finally, we pull away from the house, just about an hour off schedule, and once again I have to go make sure I remembered to leave on that light, lock that door, check the oven (even though I haven’t turned it on in two days) and of course, check the coffee pot.

Now it’s official, we are ready to road trip. Hitting that garage door opener never felt like such an accomplishment. Fifty miles out, we start the first media selection before we dine in the car for lunch. Carrot sticks, apple slices, pea puffs, and of course beef jerky — hold the sunflower seeds please.

We play games the whole way to our destination. The license plate game, where you keep tally of all the states you see. The alphabet game where you name things in order, taking turns repeating the previous letter, A, Apple, B, bug, C, cantaloupe. Then there is always the cheeky blonde one in the bunch who throws out O for Ocelot, P for Pompeii, and Q for quadruple. Oh, how I adore her. Then there is eye spy, which is always entertaining but my favorite is red car yogurt. Red car yogurt

is a game they made up over the pee-wee years of childhood where anytime they see a red car they say yogurt and the first person who says yogurt wins. This gets tricky when there is that prodigal pink car. This is usually where we pull over for a potty break and get some air.

At this point, we are half way there. We have depleted half the movie stock, the carrots are gone and the Legos are no longer interesting. Lucky for me, I am a veteran road traveler and I have a magic weapon for the flurries that result in boredom - classical music. Winning. Even the thirteen year old is out for the count. Be it thirty minutes or an hour, the quiet is welcomed as the man and I contemplate our place and our dreams. Did I mention that I love road trips?

Now we are in the home stretch. We survived seven hours in the car together and we can see the light at the end of the tunnel —a comfy bed and a pool. The last few hours go slower than expected, so rocking out to tunes on Pandora is a must, that way everyone gets a turn to listen to their favorite...even if it is the theme song to Frozen. Now the snacks are depleted and they act like they are starving.

As the day closes and turns into night, we are greeted by street lights beckoning us to rest a while and stretch our legs. That is exactly what we intended to do as three trips are made from the car after we check in to our hotel; don’t forget bunny and fuzzy or no one will get any sleep.

Jammies are on, the lights are dim and quiet snores bounce off the manicured walls. We are here, we survived, and now we get to enjoy the place we came to embrace. Road tips rock, plain and simple. Despite the planning, the time together is priceless, no matter how annoying at times.

Road trips for me have morphed over the decades as I’ve grown a family, but honestly I wouldn’t have it any other way. For me there is no better way to show my family what beauty is really awaiting to be discovered, but on the wings of freedom to the open road. May you find time to take a road trip solo or with the ones you hold close, just don’t forget the tunes and snacks — beef jerky!

Water Balloon VolleyBallMaterials: Bath towels, several water balloons, a volleyball net, and teams of two.

Instructions: Pair people up into teams of two, then group the teams into two separate teams. Each pair gets one towel, and each person holds on to one end of the towel with both hands. Place a water balloon in the center of the towel, then launch it over the net to the teams on the other side. Those teams now have to decide who will be catching the water balloon with their towel. It is a fantastic game of teaching communication and teamwork.

Cool Off!

Water Balloon PhonicsMaterials: Water balloons, permanent marker, index cards, and tape.

Instructions: Fill 15 water balloons and completely dry them off. Using a permanent marker, write the endings to some words on the water balloons, such as “at”, “an”, “in”, “ug”, and “ar”. Make 3 balloons for each world ending. Now, write the first letter of each ending on index cards, such as “F”, “H”, “C”, “J”, “P”, “M”, and “B”. Tape these cards up on a fence or the side of the shed or house outside. Give your kids the water balloons with the endings to the words, then have them choose which index card had the first letter to that word. If it is correct, let them throw the balloon at the index card and try to pop it!


Water Balloon sPoon racesMaterials: Water balloons and plastic spoons.

Instructions: Each player carefully puts a filled water balloon on a plastic spoon, then makes their way to the finish line. Whoever makes it across first with the balloon still in tact wins! This is a great way to teach children how to have patience and balance.

Water Balloon Piñata Materials: Water balloons, cotton string, outside hose, and a plastic bat.

Instructions: Select a spot to tie water balloons overhead that isn’t too high, but is high enough to reach with a bat. Fill balloons with water, then carefully tie the ends. Remember that the fuller the balloon, the quicker it will burst. Cut a piece of string long enough to keep each balloon about 2 inches apart. Tie each balloon tightly to the string, keeping the last 12 inches on either end free of any balloons. Tie the ends of the string to whatever structure you select, making sure it is very secure. Let the children line up and take turns swinging the bat at the hanging water balloons, making sure the ones who aren’t up to bat stay far enough back to be safe!

Water Balloon huntMaterials: Water balloons, buckets, permanent marker, paper, and tape.

Instructions: Fill water balloons with water and set aside. Next, use a permanent marker to label a piece of paper for each bucket and tape it in place on the outside. Decide how you want to create specific hunts for each kid involved. You can write their name, a certain shape, a number, etc. Dry off the water balloons, then write the same label on the balloons, making sure you have an equal number for each label. This will make the hunt fair for every child. Hide the balloons in shaded places where they won’t pop. Once the balloons are all found, let the kids do what they want with them. The reason for the labels is to create a game that is not going to create insecurity if one child is better at finding more balloons than others. Since they all have to find their own labeled balloons, the hunt is more like a race.

evening and was very traumatized. Her owners were on the spot to help her. It is important to understand that when they are in pain they may bite. I advise first responders to use a big blanket over their head or your shoe laces as a muzzle before handling them. They don’t mean it, but it hurts!

Then you need to get them to the closest veterinarian as quickly as possible . Gus’s veterinarian did a great job of stabilizing her and controlling her pain. Two broken bones and a broken pelvis gave evidence of the fury of the trauma she encountered. The first 24 hours is the most critical part for survival. We always worry about our patients bleeding internally in addition to the fractures.

We met Gus two days later, with the mission to “put Humpty Dumpty back together again”. Our team repairs 3-4 fractures a week, but Gus was a challenge. Our first goal was to fix the badly fractured femur and tibia. It required a lot of screws

and some strong bone plates. Then the pelvis needed to be repaired on the opposite side. She was a champ and did great through four hours of surgery.

She spent a few days with us for pain management and therapy, but then it was time to go back home to her loving owners. Just like people, it takes some time and

rest for broken bones to heal. After some time, Gus has returned to her old self!

Like many things in life, it is better to prevent injuries than have to treat them. Remember to keep your pet on a leash when you are in front of your home or walking down the street.

Sometimes the temptation is greater than their training. I also recommend not allowing your pets to ride in the back of pickups without a leash. It is very common for them to leap out while the truck is moving.

An interesting thing is that 60% of dogs hit by cars are intact males. In the quest to look for a mate, their common sense goes away. So, neutering your pet can help prevent them from meeting up with a speeding automobile.

It’s not just cars that can hurt our pals. I have repaired fractures from dogs meeting up with snowplows, tractors, silage cutters, ATV’s and even a few bicycles!

Love up your friends, play hard and don’t trust them to always make good choices.

500 A.D. Copper Knife

For several thousand years, ancient peoples quarried veins of pure copper in the Lake Superior area. First they built fires next to exposed

copper to loosen it from bedrock. Next they used hand-held mauls to dislodge chunks of copper that were then pounded and shaped into weapons, ceremonial goods, and tools.

In 1960 while digging a drainage ditch about 300 yards south of this spot, local contractor Louie Heidebrink discovered a shiny, seven-inch, crescent-shaped copper knife buried 12 feet below ground level. Tests estimated the knife’s origin to be about 500 A.D. Once used to scrape the hides of buffalo and other animals, it is one of the oldest artifacts found in Minnehaha County.

Copper goods were highly prized in the transcontinental trade network among early peoples. During its 600-mile journey here, this knife was probably traded countless times. Heidebrink discovered the copper knife hundreds of years after it was lost or mislaid by its owner, who probably lived nearby in the Mound Builders village.

Oldest Metal ArtifactShown is an artist’s conception of a woman from the nearby Mound Builder’s Village who is using the Heidebrink copper knife to scrape an animal hide. Heidebrink’s find was radiocarbon dated at the University of Wisconsin and was determined to date at about 500 A.D. This prehistoric scraping tool is the oldest metal artifact ever discovered in Minnehaha County. It is on display at the Plains Indian Room at the Center for Western Studies, Augustana College.Drawing by Carl Grupp.
