Heidi DeKramer is a self-proclaimed “people person,” having spent many years working in salons and enjoying getting to

know her clients. She decided she was ready for a change, however, and that

change came in the form of opening her own business. Heidi’s Décor and More opened in May in the Western Mall, on the east side of Scheels.

As she started dreaming about what her business would be,

she thought about the things that she really likes.“I first thought about a shoe store,” she says smiling. “I love

shoes. But, I also love clothing, and jewelry and home décor. So, I decided to do all of it!”

DeKramer attended several markets to begin finding items for her store.

“I saw so many things at market that I hadn’t really seen sold in Sioux Falls,” she said. “I knew I wanted to find unique items

and keep things changing in the store to make it interesting for our customers.”

While DeKramer has been ordering things for the store that she likes – and that she thinks customers will like – she also wants to hear from customers if they have particular interests for clothing items, accessories or styles of home furnishings.

Heidi’s Décor and More has everything from leggings and lamps to scarves and soy candles.

Her pieces for the home cover all styles, with more traditional styles in frames, vases and artwork, to pieces that are more contemporary with mixed metals and modern design elements. There is also a touch of rustic and vintage available in furniture pieces, artwork and home accessories, like a bookshelf-sized metal bike with a clock in the front wheel.

She carries wall art and wood box signs featuring both inspirational and whimsical sayings. Many of those on the humorous side are related to wine, another of the things that is on Heidi’s lists of likes. One sign proclaims “Home is Where the Wine Is.” The store also carries wine racks and other wine accessories.

On the apparel side, it’s all about the ladies with fun dresses, blouses, handbags, scarves and more. If you like hats, you’re sure to find one to fit your mood, with hats with jewels, hats with ribbons and even hats with little skulls.

Finish off your outfit with couture sunglasses, a new necklace

(many jewelry pieces are lead- and nickel-free) or even an adorable animal-shaped clutch purse.

One of the more unique accessories in the store is metal tattoos. These temporary tattoos come in a variety of metal looks, from silver to copper, and in many different shapes that you can wear on your hands, arms or even around your neck.

DeKramer wanted to create a boutique feel, but she spends a great deal of time thinking about the items she carries and the pricing to ensure she meets the needs of all her customers.

“I guess you could say I have a system,” she explains. “I really think about each item and the pricing. I want to offer quality items for our customers, but I also want them to be affordable. Most important, I want to ensure each customer has an outstanding experience.”

Whether you are looking for yourself or for your home, you can find that just right thing at Heidi’s Décor and More.

titleWe were told ‘If it’s not worth displaying, it’s probably not

worth keeping.’

When Shannon and Michael Ness bought their home nine years ago, they loved the neighborhood, which sits on

the edge of town and provides some natural space around them, and they were excited about the features of the house they had found. But, they also wanted to make it their own.

Shannon is an interior designer, and she says there is always

an idea in her head of how they can change the look of a room or add a personal touch here and there. She describes her style as rustic, but with a twist.

“I really love wood, especially antique or distressed wood,” she says, “as well as the warm colors that seem to go with that rustic look. But, we also have a little contemporary mixed in.”

The master bedroom is just off the entryway, and while some of the ideas Shannon has in her head are for this room’s eventual makeover, the master bath is one of the couple’s latest projects to be completed.

The bathroom walls have a unique, three-dimensional mosaic created from narrow, rectangular tiles with a grey distressed

wood look. The vanity has dual sinks with plenty of storage opposite a large walk-in shower.

Michael has a walk-in closet space which is actually the original closet the couple shared. An addition to this end of the house, though, enabled Shannon to create a dressing room, which she calls her “oasis.”

“Now that I have this space,” she says, “it’s hard to believe we shared that other closet for 8 years.”

A grey and cream color palette continues from the bathroom into the dressing room, with an off-white, distressed wood dressing table, grey and cream patterned carpeting, and a large “island” in the middle that has both drawers and shelves for

storage. Two walls are for hanging clothes, one wall features a cozy window seat, and the final wall has built-in shelves for shoes.

Shannon admits she doesn’t really use the window seat but, instead, she added that so their children, Taylor and Cooper, can come in to hang out with her from time to time. But, she adds,

Page 26: 2015 07 etcmagazine volume14 issue8

she is perfectly content to hang out in the space by herself.Natural light from windows and from doors leading out to

the back deck fills the family room, all the way up to its 18-foot ceiling. Somewhere down the road, says Shannon, they’ll add stone to the wall where the fireplace sits, and wood beams will cross the ceiling to bring in the rustic look she likes.

The family room leads into the kitchen, which has an oversized round table and cream-colored side chairs for more casual meals. This is one room that benefited from a home expansion, adding room for a walk-in pantry and opening up the space to fit a large square island with seating, storage and spots for a drawer microwave and small wine refrigerator.

The lighter cabinets and darker, hand-scraped floor boards bring in the wood Shannon loves, and she used a faux finish on sections of the walls to give the look of exposed brick peeking through.

For this family of four (five including their little Yorkie, Louis), it is handy to have the laundry room and “mud room” just off the kitchen near the back door. Each person has an area for hanging coats, and the room provides plenty of other storage for seasonal wear. One wall also became a little art gallery, with

empty, ornate cream frames hung over the top of Taylor’s and Cooper’s artwork.

When they want a little more formality to their meals, they can retreat to the large farmhouse style table in the dining room, dressed up a bit with the room’s full-length, geometric print drapes, antique mirror hanging over the buffet and a large hutch that Shannon says they got into the room with about an

Page 27: 2015 07 etcmagazine volume14 issue8

eighth of an inch clearance from the ceiling. The kids have rooms upstairs, and there is no doubt that

Cooper is a sports fan. He has a favorite team in every sports league, but the prominent features on the room’s walls are the iconic blue and orange horse head of the Denver Broncos and the life-size Fathead decal of Peyton Manning. Wire shelves that look like they could have come from a locker room (actually from Pottery Barn, however) hold many of his favorite things, including a budding collection of sports medals.

Across the hall is Taylor’s space, which is a colorful, all-girl space. White bookshelves sit on either side of thbed, and another set of shelves cross over the top, providing a spot to

Page 28: 2015 07 etcmagazine volume14 issue8

highlight some of Taylor’s paintings from Cookies & Canvas. When the family added on to the kitchen, they also built up, giving Taylor her own

bathroom. This allowed Cooper to claim the other bathroom upstairs, and they both appreciate having their own space.

Shannon has an office in an open area upstairs, and the home addition also enabled her to create a small deck just off the office when she needs a little outdoor retreat.

Not to be left out, Michael has his own unique space in the basement of the home.To get there, you have to go through the downstairs family room, which they call their movie-

watching spot, through the storage room and into a separate room where Michael can keep hunting gear locked away safely and yet sit back in the comfortable leather furniture and perhaps enjoy a glass of wine from the couple’s collection featured on racks built into this space.

When the weather allows, the family can enjoy the multi-level deck with its fire pit and grill, and the kids can let their imaginations run wild down in the yard.

“We spend a lot of time out there,” says Shannon.Although Shannon may change up some of the interior décor

according to the seasons, like the bright white accents in vases and flowers in the house for the summer, family photos are always prominently displayed, from outdoor photos of the kids in rustic wood frames hanging on the wall along the staircase to photos of the family on their farmland in central South Dakota.

The Ness family has made this house their home, and they have created a wonderful space for making family memories.

I will never forget the first time I tried rare tuna. It was more than 20 years ago and I was in Portland at a professional

convention. Six other conference attendees and I had a reservation at a local seafood restaurant. We had all piled into a cab that should have seated four and we were off to dinner. As we arrived at our destination, the woman who was crammed into the driver’s side of the back seat opened the door, only to have it ripped from its hinges by a passing car. I quickly handed the driver twenty bucks for an eight dollar fare and the group disappeared into the restaurant as the cabbie shoved his door into the back seat.

That made the night memorable to begin with; then I ordered my entrée. I asked for the tuna steak and the server told me the chef recommended that it be served rare. I’d never had fresh tuna, so I said I’d go with his recommendation. I fell in love. It was sweet and

fresh and clean tasting. It was unlike any fish I’d ever had before. It was more like a rare beef filet than seafood. With a few bites, my life was changed. For years, if I saw fresh tuna on a menu, I would order it as a default. And it all started with that one fateful night in Portland.

My parents had raised me to be an adventurous eater. When other kids turned their noses up at things like spinach or fish, I asked for seconds. So given the chance to try new things as I’ve grown older, I usually say yes. Through the years, I’ve discovered a few new things that have become old favorites. Those things often stay at the top until a new taste comes along. What I call a favorite today might be ho hum by this time next year; all at the whims of my ever changing moods.

A few years ago, I had a chance to treat a couple of co-workers to a really nice dinner in Chicago. I took them to Chef Graham Elliot’s namesake restaurant long before he was a celebrity chef. We ordered the 12-course tasting menu, which is really more like 16 courses. One of those tastes involved sweetbreads. I knew them to be the thalamus gland of young beef cattle, but I’d never had them before. They had been fried crisp with a light sweet and tart sauce. As one of my guests took a bite, the other talked about how she had grown up on a ranch eating all the parts of the cow, including the glands. This drew an inquiry about what the sweetbreads were. The first woman almost lost her dinner when she discovered she had eaten a gland. I thanked my parents for raising me to eat

what was presented, and not to be concerned about where on the animal it had come from. Near the end of the meal, I asked for the off-menu but signature dish of foie gras lollipops. Yes, lollypops made of goose liver foie gras and coated in Pop Rocks candy. They rocked, but the less adventurous eater among us passed. I’m so glad I didn’t.

As I write this article, I’m sitting on the patio, the stereo playing on the outdoor speakers and four racks of ribs smoking away on the Big Green Egg. Pork ribs were a dish that had fallen victim to my mood and tastes. I’d liked them as a kid when my grandfather made them. But then I had too many tough, nearly meatless bones, often bathed in too much barbeque sauce. So I gave up on ribs. The good ones I’d eaten in Memphis and Kansas City had been pushed aside by countless bad versions. That changed a few years back when Look’s Market put on a class and taught me to make them myself. I still don’t order them at restaurants very often, but love to cook them at home.

What’s the next taste that will catch my attention? Who knows? It could be anything; fish, fowl or fruit, animal, vegetable or mineral. But I’ll keep trying new things, exploring new flavors and cuisines.

Do yourself a favor, eat something good today.

For his day job, Jim’s runs a little ad agency on the prairie called ADwërks in the fashionable uptown neighborhood of downtown Sioux Falls.

S’more Wine

NEW HOME?Meet RyanRyan Dean

Mortgage Banking Manager

Make an appointment with Ryan today. Call (605) 782-5714.

After a couple of glasses of good wine, a friend of my mine smiled and said, “s’more wine please.” My first thought

was, “Man, this guy is lightweight.” My second thought was, “Did he say s’more wine??” Then, of course, the cogs in my wine brain began turning rapidly until a thought appeared — What wine would I have with s’mores? This is the time of year when I look around my neighborhood and see fire pits igniting at dusk. My neighbor Jim polishes his custom-built (out of an old golf club) marshmallow skewer and invites the family over for s’mores on an open fire. Maybe next time I’ll bring over a bottle of Viognier.

Viognier (pronounced VEE-OH-NYAY) is a white wine grape variety. It is the only permitted grape for the French wine Condrieu in the Rhône Valley. Outside of the Rhône, Viognier can be found in regions of North and South America as well as Australia and New Zealand.

Viognier has the potential to produce full-bodied wines with a lush, soft character. The Viognier varietal has natural aromatics that include notes of peach, pears, violets, and minerality. However, these aromatic notes can be easily destroyed by too much exposure to oxygen which makes barrel fermentation a winemaking technique that requires a high level of skill on the

Page 38: 2015 07 etcmagazine volume14 issue8

part of any winemaker working with this variety.K Vintners, by Charles Smith, makes a wonderful Viognier

sources from the Yakima Valley in Washington State. Couple the charismatic wine lables with good juice, and you have a winning combination.

Because I’m a visual person, I tend to gravitate towards wines with labels that are appealing and thoughtful. Check out Charles Smith’s wines like Boom Boom Syrah or Kung Fu Girl Riesling and you will quickly see how simple becomes complex

and thought-provoking in a whole new way. His K Vintners brand is much tamer than his flagship wines, but it is clear that this Viognier fits the minimalistic branding.

I love the description of K Vintners Viognier on their website, “Delicious, single-vineyard Viognier - layers of Meyer lemon curd, Asian pear, clove, honeydew melon, and bee’s wax. Balanced in the mouth with a minerally finish that’s so long you’ll need binoculars...” Brilliant and masterful, just like the wine found in this bottle. The 2012 vintage received 90 points from Wine Spectator, and that’s no surprise. All of their wines are 90+ points, including K Vintners’ vast array of Syrah wines.

Summertime is the perfect time for fire pits and s’mores, and a perfectly chilled bottle of Viognier is the perfect pairing. Carpe Vino!

All women are unique and different. So not surprisingly, not all breasts are made the same. A woman’s breast tissue can vary

from more fatty to extremely dense. There is nothing abnormal about having either of these. In fact, your breast density can actually change over time. This can be caused by a number of factors including age, hormonal status, weight loss or gain, pregnancy and lactation, as well as the radiologist’s interpretation of the exam, particularly when you are at the threshold between two densities. And while your tissue density may change, it is important to be aware of what category you are in.

In the U.S., about 50 percent of all women are classified as

having dense breast tissue. At Sanford, patients are notified if their mammogram shows that their breast tissue is dense (heterogeneously or extremely dense). Dense tissue is very common and is not abnormal.

If you have dense breast tissue it doesn’t mean that you will get cancer. The density of the breast tissue can make it difficult to detect abnormalities in the breast. Due to its structure, dense tissue may look like an abnormality or mask an actual finding on a mammogram. Breast density is an independent factor and has a small impact on your risk. The strongest risk factors for breast cancer, other than age and sex, are personal or family

history (especially a first degree relative with premenopausal breast or ovarian cancer), and personal history of an abnormal breast biopsy.

To ensure early detection, physicians recommend women schedule an annual screening mammogram. At Edith Sanford Breast Center, we offer 3D mammogram technology. A 3D mammogram can pinpoint the size, shape and location of an abnormality, better than ever before by looking through the dense tissue with 1 millimeter thick slices.

Thomas Cink, MD, is one of three fellowship-trained breast radiologists at Edith Sanford Breast Center. He recently co-authored a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. This was the largest study to date that examined the benefits of 3D mammography. Regardless of breast density, it found that 3D screenings led to a 41 percent increase in invasive cancers detected, a 15 percent decrease in false alarms, and a 29 percent increase in the detection of all breast cancers.

This breakthrough technology in the hands of the region’s only fellowship-trained breast radiologists helps detect cancer in women with dense breast tissue at the earliest and most curable stages.

Call 855-35EDITH to schedule your mammogram today and visit edithsanford.org to learn more about dense breast tissue.

Get Screened

Every woman (regardless of their density) should get

screened every year beginning at age 40, and a mammogram is the only screening tool that

has been demonstrated to lower breast cancer mortality.

While mammography sensitivity is somewhat lower

in women with extremely dense breasts, it is still the best option for screening.

Located just off the southern coast of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard welcomes visitors throughout the year. An ideal

New England summer escape, the island of Martha’s Vineyard has a host of outdoor activities, world class beaches, charming seaside inns, and other attractions. To get to the island, you can catch a ferry from Massachusetts, New York, or Rhode Island.

At 100 square miles, Martha’s Vineyard is split between down-island and up-island towns. Located down-island are the town of Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven, and Edgartown. Located up-island are the towns of Chilmark, Aquinnah, and West Tisbury. The Vineyard’s first town and the largest, Edgartown is where you will

find several beautiful historic homes lining the streets. The iconic 1881 Edgartown Lighthouse is 45 feet tall and offers gorgeous views of the harbor and of the island of Chappaquiddick, which is 300 yards off of the Vineyard’s eastern coast. Chappaquiddick is accessible by ferry, and is a fantastic option for lounging on the beach, as it includes miles of empty sand in the sun. Also in Edgartown is the beautiful South Beach in Katama. Oak Bluffs is known for its delicious fudge shops and lovely Victorian cottages, and is the island’s tourist hub. It is very laid back and family-friendly, with lots of activities for the kids including the historic Flying Horses Carousel, which is the nation’s oldest operating

platform carousel and a National Historic Landmark. Oak Bluffs is also home to the iconic “Gingerbread Cottages”, which is a cluster of fairytale-like wooden houses which are painted with bright colors and decorated with wooden garnishes that resemble icing. You will also find Island Alpaca here, where guests can feed the animals and take them for walks around the 19-acre farm. West Tisbury has acres of rolling farmland, where you can find Long Point Wildlife Refuge, making up 600 acres of hiking trails and coastline. Find fresh fruits and vegetables at West Tilbury Farmers Market, and relax and unwind at Martha’s Vineyard Hot Yoga. The town of Aquinnah encompasses the National Landmarks of Gay

Head clay cliffs and the historic red-brick Gay Head Lighthouse. It is also home to the Wampanoag Native American Tribe. Chilmark is where the Islanders go to get away from the summer crowds; where they can enjoy the peaceful fishing village of Menemsha along the coastline. You will find some of the best fishing and freshest seafood here. Chilmark is the birthplace of American Sign Language, and was known for years as the “Town that Spoke By Hand”. Vineyard Haven is where you will find Cedar Tree Neck Sanctuary, where you will find peace and quiet combined with ocean and trees and nature.

For those that need a place to stay, there are several intriguing

options. There are no chain hotels, only authentic island experiences. There are a variety of hotels to choose from, as well as bed & breakfasts, inns, hostels, and campgrounds. Rental properties range from house rentals to quaint studios and cottages. The seven-acre hilltop retreat, Beach Plum Inn, overlooks Menemsha Harbor and includes a restaurant with panoramic views of the water. Dockside Inn has wraparound porches and a 1956 Rolls-Royce available for a drive around the island. Charlotte Inn is a merchant’s house from 1864, with 19 intimate rooms decorated with vintage flair.

When it comes to food, Martha’s Vineyard has plenty of yummy options. With its farming and fishing heritage, there is no shortage of seafood and farm-fresh ingredients. Hooked offers an oyster happy hour, as well as classic seafood and some unique menu choices. Faith’s Seafood Shack is located on the cliffside near the Gay Head Lighthouse, and offers sashimi and lobster rolls with an amazing ocean view. Black Dog Tavern is a famous waterfront restaurant right next to the main ferry, and offers dishes such as quahog chowder and crab cake sandwiches. Try some house-made garlic dill pickles and garden-fresh options at State Road, and enjoy a glass of wine with some fancy dessert at Sweet Life Cafe.

Shopping in Martha’s Vineyard will definitely be a unique experience, with several boutiques offering one-of-a-kind items for sale. With no chain stores or malls, there is a more distinct environment for every style. There are more than 50 art galleries, with work by local and national artists represented. At Martha’s Vineyard Glassworks, you will find colorful tableware and vases created by local artisans. Bespoke Abode offers hand-selected pieces by interior designer Liz Stiving-Nichols, including her Townie Pillows, which are stamped with Vineyard town names and zip codes. Antique stores are plentiful on the Vineyard. Browse through a plethora of eclectic finds at Midnight Farm, which displays colorful quilts, homemade salsa, and more. There are also plenty of markets for fresh produce. Larsen’s Fish Market is the place to go for fresh seafood to prepare yourself and bring along for a sunset picnic.

One of the best ways to enjoy the Vineyard is cycling. There are miles of off-road trails throughout the island available for every skill level. With 44 miles of down-Island bike trails, there are many glorious sights to enjoy on a bicycle, and most of this route is flat and easier for children and less-experienced riders. A more challenging ride would be a tour of the up-island communities of West Tilbury, Chilmark, and Aquinnah, with hilly terrain and curvy roadway. Renting a bike is easy and available at several rental shops on the island.

There is something magical about this place that keeps visitors coming back for more. Whether you decide to visit in the spring, summer, fall, or winter, the beauty of Martha’s Vineyard will leave an imprint on your heart.

for Baby? What to Consider When Your Pregnancy Might Be High Risk

Planning for a pregnancy oftentimes is fairly typical — start taking folic acid, stop drinking alcohol, make sure your

finances are in order. For women who have a chronic health condition such as

diabetes, high blood pressure or a heart condition, getting pregnant takes a little more planning due to a fear of risking the health of both mother and baby. For these women, preconception counseling can provide the necessary details of what to do before, during and after pregnancy to promote healthy results.

Preconception counseling is a different approach to what people know and understand about Maternal-Fetal Medicine. Typically, these specialists are called after an unexpected complication arises during pregnancy. Preconception counseling provides an opportunity for a woman to meet with a maternal-fetal medicine specialist before conception to discuss potential complications and risks and create a plan to help manage risks

later in the pregnancy. “The majority of maternal-fetal medicine care is this crisis

management approach. Preconception counseling is like risk management,” said Jason Picconi, MD, PhD, of Avera Medical Group Maternal Fetal Medicine, who specializes in maternal-fetal medicine and medical genetics. “We identify the risks and then try to mitigate those risks as much as possible.

“For a lot of patients with chronic health issues, you can see possible complications coming a thousand miles away. When they have those conditions, preconception counseling gives us time to sit down and talk about what they can do to optimize their health to minimize the risk of complications.”

condition can have on her pregnancy and the unborn baby as well as how pregnancy can affect her condition.

For a woman with diabetes, preconception planning could be as simple as getting blood sugar readings under control for several months prior to pregnancy. Something else to include in preconception counseling is a discussion of medications the mother-to-be is taking. Some medications are associated with an increased risk of birth defects, and some changes may be recommended, Picconi explained.

Picconi said his job isn’t to tell a woman whether she should or shouldn’t have children. Rather, he talks with couples about the

risk for complications so they can make an informed decision. “I will tell them these are the risks, this is how you lower the

risk, these are things you can adjust, these are things you can’t. Ultimately, it’s the parents’ decision, but it’s always helpful for them to understand the risks,” he said. “If a woman does decide pregnancy is the right option, maternal-fetal medicine specialists can work together with her obstetrics provider when needed to help her experience a safe and healthy pregnancy. Our goal is the same as the mother’s – a healthy mother and healthy baby.”

Nothing beats the heat and possibly the humidity better than getting out and enjoying nature the way it’s intended;

organically that is. To the bees busily buzzing to the bunnies hopping and the sweet serenade of humming birds humming; it is best time to get outside. The beauty of the great outdoors is waiting to be explored. There is so much waiting to be discovered, even in your very own backyard.

This summer we’ve decided to be as unplugged as possible, so we can take it all in. We’ve dug up books about botany and gardening and planted a really fantastic organic garden with the help of friends and farmers at the Co-op. We have joined a Farm CSA and are eagerly awaiting our weekly shares. We

even got involved in a fun “kids only” cabbage growing contest. My youngest daughter has been actively checking on her baby plant three times daily and has lovingly named it “Honey”. She most certainly is planning on winning.

We ordered one of those caterpillar mesh habitats and watched all ten fuzzy guys transform into beautiful painted ladies. It was a really amazing experience for all of us and it totally tied in with the bee and butterfly garden we designed and planted this year. We had the perfect place to let them go and pollinate, but just before they said farewell they gave each one of us a little butterfly kiss. Sometimes we see them fly over head, as if to say hello!

Early afternoons are often spent seeking refuge from the sun. Be it with a delightful popsicle or a quick leap through the sprinklers, outside is the place to be. We also love to put up the little pop up tent and read books, play games, and rest in the shade. These little shelters are great and can quickly be turned into playhouses, puppet theaters, and a center stage. Any way you have it, tents are loads of fun.

Better yet is heading over to the Outdoor Campus for free fun classes and events all summer long. From paddling, archery and orienteering, you are sure to have a fantastic time. My littles love the fishing programs they offer; wiggling worms included. They could spend hours sitting on the banks waiting for that

anticipated “bite”. Fishing is one of the most organic and innate summer actives that will surely leave everyone with a smile.

However, my favorite thing to do is to get outside when it is still and cool, and breathe and stretch with my kids. It’s such a great way to center as the long summer days sometimes run together. Everything seems to be busier in the summer and it is nice to come together and do yoga in the garden. It’s such a natural way for us to start our day and I love it!

Slowing down just enough, as summer sneaks up on us to really enjoy all that nature has to offer. It is so ingrained in us to get outside and play, we should plan on enjoying it everyday. Cheers!

summer Crafts

Rainbow bubble SnakeSMaterials: Empty water bottle, scissors, duct tape, a sock, dish soap, a shallow container, and some food coloring.

Instructions: Cut the bottom of the water bottle off, then slide the sock over the bottom of the bottle. Secure the sock with duct tape (colorful duct tape makes this a cuter craft). You can also use a rubber band to secure it. Pour some dish soap into a shallow container, then add a little bit of water and mix. Gently dip the sock end into the dish soap solution, then carefully blow into the open end of the water bottle. In order to make the bubbles colorful, just add a few different colored drops of food coloring onto the sock covered end. Make sure to remind your kids to blow air out, not suck air in, and this will avoid any bubble eating.

Pool noodle Race TRackMaterials: Extra large foam pool noodle, serrated knife, toothpicks, bamboo skewers, needle nose pliers, glue, scissors, card stock in various colors, and toy cars.

Instructions: Using a serrated knife, cut the pool noodle in half, then lay the halves on the ground, side by side, with the insides facing up. Where the two halves of the noodle touch each other, insert as many toothpicks as you need to hold the noodle tracks tightly together. Use the needle nose pliers to clip the ends of the toothpicks so that the ends are not sticking out from the noodle. To decorate your race track, cut little flags out of card stock paper and adhere to toothpicks, then stick them out of the edges along the tracks. Using more card stock, create a start and a finish sign. Attach bamboo skewers to each end of the signs and place at the ends of the track. Now all you need to do is prop the tracks up on something, remembering that the higher the track, the faster the cars will go!

Juice box boaTSMaterials: Empty juice box, scissors, card stock paper, colored tape, bamboo skewer.

Instructions: Cover an empty juice box’s straw hole with tape. Using scissors, cut a 4 inch high by 3 inch wide triangular sail from card stock paper, then designate a number for your boat by writing it in the middle of the sail. Decorate the edges of the sale with colored tape. Push a small bamboo skewer through both sides of the box so that it sticks out underneath about an inch. Tape your sale to the skewer. To finish up the sail boat, make a little flag out of the colored tape and add it to the top of the skewer. Float your boats in a plastic tub full of water or set them to sail down a river. Create a game out of it by seeing who can sink their boat first or racing them against each other.

Recycled can biRd FeedeRMaterials: Soup can, paint, paint brushes, string, ribbon, or twine, and bird seed.

Instructions: Thoroughly wash an empty soup can, making sure to peel the label off and remove as much sticky residue as possible. Dry the can off as best you can, then let your kids paint it however they want to. Let the first coat dry before adding any decorations on top, such as polka dots or zig zag patterns. You can decide how you want to hang the can, whether it be with string, ribbon, or twine tied around the can, or poking a hole in the bottom and tying the string, ribbon, or twine through it to make it more stable. The can should lie on it’s side, with the opening facing horizontally. Making sure not to fill the can too full, fill it with bird seed, then go outside and hang the bird feeder from a tree branch. Your kids will love watching the birds eat out of their colorful design.

Cats are amazing creatures, that sometimes defy gravity and the ills of aging. Once your favorite feline passes the age of

10, it appears that many of them are capable of living forever. Most age gracefully and seem to be able to survive well past

what many of us expect. As your cat ages, it is important to keep a close eye on them.

Felines are the masters of masking any signs of illness until they are very sick. To survive in the wild, it is in their best interest to not look weak or unable to defend themselves. This makes it difficult for us to catch the signs of disease or aging until they are very ill.

Feline lovers know that their elderly cats are very precious. They do not ask a lot of us except a clean box, food on demand and a fresh bowl of water. It just seems that the older they get, the less work it becomes. It is almost like they are on autopilot.

There are a few subtle signs that may indicate that your aging feline is having problems.

Kidney failure is the most common ailment we see with cats as they get older. In many cases, there are no signs until they become very ill. If you watch closely, they drink more water and may urinate larger volumes in the early stages of kidney disease.

The appetite is the next indicator of kidney failure. Many older cats start having a smaller appetite. As the failure becomes more advanced, your friend will start eating every other day. It is hard to see your friend not eat well, frequently they will come up to the bowl to eat and suddenly walk away.

Weight loss is another sign that something is not right with your older cat. A slow weight loss can be very normal, but if

your pet is losing weight rapidly, it is a problem. If your cat has a great appetite, but losing weight we need to look at their thyroid gland.

Thyroid cancer is the second most common problem for elderly cats. Thyroid cancer is very common in pets. The tumor secretes too much thyroid hormone. The thyroid secretions makes their heart beat faster, their intestines to move faster and increases their metabolism so high that they cannot keep up.

The signs of thyroid problems can be singular or a combination of a lot of symptoms. Weight loss despite a good appetite is the most common sign. Often cats will vomit and or have a loose stool from the intestines being overstimulated. Many will lose 20-30 percent of their body weight before we diagnose it.

Diabetes normally occurs in younger cats, but we do see it in our older pets. It usually starts with a very large thirst, large urine spots in the litter box and weight loss in the beginning. Often they are so good at masking these symptoms, especially in a multi-cat household, that we miss it until they start vomiting.

These senior citizens benefit from us keeping a close eye on them and running a few simple blood tests every year. The exam and a quick blood draw can give us a lot of insights into what is going on, before they actually show us signs that they are ill. There are so many medications and foods we can use to keep them happy, vibrant and alive if we diagnose their problems early.

Linear Mound

78 friends & family | Historical markEr

When T. H. Lewis surveyed burial mounds in this area in 1884, he sketched an unusual and puzzling linear mound at this spot. Lying

from the southeast to the northwest, it measured 60 by 30 feet and was one foot high. Built between AD 300 and 1000 by ancients of the Late Woodland period who left no clues as to its purpose, the mound was plowed over and leveled by early settlers before it could be examined by archeologists.

Pprobable uses of the linear mound include the following: for religious, social, ceremonial, or funerary functions, for astronomical purposes possibly pointing to a constellation meaningful to the people of the nearby Woodland village; for marking a clan or village boundary; or for a base for scaffolds built to hold human remains before interment in burial mounds close by. Without any evidence, the exact uses of the linear mound may never be known.

By using Lewis’ 1884 field survey map, in 2002 archeologists from the Augustana College Archeology Lab mapped the original site of the linear mound in 2002.

1884 MapWhen T. H. Lewis sketched this map of present-day upper Sherman Park, he included the Linear Mound, which he numbered “7.” It was located to the east of the five round burial mounds.

Scaffold BurialThis drawing depicts human remains placed on a scaffold which had been built on a linear mound. Months later the remains would be interred in a nearby burial mound. Drawing by Carl Grupp.
