When officers arrived, they found the teen shot outside of a party near the address. The

17-year-old was suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound and was rushed to Boston Medical Center.

Solar-powered benches take root in Hub parks

A new type of bench is taking root in Boston parks, giving people the chance to recharge their legs and their phones.

Soofa, as the bench is called, is a solar-powered outdoor charging station from the MIT Media Lab spin-off fi rm Changing Environments.

The benches are being installed in various parks and green spaces in Boston over the next week, including Titus Sparrow Park in the South End, the Boston Common and the Rose Kennedy Greenway, the city recently announced. METRO

Supreme Court strikes down buff er-zone law

The Supreme Court on Thursday unanimously voided the state’s 7-year-old law that created a 35-foot buff er zone outside abor-tion clinics on the grounds that it violated protestors’ right to free speech.

Buff er zone opponents argued that the space prohibited pro-life demon-strators from speaking to women about abortion al-ternatives, while clinicians said the zone was meant to protect against harassment and violence.

“A woman seeking reproductive health care should not be harassed, judged or shamed,” Boston Mayor Martin Walsh said of the ruling.

“I will do everything in my power to ensure the safety of the women seek-ing care and the staff that work at these facilities.” METRO

Seven years after his public art triggered a citywide bomb scare, Boston artist Peter Berdovsky, known professionally as Zebbler, has moved past the promotional stunt gone-wrong and is optimistic about the city’s awakening art scene.

Do you consider what Kayvon Edson did on the Boston Marathon bombing anniversary to be performance art?I consider what [Edson] did incredibly disrespectful to the spirit of mourning and sense of profound community and loss that the city of Boston was experiencing on the day of the anniversary. His actions to me are repulsive and similar to that of Westboro Baptist Church members holding up signs about [expletive] going to hell at soldiers’ funerals.

Do you think you’ll always be known as the Mooninite artist?I don’t really think so. I am a fairly ambitious individual, and I’m certainly hoping to get more famous for my art and performances. It’s getting close; after six years of touring the U.S.,

more and more people know me as “Zebbler: that guy that does incredible visual performances and installations.”

Were you caught off guard by the public’s reaction at the time?I was totally caught off guard. I was doing a job for the Cartoon Network. I figured a big company like that would know what they were doing. They totally did, too, just not in the way I expected. They bailed themselves out with a $2 million donation to the city in exchange for all charges being dropped and left me and my friend Sean Stevens to be dragged through the court system as scapegoats. It was a great lesson in politics though. I truly believe that.

How was your First Night 2014 installation received? Really well; people had big smiles on their faces watching the library transformed to tell the visual history of this city. It meant a lot to me to do this. I felt like I could finally give something back to the people who raised me and welcomed me.

Can artists truly feel comfortable pushing the envelope in Boston?I think we’re one of the better cities for that. Freedom of expression is respected here. And public art is starting to catch on. It’s still hard for visual artists. ...But we are waking up. Visit Metro.us

for the extended interview with Peter Berdovsky.

Casino issue. Gaming panel to weigh Walsh’s delay request this week The state’s gaming com-mission will this week hear arguments concerning Mayor Marty Walsh’s attempt to delay the awarding of a resort casino license to one of two projects bordering Boston.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission is scheduled to meet Wednesday in Charles-town to take up the matter and has invited representatives form Boston, Everett, Revere, Mohegan Sun and Wynn Re-sorts to speak on the issue.

Walsh’s law office submit-ted a letter to the commission last week, just days after the state’s highest court ruled that voters could decide a Novem-ber ballot question that seeks to overturn the 2011 expanded gaming law.

“To prevent the needless expenditure of additional time, money and effort by the city of Boston, at a time when the future of casino gambling in Massachusetts is uncertain, the city respectfully requests that the gaming commission stay all proceedings before it concerning the issuance of a … license,” said Eugene O’Flaherty, the city’s attorney, in the letter.

Mohegan Sun is proposing

a resort casino in Revere at Suffolk Downs and Wynn is pitching one for Everett.

Revere Mayor Dan Rizzo said he respects Walsh but sees no reason for a delay.

“A time line has been announced, and they should stick with it. It’s also worth noting that two other licenses have been granted with full knowledge that there could be a ballot question — this is no different,” Rizzo said in a statement. “Mohegan Sun has reached 11 other surround-ing community agreements. I can see no reason for further delays.” MICHAEL NAUGHTON

last month against Boston’s ar-

Marathon bombing

Jury selection begins in trial of Tsarnaev friend

Jury selection will begin today for a friend of suspected Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, Azamat Tazhayakov, who is accused of impeding the investigation into the deadly bombing.

A pool of hundreds of

potential jurors will be screened about their attitudes about Tsarnaev, Muslims and the attack itself in order to give Tazhayakov a fair trial.

A proposed juror questionnaire asks, “Were you, a family member or a close friend impacted in ANY way (physically, emotionally or mentally) by the Boston Marathon bombing?”

Jurors are also asked

if they or anyone close to them has ever expressed an opinion about the guilt or innocence of Tsarnaev and his friends.

Opening statements in Tazhayakov’s trial are expected to begin on July 7. Three others have also been charged with impeding the investigation and are scheduled for trial at later dates. MORGAN ROUSSEAU Tazhayakov / SKETCH BY JANE COLLINS

President Barack Obama will ask Congress for more than $2 billion to deal with the surge in unaccompanied children from Central America flooding into the United States along its southern border.

Obama will make the re-quest for emergency funding in a letter on Monday, asking Congress to act when it returns from a holiday recess on July 7, a White House official said on Sunday.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will travel to Central America this week for a visit that will include the inaugura-tion of Panama’s new president on July 1 and that is expected to include meetings on the crisis with Central American leaders.

In addition, Obama will seek greater authority for U.S. immi-gration officials to speed up the deportation of children caught crossing from countries such as Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, the official said.

The official said Obama will also request a “sustained border security surge through enhanced domestic enforce-ment,” along with an increase in immigration judges to more

speedily adjudicate the cases of recent border crossers.

Obama will step up efforts with Central American coun-tries to repatriate migrants who are returned to their home countries and address the root causes of migration. And, the official said, he will seek “the resources necessary to appro-priately detain, process and care for children and adults.” REUTERS

Dean Norris returns as the fearsome Big Jim for another season of “Under the Dome.” / BROWNIE HARRIS, CBS

Dean Norris picked one heck of a series to follow up “Break-ing Bad.” In “Under the Dome,” Norris takes on the dastardly role of local politico Big Jim in the series based on the novel by Stephen King. The choice certainly seems to be work-ing out for him: The series, a smash hit last summer, returns for another season chronicling a mysteriously cut-off town. Here, Norris lets us in on what to expect this year.

On where we fi nd Big Jim at the start of the season: “Big Jim thinks he knows what’s best for the town, and he thinks he’s inspired by the dome to do what he does. ... What happens in the first episode is that he comes to an awakening. He reevaluates his position and his kind of personal trajectory and decides that maybe a different kind of Big Jim is required to survive under the dome. Whether that turns out to be true is what

we’ll find out as the season goes on. One of the things that Big Jim is trying to deal with is seeing if there is enough food for everybody, if there is enough water for everybody and what resources are left for us to survive under the dome.”

On whether Big Jim might actually be lightening up a little bit this season: “Actually, I think so. One thing we’re talk-ing about this year is including some redemption for Big Jim. It’s actually in the first episode that he has a ‘come to God’ moment where he believes that maybe his purpose in life shouldn’t be to be so nasty. And that’s a story arc that continues throughout the season: wheth-er he has a higher purpose — a greater purpose — other than just killing people and being mean to his son.”

A nicer Big Jim Interview. Dean Norris’ “Under the Dome” character is lightening up.

So King-ian

On Stephen King writing the fi rst new episode:

“The fi rst episode is so Stephen King-ian, and part of it is that almost in the midst of the kind of most horrifying and tragic elements, there are these little

lines that are humorous. It was cool to see that because it’s in his books [so] it was so cool to see it in the script, too. I think you’ll see in that fi rst episode that there are moments where Big Jim maybe sees ghosts or they may be whatever they are. ... It’s funny to see Big Jim have to squirm.”

On the rules of life

under the dome

“I think we are all struggling to fi nd out what [the dome] means — what its powers are, whether it’s good or bad, whose side it’s on. Those are questions we attempt to answer and struggle with throughout the season: What is it about, what could it do?”

What is it like making a movie about musicians with actors who aren’t primarily musicians? It’s nice to mix it up a little bit. Sometimes it’s nice to have an actor who’s singing or a singer who’s acting and not have everybody doing what they’re comfortable doing. Keira was outside her comfort zone having to perform a song or play the guitar. While Adam

[Levine], who is completely comfortable with that side of things — you couldn’t stop him from singing or playing — was more nervous around the act-ing side of things. MATT PRIGGE

Keira Knightley (left) plays a musician and Mark Ruff alo (right) plays an A&R guy in “Begin Again.” / THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY

Seven years ago, Irish musician-turned-filmmaker John Carney watched his little film — “Once,” starring Glen Hansard as a street musician — blossom into a phenomenon. He has re-turned to the genre and to New York City with “Begin Again,” which concerns an A&R guy (Mark Ruffalo) who is working on a new kind of record with a shy musician (Keira Knightley).

Why did you want to return to the genre? The story is what appealed to me. I don’t really sit down thinking something should be a musical.

Like ‘Once,’ this isn’t a traditional musical. It’s realistic, and the songs rise organically from the narrative. They’re stealth musicals, aren’t they? They not like Broadway musicals where the dialogue is there to join the dots between songs. It’s the other way around.

One thing it brings up is, how do musicians these days actually make a living? That’s a huge question and one that in this film is just asked, as opposed to answered. I would not make any great claims to answering that question. It’s quite a sensitive issue for a lot of artists I know. A lot of people in this field feel they’re being taken advantage of, or it’s assumed their work should be done for free. If a plumber comes to your house to fix your toilet, you have to pay him.

You also focus on an A&R guy, who is not treated like a greed monster.I felt like exploring what it’s like for someone for whom this business was their reason to live. The discovery of new music is like the discovery of new lands. When you see an A&R man dragging around their band, you can see some-one who looks like they’ve discovered an island.

Q&A. John Carney makes another ‘stealth musical’ with ‘Begin Again’

4 Be persistent without being annoying Full also stresses that you shouldn’t give up if there is a particular person you want to connect with. “If someone doesn’t respond to your email [right away], there are so many reasons why,” she points out.

At the same time, remember to respect your mentor’s time. “Be humble and assertive, but not necessarily aggressive,” says Gill.

From left to right are Forbes “30 under 30” members Edun Full, Kane Sarhan, Meg Gill and Mark Arnoldy . EVERY DAY CONNECT, FAIRFIELD INN AND SUITES

Navigating the world of busi-ness can be tough — especially when you’re in the early stages of your career. Finding a men-tor can be the key to success.Enter the Every Day Connect campaign, which is sponsored by Fairfield Inn and Suites as a way to support the connec-tions between young profes-sionals and their mentors. “I think mentorship is important to everyone, but a lot of people are afraid to reach out,” says Fairfield Inn’s Vice President of Global Brand Management Shruti Buckley.

A Fairfield survey reveals that 66 percent of those surveyed said personal rela-tionships have helped their careers. We talked to four entrepreneurs named to the Forbes “30 under 30” list for their suggestions on how foster a strong mentoring network.

Personal relationships are more important than ever in the job world.

Find and keep a career mentor

2 Don’t think of it as formally fi nding a ‘mentor’ Kane Sarhan, who co-found-ed @Enstitute, a program that matches young people with entrepreneurial ap-prenticeships, says the best mentoring relationships come about organically. “We fi nd with a lot of our stu-dents, mentors just develop naturally once you fi nd someone you connect with,” he says. “Those really strong personal relationships are long lasting.”

3 Find someone you can bounce ideas off of “It’s always good to have diff erent people, opinions and perspectives around,” explains Edun Full, the cre-ator of SunSaluter, a device that makes solar panels more effi cient. Full says her mentor has been instrumental in the early growth of her company. “Just talking things through and weighing the pros and cons was really key to mak-ing the right decisions,” she says.

1 Don’t be afraid to reach out If you are shy about approach-ing someone in your fi eld, don’t be. Fairfi eld’s survey reveals that 77 percent of em-ployed adults said they were willing to help new grads fi nd work. But it’s important that young people show that they are serious. “I didn’t go out looking for mentors,” says Meg Gill, an executive with Golden Road Brewing. “I went out looking to learn. A lot of people don’t just let someone come up to them, so you have to be passionate about something.”

5 Let your mentor know the impact he or she has had Always remember to let your mentors and advisers know that you appreciate them. “I’m constantly showing gratitude toward my mentors,” says Sarhan. “A lot of times, one problem with my generation is the lack of humility,” says the 26-year-old. He says that doing things as simple as sending thank-you cards, birthday presents and just calling to catch up can go a long way.

6One last tip

You should be working to help your mentor, too

Mentoring isn’t a one-way

street. Mark Arnoldy is the

healthcare to remote parts of

Nepal. He says younger work-

ers shouldn’t discount their

talents. “If you are sincere

Columnist’s equal measures a pleasureRe: ‘Tom Foreman just isn’t very funny’ (Metro, June 24) Thank you, Metro, for Tom Foreman. Every time I see his column I feel encouraged and anticipate an intelligent, courageous, informative and acute commentary, which invariably reveals the pitfalls of massive trends and soothes my unspoken worries. It is

heart-rending to watch a horde of lemurs jump to their deaths just because the majority “has it.” I believe one reason why letter writer Jonathan Hecht deems, oh so assuredly, Foreman unwitty is that the witticism is of the Irish bull type: It turns onto himself.

Mr. Foreman is too com-passionate to condemn. He detects and highlights in oth-ers the danger he recognizes as innate in each one us, including himself: one that must end in massive, gleeful suicide.

Thank you, Metro, for a

Give Congress an inch, and it’ll take all your rightsRe: ‘Guns make some safer’ (Metro, June 26-29) There is no such thing as reasonable or sensible gun legislation when lawmakers are focused on restricting or denying Second

Amendment rights to law-abiding citizens. The majority of gun laws in this country are aimed at law-abiding gun own-ers and do nothing to address the issues involving criminal use of fi rearms. Gun owners have learned that legislators cannot be trusted to do the right thing. As soon as one right is compromised, the law-makers come back for more.CHUCK FAZIO, VIA EMAIL

Altidore’s status still unclearU.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann would not say for sure this past weekend whether injured star striker Jozy Altidore would be available for Tuesday’s game against Belgium (4 p.m., ESPN), but remained “hopeful.”

“Every day is a big step forward with Jozy,” Klinsmann said. “We are optimistic we’ll have him be a part of the Belgium game.”

The forward did not

participate in soccer-related activities at practice Saturday, according to reports, and was simply seen jogging during the session.

Klinsmann may opt not to start Altidore Tuesday but have him available off the bench. MATT BURKE

France, Germany both looking to advance Monday

France will get Monday’s World Cup action in Brazil underway when it squares off with Nigeria (12 p.m., ESPN). The French were 2-0-1 in group play, drawing their last match last Wednesday against Ecuador, 0-0.

Germany, fresh off its 1-0 Group G-winning victory over the United States last Thursday, will take on Alge-ria for the right to advance to the quarterfi nals. The Germans were 2-0-1 in group play, blanking Portugal, 4-0, before drawing with Ghana, 2-2, in their second contest. MATT BURKE

Celtics guard Rajon Rondo averaged 11.7 points and 9.8 assists last season. / GETTY IMAGES

Optimism now guarded with Celtics’ rosterNBA. The presence of Marcus Smart may not lead to the trading of Rajon Rondo just yet.

When Adam Silver read aloud the name of “Marcus Smart” at the NBA Draft last week, many immediately predicted that Rajon Rondo would be on the next Amtrak out of South Sta-tion. While Rondo could still absolutely be traded between now and July 1, 2015 — the day his current contract with the Celtics comes to an end — it shouldn’t be ruled out that the Celtics will at least experiment with the bruising Smart and the quirky Rondo on the floor at the same time in 2014-15.

Danny Ainge, Wyc Grous-beck and Brad Stevens have all, of course, already said that Smart and Rondo could play to-

gether. Do they all truly believe that? Who knows for sure, but Ainge is certainly one who isn’t afraid to think outside the box.

When Ainge was head coach of the Phoenix Suns in the late 1990s, he had a team that thrived with three and sometimes four guards on the floor at the same time. Jason Kidd, Kevin Johnson, Steve Nash and Rex Chapman (three of four described as traditional “point guards”) would often drive opposing teams nuts with their frenzied, unorthodox style of play — and it resulted in 56 victories that season for Ainge’s Suns.

Smart is considered a rela-tively poor shooter, and when you add in the fact that the Celtics already have dreadful numbers from the outside (tied for 27th in the league in 3-point field goal percentage at .333 in 2013-14), it makes one wonder if the C’s can keep pace with

playoff teams. For instance, the Spurs were first in 3-point field goal percentage in 2013-14.

The drafting of Kentucky swingman James Young should help shooting matters and Av-ery Bradley has shown that he is at least capable of knocking down mid-range jumpers and corner 3-pointers. But when Smart and Rondo are on the floor at the same time, one can bet that defenses will sag to the basket.
