Warhawk Soccer 2013 Season Coaching Staff Meet the Warhawks 2012 Recap Record Book This is AUM

Despite a program-best 10-match undefeated streak to start last season, the 2013 AUM women’s soccer team will look to avenged a disappoin ng fi nish to the year, as it returns several key members from a squad that fi nished 11-6-2 overall and 6-4-1 against Southern States Athle c Conference foes. Relying on an a acking off ense and a s ngy defense, the Warhawks fi nished 2012 ranked in the NAIA’s top-25 in shots per game (21.63), assists per game (2.26) and goals per game (3.05). The program this year will have a very similar look and feel as the one that took the fi eld in 2012 as the team returns eight starters. Despite the hot start and falling just shy of reaching the NAIA Na onal Tournament, fourth-year head coach Jamey Newsome and his 12 returners enter the 2013 campaign with a chip on their shoulder. “Last year was easily the most talented group I have coached during my tenure,” Newsome said. “Based on that talent, I think we were all a li le disappointed by the way we fi nished. We felt like we underachieved, but also felt like we learned a lot about playing as a team and the importance of being ready to play every game. Hopefully, that will be a benefi t to us as we prepare for this season.” Newsome and his team begin the 2013 campaign ranked fourth in the SSAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll and among the others receiving votes in the NAIA preseason poll. The Warhawks return fi ve second-team All-SSAC performers in goalkeeper Holly Clarke, defenders Maren Heller and Arna Omarsdo r, as well as midfi elders Eyrun Agnarsdo r and Maria Arngrimsdo r. AUM did, however, lose fellow second-team all-conference selec on and leading scorer, Margret Albertsdo r. “We return eight of 11 starters, so I am excited about having a strong core back,” Newsome said. “Margret will certainly be missed. She understood

her role, did her job and was very opportunis c with the goals that she scored. Hopefully the players that are taking her place learned from playing with her.” AUM also returns starters in defenders Nicole Le ord and Ida Bjerklund, midfi elder Krista Hagen

and forward Dagmar Gunnarsdo r. In addi on, forward Alexandria Sveinsdo r returns for her third season with the program, while sophomores Kendall McCardell and Courtney Omodei are each expected to have an increased role with the team. “We had a lot of players that scored goals for us, so having a good por on of them coming back is defi nitely nice,” said Newsome. “But like any year where you lose players, it gives an opportunity for someone else to step up and take on a bigger role with our program. I think we will have a team with enough pieces where everyone will contribute and we will be a diffi cult team to defend.” The Warhawks also added fi ve talented newcomers, a group which should improve depth and also challenge for star ng posi ons. Joining the program for the 2013 campaign is senior defender Larissa Brauns, junior goalkeeper Chloe Crook, sophomore midfi elder Lila Remache and freshmen defenders Amy Glynn and Eileen Merino.

Goalkeepers For the past two seasons, Clarke has been the anchor at the back of the Warhawks’ defensive unit. The 2013 season will be no diff erent, as the Norwich, England, na ve, returns a er allowing just 17 goals in 19 games last season, while pos ng three shutouts and combined to record eight clean sheets. “No one can dispute that Holly is in the argument for top goalkeeper in our conference,” Newsome said. “She had a great Spring and con nues to get be er every day. She has matured into a leader on our team, which is invaluable at the keeper posi on. The team in front of her plays with a lot of confi dence knowing that they have a quality keeper behind them. They can take chances on defense without worrying about what is behind them. We are excited to have her back.” Crook, a NJCAA All-American last season at Monroe Community College in New York, will likely serve as Clarke’s back up. However, Newsome believes Crook will not se le on the role. “Chloe will push for playing me,” Newsome said. “She was an All-American at her junior college and has played at the collegiate level. Holly obviously has the advantage of having been here, but I think Chloe will really challenge her and make her be er.”

Defenders The defensive back line will have a similar feel to last season, as AUM will return three starters, but also try to replace the produc on and presence of Melissa Ledesma’s departure. Newsome feels good about his defense and will be relying on the veterans to contribute on both sides of the ball. “With three starters returning, we are looking to fi ll the void le by Melissa,” Newsome said of the defensive unit. “I think we return a solid group. It looks like Courtney will step into the Melissa’s spot, but we also have Larissa who can play the center-back role.” Returning are Omarsdo r, Bjerklund and Le ord, a trio which started a combined 56 games for a defense that allowed only 17 goals in 2012. Omarsdo r leads the group a er earning all-conference accolades last season. The senior a empted just six shots from her center-back posi on, but contributed a goal and an assist for the off ense.

“Arna has the poten al to really excel this season,” Newsome said. “She is one of those players who tend to get overlooked at mes because she doesn’t have big sta s cs. She consistently does the job and is a solid player. She is strong defensively, helps keep possession and gets our a acks started. She is not a defender who just boots the ball downfi eld. It is huge to have defenders that can start the a ack from the back forward. Arna is that kind of player and we are excited about her being back.” Le ord, a junior, and Bjerklund, a sophomore, were equally valuable in the defense from their outside back spots. The tandem combined for fi ve assists last season and will look be counted on to do much of the same this season. “Nicole and Ida have the poten al to be all-conference performers,” Newsome con nued. “Nicole is a very versa le player, having the ability to move the midfi eld or up top. Last year she played the majority of her me at the right defender for us and could play that same role this season. Ida was our constant at le back. She does a good job defending, but also ge ng forward in the a ack, which is something we look for in our defenders.” Omodei and Brauns will both challenge for the spot vacated by Ledesma. Newsome is confi dent that each player has the ability to fi ll to void without skipping a beat. “Courtney is a lot diff erent from Melissa and is more like Arna,” Newsome said. “She is a very technical player and is skilled with the ball. She is a tall, physically-imposing athlete, who needed a year to adjust to the speed of the college game. She worked hard in the weight room to get stronger last year, which I think will really help her. I think her ability to control the ball will help us even more than a physical, hard-nosed defender. I think she will have a key role with our team this year. “Most of Larissa’s experience is at defensive center midfi eld, but I an cipate pu ng her in the back a lot,” Newsome added. “She can, however, step up into the posi on and contribute. She will see a lot of playing me this season and we expect big things from her.”

Addi onally, McCardell will add to the depth, but will also factor into the rota on in the midfi eld. “Kendall could also see me as a defender,” Newsome said. “Last season as a freshman, she played both defender and midfi eld, and will provide us depth at both posi ons. She was in a similar situa on to Courtney last year, as she was a freshman on an experienced team. She has had a year to get used to the game, develop and get stronger, so I expect her to have a larger role on our team this season.” The Warhawks also added a pair of fi rst-year defenders in Glynn and Merino. Glynn comes to AUM from London, England, while Merino is a local product who prepped at Brewbaker Tech. “We brought in Amy, who can play outside back, and fi ts our mold for defenders,” Newsome said. “She defends well and is very good with the ball. “Eileen is coming off an injury and hasn’t played in the last year,” Newsome added. “She played for a well-respected club team that has a history of producing quality players. She has been around quality soccer during her career, but I am not sure what to expect from her this season. I think she has a bright future and plenty of poten al, but it will all depend on how quickly she can become fi t and get back into the swing of things.”

Midfi eld One of the Warhawks deepest posi ons is also one of its most cri cal, as the midfi eld serves both as a line of a ack and a line of defense. Luckily for Newsome, AUM returns four keys to the team’s success last season in Hagen, Heller, Agnarsdo r and Arngrimsdo r. Hagen her sophomore campaign with a goal and fi ve assists, a mark which ranked second on the team. “Krista was our main starter at defensive midfi eld last year,” Newsome said. “She is really an unsung hero for our program. She’s not asked to score many goals or take a ton of shots, but she is the glue between our back line and our midfi eld. She is really a great extension of me, as she communicates well and is able to get things organized on the fi eld.”

Heller ba led injuries for much of last season, yet was s ll able to make her presence recognized by earning all-conference accolades. She scored three mes last year, while assis ng on three other goals. “Maren has the ability to play either defensive midfi eld or a acking midfi eld,” Newsome said. “She was one of our captains and was an all-conference player for us last year. I think she has the ability to elevate her game even higher. She ba led some nagging injuries last year, so many of the coaches didn’t get a chance to see her play. I think she is one the most important players on our team. She does it all, but some mes tries to do too much. I have high hopes for her this season, both in her produc on and her leadership.” Agnarsdo r enjoyed a standout fi rst season with the Warhawks, scoring six mes and assis ng on another goal. “Eyrun is an a acking midfi elder who really played well for us last season,” Newsome said. “She is very, very quick and loves to take people on. She is very good with the ball, drawing defenders in and then passing or scoring goals. Last season she showed that she is a talented player by earning second-team all-conference honors. This season, we are hoping she can do even more.” Even a er showing she can be successful at the collegiate level, Newsome thinks Agnarsdo r can elevate her game to an en rely new level in 2013. “As the season went on, I really felt like Eyrun grew as a player and as a leader for us,” Newsome said of the junior. “She has the right drive and a tude. She wants to play hard every day. She learned a lot last year and now has a good feel for conference. I think she has the poten al to take her game to a whole new level.” Arngrimsdo r is the team’s top returning scorer. In her inaugural season with the Warhawks she ne ed 12 goals and recorded four assists, while leading the team in shots on goal. “Maria has great pace,” Newsome said. “She is aggressive and loves to take people on. She is a very good athlete and is extremely fi t. She is one of those players who tend to end up on every opponent’s scou ng report simply because of what she can create on her own. She is a valuable part of our team.” In addi on to the four returning midfi elders, AUM also welcomes Remache, a transfer from newly-added conference foe Mar n Methodist. “Lila is very good with the ball, but is undersized compared to our other midfi elders,” Newsome said. “She is quick and loves to help with possession. I think she will easily fi t into the mix for playing me.”

Forwards The a acking front line of Sveinsdo r and Gunnarsdo r look to have another successful year a er combining for six goals and eight assists last season. Despite only having two forward listed on the depth chart, Newsome is pleased with the eff orts the pair gave last year and is hoping for the same in 2013. “Alex and Dagmar each had good seasons for us last year,” Newsome said. “They are both extremely compe ve and both are not happy unless they are scoring goals in bunches. Alex is a combina on between a winger and forward. Dagmar will likely play the center forward posi on for us this year. They both have the poten al to be all-conference

players. They both did exactly what we hoped for them to do last season, and I expect them to do the same this year.”

The 2013 Season When looking over this season’s schedule, Newsome recognizes the challenges ahead, but is op mis c about the task at hand. The Warhawks face eight teams ranked in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 or receiving votes, four of which are conference foes, in No. 7 Mobile, No. 12 Mar n Methodist, No. 14 William Carey and No. 22 Brenau. “The Southern States Athle c Conference is arguably the best soccer conference in the na on,” Newsome said. “In the fi nal NAIA poll of 2012, we had fi ve teams ranked in the top-25 or receiving votes. As a conference, we lost Lee, the winner of four of the last fi ve na onal championships, but added Mar n Methodist, who fi nished 13th. I think that opens the door for all the teams in our league to establish themselves as the top team.” Newsome acknowledged that the wear-and-tear is not only physical when playing in such a compe ve league. “Conference play is a grind, both physically and mentally,” Newsome added. “You have to be on top of your game every day. You can’t have any mental slip ups or you will get beat by anyone in the league. We look forward to the challenge.” Addi onally, the Warhawks will host defending na onal champions Lindsey Wilson in October and No. 6 Embry-Riddle in a neutral-site match early in the season. Despite the tough slate, Newsome intends to keep his expecta ons simple for the upcoming season. “We want to do the best we can in every match and improve every day,” Newsome concluded. “Hopefully, that will lead us to the na onal tournament. I believe we have the talent to accomplish that, but we are not going to spend a lot of me talking about it. We just want to get out there and get to work.”

The 2013-14 academic year marks the 14th year for Auburn Montgomery athle cs compe ng as a member of the Southern States Athle c Conference (SSAC). In Novem-ber of 2012, the conference announced an expansion and now showcases 16 member ins tu ons located throughout the southeast, including the states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee. Located in Norcross, Ga., the SSAC sponsors 15 intercollegiate sports including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, so ball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and fi eld and men’s and women’s golf. The conference staff features Commissioner Mike Hall, Assistant Commissioner Ka e Bright and an Eligibility Chair, Dr. Ron Melton. The SSAC was established in 1949 as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athle cs Conference with six member schools, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the conference was renamed the Georgia Athle c Conference and remained so un l 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the offi cial name was again changed to the Southern States Athle c Conference. The conference membership has worked for more than 60 years to maintain a level of compe on, excellence and quality that appropriately represents its member ins tu ons. Since the conference’s incep on and affi lia on with the NAIA, 29 SSAC teams and 11 individuals have claimed na onal tles, while 27 teams have fi nished na onal runners-up. Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the Na onal Associa on of Intercollegiate Athle cs (NAIA) since 1975. In those 38 years, AUM has claimed 22 na onal champion-ships and six of the school’s 10 varsity programs have appeared in a na onal championship game.

The NAIA, headquartered in Olathe, Kan., is a na onal organiza on with nearly 300 ins tu onal members and over 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athle cs. Since its introduc on of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering fi rst-rate athle cs programs. The NAIA has con nuously affi rmed its commitment to equality by becoming the fi rst na onal organiza on to off er ins tu onal postsea-

son opportuni es to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow ins tu onal membership to historically black ins tu ons in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establish-ment of athle cs programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by suppor ng academic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and ac vity as an opportunity to inten onally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the fi ve core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefi t of each individu-al. In addi on, the Champions of Character program monitors each NAIA ins tu on’s commitment to the ini a ve with its Scorecard, which is divided into character training, conduct in compe on, academic focus, character recogni on and character promo on. For the third consecu ve year, AUM was one of 220 schools recognized as a Five Star ins tu on a er earning 73 points on a 100-point scale, a mark ed for the 75th-best total in the country.
