P A G E 2

Dear Friends,

I was in my office one Friday afternoon when I got a call. Kathy, a nominal member of the church, had been to the hospital that afternoon where she received the results from some tests. The diagnosis was cancer. She was terminally ill. Could I stop over and see her?

I stopped over that afternoon and visited with her. Kathy had lots and lots of issues and problems. Although extremely bright and well educated, Kathy came from a majorly dysfunctional family. Her family tree was littered with mutant branches that were twisted and distorted, and filled with ugliness. She had an addictive personality. She chain smoked, drank too much, gambled too much, took too many drugs, and now was facing her mortality. She wanted some words of hope. I offered the only thing I could, that Jesus died for us and rose again to offer us the hope of eternal life. I said a prayer and told her we’d talk some more.

The phone rang the next morning around 6:30. When the phone rings before 7:00 in the morning, it’s never good news. It was the funeral director calling me to let me know that Kathy had died during the night. I was shocked. I had just left her the evening before and while her diagnosis was terminal, death was not eminent. My initial fear was that she had taken her own life. That was not the case, however. She just died in her sleep.

The funeral director and I began the task of contacting the family and making plans for the funeral service. It wasn’t easy. Kathy had passed on her family’s legacy of dysfunction that she had inherited from her parents to her children. One was an alcoholic who drank one beer after another while we met. Another was a workaholic who ran a local restaurant where we had to meet because he couldn’t take time off to plan his mother’s funeral. The other tried to give off the appearance of being a normal, successful person. She prided herself on her attractive appearance and her talent, but behind the façade she was a bundle of insecurities and contradictions. When we met, she told me, “Just say something nice,” as if that was the whole point of the funeral service. It seemed like her expectation, or maybe her hope, was that I would just make up a bunch of nice things to say about her mother.

Instead, I talked about God’s love and grace that is extended to all, and that our hope comes from Christ’s resurrection. After the service, she thanked me. For a brief time the message penetrated through the layers of problems and issues that filled her life.

Easter, the central event in Christian faith, is coming. Some, like Dietrich Bonhoeffer would argue that Easter isn’t just the central event in Christian faith, it is the central event in all of human history. It is the reason the church exists. “Jesus died, but rose again.” Those words make a difference.

We live in a time when church has been reduced to being one of many options in a smorgasbord of activities from which people can choose. But we have something to offer that no one else has. We have words of hope. Jesus died, but rose again. No one else can offer what the church alone offers. The church offers a survival kit to those all. The kit includes a light to illumine the darkness. It offers powerful words of hope that knock down walls of despair. It offers healing to those who are sick or broken. It opens the eyes of those who cannot see, and it feeds and nourishes those who hunger and thirst for meaning. It makes a difference.

Join us as we prepare to celebrate the good news that Jesus Christ is risen.

Grace & peace,

Jim

For March 24-Palm Sunday, we will once again feature Dr. Wesley Roberts on the organ. The service will open with a procession of palms introduced by the ringing of handbells. The anthem will be "Ride On, Ride On in Majesty" by Graham George a noted composer, organist and choir leader from Canada.

On Easter Sunday, March 31- we will once again have with us as organist, Dr. Jan-Piet Knijff. The Introit will be "Entrata Festiva" by Flor Peeters, the Belgian composer and organist and will be accompanied by organ and brass. The Anthem will be "He is Alive" a Fanfare for Easter, words and music by Jay Althouse a prolific composer and musician educated at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Our brass ensemble includes: Luke Anderson, Michael Cotten, DiaShamar Marshall, Kellie Spoonamore, Lee Spoonamore, Dudley Spoonamore.

Once again, we welcome new singers to the Choir Loft and basses are needed most urgently to offset those pesky tenors. Practices are Wednesday evenings from 7pm to 8:30pm. And Sunday morning warm ups are in the Sanctuary Choir Loft at 10:30. Questions??? Ask any choir member. Our continued thanks to Joan Stansbury for her ongoing leadership.

ONE in 24!

That’s the ratio of food assistance to the hungry in the U.S. that comes from private sources like churches. We are doing a great job of that, for sure! But since 23/24ths of food assistance to needy people in the U.S. is provided by federal programs, shouldn’t we also try to hold our legislators accountable for doing their part? That’s what Bread for the World is all about – an organization that calls policymakers’ attention to the plight of the poor and hungry, encouraging them to maintain the “circle of protection” around “the least of these.” Soon, your World Mission Ministry Team will be asking you to write letters to our congress people, with specific goals in mind. You’ll receive a sample letter by email. On Sunday, April 14th, we’ll all bring these letters for dedication in worship before mailing. Stay tuned!

HANDS TO WORK, HEARTS TO GOD Meals on Wheels

For people who are alone and homebound the sound of a knock or ring of the doorbell every morning means a hot meal at no cost is being delivered by the friendly drivers of Meals on Wheels. This meal may be the only means by which they can stay in their own homes and meet nutritional requirements. It may also be the only conversation they have that day with another person. Many years ago our church began supporting the program financially and supplying drivers for Meals on Wheels. Right now there are 22 regular drivers from the Presbyterian Church and 8 substitutes who drive five meal routes every weekday. Often two meals are delivered at once on the day before a holiday. The meals are prepared in Lexington and driven by van to the Senior Citizens Center in Danville, where they are picked up by the volunteer drivers. Some drivers go one day a week, some go two days, some go in pairs, and some fill in when regular drivers are unavailable. All of these kind people make a commitment to provide this very valuable and regular service which is a tremendous contribution to our community. Unity Baptist Church also supplies drivers, as does the Senior Citizens Center which runs the program and qualifies applicants. An average of 65 clients is served every weekday. That’s a lot of driving around town, a lot of cheerful greetings and a few minutes of friendly conversation to brighten the day for the mostly elderly people who are confined to their homes. It is satisfying for the drivers as well. We add our sincere thanks to the smiles of appreciation that are their usual reward. Blessed be our Meals on Wheels drivers. We couldn’t do it without you!

Stephen Ministry Recruitment Kick-Off

Phone A Friend

The popular quiz show, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire', offers contestants the opportunity to get help answering the questions posed on the show. Phone A Friend lets the contestant call someone who, hopefully, knows the answer to the question being asked.

What a relief it would be to have someone to call on when life sends us questions we are struggling to answer. And what a joy it is to be that person who is called!

Stephen Ministry is looking for men and women who can serve as those people at the end of that phone line. We are planning a training class for new Stephen Ministers this fall and will be looking for candidates in the coming weeks.

Stephen Ministers receive 50 hours of training in how to listen to, pray with and for, and be a supportive presence for people going through life's challenges. And they continue to receive continuing education and supervision by their fellow Stephen Ministers during their service.

There is an application to fill out and an interview to undergo. After training and commissioning, Stephen Ministers make a 2-year commitment to be available for caring assignments. They attend continuing education and/or supervision sessions twice a month.

Since its founding more than 13 years ago, our church's Stephen Ministers have met with almost 100 people in this one-to-one, confidential, Christ-centered ministry.

We have supported people as they dealt with changes and challenges ranging from divorce and job loss to the death of a loved one or serious illness.

Are you being called to be part of our ministry? Stephen Ministry will hold information sessions each Sunday morning in April to talk with you and answer your questions. Applications will be available starting April 2 and will be due in early May.

We invite you to prayerfully consider whether you are being called to join Stephen Ministry.

Generation Faith Fellowship Hall Convener: Liz Erwin This is an ongoing class that meets all year for coffee, fellowship and discussion on issues of faith and daily life - from parenting and relationships to spiritual growth. If you haven't participated in Sunday School before, or are looking for more of a casual atmosphere, this class may be for you!

March 3rd—24th

Religion and Politics in the Bible Room 120 Led by Dr. Robert Bosco (Centre College) This course will explore the potential political interpretations of the Bible, including both Old and New Testaments. The purpose of the course is to consider tensions and ambiguities in Bible stories, books, character, and episodes, not to arrive at the "truth" of what the Bible "really says" about political matters. We will focus on Genesis, Exodus, Kings, Job, the Prophetic Books, Acts, and the political meanings in the figure/life of Jesus.

Living Alone Room 122 Led by Katherine Orton Death of a spouse, divorce, or choice are just a few of the reasons why people today might live alone. Using the book, “Living Alone” by Herbert Anderson and Freda Gardner as a guide, this class will seek to support those facing this situation. Asking the question, “Can I live alone and still be whole?”, they maintain that wholeness in God’s sight depends on how we live our lives – whether with another or alone.

April 7th—28th

The Church in Africa Room 120 Led by Dr. Jonathon Earle (Centre College) These four sessions will explore the richness and diversity of Christian experience in Africa. It begins by exploring Africa’s pre-colonial Christian traditions in northern and central Africa. Following, we will look at Protestant and Catholic mis-sionary Christianity, respectively, focusing on the social processes through which Africans made Christianity their own. Finally, we will look at Pentecostalism, the fastest growing religion in Africa.
