Kony 2012 campaign leads to defaced Hub landmarksTold to “stop at nothing”while blanketing the city topromote the “Kony 2012”campaign, some activistscrossed the line when theyspray-painted the message ona Hub memorial.

Urged by the nonprofit In-visible Children, whichlaunched the controversial 30-minute viral documentaryabout African warlord JosephKony earlier this year, groupsof advocates hit the streets Fri-day slapping stickers on Tstops and plastering “Kony2012” posters all over Boston.

The push was part of a na-tional movement called “Cov-er the Night,” launched by In-visible Children, so peoplewould “wake up to hundredsof thousands of posters de-manding justice” for Kony’sactions. Kony is accused of us-ing children as soldiers incommunities in East and Cen-tral Africa.

Amidst the midnight mes-saging, however, some of thecity’s longstanding memorialswere defaced with red spraypaint.

On Boston Common, “Kony2012” was scrawled across thefront of the Boston Massacrememorial, sparking outragefrom city officials.

“Your message shouldn’t

overpower someone else’smessage,” said state Rep. Car-los Henriquez. “That’s a me-morial for people to recog-nize, and to use that as yourplatform — I understand guer-rilla marketing, but there is aline of respect.”

Henriquez has been work-ing on ways to curb graffiti inthe city, to separate art fromvandalism.

City officials said theywould work with police andthe “Graffiti Busters” programto remove the paint.

“And I am sure police willbe looking into the circum-stances around it,” said DotJoyce, spokeswoman fromMayor Tom Menino’s office.

The Boston Massacre memorial was one of the many pieces of public property that was vandalized over the weekend.

Supplying thesupportersInvisible Children, the non-profit group behind theKony 2012 initiative andFriday’s “Cover the Night”movement, posted a videoon its website and YouTubepage telling participants totake action by placing thepropaganda on public prop-erty.

“We will do much morethan create awareness. Wewill advocate globally, wewill serve locally, and wewill turn this digital revolu-tion into a physical onewhen we hit the streets,”the promoters wrote. The group even provided“action kits” to activists, prior to Friday’s event, filled with posters andstickers.

Opinion

APRIL IS FORAWARENESS

TIM MURRAYLIEUTENANT GOVERNOR

Across the country and in Massachusetts, April is Sex-ual Assault Awareness Month. As chair of the Gover-nor’s Council to Address Sexual Assault and DomesticViolence, I encourage all Massachusetts residents tolearn of the available resources that help prevent sex-ual assault incidents and also available services thatsupport victims of sexual assault.

According to the Center for Disease Control andPrevention, nationwide nearly 1 in 5 women and1 in 7 men have been raped in their lifetime, andmore than 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men have ex-perienced other forms of sexual violence and un-

wanted sexual experiences. These statistics are similar atthe state level, here in Massachusetts.

While rape and sexual assault can be difficult issues todiscuss, it is essential that we have this conversation

because everyone has a role toplay in prevention. For example, the MBTA is raising awarenessthrough public service advertise-ments to notify potentialperpetrators that law enforcementis paying attention, and encourageriders who are assaulted tocontact the police. Thanks in partto this program, Transit policehave made more than 85 arrestsand more and more allegedvictims are coming forward to re-port incidents of assault.

Parents, clergy, program andcommunity leaders, school andcampus officials are also encour-aged to educate themselves on re-search related to sexual violence, and also take the extra step to cre-ate improved safety measureswithin the community.

Every city and town inMassachusetts is servedby an area rape crisisprogram that can helpdevelop effective safety

plans and policies, and also offer hotline services, medicaladvocacy, counseling, prevention education and profession-al training. As a father, husband, son, brother andlieutenant governor, I encourage you to take time thismonth and going forward to have a conversation withfriends and family about safe and healthy relationships, andlearn what policies are in place or should be implementedin your school, faith community or workplace. To help makeour commonwealth safer, let’s have this conversation.

Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney made ene-mies of at least one prominentanti-gay conservative this weekover his selection of openly gayRichard Grenell as a campaignspokesman. By doing so, theRomney campaign made a sub-tle admission: It’s not overlyworried about far-right fringevoters. At this point in the elec-tion, Romney et al are firmlycourting the center.

Grenell, a dedicated Repub-lican who has worked with for-mer UN ambassador (and con-servative warrior) John Bolton, fought and lost a battle for legalrecognition of his same-sexpartner. Bryan Fischer of the

American Family Association— a talk radio host popularamong the religious right —was crystal clear in his disap-pointment with Grenell’s hirethis weekend.

“Romney picks out & loudgay as a spokesman,” Fischertweeted. “If personnel is policy, his message to the pro-familycommunity: drop dead.”

There may be some truth inthat. Of course, Romneydoesn’t want any voters — cer-tainly no Republicans, that is —to drop dead. But it’s also truethat, regardless of what he saysor whom he hires, polls showRomney carrying the right-wing, even a majority of thosewho have been crying fowl formonths over his allegedly mod-erate credentials.

The Santorum and Gingrich

voters held out for a while; butfollowing Santorum’s cam-paign suspension, the numbersbounced back well into Rom-ney’s favor. A Gallup poll fromlast week found Romney hold-ing 90 percent of Republicanvoters, with President BarackObama holding 90 percent ofDemocrat ones.

The election, these numberssay, belongs to the center.Hence the courting of inde-pendent minds and the relax-ing of far-right dog whistles.

For many conservatives, themost important issue at stakein November is defeating Oba-ma. With no real remainingcompetition, Romney couldprobably claim these voterseven if he came out himself.

Infertility is something youdon’t hear a lot about, amongpeople in their 20s, but Infer-tility Awareness Week aims toget more people accepting ofthe issue. Barbara Collura, ex-ecutive director of RESOLVE,The National Infertility Associ-

ation, says there’s a stigma andshame attached to infertilitythat’s prevented it from beingdiscussed properly. Anyone inthe AIDS world will tell youhow 25 years ago peoplethought it was contagious—now, everyone speaks aboutit,” she says. “But with infertili-

ty, we haven’t gotten to thepoint where people are readyto open up.” Until society nor-malizes infertility, don’t ex-pect to see people runningmarathons shouting “woohoo! I’m infertile!” she warns.

So why is infertility such asensitive subject? One reason:Because it revolves around sex.

“The moment someonefinds out they can’t reproduce, they feel let down by theirbody. The way they see it isthat it’s not performing theway it ‘should’ be,” explainsCollura, who also believes thatgetting people talking abouttheir reproductive system theway they do about sex is theonly way to increase publicawareness.

Giuliana Rancic, the 37-

year-old ‘E! News’ personalityand reality star, is one of therare celebrities to have openedup about her battle with infer-tility. Rancic and husband Bill’sjourney into parenthood andattempt at in vitro fertilizationwas aired on their reality TVshow “Giuliana and Bill” andwatched by millions of peopleworldwide. The show took adramatic twist when Rancicwas diagnosed with breast can-cer, further jeopardizing herchances of becoming a mother.

‘For some of thewomen in their 20sand 30s watchingRancic’s show, itwas the first they

had ever heard about infertili-ty — and the only place they

had heard about it,” says Col-lura. “This is not where wewant people to be getting thissort of information, but atleast they’re getting some-thing.”

So where else should thoseafflicted go for information?Facebook. Twitter. Blogs likeThe Infertility Voice, whosefounder wrote the column onthis page. Social media oftenallows you to be anonymous.“You could be in the placewhere you are willing to shareyour story but not yourname,” says Collura. Eitherway, it’s the conversationthat’s important.

How to cope

If you’re feeling sad: The endless waiting and hop-ing has left you feeling irrita-ble, lethargic and extremelysad: Write down a list of allthe good things you do havein your life. This will help youvisualize your strengths, andforget your weaknesses.

If you’re feeling angry:The fact you can’t get preg-nant makes you feel helplessand vulnerable: Don’t let thisanger consume you. Aerobicexercise such as running orswimming can help relievesome of the accumulatedtension. Relaxation tech-niques such as yoga can alsohelp you clear your mind.

If you’re feeling guilty:If repeated attempts at preg-nancy have been unsuccess-ful, you may start to believethat what’s happening to youis your fault: It’s hard to ac-cept that your body is out ofyour control. Acceptance isthe only way to realize you’renot a failure and that youcan’t go on blaming yourself.

‘I have gooddays andawful days’“You’re so young.”

I hear this a lot. A subtleimplication treads coyly be-tween each word: “You’re soyoung ... so it should be easyfor you to get pregnant.”

But the truth is, for meand 7.3 million otherAmericans, it’s just not thateasy. There’s nothing easyabout infertility. What does-n’t help are the manyassumptions people make:that infertility only affectsolder women who put theircareers first; that if we only“just relax,” we’ll conceive atthe drop of a hat; that we’reselfish for pursuing fertilitytreatments when we should“just adopt.”

It’s no wonder then somany people facing infertili-ty suffer in silence. I was 26when I found I was infertile.Relaxing won’t reverse mydisease and there’s nothingselfish about wanting tohave my own children.

I’m just like any otherneighbor, co-worker, sisteror friend out there: I’m just

infertile. I have good daysand I have really awful days.

So while I wait, I sharemy story. I talk about what itmeans to be infertile, how itaches and how I remainhopeful. I speak out becauseI’m tired of being silenced byassumptions thatundermine the very real, very valid experiences of in-fertility patients nationwide.

I speak out because Iwant everyone tounderstand what infertilityis really like. I speak out toend the silence, to help erasesocial stigmas surroundinginfertility because stigmabreeds shame. I have no rea-son to be ashamed: I justhave a disease. And if youhave infertility, you have noreason to be ashamed, either.

treatments

IUI (intrauterine insemina-tion) is the placing of sperminto a woman’s uterus duringovulation. Lower tech, less in-trusive methods such as IUIare becoming increasinglypopular but their success ratedepends entirely on the ini-tial cause of the infertility.

Clomid is a widely prescribedand inexpensive pill helpswomen get their ovulation insynch. Clomid tricks the bodyinto believing estrogen levelsare low, leading to the releaseof more eggs. It is one of themost successful fertility drugs.

Adoption can be costly andchallenging in many waysand its success is hugely de-pendent on external factors:Should you adopt domesti-cally or internationally? Howlong are you prepared towait? Are you mentally ableto consider another’s child asyour own?

In 2010, 47.7 percent of women fell pregnant after IVF cycles.

Where most music conferenceslike SXSW focus primarily onperformance showcases, Re-think Music is an industry con-ference for the professionals.

Sponsored by Berklee Col-lege of Music, the BerkmanCenter for Internet and Societyat Harvard University, BabsonCollege and midem (the yearlytrade fair for the music indus-try in France), this conferencefocuses on establishing a dis-course between people in-volved in all facets of music.Their mission is to figure outhow to push the industry for-ward, something that desper-ately needs addressing in theever-evolving technological ad-vancements of the digital age.

“We’re trying to bringthought leaders together,” ex-plains Allen Bargfrede, who isthe executive director of Re-think Music for Berklee Collegeof Music. “By bringing [musicindustry] stakeholders, academ-ics and students together, wecan help to look forward.”

Leaders from industry inno-

vators like YouTube, Spotifyand Nokia share the same plat-form as musicians like GZAfrom Wu-Tang Clan, speakingon hot button issues like the fu-ture of the cloud, how to stayrelevant as an artist and “TheMusical Ecosystem in 2015.”

One especially relevant par-ticipant is Karmin, the duo ofBerklee alums who recentlyused their overnight YouTubemegapopularity to catapultthem into a musical guest spoton “Saturday Night Live.”

Another example of thebold approach to Rethink, thismorning, social media guruand author Seth Godin givesthe keynote address, simply ti-tled “Making Something Hap-pen.”

“All musicians are entrepre-neurs,” says Bargfrede. “Wewanted someone outside of themusic industry to give theirthoughts ... and open outside ofthe box.”

HAIL TO THE

‘VEEP’The less-than-flattering moments of our ‘perfect’

politicians are examined in the new HBO comedyStar Tony Hale is a member of the vice president’s

dysfunctional staff who will do anything for his boss

Tony Hale’s latest rolefinds him in an un-healthy, codependentrelationship with a

domineering woman. He isneurotic, but smart. And we’renot even referring to Hale’sreprisal of Buster Bluth on thenew episodes of “Arrested De-velopment” slated to hit Net-flix next year.

Before he straps on Buster’sprosthetic hand (bit off by aseal, fans of “Arrested” will re-call), Hale appears as anotherlovable loser: Gary Walsh, thepersonal aide to vice presidentof the United States SelinaMeyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), onHBO’s new political satire“Veep.” (Armando Iannucci, the man behind the razor-sharp political commentary,“In the Loop,” created theshow.)

“With Buster’s social anxi-ety, if he were placed in Gary’ssituation, he would be commit-ted [to a mental institution],”Hale says. Meanwhile, we learnthrough the sitcom’s documen-tary style that Gary thrives un-der pressure, ready at a mo-ment’s notice with whatever

his boss may need — be it aconversational factoid on thepoliticians she may be chattingwith or hand sanitizer.

“Gary is very, very effi-cient,” Hale says. “He carriesaround this bag with all of Seli-na’s stuff, everything from anextra pair of shoes for her to —if needed — a letter of resigna-tion.”

That letter of resignationwould be for Selina, Hale clari-fies, because without his job,Gary would be lost.

“If somebody were to comeup to him and say, ‘You’refired,’ I think he would fallapart,” Hale says. “He’s a guywho should have left his job inhis 20s, but the fact of the mat-ter is his identity is wrappedaround Selina. He pretty muchworships her. I have a feelingthat his mother has been car-ried over into Selina, so I’msure there are a lot of child-hood wounds that are beingplayed out.”

Mama Bluth would be soproud.

BILL GRAY

Politicians arehumans, tooBehind closed doors, VicePresident Selina Meyersand her team behave badly— very badly. But the morepreposterous the situationthey find themselves in,Hale hypothesizes, themore truthful it seems.

“Especially in this elec-tion year, there’s so muchposturing [on thecampaign trail], there areso many perfect soundbites. There’s so much

presentation, and one per-son cannot be that positiveand mechanical andperfect all the time,” hesays. “They have to have abreakdown; they have togo behind the scenes andscream at somebody orlose their mind or get inse-cure, cry or whatever, andI love that this show showsthat. It shows Selina put-ting on her happy face —and then she goes behindthe scenes and justscreams at the top of herlungs. It shows theirhumanity.”

Greta Gerwig is trying to find apicture of Diane Keaton on heriPhone.

“I like the way her hair is,”she says with her eyes still fo-cused intently on the screen inher hand. “I always get over-done for events and so I’m try-ing to look myself. I wanted tofind a good example of DianeKeaton hair because she justhad simple hair. It was neverlike, ‘wooosh,’” she says, mak-ing a big sweeping motion overher head.

As one might guess, spend-ing time with Gerwig feels

much like visiting with an oldfriend. Her calm, open de-meanor is disarmingly famil-iar. It’s telling that of all peo-ple, she’s trying for DianeKeaton’s ’do — as the two seemto have kinship for playingfidgety, awkwardly charmingwomen.

Known for her roles in tinyindie films and, more recently,in broader releases like “Green-berg” and “No Strings At-tached,” Gerwig is currentlypromoting “Damsels in Dis-tress,” which was written anddirected by Whit Stillman after

his 12-year sabbatical fromfilmmaking. She plays a fussycollege coed, convinced that

her campus would be a betterplace if everyone would tapdance, wear perfume and

shower more often. She’s notwrong, really.

And though Gerwig and hercharacter, Violet, don’t havetoo much in common, they doshare strong emotional and ol-factory connections.

“When I got to high school, every boy wore Polo Sport toall the dances,” she enthuses.“To this day, Polo Sport still isone of my favorite smells be-cause you never have crushesas intense as you have in highschool and the smell of PoloSport — it’s kind of gross — Ilove it.”

And if you’re looking to be-friend Gerwig, there’s one go-to scent that will reel her in.

“All the girls wore CliniqueHappy — and there was some-thing about the way that thatsmelled — even today if I meeta girl who is wearing CliniqueHappy, I’ll be like, ‘Oh, she’s really cool,’” Gerwig says, deadserious. “It has something todo with, ‘All the cool girls wearClinique Happy.’ These scentsstay with us.”

Greta Gerwig loves the smell of Polo Sport

The indie actress also explains why she automatically presumes women who wear CliniqueHappy are cool Though her latest film is called ‘Damsels in Distress,’ she is anything but

Other directors might not bebrave enough to attempt to topwhat is already a classic, but di-recting team Peter and BobbyFarrelly, known for their monu-mental success with films like“There’s Something About Ma-ry,” were unafraid of tacklingone of the most iconic comedyteams of all time. But PeterFarrelly says taking on Larry,Moe and Curly was not as muchof a no-brainer for the studios.

How did you decide that the moment was right to update of“The Three Stooges”?Now was the moment becausethe studio gave us the money. For 10 years, they were like,“No f—in’ way. We’re not doingit.” It was [about] trying to con-vince the studio that you couldtake these characters from 70years ago and put them into apresent-day setting and make itwork. There were so many rumoredcast members — everyone fromSean Penn to Woody Harrelson.Once you settled on Sean Hayes,

Chris Diamantopoulos and WillSasso, did you change the scriptto suit them better? We never write around anycast. The character is the char-acter and then the actor has tocome in and fit the bill — inthis case, probably more sothan ever. We wrote for Moe,Larry and Curly and we wantedthem to be exactly Moe, Larryand Curly and that was one rea-son why it was so hard to getactors. That was sort of intimi-dating to a lot of actors.

Can you talk about casting LarryDavid as a nun?Larry David plays Sister Mary-Mengele. Larry is probably themost influential comedy figureof the last 25 or 30 years. We’rehuge fans and we wanted to gethim in the movie. That was therole he found interesting. Hecould’ve played the dog if hewanted to. We just wanted himclassing up our project. The sequel to “Dumb andDumber” has been announced.Where do you want to take these

characters this time around? Before “Dumb and Dumber”came out, if I told you what thestory was, you’d be like, “Donot make it. Do not waste yourtime.” All I can say is that it’snot the type of plot that I canmake sound good. It’ll soundlike s— but trust me, it’s the ex-act same guys doing more ofthe same stuff, but we don’twant to give anything away. How did it come together? We’ve never done a sequel andthe only movie that we everwanted to do a sequel to is“Dumb and Dumber.” There’sno growth in these guys, andyou could do it over and over, and we could do it in our sleep. We always wanted to do it, butJim [Carrey] wasn’t ready untilnow. He saw it a year or so agoon video and he laughed his assoff and he was like, “This iswhat I want to do. I want tomake people laugh hard likewe did then.”

Over the last 30 years,Ginny Whitelaw hasbeen attempting to in-tegrate her study of

Eastern philosophies with hercareer in business leadershiptraining. As the co-founder ofFocus Leadership, Whitelawbrings her Zen leadership train-ing into offices across the coun-try. Her latest book, “The ZenLeader: 10 Ways to Go FromBarely Managing to LeadingFearlessly,” will be released thisweek by Career Press.

What can Western business cul-tures learn from Asian businesscultures, and vice versa? Western business leaders aregenerally at a level of develop-ment characterized by rational-ity and short-term, Wall Street

thinking — the limitations ofwhich have become painfullyobvious in the last 10 years.Asian cultures tend to take alonger view, and think moresystemically. The entrepreneur-ial spirit is certainly alive andwell in both Eastern and

Western cultures. However, speaking in general terms,Western cultures approachbusiness through the eye of theindividual, and Eastern cul-tures through the needs andnorms of the group. As a result,in Eastern business cultures, itis at times harder to bring yourfull creativity to work. How do Zen terms like “SmallMind” and “Big Mind” apply tobusiness leadership?Small Mind is looking at thingsfrom an ego perspective. It’sour usual way of thinking, which is unconsciously cen-tered on our self and our needsand fears in the situation. BigMind is “disappearing” into thesituation, becoming one withit, and using our personality toserve others.

How can a leaderwork toward the “flipin consciousness”that you describe inyour book? You have to work with thebody. One can actually feelthe difference between, say, tension and extension in thebody. One’s sense of self be-comes larger, freer and moreagile, leading to the ultimateflip from delusion to awaken-ing. Once we experience our-selves as a part of — not apartfrom, fearlessness arises.

DAN SCHAWBEL BRANDING YOURSELF IN AN UNCERTAIN JOB MARKET

Anew study by Millennial Branding andIdentified.com of four million profiles uncovers thatGen-Y (ages 18 to 29) is inadvertently using socialmedia profiles as an extension of professionalpersonalities. While 64 percent of Gen-Y workers fail

to list their employer on their profiles, they add an average of16 co-workers each to their “friend” groups.

What's more, they spend an average of just over two years attheir first jobs, meaning there’s almost a guarantee that theirFacebook audiences are full of potential new coworkers.

Here are three tips on how to navigate your Facebook ac-count knowing this:

Set parametersDecide if you want to add co-workers and managers onFacebook or not. If you don’t, then start a professional page andblock your personal profile from search. This way, your co-workers will only find and friend your professional page.

Filter yourselfSince you may end up with co-worker friends regardless of whoyou add or not, it’s important to keep in mind that everythingyou post could become public. Don’t say anything you don’twant a potential future co-worker to see who might turn yourremark into office gossip.

Control taggingIn the privacy menu, go to “Timeline and Tagging” and set yoursettings so that you must approve all tags before they publishon your wall. Also, turn off the setting that allows anyone topost on your wall. By doing this, you have more control overhow you’re perceived on Facebook.

It could be the small uptick inthe economy. It could be thefact that jobs that didn’t existbefore — think IT and socialmedia managers — are ever in-creasing. Whatever the case, midcareer changes aren’t allthat unusual anymore. While ithelps to research which indus-tries have room for crossovers, the process begins with know-ing you want a fresh start.

“What I have realized is howimportant it is to really figureout what it is that you want todo before transitioning,” ex-plains Lauren C. Lilling, whowent from finance and invest-ment banking to opening Keepit Sweet Desserts, a cateringand delivery bakery based out-side New York City. “It can be ahuge financial risk and verystressful and you truly need tobelieve in what you’re doing.”

Don’t have the cupcakeitch? Consider moving into anexpanding field. Career net-working website LinkedIn re-cently teamed up with theCouncil of Economic Advisorsto analyze industry growthfrom 2007 to 2011. Among thefastest-growing industries is so-cial media, which includes posi-tions you may see cropping upmore recently on job boards, such as social media managers.

Not surprisingly, IT andhealth care were also amongthe industries expected to ex-pand, and they have plenty ofroom for those looking for achange.

“Some of the skills requiredto succeed in these industriescan be acquired in others,” ex-plains Uva Coles, dean of careermanagement services at PierceCollege. “In other words, manycareer changers can leveragetransferable skills and experi-ence like accuracy, attention todetail, data entry, coding andmedical terminology.”

Packing it up? Just know where you’re going — then enjoy the ride.

day for me: My book,“BE FEARLESS: ChangeYour Life in 28 Days,”

hits bookstores. Years ago, Inever thought this would havebeen possible, especially as Iwas once so bad at writing thatmy seventh grade teachercalled my parents out of con-cern. I share this with you be-cause it brings me to the heartof my book: change.

Change is possible. Yet, tomany, change is elusive. Peo-ple stay stuck and they allowfear to get between them andwhat they truly want. They’vebeen looking for a shortcut —a way to get what they wantwithout having to face theirfears. Here are the most com-mon ways people keep them-selves stuck, either knowingly

or unknowingly:

WaitingRather than being proactiveand taking the initiative, peo-ple spend time hoping that theright person will magicallywalk into their life, that the jobpromotion will just materializeor that their spouse will sud-denly start behaving in a less ir-ritating way. If you wait foryour dreams to unfold, theywill remain dreams. If you takeaction, you’ll turn your dreams

into a reality. “BE FEARLESS”will give you the courage totake that initiative.

WishingWishing for things doesn’t cre-ate change. For that reason, Iam not a fan of “The Secret”and the so-called Law of Attrac-tion on which it is based. Ican’t tell you how many clientscame to me after they wishedand wished for better lives —only for their lives to continu-ally get worse. “BE FEARLESS”teaches you how to stop wish-ing and how to start living.

BlamingHave you blamed others foryour problems? Perhaps you’vegotten angry at your boss, yoursignificant other or someoneelse for making your life miser-

able. “BE FEARLESS” will teachyou how to stop focusing onwhat you can’t control and, in-stead, to put your energy intoall of the things you can con-trol. You can control what yousay and do. It’s not as easy tocontrol what others say and do.

Waiting, wishing and blam-ing will not lead you to the lifeyou really want. What will?Taking action. The “BE FEAR-LESS” program will show youjust how to do that.

To fix environment,elect green leaders

Thank you, Metro, for yourfantastic Earth Day editionthis weekend! Not only was itinformative and empowering,it was also a pleasure to read. But there was one really im-portant thing missing fromyour checklist of ways to gogreen, however: Voting forpro-environment leaders. While we can all make posi-tive changes in our personallives, many environmentalchallenges are just too greatto face alone as individuals. We need environmentallyminded elected officials at alllevels — federal, state andcity — to truly transform ourworld for the better. The win-ners of this year’spresidential, congressionaland state legislative contestswill decide the fate of our en-vironment for years to come.

So in addition to recyclingand curbing our use of plasticbottles, let’s all commit togreener representation. MARCIA BYSTRYN, VIA E-MAIL

For some women, $25 maynot seem like a lot of money. It’s two movie tickets or din-ner with friends. Three things we learned yes-terday afternoon as the Bruinsforced a Game 7 in their dra-matic quarterfinals series withthe Capitals:

Seguin saves the seasonTyler Seguin was ranked justbelow Tim Thomas and BobbyValentine as Saturday’s Bostongoats after failing to finish ona number of scoring chances

in the Game 5 loss. But Seguinwas the biggest hero of all inGame 6 yesterday, and not justbecause he scored the over-time goal to force Game 7.Seguin, who didn’t have apoint in the series after thefirst five games, came up hugein the third period with astolen puck at the blue lineand hard rush that set up An-drew Ference’s [temporary] go-ahead goal. The Bruins needSeguin to create offense, andmaybe yesterday finally tookthe lid off.

Redemption, Part IIPut away the posters and milkboxes. We’ve found David Krej-ci. Like Seguin, Krejci didn’thave a goal in the seriesthrough five games. And likeSeguin, Krecji scored yester-day, but make his biggest playaway from the goal, stealing aNicklas Backstrom clearingpass and setting up the playthat resulted in Seguin’s over-time game-winner. The Bruinswill need all of their offensiveweapons on task Wednesdaynight, and if both Krejci andSeguin are engaged, the Bru-ins’ chances of advancing im-prove dramatically.

Doubting ThomasHe was off his game in thethird period on Saturday, andhe gave up a couple of shakygoals yesterday. Yes, Thomas

made a highlight-reel sticksave on Marcus Johannson inthe second period, but Thomasis clearly not the same Mr. Au-tomatic he was last postsea-son. You could make the casethat the Bruins won on yester-day despite Thomas, and thatis not a comforting thoughtheading into a Game 7.

Defense does not restQuest to defend Stanley Cup

continues in dramatic fashionBoth offenses heating up heading

to Game 7 in Boston on Wednesday

Rich Peverley and the Bruins refused to fall yesterday in Washington.

Period by period

A look at how the Bruinsforced a Game 7:

1 Rich Peverley found thenet first for the B’s whileDavid Krejci scored on thepower play. In between,Washington’s Mike Greenfound the net.

2 Jason Chimera tied thegame at 2 late in the sec-ond.

3 Andrew Ference gave theB’s a 3-2 lead but the Caps’Alex Ovechkin tied it at 3later in the period.

Tyler Seguin silenced thesold-out Verizon Centercrowd, scoring 3:17 intothe first overtime to sendthe series back to Bostonfor one final game.

In the news

Flyers advanceThe Philadelphia Fly-ers ended the seasonof their in-state rivalsyesterday as they beatPittsburgh, 5-1, inPhiladelphia.

Claude Giroux(above) continued hisdominance in the se-ries, posting a goaland two assists inGame 6.

Ilya Bryzgalov tal-lied 30 saves in thewin for Philly, who asa No. 5 seed in theEast now await itssemifinal opponent.

Season mayalready beslipping away

On heels of epic collapse, Soxmust right ship in a hurry BobbyV. already on the hot seat? FaceTwins, White Sox on road this weekLet us look back on all thattook place during the firsthomestand of the season forthe Red Sox.

They won three straightgames by a combined score of31-11, then lost five straightby a combined score of 46-17.

Jacoby Ellsbury suffered aserious shoulder injury.

Stalwart Kevin Youkilis wascalled out by new managerBobby Valentine, who wascalled out by stalwart DustinPedroia.

The park turned 100.Jon Lester matched the

shortest start of his career inthe same game that saw MarkMelancon give up six runswithout recording an out.

David Ortiz hit .531 (17-for-32) with 10 RBI.

The front office made 16separate player moves, includ-ing a trade for former Cubsoutfielder Marlon Byrd.

Clay Buchholz gave up fivehome runs for just the secondtime in his career.

The bullpen turned a 9-0lead over the Yankees into anembarrassing 15-9 loss.

Valentine said his team had“hit bottom.”

There was a rainout. And the dish ran away with

the spoon. It’s safe to say that the club

never experienced a homes-tand like this one in its first100 years, and may not in itsnext 100. At least it ended on apositive note; the rainout gavethe Sox a chance to rest, flyearly to Minnesota and takestock of the young season.

However, when they do,every one of them will come tothe same conclusion: It’s ugly.

Perhaps some Midwesternhospitality can help. The Soxwill play three games in TargetField and then four in Chicago. It marks the end of a season-opening gauntlet through theAL elite. That means nothing ifthe club cannot figure out away to get consistent startingpitching and some semblanceof relief — the bullpen has giv-en up an unconscionable 42

earned runs in 42 2/3 innings,good for an MLB-worst 8.44ERA.

Relief may be on its way, atleast for a few days. DanielBard, the former setup manwhose name will be utteredwhenever bullpen issues arediscussed, was skipped in therotation due to the rainout.Valentine said Sunday thatBard will be available in reliefleading up to his next start, scheduled for Friday in Chica-go.

Perhaps having Bard as anoption out of the bullpen willbe just what the doctor or-dered. Perhaps the club usesthese next few days to figureout ways to replace him in therotation and make this a per-manent move. Perhaps thatshuffle can right the ship. Ifso, perhaps the road trip willbe as intriguing as the homes-tand.

Nah. That’s impossible.

“Our pitchingperformance has toimprove. That’s thebottom line. There’sa lot of differentways to improveand we’ve got tolook at all thoseways.”RED SOX GM BEN CHERINGTON

Bard skipped

Red Sox pitcher Daniel Bardwill once again work out ofthe bullpen, Bobby Valen-tine said Sunday.

Bard was scheduled to startlast night against NY, but thegame was postponed. The26-year-old righty is 0-2 thisseason with a 4.63 ERA.

Bobby Valentine, left, made plenty of trips to the mound this past weekend.

Daniel Bard will move back to the bullpen.
