The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have taken the next steps in the agency’s comprehensive efforts to identify improper Medicare payments and fight fraud, waste and abuse in the Medicare program by awarding contracts to four permanent Recov-ery Audit Contractors (RACs) designed to guard the Medicare Trust Fund. Learn the different audits and how not to trigger one by preparation.

There is data emerging that the increase in audits coming from CMS is affecting access to oxygen for Medicare beneficiaries. Know how to insure patients keep or obtain this much needed therapy. Recog-nize metrics that need to be included in the medical record to dem-onstrate the medical necessity that CMS is seeking before making payment.

1:30PM – 2:30PM Training the COPD Patient: Getting it Right the First Time Speaker: Bob Messenger, RRT

The current HME business environment demands that providers exploit every opportunity to become more effective and efficient. This includes how they train COPD patients to use and maintain their oxygen and other equipment. This presentation will identify the reasons why oxygen patients are particularly difficult to train and will discuss technical versus clinical training and who can provide each. The concepts of adult education will be reviewed and age/education appropriate training approaches will be discussed.

2:45PM – 3:45PM Oxygen Conserving Devices Speaker: Bob Messenger, RRT

Conserving devices are an integral part of providing long-term oxygen therapy. Because there are no performance standards, clinical outcomes vary between devices. This pre-sentation describes the physiology and mechanics of oxygen delivery. Continuous flow is compared to constant bolus volume and constant minute volume conservers. Each method of oxygen delivery offers benefits and limitations that will be explored.

This course is designed to give exam candidates comprehensive preparation for the RES-NA ATP examination. The course is intended for individuals familiar with wheelchairs and seating & positioning, and therefore expands upon other areas of interest such as ECU’s, Augmentative Communication, Computer Access, Funding Sources & Legislation, and Er-gonomics. The course will provide attendees with detailed information about the exam content and question breakdown percentages, as well as critically important standardized test taking strategies. This course includes a practice examination that is administered on a pro-rated timed basis to give attendees a feel for the type of questions they will experi-ence. The practice exam is reviewed with attendees with the full explanation of answers and methodology.

The outcomes for PAP therapy at one year are dismal, at approximately only 50 % of pa-tients continuing their therapy. This ultimately increase costs to the health care system, and causes a decrease in positive patient outcomes. This session will focus on getting the best use of technology to enhance patient outcomes while having an impact at the same time.

Briefly review the modes and features of 1st and 2nd generation home ventilators, and compare and contrast those with the modes and features of 3rd generation home ventila-tors. Special attention will be devoted to modes and features that are unique and previously unavailable in homecare such as PRVC, Adaptive Peak Flow, Adaptive Bi-Level, and Adaptive Triggering, and graphics monitoring.

If the perspective of every stakeholder was considered when setting up patients on PAP therapy who would everyone agree is the best decision maker for the patients device and appliance? This lively discussion will center around “brand scripting” and what the HME can do to help contain control over their own business while driving up adherence rates for compliance.

2:45PM – 3:45PM Ensuring the Best in Transitioning the Hospital Ventilator Patient to Home Care Speaker: Eric Freer

Briefly review the transition of patient form the hospitals to the home. Getting ventilation patients home faster is one key to reducing in-patient costs. But keeping them from being readmitted is equally important. The transition from hospital to home-based care is crucial in helping decrease health care-system costs and improving the quality of patient care. The attendee should come away from the lecture with a better understanding of trends in health care economics and ventilation products for transition.

This session will include an OSA overview followed by CPAP overview. We will then ven-ture into Introduction to AutoCPAP including the algorithms and detection methods.

Setting up a wheelchair for a client can be very challenging at times. The last thing that providers and therapists want is to have to open a manual to program the power wheel-chair in front of their client. Learn how to program and optimize the driving parameters for the clients comfort with controlling the wheelchair with Q-Logic electronics. Program the driving parameters of the wheelchair electronics and then get into the power wheel-chair and feel the changes of hand controlled driving and Enhanced Display programming.

This session will offer a “SWOT” analysis of the internal and external HME environment with the purpose to assist managers in their continuing strategic planning processes.

3:45PM - 4:30PM HME in 2012 & Beyond: Challenges Exist, but Opportunities Abound Speaker: Mark J. Higley

Legislative, regulatory, reimbursement, and other market uncertainties continue to hinder the near and long term strategies of home medical equipment providers. Overall, HME operators seem to have acknowledged a politically insecure future. As Washington winds up to implement Round 2 of competitive bidding and further reimbursement cuts appear likely, a positive outlook may be difficult. However, as Part 1 of this presentation will exhibit, demographics and other indicators remain most favorable. This session will also offer a “SWOT” analysis of the internal and external HME environment with the purpose to assist managers in their continuing strategic planning processes. Acknowledging many HME busi-nesses will have to retool and retrain to deal with Capitol Hill, opportunities in HME abound. In Part 2, in conjunction with a competitive bidding/MPP status update, we’ll discuss alter-native revenue opportunities and an overall assessment of the industry.
