Christmas traditionsaround the globe

Families across the globe cherish theirChristmas traditions. Customs may beunique to every family, but many countriesboast their own unique traditions as well.Australia: Many Australians celebrate

Christmas by coming together at night tosing carols outside. That's not as chilly asit might sound, as Christmas in Australiaactually falls during summer vacation.England: Contrary to Australia,

England's weather around Christmastimeis much colder. Many of England's tradi-tions resemble those popular in NorthAmerica, including wrapping gifts, hang-ing stockings over the fireplace and gath-ering around the Christmas tree. Kids inEngland write a letter with their wishes toFather Christmas, but unlike mailing thoseletters like many North American childrendo, English children toss their letters into afire so their Christmas wishes can go upthe chimney.France: Christmas celebrations in

France begin several weeks beforeDecember 25, but Christmas Eve is mostspecial to many natives of France. OnChristmas Eve, church bells ring as peoplesing noels, or carols. The following day, afeast is enjoyed upon returning home fromchurch.Germany: In Germany, the weather is

cold during the Christmas season, and inthe weeks leading up to Christmas familiesbake sweet bread, cakes with candiedfruits and spicy cookies. Advent wreathsare popular in Germany and are purchasedfour Sundays before Christmas begins. The wreaths have places for four candles, and families light a candle on the wreatheach Sunday.Sweden: Christmas celebrations in

Sweden begin on December 13, the daythe country celebrates St. Lucia's Day.Celebrations for St. Lucia, the patron saintof light, are intricate and involve thewhole family. A couple of days beforeChristmas is when many families selecttheir Christmas tree.

Joy to the WorldWe are what we consumeEating a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with turkey and mashed potatoes makes

consumers less likely to buy on impulse, which might affect their shopping on BlackFriday, historically one of the busiest retail shopping days of the year, according to twoUniversity of Utah marketing professors.

In "We Are What We Consume: The Influence of Food Consumption on ConsumerImpulsivity," Arul Mishra and Himanshu Mishra show how the types of food con-sumed during Thanksgiving can influence impulsive choices; for instance whether con-sumers buy on sales the next day or not.

"Most of us don't connect what we eat to our subsequent choices," Arul Mishrasaid. "However, our research shows that types of food, such as turkey, make peoplebehave less impulsively. Such people are less likely to buy products available at a dis-count and will find it easier to restrain their impulsive urges and choices."

In other words, if you're looking to spend less this holiday season, eat a goodThanksgiving meal.

And what about cutting down on impulse buying the other 364 days of the year?Try protein shakes, which - like turkey - have high levels of serotonin and also werefound to reduce consumers' impulses. "Given that people consume several types ofprotein drinks for breakfast, they should be made aware that such drinks can reducetheir impulsive responding," Himanshu Mishra said.

The authors suggest that if consumers are made aware that serotonin from specificfoods can reduce impulsive product choice and responding, they could use this infor-mation to modify their behavior.

Q: Loosely translated from Dutch to

English, Dunder and Blixem mean

While Rudolph might be the mostfamous reindeer, there remains no docu-mented evidence of a red-nosed reindeerguiding Santa's sleigh on an especiallystormy Christmas Eve. But just becauseno one has yet to find the real Rudolph, that doesn't mean we don't know a fewthings about Santa's sled buddies.

•Reindeer are also known as Caribouin North America.

•Females generally weigh between170 to 260 lbs., while males are oftenmuch larger, weighing as little as 200 lbs.but as much as 460 lbs.

•Reindeer reside in both the Arctic andSubarctic, and hunting of wild reindeerand herding of semi-domesticated rein-deer is important to several Arctic and

Subarctic people.•Reindeer fur can vary considerably.

In northern populations, reindeer tend tohave white fur, while southern popula-tions are darker in color.

• Reindeer size can also vary depend-ing on location, as southern reindeer pop-ulations tend to be larger than their north-ern counterparts.

• In most reindeer populations, bothmales and females grow antlers. Amongdeer, reindeer have the largest antlers inrelation to body size.

•Males often battle with each other bylocking antlers for the right to mate withcertain females.

•During migration, some reindeerreach speeds of 37-50 miles per hour.

Each Christmas, children acrossAmerica hang up their stockings forSanta to fill with toys and treats. The tra-dition has been going on for centuries andis practiced in many nations around theworld.

The exact origins of the Christmasstocking tradition are unknown, but manyhistorians point to a 16th-century Dutchtradition in which children would filltheir clogs with a treat for Sinterklaas andhay for the donkey he rode from house tohouse. In turn, Sinterklaas would thankthe children by filling their clogs withsweet treats or coal if they had been bad.

According to historians, the Dutch tra-dition may have stemmed from a legendinvolving a poor man and his marriage-age daughters. Upon the death of hiswife, the man had lost much of wealthand could not provide the proper dowriesfor his daughters. Unable to marry, thedaughters were very sad, and so was theirfather. Upon hearing of the family'splight, St. Nick wanted to help, but heknew better than to offer the poor butproud man charity. Instead, he rode by thefamily's house one day and tossed pursesof gold down the chimney. The gold land-ed in the daughters' stockings they hadhung to dry by the fireplace. The family

rejoiced and wasvery grateful toGod and St.Nick.

Whatever theorigins, the stock-ing tradition wascemented in printwith the publicationof "'Twas the NightBefore Christmas" in the19th century. In the poem,"the stockings were hungby the chimney withcare,/In hopes that St.Nicholas soon would bethere." Recalling thatscene, Thomas Nast createdstockings hanging from the mantel in hisillustrations for George Webster's "SantaClaus and His Works" in 1886, revivingthe stocking tradition.

Today, children across the world con-tinue to hang stockings for Santa to fill, while others put out their shoes, hearken-ing back to the Dutch tradition. The chil-dren wake up on Christmas morning, eager to see what goodies the jolly oldman has left them. Retailers help Santaout by running stocking-stuffer specialsthroughout the holiday season.

Dear Editor,

I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says,

"If you see it in The Sun, it's so." Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?

-- Virginia O'Hanlon, 115 West Ninety-fifth street.Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a

skeptical age. They do not believe except what they see. They think that nothing can bewhich is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they bemen's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant,in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by theintelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity anddevotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beautyand joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would beas dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry,no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except insense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extin-guished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might getyour papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch SantaClaus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove?Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most realthings in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever seefairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there.Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in theworld.

You may tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is aveil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strengthof all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glorybeyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! He lives, and lives forever. A thousand years from now,Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad theheart of childhood.

(Published on the editorial page of the New York Sun on 21st September, 1897.)

Gift wrapping tricks and tipsThe holidays are here and that means

shoppers have started to stockpile gifts forthose they love. Once the shopping rush isover, the time to wrap all of those greatfinds and treasures has come.

Although some people are gift-wrapgurus, there are many others who feel thattheir wrapping skills are lacking.Regardless, anyone can create delightfulwrapped gifts with a little know-how.

Prepare: The first step to wrapping isto have all of the supplies in one place. There are some people who have actuallydedicated small rooms as gift-wrap sta-tions. While you don't have to go this far, find a large table and keep your tape, tags, paper, ribbon, scissor, pen, and otheraccessories nearby.

Also, sort out the gifts according torecipient and have any gift receipts handyto wrap up with the gift.

Wrap at a time when there are no dis-tractions and you can devote your attentionto the task at hand, like after children havegone to bed or during the day when no oneis home.

Paper or Bags?: When purchasingwrapping paper, it may be tempting toskimp on the quality of the paper to savemoney. However, a thicker, higher qualitypaper will make wrapping go moresmoothly. That's because it will be lesslikely to tear on boxes or when you'rerolling out and cutting it.

Thicker paper means you'll also be ableto achieve more intricate folds and bettercreasing around boxes. It also may bemore forgivable around oddly shapeditems.

Gift bags are the go-to wrapping medi-um when you're short on time or haveitems that are not easily wrapped withpaper. Because they come in a variety ofsizes -- and even giant plastic bags to con-tain large gifts -- they are often more con-venient.

Other Tips: There are different tipsthat can help with wrapping.

•Buy neutral-patterned wrapping paper

that coordinates with other papers. Thisway if you run out of one type of paperyou can stagger other pieces and make acollage of papers so there's no waste.

•Use ribbon to dress up a gift and directthe eye away from any imperfections.

•Keep a stack of paper scraps and use itinstead of tissue paper to fill in gift bags.

•Keep scissors sharp for clean cuts.•Pack smaller items or oddly shaped

things into a different container that is eas-ier to wrap.

•Roll up clothing and place into a papertowel tube to turn the wrapping into acandy cane shaped gift.

Practice often makes perfect when itcomes to wrapping gifts. Having the rightpaper, a few decorative supplies and somepatience can ensure that gifts look festivethis year.

Candy canes popularCandy canes are very popular holiday

treats and are often used to decorateChristmas trees. That hooked shape cer-tainly makes them whimsical and able tohang on tree boughs. But candy canesweren't always the curved and colorfultreats they are today. In the 1700s, candycanes were nothing more than straightwhite sticks of sugar candy used to deco-rate Christmas trees. A choirmaster atCologne Cathedral decided that having theends bent to depict a shepherd's crook andpassing them out during church serviceswould help keep children quiet. It was notuntil roughly the 20th century that candycanes acquired their red stripes. Some sur-mise that the candy cane is shaped like ashepherd's crook to represent Jesus Christ, who tended to his flock of supporters.Others say that it's a "J" for Jesus.Regardless of their shape, hundreds ofthousands of candy canes are now manu-factured and shipped for the holiday sea-son each year.

Plan your shoppingThe holiday season is among the most

stressful times of year. With long lists ofthings to do, meals to prepare, family andfriends to entertain, and gifts to buy, many people embark on the holiday sea-son with more fear than cheer. And withso many people trying to spend less thesedays, preparing for the holidays hasbecome that much more challenging. Butby planning in advance and establishing aholiday shopping game plan, men andwomen can save money and maintaintheir peace of mind.

Start at the bottom line. The best wayto avoid overspending during the holidaysis to establish a budget -- and then stickto it. Before making any holiday purchas-es, determine a holiday spending limitthat is acceptable to you and your spouseor partner. The figure should include notonly the cost of gifts, but expected expen-ditures for holiday entertainment andentertaining, decorations, travel, anditems such as clothing and homeimprovements.

Know as you go. Know what portionof a holiday budget is for gifts and keep arunning total of expenditures as you shop.

Be an informed shopper. There aredeals galore in the run-up to the holidaysand it pays to compare prices and offersbefore making any purchases.

Make a list and check it twice. Planyour purchases ahead of time to avoidimpulse buying. By having a gift in mindfor each person on your list, you will savetime, money and headaches.

Consider family gifts. If there are anumber of families on your gift list, con-sider giving a single gift - or gift basket -that everyone can enjoy. A waffle iron orice cream maker, for example, is a giftthat foodie families will savor for years tocome.

Give the gift of your time. Some of themost cherished gifts have no price tagattached. Homemade gift certificates forthings like car washing, dishwashing, babysitting, lawn mowing, and closet

cleaning are always wonderful and wel-come. As the giver, just make sure tomake good on your promise.

Who do you tip?Holiday tipping is more common in

certain areas than others, but there are afew questions men and women can askthemselves when trying to decide if a per-son in their lives deserves a holiday tip orgift.

How often do you see the person?

How frequently you see a person can helpdetermine if that person deserves a holi-day gift or tip. For example, a child'sbabysitter or nanny deserves a littlesomething extra come the holidaysbecause you likely see that person on aregular basis. The same goes for the post-man or a dog walker.

Where do you live? Where a personlives also goes a long way toward deter-mining a holiday tip or gift. People wholive in apartments should show theirappreciation to the doorman and buildingsuperintendent with a tip or gift.Homeowners need not tip their localhandyman.

Is the person a professional? Menand women who provide professionalservices, such as accountants, lawyersand doctors, do not warrant a tip duringthe holidays. These professionals arealready paid handsomely for their servic-es, and many might even gift their cus-tomers.

Did the person go above and

beyond? Of course, there are no ironcladrules when it comes to tipping or giftingothers during the holidays. For example, many people don't find it necessary to tiptheir auto mechanic come the holidays forthe same reasons you wouldn't tip anattorney. However, if your auto mechanicprovided service that is above and beyondwhat you have a right to expect, then per-haps a tip or a thoughtful gift is in order.

When the holiday season arrives, gen-erosity often reigns. But men and womenshould not feel obligated to tip or giftevery person in their lives.

Holiday weight-gain myth is bunk, scientists sayThe common assumption that people put on 5 pounds

over the holidays has been studied and actually found tobe a myth, according to scientists at VanderbiltUniversity. In fact, weight gain from Thanksgivingthrough New Year's is, on average, closer to three-quar-ters of a pound to 1 pound.

And while this doesn't sound as drastic, what typical-ly happens with obesity is that people gain weight slow-ly and keep it on, said Vanderbilt obesity expert RogerCone, Ph.D., professor and chairman of MolecularPhysiology & Biophysics.

"It's not just overeating at holidays. We are chronical-ly overeating and under-exercising in this country," Conesaid. "And what happens then is your weight graduallycreeps up."

"If we do become obese, it's because there is a minordifference between what we are consuming and what weare burning," he said. "So the trick is to try to matchyour energy expenditure with your energy intake, to tryto control your diet overall and keep it healthy, and to tryto up your activity until the two are in balance."

Obesity leads to health-care costs that are 36 percent

higher, on average, and a 77 percent increase in medica-tion costs.

Liz Aleman, Healthy Children's program manager forMonroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, saidobesity is the result of poor choices and behaviors morethan genetics and metabolism, which means there is a lota person can do to fight obesity.

Focus beyond the Thanksgiving table and holidayovereating. The struggle with obesity is year-round.

Tips for healthier eating•Drink more water throughout meals to help feel

fuller, quicker.•Be careful with portions (one-half plate should be

fruits and vegetables, one-fourth proteins and one-fourthgrains.)

•Take a long walk after a meal; it is good for diges-tion and will make you feel better.

•Cook healthy versions of traditional recipes by usingresources such as eatbetteramerica.com and mypyra-mid.gov.

•Use whole grains instead of white for making bread,

stuffing andpasta.

•Substituteapplesauce for oilwhen makingbaked goods suchas cookies andcakes.

•Use herbsinstead of salt toadd flavor tofood.

•Adultsshould exercise 30minutes a day, whichcan be divided into 10-minute segments if neces-sary.

•Use local produce whenever possible. It tends tomaintain its nutrients longer than produce that has trav-eled long distances.

Stretching your budget to cover holi-day gifts and deciding what to give arecommon problems at this time of year.Inexpensive ingredients from your localgrocery store can solve both your budgetand gift-giving dilemmas. Gifts from thekitchen provide a way to give from theheart. Being fancy or elaborate isn'timportant -- being thoughtful is.

Here are some tips for giving food as agift:

•Avoid adding nuts or coconut torecipes for very young children or theelderly, as these ingredients could poten-tially create a choking hazard.

•If you know your recipient has dia-betes or is working hard to maintain ahealthy weight, don't tempt them withhigh-calorie treats. Opt for soup mixes orlow-fat, whole-grain fruit breads.

•Consider the household. A single per-son or couple may really enjoy a smallfruit basket, but would find a case ofgrapefruit overwhelming. Give items inproportion to household size.

•There often is an abundance of foodsduring the holidays, so think about a giftfor the weeks ahead. Coordinate a festivebasket complete with the recipe andingredients needed to prepare a specialmeal. Use a theme like Mexican, Italianor German.

•For friends or family members whohave limited cooking skills, give a Mealof the Month certificate. Pledge to pre-pare them a meal once per month. Thiswould be a special gift for those who livealone or someone who finds cooking achallenge. Plan to share the gift of yourtime and enjoy the meal with them aswell.

This recipe for Hearty Confetti BeanSoup Mix is an economical and nutritiousgift from the kitchen. Place the ingredi-ents in a jar with a tight-fitting lid andplace a festive ribbon on top or use holi-day stamps or stickers to decorate a

resealable plastic bag. Print a copy of therecipe on a card (youcan write or printout a copy, cut itout and paste iton the back ofan oldChristmascard or anote card)andattachthe recipebelow with a rib-bon. The deli-cious seasoningmix includedwith the beanmixture ensuresthat the soup will be both tasty and easyto make. The following recipe yields fourgift jars or plastic bags of soup mix. Thisrecipe will yield 8 to 12 servings of beansoup (a 1 cup serving contains 160 calo-ries).

Remember, with a little imagination, your grocery store can provide you withnumerous gift-giving solutions on a budg-et. Happy holidays!

reference to Christmas trees appeared.•The Christmas tree was first decorat-

Christmas cardsSending out Christmas greetings is a

tradition that is still common today. Haveyou ever wondered just how many cardsare sent across the country? According toHallmark Corporate, 1.5 billionChristmas cards, including boxed andindividual cards, are purchased and thensent every year in the U.S. This makesChristmas the No. 1 holiday for sendinggreetings, followed by Valentine's Day(144 million) and Mother's Day (133 mil-lion).

Few times of the year are simultaneous-ly as festive and dangerous as the winterholiday season. With the celebratory natureof the holiday season often comes theincreased risk for accidents, particularly onthe nation's roadways, where impaireddrivers often take to the streets after over-indulging at holiday parties.

According to the National HighwayTraffic Safety Administration, in 2008,more than 11,000 people were killed indrunk driving crashes involving a driverwith an illegal blood alcohol content (.08or higher). In almost all of these cases, thefatalities could have been avoided.

For holiday hosts, the safety concernsare two-fold. In addition to protectingguests, hosts must also be sure to protectthemselves. The nation's host laws varydepending on individual states, but hostscan be held liable, both in criminal andcivil court, if their impaired guests areallowed to drive home. While everyonehas the right to celebrate come the holidayseason, it's important for holiday hosts tobe extra cautious and always keep theirguests' safety and security in mind. Whenplanning a holiday party, hosts should con-sider the following tips to ensure everyonehas a fun time, and a safe and sound oneas well.

•Only invite close friends and family.Though the spirit of the season makes ittempting for hosts to invite as many peo-ple as possible, it's best to only invite thoseclosest to you. Hosts should know howeach invitee acts and drinks in a socialenvironment and limit the guest list tothose friends and family members whohave proven they can handle a drink ortwo without going overboard.

•Invite guests who know one another.Guests who know each other well are lesslikely to rely on alcohol to break the ice.Alcohol lowers people's inhibitions, mak-ing them more comfortable in social situa-tions, particularly when they might notknow everyone at a given event. But

close-knit groups don't need such devicesto loosen their inhibitions, and are morelikely to drink responsibly as a result.

•Greet guests and take their car keys atthe door. It's always polite for hosts togreet guests at the door. But it's even morenecessary to do so at holiday parties. When greeting, hosts can gauge whethertheir guests have gotten a head start on thefestivities and can also politely ask gueststo hand over their car keys. Everyone'sgoal is to have a fun and safe time, soguests should be willing to part with theirkeys at the start of the party as opposed toafter the party begins, when it might bemore difficult to convince guests to handover their keys.

•Stay sober. Hosts are responsible fortheir guests and their guests' safety.Regardless of local host laws, stayingsober is the only way hosts can accuratelydetermine if a guest is capable of drivingor needs a ride home. What's more, hostsmust stay sober in the event a guest doesneed a ride home.

•Feed the guests. Food should not be areplacement for drinking responsibly, butfood does slow the absorption of alcoholand helps fill guests up, making it lesslikely guests will drink to excess.

•Make the party an active event. Hostsshould plan certain activities or games toentertain their guests. With nothing on thedocket, guests are more likely to spendidle time drinking. Plan a gift exchange formore intimate gatherings, or play fungames that give guests something to lookforward to besides their next drink.

•Have transportation readily availableat the end of the night. For smaller gather-ings, hosts might be able to handle the des-ignated driver duties all by themselves. However, for larger gatherings, have taxicompany phone numbers readily available, and make it known to guests before theparty begins, whether on the invitation orwhen guests arrive, that no one is drivinghome if the hosts don't feel it's safe.

Host a safe holiday party

MysteriousMistletoe

•Scandanavians associated Mistletoewith Frigga, their goddess of love, and itmay be from this that we derive the cus-tom of kissing under the mistletoe. Thosewho kissed under the mistletoe had thepromise of happiness and good luck inthe following year.

•The practice of kissing under themistletoe was described in 1820 byAmerican author Washington Irving in his"The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon":"The mistletoe is still hung up in farm-houses and kitchens at Christmas, and theyoung men have the privilege of kissingthe girls under it, plucking each time aberry from the bush. When the berries areall plucked the privilege ceases.

•Mistletoe was used by Druid priests200 years before the birth of Christ intheir winter celebrations. They reveredthe plant since it had no roots yetremained green during the cold months ofwinter.

•Mistletoe is intriguing botanicallybecause it is a partial parasite (a "hemi-parasite"). As a parasitic plant, it growson the branches or trunk of a tree andsends out roots that penetrate into the treeand take up nutrients. But it also cangrow on its own and produce food byphotosynthesis.

•The mistletoe that is commonly usedas a Christmas decoration (Phoradendronflavescens) is native to North Americaand grows as a parasite on trees in theWest and also along a line down the EastCoast from New Jersey to Florida.

•European mistletoe (Viscum album)figured prominently in Greek mythology, and is believed to be The Golden Bough

of Aeneas,ancestor ofthe Romans.

•It is saidthat amongRomans, ene-mies who metunder mistle-toe would laydown theirweapons andembrace.

•Mistletoeis rarelyfound grow-ing on oaktrees, and as such was especially sacredto the ancient Celtic Druids. On the sixthnight of the moon, white-robed Druidpriests would cut the oak mistletoe with agolden sickle. Two white bulls would besacrificed amid prayers that the recipientsof the mistletoe would prosper.

•The sticky juice of mistletoe berrieswas used as adhesive to trap small ani-mals or birds. In South Africa, it is called"Bird lime" in English.

•According to custom in the English-speaking world, the mistletoe must nottouch the ground between its cutting andits removal as the last of Christmasgreens at Candlemas; it may remainhanging through the year, often to pre-serve the house from lightning or fire, until it was replaced the followingChristmas Eve.

•In the Middle Ages and later, branch-es of mistletoe were hung from ceilingsto ward off evil spirits. In Europe theywere placed over house and stable doorsto prevent the entrance of witches.

• In some parts of England, theChristmas mistletoe is burned on the 12thnight lest all the boys and girls who havekissed under it never marry.

Deep frying turkey tipsMany turkey lovers agree that deep

frying is the best way to produce the mostflavorful and moist version of the tradi-tional centerpiece of the Thanksgivingmeal.

If you're planning to use a turkey fryer, heed the following safety tips:

•Keep the fryer in full view while theburner is on.

•Keep children and pets away from thecooking area.

•Place the fryer in an open area awayfrom all walls, fences or other structures.

•Never use in, on or under a garage, breezeway, carport, porch, deck or anyother structure that can catch fire.

•Slowly raise and lower the turkey toreduce splatter and avoid burns.

•Never cook in short sleeves, shorts or

bare feet. Cover all bare skin whenadding or removing bird.

•Protect your eyes with goggles orglasses.

•Immediately turn off fryer if the oilbegins to smoke.

•Make sure the turkey is completelythawed, and be careful with marinades.Oil and water don't mix, and water cancause oil to spill over, creating a fire oreven an explosion.

•Don't overfill the fryer with oil.Turkey fryers can ignite in seconds afteroil hits the burner.

•Keep a fire extinguisher for oil firesclose at hand, and know how to operateit.

•Never use a hose in an attempt todouse a turkey-fryer fire.

• If you're burned, seek immediatemedical attention.

A quick guide to gift-giving etiquetteDeciding on and paying for holiday

gifts can be a challenge under the bestcircumstances. But then there are theinevitable "sticky situations" that canleave even the most experienced gift-givers scratching their heads. In thehopes of dodging major gift gaffes thisholiday season, here are eight tips forgracious giving and receiving.

•Review your gift list each year todetermine if any relationships havechanged and require a shift in your gift-giving plan.

•Don't ask non-family members onyour gift list what they would like. Thisnot only spoils the surprise, but putspressure on recipients to gauge howmuch you want to spend and requiresthem to get you something in return.

•Don't feel obligated to match whatothers spend. Buying gifts based on whatothers spend is both unnecessary and canlead to excessive expenditures.

•For workplace gifts, adhere to thecompany's policies and make sure thatgifts are given out of appreciation, notexpectation.

•Including a gift receipt is a good ideaand avoids potentially awkward situa-tions when an item doesn't fit or doesn'twork.

•Give holiday tips to those individualswhose service you count on throughoutthe year, such as hairstylists, babysitters, dog walkers, etc. An easy rule of thumbfor holiday season tips is to double theusual tip. For household employees, giveone week's pay.

•If someone surprises you with a gift, the best bet is to respond honestly. Letthe giver know that you are surprised, touched and appreciative as well as a bitembarrassed that you don't have a gift inreturn. Then let it go and add his/hername to your gift list for the followingyear.

•Don't arrive at holiday gatheringsempty-handed. A small gift, bottle of

wine or contribution to the evening's edi-bles is the right way to thank your hostsfor their invitation.

•Acknowledging gift givers is a must, but formal, written thank you cards areoptional. While handwritten notes arealways preferable and greatly appreciat-ed, e-mails are increasingly acceptable --especially for young people.

Regifting is now considered a (mostly)acceptable practice, as long as it's donethoughtfully, tastefully and within the fol-lowing guidelines:

•The regifted item should not behomemade or made especially for you.

•The item should be new, unused andin its original packaging, along withinstructions.

•Be sure to remove all previous wrap-ping and gift tags.

•Don't regift to friends or familymembers who have a reputation forreturning things they don't like. You don'twant to be asked for a gift receipt.

•Make certain that the original giverand the new recipient will never crosspaths.
