Galerie d’Orsay was founded in 2000, when Art Historian Sallie Hirshberg combined her extensive art knowledge and understanding of the business of fine art to establish one of the world’s foremost art galleries dealing with Masterworks.

Throughout her career she has implemented major art acquisitions for both public and private collections around the world and helped to promote artists, who are now enjoying world-wide recognition.

Today the gallery’s collection includes rare and museum-quality artworks, spanning seven cen-turies of fine art: from works by Old and Modern Masters to celebrated сontemporary painters, sculptors and printmakers that are not limited to those highlighted in this catalog.

I am so pleased to present to you our special anniversary catalogue, Celebrating the Best of Fifteen Years.

It has been an amazing journey which would not have been possible without your continued support, friend-ship and love for fine art. We are dedicated to maintaining a superb collection, and presenting to you new artists.

This anniversary year was marked by an array of exceptional events. In July 2015 Gallery d’Orsay made its debut at Art Southampton – a highly acclaimed juried international art fair, presented by Art Miami. Earlier this year one of the gallery’s mainstay artists – Bruno Zupan – participated in Art in Bloom festival and presented his work at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, which became a significant event in the celebrated artist’s career.

In 2015 we are celebrating our journey by hosting an exhibition featuring the highlights that have taken place over the last 15 years. The pages of this catalogue display those highlights while also showcasing our new arrivals - acquired especially for this exhibition. In 2000, Galerie d’Orsay proudly opened its doors with a prestigious exhibition of Rembrandt etch-ings, primarily of rare 17th century lifetime works pulled by the great Master. In addition, collectors laud Galerie d’Orsay’s display of original copper plates etched by Rembrandt’s own hands. This prec-edent setting exhibition elevated the Boston and Newbury Street art scene and set the bar for the gallery’s exhibitions over the next 15 years. Coinciding with Galerie d’Orsay’s exhibition was another Rembrandt celebration hosted by one of the great jewels of Boston – the Isabella Stuart Gardner Mu-seum. Embarking on the gallery’s strong philanthropic tradition to come, Galerie d’Orsay partnered with the museum to raise significant funds with the silent auction of a suite of Rembrandt etchings. It was an honor to support such an important organization.

The exhibition was an inspirational spring board for future acclaimed Rembrandt events. In 2006, the gallery celebrated the 400th Anniversary of Rembrandt’s birth with –“Etched in Time: Rembrandt the Printmaker.” Sallie Hirshberg, along with Galerie d’Orsay curator Christopher Kelley assembled an impressive collection of masterful etchings – exploring themes ranging from self-portraits and land-scapes to Old and New Testament compositions.

Catapulting the event further into the spotlight was the attendance of one of the world’s leading Rem-brandt experts, Dr. Gary Schwartz. The globally-recognized authority joined the gallery to provide a once-in-a-lifetime experience for d’Orsay collectors with a profound and lively lecture followed by an exclusive VIP evening with Dr. Schwartz. As author of a number of important tomes on the artist, including the widely referenced ‘The Complete Etching of Rembrandt’ and ‘The Rembrandt book,’ Dr. Schwartz has made a tremendous contribution to the understanding of this great artist.

The renowned Dutch realist painter, Jozef Isrëaels, once said of Rembrandt, “He is the true type of artist, free, untrammeled by traditions.” Rembrandt’s affinity for his meticulous etching technique, combined with his extraordinary talent and ingenuity, resulted in a body of work that has yet to be surpassed. Beginning in the 1620s, his passion would drive the artist to produce over 300 etchings. He is still today considered one of the greatest etchers. Pablo Picasso, who was inspired by Rembrandt and often copied his etchings once said: “Every painter takes himself for Rembrandt”.

Bruno Zupan has been a delightful mainstay of Galerie d’Orsay throughout our fifteen-year histo-ry. Discovering his work while on display in Soho, NYC, the gallery owner was taken by the bravura of brushstroke, radiant color and romantic imagery of this contemporary painter. His style defies traditional impressionism incorporating an energy and expression unique to Zupan. By collector demand, d’Orsay has each year featured an unparalleled collection of his new works capturing the sun-drenched Mallorcan hillsides and villages, the charm of Parisian streets and gardens, and the fiery skies and intimate canals of Venice.

In 2004, Galerie d’Orsay exclusively featured museum pieces by Zupan from the Chateau d’Ars Grand Exhibition, “The Year of George Sand,” as designated by the National Arts Council in Paris. Located in Le Chatre, France, the museum was completely given over to the Zupan exhibition with works commemorating the bicentenial birth of the famed 19th-Century French Romantic writer. Galerie d’Orsay was privileged to share these significant oils and watercolors with their collectors.

It is almost impossible to single out one of Zupan’s disparate landscapes, for every canvas is burst-ing with life force – which always attracts the eyes of visitors. Zupan’s inspiration comes from spending his life in the pursuit of light. He prefers to paint en plein air rather than in his studio, and his locations of choice are Mallorca, Venice, Paris, and New York. Picturesque vistas, the haphazard growth of flowers along stucco walls or well-worn footpaths, and the golden tones of sunset on Venetian architecture all owe their inspiration to Zupan’s observance of light and the recognition of the varied yet simple manifestations of its beauty. Art critic, Ed McCormack has described Zupan’s work as “active, alive, and visually autonomous.”

Galerie d’Orsay “Masters of Impressionism” in 2002 was only the first in what would become some of the gallery’s most anticipated exhibitions each year. Featuring an unparalleled collection of paint-ings, lithographs, and etchings by Mary Cassat, Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet, Camille Pissarro, Paul-Emile Pissarro, H. Claude Pissarro, Pierre Auguste Renoir and more, d’Orsay would set the standard for breathtaking impressionist events in the U.S. gallery scene. Future Impressionist exhibition would bring additional unique experiences for d’Orsay collectors including an evening with Léila Pissarro, the great granddaughter of Impressionist Master Camille Pissarro. Ms. Pissarro treated guests to an engag-ing lecture sharing very personal insight into the great patriarch of the Impressionist movement. She also discussed the incredible legacy of landscape painting established by her grandfather, Paulemile Pissarro, father, H.Claude Pissarro.

Galerie d’Orsay’s own Impressionist legacy continues offering Masters of Impressionism works on paper and canvas, drawing collectors from around the globe.

The introduction of Impressionism during the late 19th century, drastically altered the art world. Impressionism took the radical approach of reflecting contemporary life, elevating everyday subject matter, rather than following the traditions of classical figuration and heroic themes. The artists en-deavored to capture fleeting impressions of the scenes around them using bright, unmixed colors to record the effects of natural light.

2004Marc Chagall; Le Cirque

2004 marked one of Galerie d’Orsay’s most noteworthy and significant exhibitions: Le Cirque. Marc Chagall’s Circus Suite, a venerated and highly sought-after lithographic endeavor and one of his top bodies of work, was the exhilarating focus. This would mark one of the first exhibitions of the Circus Suite in its entirety in current times. The gallery radiated with brilliant color and em-barked our visitors on a journey of romance, phantasm, and escapism that left them astounded. Art collectors and enthusiasts flocked from around the world to Galerie d’Orsay to experience this once-in-a-lifetime event.

Following Chagall events would ignite art passions, as well, including d’Orsay’s 2008 “Chagall: Master of Color and the Dream.” The exhibition took a unique approach by including works from nearly every decade of Chagall’s life. Enriching the exhibition was special guest, Dr. Jonathan Wilson, award-winning author of the most recent artist book entitled, Marc Chagall. The gallery hosted an exclusive book-signing with the author and a private VIP Collectors evening treating col-lectors with a dynamic lecture and discussion led by Wilson. The master of color and dream-like whimsy, Chagall stayed true to his unique artistry resulting in a voice unlike any other of his time. One of the first living artist ever to exhibit at the Louvre, Paris, it is his ability to capture joy, romance, and the sensation of falling in love that calls out to viewers’ hearts and continues to draw enthusiasts to his work time and again.

Born in Vitebsk, Russia into a working class family, Chagall knew he was destined for great things. “I had to find some special occupation, some kind of work that would not force me to turn away from the sky and the stars, that would allow me to discover the meaning of life,” he once wrote. In 1910, he left the comfort of his native land for Paris and soon befriended such revolutionaries as Braque, Picasso, and the poet Apollinaire. With the outbreak of WWI, Chagall and wife Bella returned to Russia, and was appointed Commissioner of Fine Arts and Director of the Institute of Fine Arts in Vitebsk. Only four years later, the emergence of Marxist socialism encouraged Chagall to leave once again, eventually immigrating to the United States and finally France. We may now see Chagall’s extraordinary works in such esteemed installations as the Paris Opera House, Lincoln Center, New York, the Hadassah Synagogue (near Jerusalem), the Chicago Institute of Art and others. At a time when many artists followed the various popular artistic modes Chagall maintained a highly individualistic style that disobeyed all other motifs practiced among his contemporaries.

Galerie d’Orsay again astonished collectors in 2005 with a celebration of Jazz by the great modern master, Henri Matisse. Acclaimed by scholars as the most significant livre de l’artiste (artist’s book) in history, Matisse’s Jazz suite combines his incredible ability for painting, drawing and his gift for sculp-ture in an unprecedented synthesis. His mastery underscored by the simple act of cutting shapes from colored paper became the ultimate act of creation by his knowing where to start and when to stop. Another first by Galerie d’Orsay, Matisse’s Jazz exhibited in its entirety lit up the gallery with each of the brilliantly-colored pochoirs illustrating Matisse’s genius. Matisse has become a central figure in the gallery’s modern collection. Consistently included in d’Orsay’s most significant print events over their 15-year history, Matisse’s works are some of the most sought-after each year.

One of the most influential artists of the 20th Century; Henri Matisse is a leading figure of modern art and known for his unchallenged use of color, along with his fluid and original draughtsmanship. Born in 1869, he was a member of the Impressionist school and later a pioneer in forming the Fauvist group. Throughout his artistic life Matisse continued to experiment with the abstract and expressive use of pure color. He argued that an artist did not have complete control over color and form; instead, colors, shapes, and lines would come to dictate to the sensitive artist how they might be employed in relation to one another. He also believed in the total pictorial harmony of his art. “What I dream of,” he wrote, “is an art of balance, of purity and serenity devoid of troubling or disturbing subject mat-ter….like a comforting influence, a mental balm – something like a good armchair in which one rests from physical fatigue.” Matisse died in 1954, after a long life of creating paintings, prints, and sculpture.

Though Matisse had been trained in an academic setting, he came to herald a reduction and simplicity of line and radiant color so quintessentially seen in Jazz. He was a natural teacher, one who indelibly altered the course of Modern Art for generations to come.

Galerie d’Orsay ended 2006 with a bang featuring a month-long exhibition, “Picasso: Master Innova-tor.” The event coincided with important Picasso exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney. The gallery celebrated the great 20th-century Master as an unparalleled and passionate printmaker. In addition, the collection boasted many of the works also on display at the Met and from the Suite Vollard – Picasso’s crowning achievement in the print medium.

Galerie d’Orsay’s comprehensive collection of original, hand-signed linocuts, lithographs and etch-ings included works from every decade of Picasso’s artistic career. Going to great lengths, Ms. Hirsh-berg secured strong examples of Picasso’s genius from each innovative period. The collection was an insightful and visually breathtaking chronicle of the artist who would become one of the most recognized in history. In addition, d’Orsay curator, Christopher Kelley took collectors on an incred-ible journey discussing the innovative techniques in each of the significant and rare works in the featured collection. Pablo Picasso was a Spanish painter, draughtsman, and sculptor who lived most of his adult life in France. He is best known for co-founding the Cubist movement and for the wide variety of styles embodied in his work. His works are found in almost every major museum around the world.

Picasso has astonished the ablest printmakers time and time again. It is not only that he mastered the difficulties of new techniques with playful ease; he went on to obtain results that had previously been deemed impossible. Nowhere is this clearer than in the awe-inspiring body of Picasso’s graphic art, in which legendary powers as draftsman unite with unsurpassed mastery of the media – in an astound-ing range of styles, registers and affects. It has been said that Picasso, a magician, could infuse even the simplest line with the impress of genius. Taken all together, Picasso stands as the greatest artist since the High Renaissance, some 500 years past.

A decade of decadence, the art of the Belle Époque was the focus of a fabulously wistful exhibition in 2007. This explosive period marked the greatest transformation from traditional to modern. The Industrial Revolution surged as Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, the bicycle appeared in Paris, and the Lumiere brothers made the first short film. And, along with an expanding economy, there was an influx of people to urban areas, and an increase in free time. Artists captured the spectacle of the can-can girls, the romance of the city and the ease that manufactured goods brought to everyday life. Heralded artists captured this seismic shift – Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, Jules Cheret, Alphonse Mucha, James Tissot, Manuel Robbe, and more.

The power of images in advertising suddenly became obvious and the emblematic images were pasted across the buildings, streets, and kiosks of Paris. These brilliant posters turned artists like Toulouse-Lautrec into overnight successes.

Galerie d’Orsay mirrored the streets of late 19th Century Paris - a vibrant make-shift gallery of art showcasing the glittering decadence and material culture of “The Beautiful Era.” Galerie d’Orsay glowed with the most desirable of the brightly colored original posters of the period. Works included the most recognized by the greatest of these artists – Toulouse-Lautrec. Iconic posters such as, “Mou-lin Rouge, La Goulue,” “La Troupe de Mademoiselle Eglantine,” and “Divan Japonaise.” The collec-tion also included large-scale posters by Jules Cheret who significantly advanced color lithography of the time. Les Coulisses de l’Opera au Musée Grévin of monumental scale added to the whimsical and joyful atmosphere of the festive exhibition.

In 2008, Galerie d’Orsay brightened the dark gray winter days with the Opening of “Inspirational Hue: Color Field Painting and Printmaking.” The exhibition introduced collectors to the new-est Contemporary Master in their collection – Helen Frankenthaler – post-painterly abstraction painter and one of the most significant American artists of the XXth century. Frankenthaler pio-neered “soak stain” painting, in which she poured turpentine-thinned paint onto canvas, producing luminous color washes that appeared to merge with the canvas. She also brought an unprecedented innovation and experimentation to her editions, often incorporating multiple methods of print-making into one composition including woodcut, lithography and various styles of etching.

Frankenthaler’s works have been exhibited in the most prestigious institutions and hang as part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., Tate Modern, London and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston to name a few.

Helen Frankenthaler was also the founder and giant of the Color Field School of painting. One of her prominent students is Elizabeth Ahern. In her artworks Ahern seeks to capture the essence of nature through her use of color and light. Her unique technique of “soak staining” is quite unlike so many of her contemporaries. Resting her canvases flat on the ground and pouring layers and layers of water based paint until her brilliant colors soak and saturate her untreated canvases, she creates an unforgettable sensual, delicate mood. Ahern says, “Painting for me is as essential as breathing, a necessity and a delight… My paintings come from a compelling desire to shape the ab-stracted memory of landscape, in terms of the spirit of the place and my relationship with nature.” In 2015 Elizabeth Ahern was honored to place her works in the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon, Portugal and is part of the permanent collection at the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, MA.

“Capturing the Light” in 2009 was an exquisite look at the influential precursor artists to the Impres-sionists – The Barbizon School. These artists such as Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Charles-Francois Daubingny, Theodore Rousseau, Leon-Augustin L’hermitte, and Diaz de la Pena broke from expected tradition and brought the landscape to the primary focus of their composition. They would serve as an essential and significant bridge from that of realism, paving the way for Impressionism to come. Art-ists like Monet, Pissarro, and Renoir would become students and greatly influenced by the historically significant group of 19th century artists. Although not the gallery’s first Barbizon event, the 2009 col-lection featured several of the most important pieces in the gallery’s 19th century collection including one of the most beautiful museum caliber Lhermitte oils, “Les Glaneuses”; and a rich, amber-filled sky original oil by Corot, “Souvenir d’Italie, Soleil Couchant.”

In order to gain acceptance in the French Salon, academic painters of the 18th and early 19th century were repeatedly depicting historical or mythological themes, or imaginary landscapes of ancient Greece or Rome. But the Barbizon School rebelled by simply painting landscapes of their own French coun-tryside, just as they saw it. Characteristic of their artistic methods was taking their sketch books outside and capturing fleeting moments of beauty directly from nature. Though the Barbizon painters did suf-fer persecution in their earliest efforts, their work quickly gained in popularity and influence.

Samir Sammoun excelled in his 2010 exhibition hosted by Galerie d’Orsay, “Reawakening the Con-temporary Landscape.” The collection included iconic subjects to his oeuvre such as the 200+ year old of his home in Lebanon and rich autumnal scenes. In addition, Sammoun honored d’Orsay with masterful paintings of historic and romantic Boston landmarks such as Newbury Street, Park Square, and the Public Garden. Also included in the exhibition were original paintings from Sammoun’s heralded solo exhibition at the Plattsbugh Museum of Art in New York. Sammoun was honored by the Champlain Quadricentenial Commission by his selection as the official art-ist to commemorate the 400th anniversary celebration of Samuel de Champlain’s voyage. Due to the exhibit’s success, two of Sammoun’s works now proudly call home the State of New York’s Governor’s Mansion in Albany.

Sammoun has also supported the gallery’s charitable efforts with generous donations of original oils to the March of Dimes and Medical Missions for Children. His works have beeen selected by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston for its annual fundraiser Give the Arts a Chance.

Samir Sammoun is a Lebanese impressionist painter who currently lives in Montreal. A great colorist by nature, Samir possesses a rich palette that features more than 30 tones, providing the necessary foundation for his soft point and long-handled brushwork. Known worldwide for his signature rhythmic brushstroke and vast palette, Sammoun celebrates the distinctive color and light of each season through his sculptural oils of enchanting and tranquil landscapes. Spring in Boston’s Public Garden, Summer in Tuscany, Fall and Winter throughout North America, Sam-moun’s works vividly capture moments of beauty. They evoke a true sensory experience. As stated by Victor Bennet Forbes, Editor-in-Chief, Fine Art Magazine, New York, “The best of van Gogh - the pearl of great price - lives on in Sammoun who seeks to capture his unique ability to convey the infinite depths and heights of emotion, filtered through the fiery passion of his paintings.”

Galerie d’Orsay’s exhibition included rare and significant work inspired by Circus-themed masterworks including Marc Chagall’s Le Cirque and early works from Pablo Picasso’s Saltimbanques. Underscor-ing the exciting exhibition was Galerie d’Orsay’s partnership with the award-winning Bruce Museum (Greenwich, CT) as they presented their latest exhibition “Circus! Art and Science Under the Big Top.” The museum specifically contacted d’Orsay due to their reputation for high-caliber collections. Several master works were loaned from the gallery’s own collection, as well as signature Circus works in the private collections of Galerie d’Orsay collectors. The exhibition shot into center ring as an event not to be missed.

Tolla Inbar, was born in Germany in 1958. After attending school in Stuttgart, where she concen-trated on ceramics and sculpture, she immigrated to Israel. While passionately pursuing her interests in making art, and participating in both group and solo exhibitions throughout Israel and Europe, Tolla earned a B.A. in both psychology and sociology from Tel Aviv University, an academic pursuit that has greatly led to pursuit and study of modern art. Over the years, Tolla’s art has evolved from realistic and figurative to more expressive and semi-abstract forms. Using the ancient method of bronze casting, Tolla’s work embodies universal questions regarding the reasons for living and the complexity of the universe. The suggestion of movement is strikingly present in these inanimate works. Tolla uses the metaphor of climbing on to various external props to express this. The “souls” in these sculpture use stairs, ladders and ropes to fulfill ambitions and aspirations.

Marc Chagall; Daphnis & Chloe

2013

2013 was marked by an exhibition of a stunning color lithograph series by Marc Chagall - Daphnis and Chloe. The suite is based on the eponymous ancient Greek fable, which tells the story of a couple falling in love. Each were born into noble families, but orphaned and raised by a goatherd, the two lovers undergo numerous hardships and trials on the way to their happiness, encouraged by nymphs and gods.

The suite was commissioned to Chagall by a prominent art critic and publisher Teriade in 1956. The eternal story of the overwhelming power of true love unfolding in an idyllic pastoral setting of the Isle of Lesbos inspired Chagall: he spent five years of his life, from 1956 to 1961, creating the series and undertook several trips to Greece to breathe in its air and absorb the atmosphere of the country. The suite also coincided with the start of a happy period of his life – at that time Chagall married his second wife Valentina Brodsky. The visual narration of the classic tale, featuring vibrant colors and exquisite compositions, became a masterpiece on its own. In fact, it is one of the most important graphic series Chagall has ever produced.

Chagall’s career as a printmaker started in Berlin in 1922. At that time he was already an established artist, but new to graphic techniques. His early lithographs were entirely black and white. In 1923 Chagall settled in Paris, where he met Ambroise Vollard – a legendary art dealer, who was to be-come Chagall’s dealer for the next 15 years. However vigorous and original, Chagall’s lithographs lacked color, which became the main means of expression in his later works. Chagall’s first venture into color lithography was made possible in New York, where color printing was a relatively new medium, but only after his return to Paris, with its rich tradition of color printing and under the tutelage of distinguished Parisian printers, Chagall eventually found his signature style in color lithography, which became his favored art medium. Over the next 35 years he created over 1,000 lithographs.

Daphnis and Chloe became a true gem in Chagall’s legacy as a printmaker. Works from this suite can be found in some of the most prominent museums - The Brooklyn Museum, the State Hermit-age Museum, Harvard Art Museums, Art Institute of Chicago - and important private collections around the world.

Our 2014 exhibition featured works by Canadian contemporary abstract artist Richard Roblin. Richard developed a passion for drawing as a young boy wandering in the woods by his family home in South-ern Ontario. He was mesmerized by nature, which became his main source of inspiration. Although at the very beginning of his artistic journey he was striving for realistic representation of landscapes, soon he discovered the language of abstraction, expressing his unique way of seeing in his paintings.

His art was largely influenced by his elder brother and journeys throughout the Orient and India. 1980s became a turning point in his artistic path: during his stay on a yoga retreat in India, he discovered the nature of the primary elements of form – the point, the triangle, the square and the circle - which became the pivotal elements of his works ever since. It is through primary forms and exuberant colors that he expresses his fascination with all things inspiring him: the picturesque sites of Canada, stately buildings of Paris, oriental aesthetics of Japan, idyllic beauty of western Massachussets. Richard cre-ates his bold paintings solely using the palette knife to sculpt vibrant colors into “topographies”.

Roblin’s pioneering painting techniques and unique artistic vision received early recognition and ac-knowledgement: when he was 21 his paintings were purchased by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. His passion for creativity goes beyond painting, extending to the realms of architecture, design and sculpture. Roblin’s work has been exhibited worldwide in museums including the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

“Spanish Masters” in 2014 celebrated art of Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro. Besides being three of the greatest artists of all time and important contributors to the development of Modern art, they all grew up in the Catalan region of Spain, with its scenic landscapes. Mediter-ranean light, rich cultural heritage and authentic traditions have been inspiring artists for centuries.

By the late XIXth century, Spain transformed itself into one of the most dynamic centers of modern art in the world laying the foundation for the coming cultural revival throughout Europe. The northern cities of Barcelona and Catalonia flourished as key outposts for the avant-garde and experimental art of time. Legendary artists - Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro and Salvador Dali - emerged from the country’s milieu to become some of the most instrumental masters of 20th century art.

This outstanding 2015 Galerie D’Orsay exhibition sought to explore the art and relationship be-tween two titans of 20th century art – Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. For over 50 years, they maintained a fervent artistic rivalry. Their relationship, which could be called “dialogue” as much as “rivalry”, enabled both artists to become innovators of their time, and it is difficult to speak of one without addressing the other’s influence. Despite being “different as the North and South Poles”, as Matisse noted, they shared interest in mythology, human figure and technical innovations in the linocut medium. Both were celebrated for their representations of women, illustrated books and defied academic training. Many of their works are considered to be a response to other’s work, and some actually had the same title.

Their dialogue continued even after Matisse’s death: Picasso drew his idea of the Orient, he has never been to, from Matisse’s odalisques and continued to pay homage to Matisse’s legacy creating a series of 15 variations on Delacroix’s Women of Algiers. The exhibition “Picasso and Matisse: Revolutionary Rivals” at Galerie d’Orsay celebrated works that highlight their shared interests and their astounding impact on each other’s work and the modernist art movement.

In 2014 Galerie d’Orsay was pleased to debut works by contemporary American plein air artist Kathy Buist. Having grown up on a farm in rural Michigan, the artist seeks to convey the majestic power of nature – the ever-changing color of the sky, light, breath of wind, capturing the momentary spirit of the landscape. In her abstract landscapes, she utilizes organic technical elements which enhance the natural qualities of her work. Kathy works in a studio near the ocean, with wide windows, letting the ocean breeze move mineral spirits around each camvas. Nature not only inspires and influences Kathy’s work, but also becomes an important medium for her paintings – she crushes shells and sand, working them directly into her paints. Visual energy shows through her ethereal paintings, characterized by rich brush strokes and a bold use of color.

Kathy’s work has won praise from The New York Times and has been featured in numerous museum exhibitions throughout the country. Her paintings are part of prestigious museums and private collec-tions internationally and she also has the distinct honor of being part of Who’s Who in American Art.

In 2015 Galerie d’Orsay showed Buist’s new paintings together with sculptures by Richard Erdman in the framework of “Elements in Motion” exhibition. The two artists were paired together for their elemental aesthetic and transcendental nature of their works.

Like Buist, Richard Erdman shows reverence for nature in his works: his sculptures are expressions of his love of mountains, forests and stone quarries in his childhood in rural Vermont. After his appren-ticeship with Italian master stonecutters, he established a studio in Carrara – the world’s finest source of stone – and embarked on a lifelong quest to expose the hidden wonders and of each new creation. The artist says that the qualities of material he uses – marble, bronze, steel – “reflect the elements of nature”. Whether working in stone or bronze, his creative process is a veritable conversation with the medium, suggesting form and essence, while listening to and feeling the response.

Erdman’s work has been shown in more than 140 solo and group exhibitions throughout North Amer-ica, Europe and Asia. He has executed over 100 commissioned works museums, public, and corporate collections. His monumental sculpture Passage commissioned by Pepsi Co is the largest sculpture in the world carved from a single block of travertine.

2015Alexander Calder,

In 2015 Galerie d’Orsay debuted works by the celebrated American abstract artist Alexander Calder (1898-1976). A revolutionary sculptor, painter, printmaker, Calder produced a stunning body of work, which became subject of numerous museum exhibitions and many permanent collections across the world. We are very excited to offer our clients lithographs which have never been framed and exposed to the light before.

Alexander Calder, whose illustrious career spanned much of the 20th century, ranks as one of the most influential artists of the last 100 years. Born in 1898 to a family of celebrated and classically trained artists, Calder utilized his innovative genius to profoundly change the course of modern art. He began by developing a new method of sculpting by bending and twisting wire - essentially ‘’drawing’’ three-dimensional figures in space. He is renowned for the invention of the mobile, whose suspended, abstract elements move and balance in changing harmony. Calder worked in a time of artistic upheaval, yet chose to embrace a more lighthearted approach to his art. His impressive output of paintings, lithographs, and sculpture brought with it a humor and sense of play that ignored the formal structure of what art could be. His first New York exhibition was in 1928 and was followed by major shows in Paris and Berlin. Calder quickly gained international recognition for his work in abstraction, and in 1932 exhibited his first moving sculpture in an exhibition organized by Marcel Duchamp (who coined the word ‘’mobile”). From the 40’s on, Calder focused not only on large-scale sculptures, but on an impres-sive oeuvre of paintings and prints that exhibit the same sense of buoyancy and wit. His shapes and colors, along with bold, unbroken lines, were instantly recognizable for their dynamic sense of movement. The artist enjoyed great success during his long and prolific career and passed away just a few weeks after the opening of a retrospective at the Whitney Museum. His work is now featured in prominent museum and private collections worldwide.

Over the last 15 years, Galerie d’Orsay has built a strong reputation as an avid supporter of the arts and charitable efforts. Beginning in 2000 with an auction of an original Rembrandt etching to benefit the Isabella Stuart Gardner Museum, Galerie d’Orsay has raised significant funds and invested great efforts with both auction and financial contributions. Each year the gallery solidifies their strong-standing commitment with these organizations:

• In 2004 the gallery participated in “Seconding the First: A Celebration of the First Amendment” benefit gala, committing a portion of proceeds from art acquisitions as a donation to The Creative Coalition.

• In 2006 Galerie d’Orsay helped to bring both local and international artists together to create origi-nal works of art starting from unfinished violins, hosted a preview exhibition and assisted with the evening’s auction in the framework of Boston’s first Visual Violins, led by the Longwood Symphony Orchestra. The $100,000 that was raised went to support nine cancer care hospitals in the Boston area.

• In 2009 Galerie d’Orsay celebrated the centennial anniversary of the legendary Serge Diaghilev’s Bal-lets Russes ballet company by hosting an exclusive exhibition of works by Monegasque master artist Claude Gauthier, under the patronage of His Serene Highness Albert II, Sovereign Prince of Monaco.

• In May 2013 Galerie d’Orsay played host to Lions Leap – The Art of Giving event by Boston’s Lion of Judah. The Lion of Judah symbolizes a woman’s dedication to the time-honored tradition of tzedakah (charity) and is a reminder that each woman can make a difference in the world. A dinner and a conversation with Sallie Hirshberg, featuring her insight into Daphnis & Chloe Suite by a great 20th Century master Marc Chagall, which was on view at the gallery, celebrated Lion of Judah’s charity accomplishments.

• Galerie d’Orsay also hosted an event for She Gives – private foundation, connecting donors to nonprofits around Greater Boston. The gallery was honored to welcome the dynamic and com-mitted group of women who pioneered a new model of philanthropy and raise substantial sums of money for non-profit organizations with social missions.

• In 2014 Galerie d’Orsay was thrilled to host the Medical Missions for Children charity event. For over 24 years MMFC has been giv-ing hope for children around the globe, providing surgeries free of charge to those, who would otherwise never have access to this care. Galerie d’Orsay and contemporary impressionist painter Samir Sammoun donated a portion of all proceeds from Sam-moun’s latest exhibition at Galerie d’Orsay - Travels and Seasons, to MMFC.

Galerie d’Orsay is proud to support local artists as part of partnership with WGBH - public broadcaster and producer of PBS content for TV and the Web. In Summer 2015 the gallery participated in Summer Arts Walk along Newbury Street in in the Back Bay, exhibiting works by three of the local artists and donating a work of art by one of its artists – Kathy Buist. Arts Walk attendees had a chance to enjoy hors d’oeuvres, live music and art demonstration and to purchase select donated pieces to support WGBH and its commitment to educational cultural enrichment programs.

Bruno Zupan at the MFA

In April 2015 Bruno Zupan was honored to participate in the Art in Bloom Festival at the Mu-seum of Fine Arts, as he created a new work of art in MFA’s Shapiro Family Courtyard in just one day. Bruno was drawing inspiration from a floral arrangement, hand-crafted by New England garden clubs and professional designers, which in its turn was inspired by “The Great Wave” print by a distinguished Japanese 18th century artist Katsushika Hokusai. The artist started painting from blank canvas in the morning to present his inspiring masterpiece wet to the admiring public just 7 hours later. The bouquet painting was the center piece of “Zupan and Zupan” Exhibition Opening on the following night in Gallery d’Orsay. The display featured new works by Bruno Zupan and his daughter – working artist – Natasha Zupan.

In July 2015 Gallery d’Orsay made its debut at Art Southamptons – a highly acclaimed curated interna-tional art fair, presented by Art Miami. Thousands of contemporary art lovers and collectors from around the world had a chance to enjoy select works from the gallery’s collection, including new works by paint-ers Richard Roblin and Kathy Buist, and sculpture by Richard Erdman. The beautiful world renowned grounds of Nova’s Ark Project in Southampton became a perfect backdrop for the artworks of some of the foremost contemporary artists.

2015: introducing...

Peter DiepenbrockPeter Diepenbrock is a contemporary kinetic artist, renowned for his innovative monumental works for public and private spac-es as well as sculpted paintings. He uses steel, copper, bronze, aluminum to create his distinct skeletal structures, exploring the creation of form and movement. “I am developing a certain appreciation for the metaphoric potential of ‘organic geometry’. I am seeing ‘form’ as a frozen moment, a snapshot of what is, in fact, in constant motion. Any one of these forms can be seen as fragments of a much larger dynamic...”says Diepenbrock. Diepenbrock obtained both a bachelor of Fine Arts and a bachelor of Industrial Design from the Rhode Island School of Design. He was commissioned to create the Rhode Island State Memorial to the victims of September 11, 2001, and has had numerous other significant public commissions.

Kerry Brooks-SimmonKerry Brooks-Simmons (American, b.1976) passion for art led her to study painting at the Academy of Fine Art in Kiev, Ukraine, the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, Russia and New York Academy of Art, where she was able to enrich her work through a rigorous study of anatomy and classical techniques. Kerry has been working as a fine artist since 2003. She works in a variety of media and techniques, including graphite, colored pencil, charcoal and oil remaining committed to the long-standing tradition of tightly controlled draftsmanship and technical proficiency. Her work has been displayed on numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the U.S. and is collected internationally. Kerry lives and works in New York City.
