It’s Been A Fun Ride – 50 Years with Charolais! We Were Adventurous! We Were Young!

We Were Looking For That Perfect Breed Of Cattle!

We Found It! CHAROLAIS!

What Breed of Cattle to Choose? – In 1958 Robert and I began exploring and studying different breeds of regis-tered cattle. At that time we were running commercial cattle but desired to raise and breed a higher quality of livestock. We explored Santa Gertrudis, Hereford and Brahman but what really sparked our interest was the new and upcoming breed of Charolais and Charbray cattle.

The Decision Was Made – Even in its infancy the Charo-lais Breed of cattle looked very attractive to us. In 1959 Jernigans Double R Charolais Ranch was established by us along with our three children, Bob, Judy and Suzette. The hunt was on and the search began with looking up and visiting Charolais breeders in our area. At this time there were very few Purebred Charolais (cattle bred-up crossed with American Breeds) available and very few Fullblood Charolais that originated from the first import of pure Fullblood Charolais from Mexico in the ’30’s.

The Purchase Of Our First Charbray Cattle – Being an active member in the East Texas Farm and Ranch Club of Smith County Robert become acquainted with an Overton, Texas Charbray breeder, Walker Wilson. In fact we purchased our first set of Charbray heifers from the Walker Wilson Ranch. As we entered into the world of Charolais, Walker and Potty, our neighbors, became our best friends and confidantes.

The First Big Purchase We Made – The first Charolais sale we attended was in San Antonio. Our goal that day was to purchase one of the few Purebred Charolais bulls that were available. We made that purchase, the one-year-old Purebred bull, “Pan Gil, Jr.” from Gilmer Morris’ large Pan Gil Ranch in west Texas. Robert had told his banker that he wanted to buy a bull at the sale and it would probably cost around $1,500. Robert kept bidding until the auctioneer said “sold” for $2,000. When he went back to see his Tyler banker, the banker said “Robert don’t tell anyone I loaned you $2,000 to buy a Charolais bull, I will be the laughing stock of this town!”

Jernigans Charolais Sales Management Is Established – Other than breeding Charolais, we established our sales management business and managed Charolais sales all over the southwest from the 1960’s to the 1980’s. What really vaulted us into the “big time” of the sales manage-

ment business was securing the bid on managing the “First Nelson Bunker Hunt Sale”. One of our greatest accomplishments was the famous “Nelson Bunker Hunt 4-Day Charolais Sale”. When the auctioneer’s gavel made the final bang just over One Million Dollars of Charolais had sold each day. Needless to say this FOUR MILLION DOLLAR SALE set a record unsurpassed to this day. Jernigan Charolais Sales Management set many records throughout the years.

The Bluebonnet Charolais Breeders Association – The role the Bluebonnet Charolais Breeders Association played in our lives led to our entering into the Charolais Sales Management business. Robert came home from the first organizational meeting of the Bluebonnet Charolais and Charbray Breeders Association (Later the Charbray was taken out of the name) and said he was elected as the Secretary-Treasurer and they were planning a sale. The first “Bluebonnet Charolais Show Window Sale” was held in Corsicana, Texas in February of 1962. We did the cata-log, the advertising and handled the sale. Not ever doing a sale before, this was a total new experience for us. It was a “barn burner” sale. The turn-out for the sale that day filled the sale barn to capacity and breeders were out on the catwalk behind the auctioneer block turning in their bids. Hayes Walker, owner of the Charolais Banner, came up to Robert after the sale and asked him how it felt to be a successful sales manager. That February day began the establishment of Jernigans Charolais Sales Management.

Texas Charolais Breeders Association – Robert was instrumental in the founding of the Texas Charolais Breeders Association and served on the board of direc-tors. We managed the first great “Sale of Sales” held at the Houston Livestock Show in February 1966. This was the “First Breeder Sale” ever held in the USA. Every animal sold in that sale was bred by the consignor and carried the Breeder’s brand. This sale put the focus on Charolais in Texas, the birthplace of the breed in the USA.

On The Cover – Robert and Modena Jernigan and Jim and Anetta Price of Oklahoma City shown on the cover when they partnered up to purchase Le Seuer, Jr., the $52,000 two and one-half month old bull calf. Le Seuer, Jr. was the World Futurity Champion and was purchased in the World Charolais Sale in Calgary, Alberta, Cananda in July 1967.

What Are Fullblood Charolais Cattle?

Fullblood Charolais cattle are the pure strand of the

Charolais breed that originated in France. Before the 1930’s a Charolais animal was virtually unknown in the USA. In the mid to late ‘30s the first Fullblood Charolais cattle were introduced into this country.

The beef cattle in America prior to that time were mostly Hereford, Brahman, Angus, Shorthorn, Longhorn, etc. These breeds had been here a long time and were usually referred to as the American Breeds.

The Charolais cattle in the USA today are either Fullblood Charolais or Purebred Charolais. The Purebred Charolais are bred up animals crossed with other American Breeds until they reach the 31/32 status and then are given the designation of Purebred Charolais. The bloodlines of the Fullblood Charolais and their offspring have been kept in the pure status originating from France.

The famous King Ranch, the largest ranch in Texas with vast land holding in south Texas, became interested in the Charolais breed sometime in the early to mid ‘30s. King Ranch is noted for the creation of the Santa Gertrudis breed by crossing Shorthorn and Brahman cattle. They may have entertained the thought of working the Charolais blood into their newly created breed. For whatever reason, King Ranch was the first to import the Fullblood Charolais bloodlines into the USA. In June of 1936 they imported two Fullblood bulls, Neptune and Ortolan, from the Jean Pugibet herd of Mexico. They crossed these two fullblood Charolais bulls on their cattle and produced half blood animals.

Some time in the late 30’s another group of men imported approximately 30 head of Fullblood Charolais from the Pugibet herd whose bloodlines had been kept pure from the original cattle they imported from France. These men became known as the “Pioneer Breeders of Charolais in the U.S.A.”

These Pioneer Breeders were: Fred Turner, Harl Thomas, Cap Yates, Pete Frost, M. G. Michaelis, all of Texas along with Palley Lawton of Louisiana. These breeders kept the original Fullblood cows and their off-spring pure. They crossed the Fullblood bulls on cattle already in this country leading to an upgrading process.

A Fullblood Charolais bull crossed with an American breed cow produced a 1/2 blood Charolais-cross animal. The next crosses became 3/4, 7/8, 15/16 and 31/32 percentages of Charolais blood. The crosses up to the 15/16 level were eligible for registration but only the 31/32 animals were given the designation of Purebred Charolais but could never be a Fullblood Charolais.

Due to the upgrading process the Charolais Purebreds were able to multiply faster and therefore the majority of Charolais today are of Purebred status. There are a limited number of herds in the U.S.A. that have maintained an all Fullblood Charolais herd.

Until the ‘60s all Charolais in Mexico, the United States and Canada had originated from the original Pugibet herd of Mexico. This changed rapidly in the mid ‘60s when the Canadian government, in agreement with France, allowed the importation of Fullblood Charolais from France into Canada.

At this time the United States government did not allow any importation of cattle from France therefore the American breeders were forced to go to Canada to purchase Fullblood Charolais. Since the infusion of this new Charolais blood was so desperately needed, the Americans stormed Canada in search of the new blood-lines. They paid a premium for these animals leading to a revival of the Charolais breed in America.

Years later the US government allowed direct shipment of Fullblood Charolais from France to America. However, due to the high cost of the Canadian imports and the expense involved in direct imports from France to America there are a limited number of Fullblood Charolais in this country today.

In this sale you have an opportunity to secure some of the best of the Fullblood Charolais breed for a fraction of the cost of direct imports from France or the higher priced embryo transplants. You may desire to purchase a Fullblood bull and/or a few Fullblood females to inject new bloodlines into your present herd. You may desire to establish and maintain a small herd of Fullblood Charolais within your present Purebred herd. Or perhaps you are considering establishing a Charolais herd; here is the place to acquire a firm foundation of Fullblood Charolais to build your herd from the bottom up.

The Golden Anniversary Sale is loaded with high quality Fullblood Charolais cattle; the only sale held this year in the USA with this many great Fullblood Charolais to make your selections from. We welcome you to come to Tyler on Saturday, November 6, 2010. You will be pleased with the quality of cattle and the hospitalityfrom the Jernigans of Tyler, the Ludekes, the Grecos, the Hammonds, the Addkisons and the Jernigans of Tennessee.

Guest Consignors to Golden Anniversary Sale Addkison Charolais FarmWe are located in Louisville, Mississippi and have been in the Charolais cattle business since 1983. We strive to raise the finest Charolais using a combination of polled Fullblood and horned Fullblood. We produce females that milk well and bulls with moderate frame and bone that work in any herd. Upon my entry into Charolais one of my best friends and mentor was fellow Mississippian, the late Richard Ware. If there ever was a true supporter of the Charolais cattle it was Richard. He lived and breathed Charolais. I purchased some of my original cattle from Richard and we pretty much followed the same breeding programs. Richard and I were among the first to use the imported semen from the polled Brazilian bulls. Our bull market being in Mississippi and the southeast; the majority of our customers prefer the polled Charolais to cross on commercial cows. We at Addkison Charolais Farm are constantly trying to improve our herd by introducing new bloodlines into our breeding program. We purchased the herd bull, Hamm Taskmaster 13P ET, a son of Paladin and out of a Till daughter from Mogo Charolais and used him heavily in our herd. Recently we have introduced the Champion bull Hamm Mogo U23 into our breeding program. This is the show bull owned and promoted jointly by Mogo Charo-lais and Bar J Charolais. We are bringing two top pairs and one bred heifer to the Golden Anniversary Sale. The cows are bred back to Hamm Taskmaster 13P ET and the heifer is bred to Hamm Mogo U23.

Aristo Charolais FarmsWe are a family operation located in Topeka Kansas. The owners are: Betty, Austin, Tony and Tom Greco. Austin and Tony Greco are the managers. We are the next generation of Charolais Breeders to re-establish the Aristo Charolais Farms. Our parents, Frank and Norma Jean, developed the first Aristo Charolais Farms. When they initially began seeking Charolais cattle to establish their herd they sought out the best bloodlines they could find. They purchased many of their cattle out of the top sales of the nation. As the years passed, they determined it was time to disperse. Robert and Modena Jernigan of Jernigans Charolais Sales Management conducted our parents’ very successful Dispersal Sale. Today we are back in Charolais establishing an all Fullblood Charolais Herd. We are breeding for calving ease, fertility, disposition, longevity (teat, udder, feet), and grass converters, in that order. We have acquired Fullblood Charolais from some of the leading herds in the nation, among them, Tom Jernigan’s, TWJ Charolais Farms. Also we have purchased embryos and semen from the most popular bloodlines in France, the homeland of Charolais. In this sale we are offering a FLUSH out of one of our top ET cows, a full sister to Pinay, one of the most popular bulls in France. We are also bringing a full brother to Pinay to the sale. We desire our debut back into Charolais circles to be the best our herd has to offer.

Guest Consignors to Golden Anniversary SaleBar J CharolaisWe are located on the Texas Gulf Coast in a semi-tropical environment. We operate with about 200 mother cows, approximately 150 are Fullblood and the remaining 50 or so are Purebred cows. Our environment is probably about as extreme as the United States has to offer and our cattle have to be able to travel and deal with the heat. Our foundation cows were obtained from Robert and Modena Jernigan, TWJ Charolais, Marti Charolais and Forrest Ingram’s Golden Rod Charolais in Cullman, Alabama. Bar J has a strategic partnership with Mogo Charo-lais in Florence, Alabama and together we market about a 150 bulls a year in Texas and across the Southeastern United States. Bar J and Mogo have out crossed these cattle with cattle imported from Canada. We have been very impressed with the overall quality of Canadian Fullblood cattle. Also, Canada requires DNA certification of all ancestors proving Fullblood lineage. We imported embryos from some of the finest Canadian Fullblood cows who were bred to bulls known to work well in our rough environment. We think our (BAR J and Mogo) herd sires represent some of the best Fullblood genetics available. Sons and daughters of all these bulls are currently being shown in the Bar J/Mogo show string. Bar J’s mission has been to blend the best Fullblood and Purebred genetics to provide the commercial cattleman with moderate sized, easy fleshing bulls that can thrive in any environment. BAR J – Herd SiresTWJ VAILLANT 724 is a son of Meillard who is out of the great French bull Invincible. His daughters are just starting to come into production and we are very pleased with what we see. His moderate size, overall smoothness and stylish look are being passed on to his progeny. If all his daughters milk as well as the first few, he will be the bull we hoped for.HAMM BRAMARD 12R is a son of Ali Baba Bramard and a flush mate of Hamm Charboneau 2N. This bull, like his brother Charboneau 2N at Mogo Charolais, is doing an excellent job of producing deep bodied, stylish broody females that possess the maternal traits we strive for. These two Ali Baba Bramard sons are his last known living sons and they are keeping a great bull’s genetics alive and well.

Mogo CharolaisWe are a Fullblood Charolais Ranch dedicated to the production of bulls for commercial cattlemen. We strive to produce the finest terminal sires possible. Bulls we produce are marketed in Florida, Texas and Alabama. We breed bulls for balance, flexibility and durability for use in rough terrain and extreme weather conditions. Mogo – Herd SiresHAMM MOGO U23 is a son of Hamm Charboneau 2N and is the best of what we produce at Mogo and Bar J. He was Reserve Grand Champion Bull at the 41st National Show in Denver, Grand or Reserve at Fort Worth, Houston, American Royal, Missouri State Fair, Tulsa State Fair and Kansas State Fair. Stan Cross says U23 is the most outstanding Charolais bull he has seen in 65 years of showing cattle. ¼ semen interest was sold at the World Charolais Congress, San Antonio to a group of Missouri breeders including Mike Kisner (Wild Indian Acres) and Rick Hale.HAMM CHARBONEAU 2N is a son of Ali Baba Bramard, known for ease of calving and good carcass yield. His progeny have slick hair, smooth gait, and great muscle structure. Earlier this year a son, Hamm Mogo U23, was named Grand Champion Bull at Houston, Texas and Reserve Grand Champion Bull at the 41st National Charolais Show in Denver.MOGO INTERNALTIONAL is a son of the great sire Eleuthera International. His progeny have very high wean-ing and yearling weights, excellent feet and frame, and high carcass yield. Semen is available at Bovine Elite on these Bar J / Mogo Herd Sires.

TWJ Charolais FarmWe entered the Charolais world in 1963 with the purchase of a Charolais Fullblood heifer from Dusty Dell Farm of Union City, Tennessee. Over the next decade we bought additional females and bulls and bred AI as much as we could to Fullblood bulls when they were available. We bought our next Fullblood in 1976 from Don Anderson of Waverly, Kentucky. From that point, we have bought females from Richard Ware, Ross Roberts, Larry Addki-son, OBBCO Ranch and the entire herd of Jerry and Jenny Melott of Nebraska. Linda and I plus our children and grandchildren now own nearly 200 Fullblood cattle. We have imported semen yearly from France since 1996 and embryos from France recently. We believe that much of our future breeding success must come from improving our EPD’s and DNA testing for superior cattle. Raising Charolais cattle is our only business.

116U is a Canadian ET bull bred by Roy Hertz, Calagary, Alberta. He is the son of the great sire and show bull, Cabotin, a direct import from France. No calves sired by Cabotin have been registered in the USA since 1971. His dam is a daughter of Till and a descendant of Sylvain. A flush-mate to 116U was used as a herd bull in one of the top herds in Canada. This bull is for sale only because Mogo plans to use their National Reserve Grand Champion Bull Hamm Mogo U23 heavily in their herd. This big strong bull is a son of Focus, the herd sire we have used extensively in our herd. Focus sires small calves that grow off well. He transmits his same great characteristics of conformation, bone, and thickness to his calves. ”112’s” dam, “279”, is one of the largest cows in our herd, with scale, bone and length. “279’s” dam and great dam were also big cows. She is sired by the “79” bull that has many daughters in our herd. His half sister on dam side sells as Lot 14.

This bull comes out of one of the strongest cows we have in the herd, “270”, an embryo cow. “270” and her half sister “64” are the only two cows left in the herd that are direct daughters of the old “695” cow, a large, impressive cow sired by Caleb. “120” is a son of the famous Abraham bull that was used so heavily in the Ankony herd. There were many top daughters by Abraham in this herd that were a strong influence in the Charolais breed. The entire Ankony herd, purchased by Bunker Hunt, produced many top individual out of the Abraham daughters.

This bull’s dam, “377” sells in the sale as Lot 11. She is a big frame cow, with lots of length, depth and bone. He has inherited the frame and scale of his dam as well as his sire, Classic. Classic sired small calves and we primarily used him on heifers. Classic was a large bull with good length and was very straight and correct. His calves grow off well and develop into good size animals. The bloodlines in this bull have been proven.

we debated long and hard on letting these two five-year-old cows and part of their family leave the Double r ranch. only because we are presenting our “50 year Debut” are you having a shot at our very best. These two cows are the “royals” of our herd. They each have a big, fancy focus heifer selling at their side. This sale is loaded with progeny from the family line of the old cow, ms rr Liza 583. Three more females selling from this line are: Lot 25, PH 454; Lot 39, PH 501; Lot 42 PH 506 and one bull, PH 117 selling as Lot 6.

The cows in this family are among the most prolific producers in our herd. both cows are AI’d; one to the r.o.E. Show champion, Eleuthera International and one to colmar, a full brother to Amour de Paris and then pasture exposed to focus.

robert loved this cow line. notice that “330” Lot 8, is a direct daughter of “780” and “312” Lot 9, is a granddaughter of “780.” Including these two cows, your have the opportunity to acquire a small family of females, numbering seven, to build a herd upon. “312,” “330” and the bred heifer, “454,” are in production with more coupons to clip.

This is the kind of continuity you can find in an old established charolais Herd such as ours. we have had a closed fullblood charolais cow herd for over 20 years with every female on the ranch being bred and raised by Double r ranch.

Maggie’s Angel 378 is coming with her second calf by Focus. She’s a medium size cow that will continue to grow. She is feminine, has excel-lent conformation and good bone. We do not have a lot of this cow’s bloodlines back to the old “615” cow in the herd, so this was another hard choice. Another jewel in the sale is her classy young daughter “489” selling as Lot 34. These are descendants of Maggie’s “306” cow which is still producing in the herd. These are the type we call “keepers” but we made an agonizing decision to open the gate and re-lease some of our favorites. “378’s” sire is George W Bush, on the sire side the El Replica breeding and his dam is the productive cow “583”.BW: 80 EPDs: 1.3 0.5 5 7 4 2.3 6

This four-year-old is bred by our herd sire “Pride of Texas” and will have her second calf. She is a very large cow, with a long body, thick, heavy bone, and excellent conformation. She comes from the milking line back to “810”, a descendant of the old “614” cow. An interesting story: Robert gave the four grandchildren each a cow and let them make their selection. Josh chose “614”. I told Josh he did not want that cow because she had gotten bred young and was small. Nothing I said deterred him. He had learned well from his grandfather, you see “614’s” dam “182” was the best milking cow on the ranch. Josh did not make a mistake, he choose a great cow that has produced many good animals and calved every year.

This young first-calf heifer is all she is suppose to be. Her grandam is the strong producing “564” cow. There are three other granddaugh-ters selling as Lots 12, 18, and 37. “564” represents the breeding of El Replica, Abraham and Jaguar. “421” is a daughter of our herd sire, Anchor. Look at the length on this heifer calf, a future brood cow for your herd that should be equal to her dam. This young cow has great size, length, height plus the bone and natural smooth muscling the Fullblood cattle are noted for.

This cow, “64”, was liken to the energizer bunny, she just keeps going and going, producing those calves. “428’s” sire is Anchor 300, a son of Dallas, back to the great imported Amour de Paris. This sale is loaded with young, productive females from six noted Fullblood breeders.

She has size, length, height, heavy bone, and exhibits the smooth muscling the Fullblood cattle are noted for. “438” is one of the best young heifers being offered in the sale. Her size comes from the long line of big cows in her pedigree, namely “264”, “844” and “559”. Her dam, Katie Grace “264”, is a very large cow with great size and volume. She produced an outstanding 2009 bull sired by Le Seuer, Jr. (pictured on the cover) that we will be using as a herd sire. “435”, an Anchor daughter, is a feminine heifer with a thin neck and the good conformation found in her dam, the top milk producer “235”. When “235” calves her milk flows in abundance to such an extent that she could raise two calves. Therefore her calves get off to a good start with weaning weights above average. It is assumed that her offspring will inherit this desirable trait. “235” is so gentle that Poncho can pet her in the open pasture.

They can’t get much better than this heifer! “455’s” grandam, the “578” cow, was held in high esteem by Robert. When you say Robert knew Charolais that is an understatement. When “578” was a heifer she broke her back leg. The vet said he could not help her. Robert brought her home and set her leg himself. It paid dividend’s, as she was a prolific breeder. Knowing this heifer’s credentials we would like to own a pasture full like her. Only because this is our “Golden Anniversary Sale” would we sell a heifer of her caliber. Mogo & Bar J purchased a full sister, “417,” at the Cattle Drive Sale. Our only consolation is that we still have the cow factory that produced these two heifers.BW: 85 EPDs: -4.3 2.1 4 6 3 -2.0 4

Another pretty heifer offered in this sale. Look at her picture, she has it all. But other than looks, she should inherit production from her dam side. She comes from the “72” cow that is a terrific producer. “72” is ten years old and has had eight calves. Having a good crop of heifer calves we are selling this one and still have four of her daughters in the herd. “72’s” dam “564” was a great producer also. Regular calvers and good producers are the ones that pay the bills.

The only Eleuthera International heifer in the sale. She is good! Her great grandam is a daughter of the “614” cow. Look at her picture, no need to elaborate, see for yourself. Robert was up in the Texas Pan-handle screening cattle for a sale and he saw Eleuthera, owned by Ross Robert and Troy Powell. Robert urged them to put him on the show circuit and before he left we owned 1/4 interest in him for $17,000.00. Needless to say I was not very happy to receive that call, but Robert knew his cattle – he went on to be an R.O.E. Champion.

Lot 40 – PH 502 heifer is loaded with class. She is thick, heavy boned with deep body. Her development is evidence of the type mother she has, the milk producing “235” cow.

Lot 41 – PH 505 is one of the crown jewels of the open heifers. She has class and style and and is a well-made heifer. She also goes back to the strong milking “614” cow.

Lot 42 – PH 506 is another one of the young open heifers in the sale. She has a long body, is straight and correct. Here again this heifer is a desendant from the old “583” cow.

Lot 43 – PH 507 is long, tall, trim and growthy heifer, sired by focus. Her dam is a direct daughter of the “64” cow. The potential is there to develop into a good cow.

One of the hard decisions to make on selecting cattle for the sale was selling this “497” heifer. Knowing the great milk production of her dam “299,” a daughter of “810” back to the old “614” cow, was what made it hard. But we desired to offer cattle that are worthy of your trip to East Texas! Her dam is a heavy milker and could easly raise two calves. We sold “299’s” first bull calf at one year of age for $2,000.00, he was that good.

This is a one of the select open heifers that could make a show heifer. She is a classic from the family line that you find at the front of the catalog; the two cows selling as lots 8 and 9 plus several other offspring in the sale. “501” is a descendant of the Ms RR Liza 583 as the “703” cow is a direct daughter. The “583” cow was not the biggest cow in the herd but she was one of the top producers that always raised a top calf. In these young cattle you get the fruit of Robert’s lifelong endeavor of developing a top Charolais herd.

TWJ Charolais Farm of Union City, Tennessee is bringing three pair to the sale. “14” is one of Tom’s favorite cows. She is a former show heifer with tremendous thickness and volume. She is an easy keeper, outstand-ing milker and easy breeder. She has been a “no problem” female all her life. She just recently delivered a good looking bull calf (BW 92) that should do well considering the milk his dam gives. This pair will be an asset to any herd.
