Sermon Date: Jan. 26 & 27, 2013 Sermon Title: Standing the Heat Sermon Text: Daniel 3

Compromise can sometimes seem like the language of our culture. While through time we may outgrow some temptations, we still have to deal with cultural norms and a moral line that continues to move further and further from truth. So, how do we stand up to a culture with no true standard? In this weeks study we’ll learn what it looks like to go against the grain, see the risks involved, and bear witness to how God can bless us when we are not afraid to stand for Him and remain firm with the truth we believe. Can you stand the heat?

Read Daniel 3

1. How would you define idolatry? How does it apply in the early stages of this story?

2. Can you share of a time when you were asked to do something that conflicted with your spiritual beliefs? What was the outcome? As Nebuchadnezzer’s servants, what do you think Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego should have done?

3. Re-read verses 16-18. What happened to the boys as they faced the fire? How was faith evident in their decision? And who is the fourth person that appears in the furnace?

4. Read Hebrews 11:1: How does this scripture define faith? How would you describe your faith?

1. What impressed you most about the Hebrew boys in this story? How

has it challenged you to trust God more?

2. When the Hebrew boys refused to compromise, they took the risk of being burned in the furnace. However, as they stood up for what they believed, others were able to see God at work in their lives. What potentially compromising circumstances have you faced lately? And how can this story help you deal with that situation differently? v.19-25

3. Re-read v.28-30. What changed in the heart of the King and how did

the Hebrew boys benefit? Will you ask God to give you the necessary courage to face your modern-day furnaces and trust His plan for your life? End by reading Jeremiah 29:11 together.
