Afghanistan- Armenian Defense Min-ister Seyran Ohanian (C) and his firstdeputy Davit Tonoyan (R) inspect Armen-ian troops in Afghanistan,

Armenia intends to keep a small mili-tary contingent in Afghanistan after the for-mal completion of NATO-led combatoperations there at the end of this year, FirstDeputy Defense Minister Davit Tonoyansaid on Tuesday.

NATO’s International Security Assis-tance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan is due toend its mission before January 2015. TheU.S.-led alliance will remain engaged in thewar-torn nation through a new multina-tional mission dubbed Resolute Support. Itwill concentrate on advising, training andassisting the Afghan army that is graduallytaking the lead in security operations.

main ISAF partner Germany that a politi-cal decision has been made and Armeniahas the capacity to continue assisting in sta-bilization efforts in Afghanistan after theend of the ISAF mission in December,”Tonoyan told the Mediamax news agency.

Armenia has kept around 130 soldierson the ground for the past few years. Theyhave served in northern Afghanistan underGerman command.

Today, Turkish ambassador to Azerbai-jan Ismail Alper Coskun was subjected to areal search at the Azerbaijani parliament.According to the Azerbaijani news portal"Haqqin.az" the ambassador arrived in Par-liament to attend the meeting of the Parlia-mentary Assembly of the TradeCommission of Turkic-speaking countries(TurcPA).

"The Security Service of the Parliamentdemanded that the ambassador showed thecontent of his pockets. The surprised am-bassador was explained that it is no longerallowed to enter the Parliament with suchphones as smartphones," writes the portal.

The diplomat was forced to leave hisphone under the protection of security serv-ice of the Parliament.

According to the article, after the intro-duction of new safety rules in the Azerbai-jani parliament deputies have already beensubjected to such inspections. "But this wasthe first time when vigilantes of the Speaker

Oktay Asadov searched a foreign diplo-mat," reads the article.

During the autumn session of the par-liament, journalists had recorded on theirsmartphones the MPs voting instead theothers. These records have been spreadthrough all media and called criticism onthe MPs behavior. After that, press secretaryof the Azerbaijani parliament AkifTevekkyuloglu announced a ban on bring-ing smartphones in to the legislative As-sembly.

Two elected members of the State ofHawaii's House of Representatives, RidaCabanilla (Dem - 41st District) and MarkTakai (Dem - 33rd District), traveled toAzerbaijan together in 2013 on an $8,000trip that was paid for by the Azerbaijanigovernment. They have since co-sponsoredanti-Armenian/anti-Artsakh legislationthat’s been set for a hearing on Wednesday,February 12, 2014.

Here are summaries of the two items oflegislation that Cabanilla and Takai are in-troducing before the Hawaii House of Rep-resentatives tomorrow, the first of which isgrossly offensive and inaccurate:

• House Resolution 13 recognizes the22nd anniversary of the Khojaly tragedywhich, according to the resolution, in-volved the slaughter of hundreds of inno-cent civilians in Azerbaijan in February1992.

• House Resolution 9 calls on theUnited States to strengthen its efforts to fa-cilitate a political settlement of the Arme-nia-Azerbaijan conflict.

Clearly showing a disinterest in con-ducting basic due diligence, these two statelawmakers are actually OK with sponsor-ing bills for which they have no idea of thehistorical accuracy?

The Aegis ships will operate in tandemwith land- and other air- and space-basedsystems to monitor for possible hostile mis-sile launches and then direct missiles to de-stroy them.

2013 marked a milestone anniversary:the 110th birthday of the great Armeniancomposer Aram Khachaturian. According to a new bill adopted by theGeorgian parliament, the mayor of an Ar-menian-populated city in Georgia can nowbe directly elected by the citizens, lending agreater voice to Georgia's Armenian com-munity.

Georgia's parliament yesterdayadopted in its third reading a new bill onlocal self-government bodies that, as con-veyed by Georgia's Armenian community,stipulates only those cities that are consid-ered regional centers will have self-govern-ing status.

Among those cities with self-governingstatus is Akhaltsikhe, the capital of the re-gion of Samtskhe-Javakheti, where the pop-ulation is comprised of 40% Armenians(16,879 people) and 28,473 Georgians.

Elif Şafak (born 25October 1971, Stras-bourg, France) is a Turk-ish author, columnist,speaker and academic.She holds a Masters de-gree in Gender andWomen's Studies and aPh.D. in Political Science."As Turkey's bestsellingfemale writer, Şafak is abrave champion of cos-mopolitanism, a sophisti-cated feminist, and anambitious novelist whoinfuses her magical-real-ist fiction with big, important ideas...". Shafak wrote her next novel in English.The Saint of Incipient Insanities was pub-lished by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Hersecond novel written in English is The Bas-tard of Istanbul, which was the bestsellingbook of 2006 in Turkey and was long listedfor the Orange prize. Integration not fusion,”has been the slogan of theArmenian diaspora sincebeing the target of genocideat the hands of the OttomanEmpire nearly a centuryago. But since the start ofthe Syrian conflict, the Ar-menian community in Syriahas felt increasingly patri-otic, despite the fact that thefighting has displaced thou-sands of them.

“I feel both envious andproud when I see the Syriandiplomatic delegation. Iwish I could get the chancein the future to defend my country with mywords and my mind. Our Syria deservesour utmost love, diligence, and sacrifice,”wrote Syrian-Armenian activist Kivork Al-masian, 27, commenting on the Geneva IItalks on his Facebook page.

In May 2011, Harut, 25, Kivork’sbrother, was kidnapped with his girlfriendby Liwaa al-Tawhid, which contacted hisfamily to demand a ransom of $40,000. Thefamily convinced the kidnappers to bringthe figure down to $12,000.

Kivork said, “The massacre we facetoday is similar to the one our ancestorssuffered at the hands of the Turks.”Harutand Kivork’s father went to the al-Dan re-gion in Idlib to pay the ransom and get hisson back. Three years into the Syrian crisis, Ar-menians of different denominations – Or-thodox, Catholic, and Evangelical – havereceived their “fair” share of suffering,murder, kidnapping, and displacement be-cause of the conflict, just like the rest of theSyrians.

But the Armenians also discovered thatSyria is their home rather than their “hostcountry.” In truth, the Turkish involvementin the Syrian war has reinforced this senti-ment. Kivork said, “The massacre we facetoday is similar to the one our ancestorssuffered at the hands of the Turks.”

Kivork said that “integration, not fu-sion” is a slogan that Armenians in theArab Levant have lived with for decades.However, he argued, “The war in Syria hasshown that this is not true, because myhome is Syria and my allegiance is to it.”

The number of Syrian Armenians be-fore the conflict was estimated to be 80,000,of whom up to 80 percent lived in Aleppo,10 percent in Damascus, and 10 percent inDeir al-Zour, Hassakeh, Qamishli, and al-Raqqa. The bloody events, especially inAleppo, forced them to flee to other areaswithin Syria including Damascus, Latakia,and Tartous, or to Lebanon and Armenia.

Since the outbreak of the war, the Ar-

menian Orthodox Patriarchate of Aleppohas been trying to continue its social andhumanitarian activities, such as caring fororphans, the elderly, and the poor. GerayrRissian, spokesperson for the Patriarchate,told Al-Akhbar, “The schools, universities,culture clubs, and charities are still operat-ing, albeit at a smaller pace.”

Rissian refused to characterize the Ar-menians’ exit from Syria as “immigration.”He said, “We do not think of it this way be-cause the majority have left temporarily,and will return as soon as the crisis is over.”He put the percentage of Armenians dis-placed at a quarter to a third of the totalnumber. Concerning the causes of theirflight, he said, “Many have lost their busi-nesses. Factories and warehouses in the in-dustrial area, al-Midan, al-Arqoub, andSheikh Maqsoud have been completelylooted.”

For her part, Maria has not left Damas-cus since the beginning of the conflict. Shestill teaches at a school in the Syrian capi-tal. She said, “I never felt that I had toleave.”

Meanwhile, like many other historicalchurches that have been ransacked by ex-tremist groups, three Armenian churcheshave been destroyed in Aleppo, Deir al-Zour, and al-Raqqa. Despite their relativelysmall numbers in Syria, Maria said, “ Ar-menians have suffered like all other com-munities in Syria. Many businesspeopleand industrialists lost their businesses, notto mention the martyrs, wounded, ab-ductees, and refugees.”

In the latter case, militants from the Is-lamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) set fireto the church and took down the cross fromthe top of the church tower, replacing itwith ISIS flags.

Syrian-Armenians like to emphasizetheir Syrian identity. They say that theyhave lived in Greater Syria since beforeChrist. True, their numbers increasedgreatly after the Armenian genocide, butArmenian convoys had always passedthrough Syria, including through areas likeDeir al-Zour and al-Raqqa.

In 1928 Joseph Karst published the re-sults of his studies which caused resonancein the scientific world. He presented morethan 300 Basque-Armenian lexical, phoneticand grammatical similiarites, including ashared systems of declension, conjugationsand others. Karst came into conclusion thatBasque and Armenian languages are two va-rieties of one linguistical type, which henamed Alarodian. Besides, Karst handled theethnography and the anthropology ofBasques and Armenians; new data andproofs shed light on this matter .

In 1993 Armenian centre of Yerevan stateuniversity founded Armenian-Basque inter-national scientific journal “Araks”, which isedited by armenologists and basqologistsfrom different countries of the world.

In Armenian– Araratyan Kingdom (“Urartian kindom”),the southeastern coast of the lake Van, whichwas the crandle of Armenian people, iscalled ’Khubushkia’ which means “valley ofusks” that is to say “valley of gold “. In me-dieval Armenian sources Khubushkia, “val-ley of usks” or ” golden valley” was renamedinto ‘Hayots dzor’ which means “Armenianvalley”. On the other hand, the Ushkianimountains are mentioned in “Urartian” in-scriptions on the northeastern coast of lakeUrmia. In the time of Strabo, the Ushkianimountains were already identified as ‘Ar-menian mountains’, but in Armenian sourcesthey are known as ‘Voskean’ -”golden”.

All these facts allow us to conclude thatfor our ancestors the notions “gold-miner”and “Armenian” were synonymous, whichis also evidenced by Basque legends.

In conclusion, there was a genetic study

done in different regions of Armenia, that de-tected that the characteristic genetic codeprevalent in Welsh, Basques and Irish, calledthe Atlantic Modal Haplotype, is also pres-ent in Armenian population of Syunik andArtsax. These are two Armenian provincespredominantly isolated in the mountains,which precluded genetic admixture withneighboring ethnic groups and nations». TheArmenian modal haplotype is also the modalR1b3 haplotype.

Ancient pieces that have been un-earthed since 1965 during excavations atthe ancient site of Ani, which is located be-tween the border of Armenia and the east-ern Turkish province of Kars, are beingdisplayed at the Kars Museum. The piecesdate back to at least 2,000 years ago.

Kars Museum Director Necmettin Alpsaid the ancient site of Ani was the firsttrade city from the Caucasus to the en-

trance of Anatolia and therefore it had in-ternational significance.

He said the pieces unearthed in Ani,one of the most important ancient sites inTurkey, were covering an area of 85hectares, adding, “Ani had a population of20,000 people and trade vas very activethere. Life continued in the ancient cityuntil the 15th century. During this time,mosques, churches, baths, palaces, struc-tures of civil architecture examples and cas-tles had been built within a five-kilometerlong city wall.”

Alp noted the whole ancient city was afirst-degree archaeological area and contin-ued, “Its vicinity was also declared as athird-degree archaeological area. Excava-tions have been continuing there since1965. Earthenware pieces found duringthese excavations, metal work, glass workand coins are on display at the Kars Mu-seum. Excavations started in 1965 with Pro-fessor Kemal Baltan are still ongoing.Between 1989 and 2004, Professor BeyhanKaramağaralı maintained excavations.Since 2005, work continued under the lead-ership of Professor Yaşar Çoruhlu for five

years. The Kars Museum Directorate hasalso been leading the excavations since2001.”

New AreaAlp said archaeological excavations

had been completed at the Ancient Road,Ebu Manucehr Mosque, the Seljuk Bathand Polatoğlu Church in Ani, and for thisyear’s excavations, they had determined anew area close to the Bostanlı River outsidethe city walls.

He said thousands of objects unearthedin Ani were in the museum. “During thefirst three-year excavation term, between1965 and 1967, Balkan brought more than athousand pieces. Karamağaralı brought asimilar number of objects over the 16 years.New ones were also brought to the mu-seum after 2005. Now, the museum is hometo thousands of pieces. These pieces arefrom the early Bronze Age, 5,000 years ago.The closest objects to our day dates back to1,500 years ago. They are earthenware andmetal work.”

The Russian GlendaleThe city of Sochi carries the distinction

of having the largest proportion of ethnicArmenian population in Russia. Official es-timates put the Armenian population ofSochi at between 50 and 70,000 out of thecity's total population of 368,000.

By contrast, according to the 2010 U.S.census, Glendale's Armenian populationnumbers over 65,000 or more than one-third of the total population of under200,000.

Sochi is of course much closer to Yere-van, just an hour and fiften-minute flight.

Like Glendale, Sochi is a relatively newcity. A military fort was established in the1830s and a resort began in 1900s. First Ar-menians began to settle in what soon be-came Sochi in the 1860s, they were mostlyHamshen Armenian refugees from Turkey.More arrived in the consequence of theGenocide and continued to arrive through-out the Soviet and post-Soviet periods.
