WE ARE A MULTIDISCIPLINARY FIRM.

INTERIOR DESIGN

We believe interior design should reflect each client’s culture and communicate their values while meeting both their functional and aesthetic goals. Our projects range from company headquarters to international hotels to interiors for public institutions. Working in conjunction with MGA&D’s product designers, our interior designers often custom-design furniture and artwork that complement the character of the firm’s architecture and interiors.

ARCHITECTURE

We believe that architecture is inextricably tied to use, place, client aspirations and cultural traditions. We also believe that the greatest buildings are those that cannot be imagined anywhere else in the world. Thus, it is our mission to provide clients around the globe with highly functional, intuitive design solutions that are sensitive to an ever changing built environment in both scale and context. We bring design excellence to all building types.

PLANNING

We see planning as a vital part of the built landscape, a process that begins with the development of a hierarchical organization of spatial relationships between buildings and the surrounding built or natural context. Our master plans impart a distinct sense of community and place, while establishing a framework for current and future decisions. Throughout the world, we have created award-winning designs that are functional, efficient, site specific and sustainable.

WASHINGTON MONUMENT RESTORATION SCAFFOLDWASHINGTON, D.C.

When the Washington Monument needed major restoration work to combat years of weathering and aging, Graves was selected by a public-private partnership to design the scaffolding that surrounded the Monument for three years as well as the interiors of the observation and interpretive areas. The scaffolding followed the profile of the monument and was embellished with a blue semi-transparent architectural mesh fabric attached in a running bond masonry pattern that reflected the Monument’s stone mortar joints at a larger scale. At night, the scaffolding was lit by hundreds of lights incorporated into the design.

The project captured the public imagination and was so popular that other cities sought to have similar monuments. With a backdrop of colorful fireworks, the monument was also a highlight of the millennial celebration of 2000.

The headquarters of the World Bank Group’s International Finance Corporation is located on a triangular site on Pennsylvania Avenue at Washington Circle. The 1.1 million SF headquarters building was designed to meet two potentially conflicting goals: ensuring the security of employees and providing a sense of transparency. Located in the heart of Washington, DC, the exterior design responds to its contextual surroundings. In addition to offices, the program includes a conference and training center, multi-purpose auditorium, library, cafeteria and dining rooms, among other common facilities.

The DOT headquarters, the first executive cabinet-level office building constructed following 9/11, consolidated 5,500 employees in one location. Utilizing a design-build and leaseback financing arrangement, the architecture commission was based on GSA design excellence criteria. Spanning 2 city blocks, the design for 2- million SF complex creates two separate buildings that complement each other with respect to their size, shape and architectural character.

Floor plans and fenestration were designed to ensure that all employees had access to natural light. Soaring atriums, topped by glass skylights, bring natural light to more users of the large buildings.

U.S. EMBASSY COMPOUNDSEOUL, KOREA

The U.S. Embassy in Seoul consists of a new Chancery Office Building, Staff Housing and Support Facilities within a walled compound. The 402,255 SF (37,419-meter) project commenced with a master plan to establish a planning approach that would locate the several buildings on the site within stringent zoning parameters and site constraints. The entire site inside the walls of the compound is developed as a series of landscaped gardens. A large lawn provides common open space to resident families. Other more intimate picturesque spaces are reminiscent of traditional Korean gardens, acknowledging the local reverence for natural landscape. The location and massing of the buildings were determined by the topography of the site, traffic patterns, setbacks required for security and mandated viewsheds from two adjacent historic and cultural properties, the Russian Legation Tower and Duksoo Palace.

UNITED STATES COURTHOUSENASHVILLE, TN

The 392,982 SF U.S. Courthouse in Nashville, Tennessee, a GSA Design Excellence project, contains 11 courtrooms, including one District ceremonial courtroom, six District courtrooms, and four magistrate courtrooms, as well as offices for the U.S. Attorney, U.S. Marshals, U.S. Probation, U.S. Pretrial Service, and the GSA, a Circuit Satellite Library, and parking for 56 staff members.

| GOVERNMENT EXPERIENCE42

BILLINGS U.S. COURTHOUSEBILLINGS, MT

MGA&D provided preliminary designs for a $60 million, 146,700- SF federal courthouse to be built in downtown Billings, Montana, which will serve in housing the U.S. District Court, the U.S. Marshals Service and the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The building was designed as a landmark building that allows for the support of the long-term goals for downtown Billings while facilitating increased workforce collaboration among federal offices through the consolidation of office space. The GSA building was designed to work toward a new energy economy by investing in new, more energy-efficient public buildings.

GT ‘MICKEY’ LELAND FEDERAL BUILDINGHOUSTON, TX

The GT “Mickey” Leland Federal Building in Houston is an existing 22-story tower built in the 1970s as a commercial office building, which the federal government intends to renovate and upgrade using a design-build project delivery method. The government’s General Services Administration (GSA) had prepared bridging documents for the replacement of the building facades, which would occur while the building is occupied, and for renovations to the entrance, lobby and common spaces surrounding the building core. In submitting a bid, the contractor had the option of providing an alternate design that would meet the requirements of the GSA’s Design Excellence Program. MGA&D designed a scheme that creates a more secure, efficient and productive workplace for federal employees, uses sustainable design principles and maintains the cost, schedule and construction methods already developed.
