MICHAEL GRAVES ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

WE BELIEVE HUMANISM IS THE SOUL OF DESIGN AND

ENABLES TRANSFORMATIVE RESULTS. WE VIEW EACH DESIGN

OPPORTUNITY AS AN UNFOLDING STORY – AND THE PERSON

OCCUPYING THE SPACE OR USING A PRODUCT – AS THE

CENTRAL CHARACTER. BY FOCUSING ON THE INDIVIDUAL, WE

HUMANIZE DESIGN. AS A RESULT, PEOPLE EXPERIENCE OUR

WORK SPATIALLY, VISUALLY AND EMOTIONALLY.

WE ARE A MULTIDISCIPLINARY FIRM.

INTERIOR DESIGN

We believe interior design should reflect each client’s culture and communicate their values while meeting both their functional and aesthetic goals. Our projects range from company headquarters to international hotels to interiors for public institutions. Working in conjunction with MGA&D’s product designers, our interior designers often custom-design furniture and artwork that complement the character of the firm’s architecture and interiors.

ARCHITECTURE

We believe that architecture is inextricably tied to use, place, client aspirations and cultural traditions. We also believe that the greatest buildings are those that cannot be imagined anywhere else in the world. Thus, it is our mission to provide clients around the globe with highly functional, intuitive design solutions that are sensitive to an ever changing built environment in both scale and context. We bring design excellence to all building types.

PLANNING

We see planning as a vital part of the built landscape, a process that begins with the development of a hierarchical organization of spatial relationships between buildings and the surrounding built or natural context. Our master plans impart a distinct sense of community and place, while establishing a framework for current and future decisions. Throughout the world, we have created award-winning designs that are functional, efficient, site specific and sustainable.

JEAN-GEORGES SHANGHAISHANGHAI, CHINA

The Shanghai restaurant of

internationally renowned chef

Jean-Georges Vongerichten

occupies the entire fourth floor of

the renovated landmark Beaux-

Arts building known as Three

on the Bund. The full-service

restaurant serves lunch and dinner,

room, 50 in the lounge, and 20

are provided, including a table in

a private “wine cellar” and a bar

ambiance was intended to recall

the famous Jazz Age of Shanghai’s

colors, sumptuous materials and

comfortable seating. The entrance

lobby features a grid of marble

and copper leaf. The dining areas

continue the use of copper leaf

and marble and combine them

with walnut veneers and mirrors.

HOTEL MICHAEL

Page 28: MGA&D Food and Beverage Experience Book

PALIO RESTAURANTSENTOSA, SINGAPORE

Michael Graves has had a long

fascination with Italy, going back

to his student days when he

spent two years at the American

Academy in Rome. He has

returned to Italy many times since

and was therefore very happy

to design the Italian restaurant

at Hotel Michael. The restaurant

takes its name from the Palio,

a famed horse race held twice

each summer in Siena, Italy.

The 17 sectors of the city, each

represented by its own banner,

race against each other in a festive

spectacle. The inspiration for

the décor of the Palio restaurant

at Hotel Michael comes from

those distinctive and colorful

banners as well as the celebratory

atmosphere that they evoke.

HOTEL BARSENTOSA, SINGAPORE

A tribute to one of America’s

greatest contemporary architects

Michael Graves, Hotel Michael is

a luxurious treat for art lovers.

The art gallery-like atmosphere

in every maple-accented room is

complemented with mural-adorned

walls and artistic furnishings

and accessories that exude the

designer’s signature elegance.

Even the bathrooms are works of

art, with flower-motif mosaics on

the walls and the unusual blue

mosaic-tiled circular shower.

High up in the rooftop vaults of

Hotel Michael, the hip nightclub

called the Sky Bar is a dramatic

space where architecture meets

the sky. Hundreds of light fixtures

play off the blue upper reaches of

the room and create the impression

of a starry night. The furnishings

include a collection of 20th century

modern classics, showcasing the

high design theme of the hotel

and the special experience of this

particular venue.

FESTIVE HOTEL

Page 40: MGA&D Food and Beverage Experience Book

FIESTASENTOSA, SINGAPORE

The Brazilian Restaurant is

a culmination of the festive

atmosphere of the hotel lobby,

capturing the fiery and animated

characteristics of Carnival and

churrascaria. Youthful, lively

and rich with color, the dining

room, which services 146 seats

for breakfast and 158 for dining,

features two multi-colored

sculptural columns that extend

and undulate over the dining

tables. Simple glass fixtures glow

above, bringing the ceiling alive.

The dining experience extends to

outdoor dining tables and lounge,

where festivities continue with a

view to the pool. The outdoor area

contains 86 terrace dining seats

and 26 lounge seats.

HOTARUSENTOSA, SINGAPORE

The entrance to the Japanese

restaurant Hotaru, located off the

main activities of the casino level,

is a portal of fireflies calmly

flashing their bright lights

(“Hotaru” means “firefly” in

Japanese). The main restaurant

space features a performance of

chefs at Sushi and Robatayaki

Bars, with guests seated below

billowing planes of light. With an

understated elegance associated

with Japanese design, the surfaces

are simple juxtapositions of

contrasting materials such as

rough granite and polished maple.

Tucked away at the edge of

the restaurant is a private

entrance for VIP guests, as well

as private tatami rooms. Hotaru

accommodates 139 seats in the

main dining room, including the

Sushi and Robatayaki Bars and

18 in private dining rooms.

CROCKFORDS GRILLSENTOSA, SINGAPORE

Both MGA&D and its associated

architect DP Architects designed

food and beverage outlets in

the casino as well as in other

locations in the resort, each of

which has a distinctive character

and decor. Among those designed

by MGA&D is the Casino Royale

Bar, a stunning high-energy zone

with a performance stage and a

series of glass starburst sculptures,

which terminates the axis of the

main gaming hall. From the bar,

one can look up into the second

level Crockfords Grill and Wine Bar

with its sculptural ceiling feature

designed by Dale Chihuly.

ASIAN RESTAURANTCAIRO, EGYPT

Asian Restaurant

The Main Dining Room is intimate

and dimly lit. Smoothed natural

edge walnut tables, modern

Asian style chairs and textured

upholsteries sit atop a simple black

slate floor. An illuminated, mystical

sculpture is suspended from the

ceiling, dripping with beads of

glass and metal, reflecting itself in

a pool of water below. Monumental

Chinoiserie cabinets fill one side of

the room, displaying rustic vessels

and ceramics. Crimson brushed

lacquer, aged patina, embossed

leather panels and rough stone

cover the surfaces throughout.

Mysterious sources of light peek

around corners and from within

coves, seemingly carved into the

material’s edge.

CHARLIE TROTTER

Page 62: MGA&D Food and Beverage Experience Book

SEAFOOD RESTAURANTNEW YORK, NY

MGA&D designed a signature

seafood restaurant for the

legendary Chef Charlie Trotter.

The design incorporates abstract

senses of old ships, ocean currents

and rippling seaplants. Trotter has

commented that in looking for

a design partner for this unique

project it was very important for

him to get outside of the realm of

“Restaurant Designer Row.” His

idea was to “think outside the box”

and to find a visionary, a designer

of high standards who could take

his ideas and breathe life into

them. Widely recognized for his

culinary genius with seafood,

the design was developed as a

partnership between Trotter and

MGA&D to develop three very

distinct “zones” for his restaurant:

the main dining room, a drinking

bar/lounge, and a unique “raw

seafood” bar. Private dining

facilities will be available as well.
