Let's do some counting...How many squares are there?

But, what if there is only part of a square? How do we count it?

We will use FRACTIONS.

Fractions are for counting PART of something.

Let’s break the square into parts.

There are 4 equal parts in a complete square.

How many parts can you see?

There is 1 equal part.

Here is how we write it.

We can write ¼, which means

1 equal parts out of 4 parts.

Here's how we write it:

¼We read this like "one fourth."
