Robin A. Everly:: Smithsonian Institution Libraries :: International Botanical Congress :: 25 July 2011

The Beginning

2010 – Signed agreement between Smithsonian Institution Libraries (SIL) and International Association for Plant Taxonomy (IAPT) for permission to digitize and make TL-2 searchable through a web based interface.

Funding to scan and rekey TL-2 text from the Smithsonian’s Atherton Seidell Endowment.

Idea originated from botanical librarians involved in the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) project.

Scope of Work

Approximately 11,500 scanned pages

Average of 3,300 characters per page

Approximately 44,000 author entries

Image files approx. 9 GB in size

Scanned print volumes performed by the Internet Archive.

100% quality control review of scanned pages by SIL staff.

IAPT staff provided machine-readable versions of more recent volumes.

TL-2 will be re-keyed to 99.97% accuracy.

Data will be converted to XML files.
