BRAND YOU

In business, people talk about branding; that is defining and articulating what it is about a business that is unique and sets it apart from the crowd.  There are certain images and feeling associated with the Nike, Pepsi, or IBM brands.

Just thinking about their names can bring up images of their advertisements, and most of us can immediately recall their slogans.  This is branding.

These companies have made an indelible mark on your consciousness with the images that they want you to have about their business.

It is just as likely that some brand names will bring up a negative perception based on bad experiences you’ve had with their products and services.

But, whether the association is negative or positive, the brand that it leaves on your mind is difficult to remove.

In order to provide truly extraordinary care to your patients, and to be able to get the best jobs that lead to the most satisfaction, you need to develop a positive brand for yourself.

Everyday and in very encounter you have, you are presenting your brand.  Is it positive or negative?

If you’ve had a negative experience with a brand, it is not very likely that you will deal with them again.  A store in my neighborhood is part of a national chain that has lots of fancy advertisements that make it look very attractive.

I went there recently and was very disappointed.  There were only about 10 customers in the whole store but only one salesperson to help them.

There was, however, one employee on the phone, and one standing at the cash register reading a magazine.

When I asked for help the cashier paged the one person who was already too busy to help me.  I waited for about 30 minutes and then walked out without spending a dime.

That same day, I went to another store where the salesperson approached me right away and stuck with me for about 30 minutes answering my questions and getting me what I needed.

The point?  Store one has lost my business (probably forever) and store two has won it.

I have a negative brand image of store one, regardless of how much beautiful advertising they do in the future

Branding is strong,

branding is emotional,

and branding persists.

What kind of branding are you doing at work?  Are you a team player?

Do you actively seek to learn new things so that you can become better?

If not, then think about the branding you are doing with your boss and your peers.

What is the central message that you want your work to be about?  Define it, write it down, and then live it.

I worked with someone who was very good at communication skills.  When other people would refer to her they would say “she is so good with the families.”  That was her brand!  What do people say about you?

Your brand is your unique position in the world of health care.  Developing your brand will help you remain focused on what is most important to you at work
