When you think about what makes a vacation unforgettable, three things come to mind: Great weather, memorable experiences and a destination that has everything you and your family hope to enjoy. We may not be able to control the weather, but we can make sure your stay in Green Lake Country is blessed with all the opportunities to create wonderful memories.
We are the Green Lake Country Visitors Bureau, a non-profit organization, representing the cities of Berlin, Green Lake, Markesan, Princeton and Ripon. We publish this guide with a simple mission in mind: to provide information that is necessary and valuable to visitors and guests of the Green Lake Country area.
In the following pages you’ll find information on lodging, recreation, shopping, dining, specialty services and activities for the little ones in the family. Our five communities come together as a whole to provide you with the best variety of experiences. Whether you like to relax by the lake, in a spa, on the golf course or down the river in a kayak, you will find your place in Green Lake Country. If biking, fishing, hiking, or skiing give you an adrenaline rush, our abundance of recreational activities
(especially the silent sports) will thrill you. If you’re moved by the arts, history, antique shopping or green conservancy efforts, then a visit to our cities is a must.
We have menus to please every palate, from fine dining to the comfort food of our family restaurants, pizza places and pubs. Not to miss are our many cozy coffee shops and ice cream parlors which also offer unique gifts inside. Music festivals and performances throughout the year will ensure you’re constantly entertained. Whether you’re day-tripping, vacationing, visiting us with a tour, or, best yet, you’ve decided to come and join our community as a resident, there is something for everyone in Green Lake Country.
On behalf of the cities and residents of Berlin, Green Lake, Markesan, Princeton and Ripon,

G r E E N L a K Ethe good life
K nown as the oldest resort west of Niagara Falls, Green Lake is a picturesque com-munity nestled on the shores of Wisconsin’s
deepest natural inland lake, boasting 27.5 miles of shoreline. This quiet place to unwind is only 180 miles north of Chicago and 90 minutes from Green Bay, Madison and Milwaukee, and offers spectacular scenery and on-the-water recreation in all seasons.
You’ll find plenty to see and do, from water-, jet- and cross-country skiing, to golfing Lawsonia Golf Course, voted “Wisconsin Golf Course of the Year
2008” and Tuscumbia Country Club, Wisconsin’s oldest golf course. Charter a fishing trip on Big Green Lake or wait for a snowfall to join the ice shanty villagers on the “hard water”. The Green Lake Conference Center offers breathtaking views of the lake and fall colors from Judson Tower, as does Majestic Balloons, a hot-air balloon ride not to be missed. Or enjoy the natural scenery and varied terrain from one of many bike trails, then freshen up and partake of fresh local food served up at one of Bon appetit magazine’s “Best restaurants in america” or an equally appetizing Friday Fish Fry.
Green Lake will keep you busy with events and fes-tivals such as the Concerts in the Park all summer, the Green Lake County Fair, Fine arts show and Battle of the Bands in august, the Wisconsin state Chili Cook-off and Golden days harvest Festival in september, and musical and cultural events at the historic Thrasher Opera house all year long. Be sure to check the calendar of events for all of the details.

S ince 1858, the town of Markesan, has boasted an impressive history, including claims to having been the third richest city in the nation.
The Grand river winds through town, dressing up the city with nature and wildlife. Take a leisurely walk through downtown city streets and discover our wonderfully nostalgic Victorian homes as well as our unique stores. a short drive will lead to an indulgent and memorable tea party experience at the Victorian Tea house. Venture to the countryside to find horse-drawn buggies and distinct craftsmanship, prepared by the large amish population of the area. Explore their unique lifestyle by visiting old-fashioned stores filled with hand made goods.
An active approach to experiencing Markesan might involve fishing in Little Green Lake or Lake Puckaway for walleye, bass, perch, bluegill or muskie. hunters and snowmobilers will find plentiful game and excel-lent trails. Come for the day and attend one of many family-oriented events, such as a fire department breakfast or brat fry, the antique Car and Vintage snowmobile show, June dairy days, heritage days at the Grand river Valley Museum or the Christmas homespun holidays Celebration.
Markesan is where you come to slow down and enjoy life.

T he friendly city of ripon is an active community set among historic buildings and well- preserved architecture from the late 19th century. City streets are dotted with eye-catching Victorian houses known as Painted Ladies. The bustling historic
downtown features a variety of businesses in buildings whose architecture dates back to the 1860s. Take the walking tour of our city center to fully enjoy our beautiful architectural history.
Throughout the year, locals and visitors come to ripon to take part in a myriad of eclectic events. The Friday Night Concert series at the Village Green is a summertime favorite. Cookie daze, the first saturday in august, is a wonderful family festival featuring crafts, games, kid-made rockets and, of course, cookies! during septemberfest we celebrate the beauty of our fall season with live music, the Watson street car and motorcycle show, a charity sponsored dog walk, local food vendors, and other fun-filled activities for the whole family to enjoy (don’t miss the fantastic Beechwood Farm corn maze in northern ripon with hidden trails on 15 acres of corn!). The beloved dickens of a Christmas weekend kicks off the holidays on the first weekend in december. start Friday evening off with the warmth of hot cider or hot chocolate, caroling, horse-drawn carriage rides, and snack on roasted chestnuts while viewing living scenes in our downtown storefront windows known as Living Windows (Friday night). saturday features Breakfast with santa for the kids, Christmas shopping throughout our unique stores, an annual Quilt show, Enchanted Forest, and a holiday Tour of homes showcasing some of the distinct properties in our area.
While visiting ripon, make sure you explore our parks and trails (for walking, running, bik-ing or cross country skiing), Larson’s Famous Clydesdales, where tours and shows high-light this large and powerful horse breed; and of course, stop in at rippin’ Good Cookies, to sample some of their tasty selections at their outlet store. Visitors may also want to catch a movie at the historic Campus Cinema (tickets always $5), the first of many Marcus Cinemas founded by Ben Marcus in 1935. ripon’s Vines and rushes Winery is a must-stop for wine enthusiasts and those interested in Wisconsin’s agri-tourism.
ripon holds a special place in our nation’s history: The Little White schoolhouse, built in 1853, is the birthplace of the republican Party, and a National historic Landmark. The Little
White schoolhouse is open for visitors to admire antique artifacts, learn more about ripon, and understand what school life was like for children in the 1850s.
ripon College, a nationally recognized private liberal arts and sciences school, founded in 1851, is a 250 acre campus that flows into the community with buildings dating back to the 19th century. The college provides cultural and sporting events open for everyone to enjoy.
Come. Find out why ripon is the ideal place to live, work, play, and prosper.

BIrdWaTChINGin Green Lake Country
G reen Lake Country is blessed by its wealth of habitats for birds and wildlife, and many locations have trails and are open to public
access. Depending on the time of year, some places will vary considerably in what birdlife might be present, while other sites might provide great opportunities to find birds during any season. The best time of year for birdwatching is spring and summer – especially April through July – when individu-als are engaged in territorial displays or breeding activities.
Starting relatively close to the lake, there are a number of Green Lake Conservancy sites that provide a good birdwatching experience. One of the best is Sunnyside Conservancy, which is located along Silver Creek Inlet, and contains several lagoons surrounded by two miles of trails. Other conservancy hiking areas include Hammer’s Trail and Winnebago Trail, both of which are located within the Green Lake Conference Center and overlook the lake. Norwegian Bay Conservancy has a long boardwalk that extends through a marsh to the shore of Norwegian Bay. More information about these and other conservancy sites can be found at the website: greenlakeconservancy.org
Just a little further from the lake are two very large state-owned properties that can provide wonderful birding op-portunities. The White River Wildlife Area (located just north of Princeton and west of Berlin), and the Grand River Wildlife Area (just west of Kingston). Another option is the Snake Creek Wetlands Trail, which follows an abandoned railroad right-of-way between Swamp Road and St. Marie Road. The Mascoutin Valley State Trail is also a walk not to be missed. All of these sites are marked on the maps.

O ur clean and modern parks, in each of our communities, are wonderful outdoor spaces to play and enjoy the sun. The libraries go above
and beyond with rich educational events for kids of all ages. In addition, the Aquatic center in Berlin offers the much needed water fun during the hot summer months, or for the more adventurous, take a dip in our pristine
lakes and rivers. There are swimming and sailing lessons, and the opportunity to enjoy ice cream on the new wharf or at our many ice cream parlors throughout the cities. Our Boys and Girls Club of the Tri-County Area invites all children to participate in their wonderful programs throughout the year, which not only offer fun memories, but the opportunity to learn something new every day.
